In honor of our Centennial Celebration, several Western New York landmarks were lit up in blue and orange on September 24, 2019.

From sharing your time, talent and treasure, to supporting causes that are most meaningful to you, while inspiring your neighbors to do the same, the ripples of doing good flow through our region no matter what we are facing together. Helping you make the most of your generosity is what the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo is all about. Since 1919, we have worked alongside our clients to create transformative change in Western New York. Today, 100 years later, we are proud to feature 100 stories of individuals, families, organizations, community partners and collaborative initiatives that are a snapshot of your collective generosity and the positive change that we are igniting together. The stories in this book are 100 of the many reasons we are here, growing stronger than ever, so that we can continue to do good in Western New York for the next century and beyond. We are sincerely grateful to all of you for your continued partnership as we focus forward. Adelante.

A century of giving. At the heart of its work, the Community Foundation is committed to helping individuals, families and organizations make their charitable goals a reality. Because every client is different, no two paths to reach one’s charitable goals are the same. For 100 years, the Community Foundation has proudly taken a personalized approach to helping each client create a legacy that truly represents their unique wishes. These first stories showcase a variety of ways we work with clients.

E DWA R D H . LE TC HWO RTH The Letchworth name is certainly a familiar one in Western New York. Edward H. Letchworth was instrumental in establishing the Buffalo Foundation, now known as the Community Foundation. In 1919, he was asked by his client, George F. Rand, Sr., to learn about the concept of community foundations and bring the idea to Buffalo. Edward, a Harvard-educated attorney who worked with Phillips Lytle, shared his legal talent with the Community Foundation from its inception in 1919 until 1958. He drafted its Declaration of Trust, serving as Secretary, member of the Governing Committee, Chairman and finally, Honorary Chairman. His dedication to the public good included his work in making Kleinhans Music Hall a reality through the Community Foundation on behalf of Edward and Mary Seaton Kleinhans. Recognizing that Western New York’s needs would change over time, Edward established the Edward H. Letchworth Bequest at the Community Foundation, a changing needs fund that continues to do good in Western New York today, more than 60 years after his passing.

DA RWI N D. M AR TI N H O U S E Creating endowments at the Community Foundation is a way to preserve the past and secure the future for nonprofit organizations. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Darwin Martin House was built in the early 1900s. It was a grand masterpiece, but one that fell into disrepair with the passing of time and the lack of funds to maintain it. In 1992, a massive renovation project began to restore it to its former glory, and the final component – the landscaping – was completed in 2019. To ensure that history will not repeat itself, the Martin House Restoration Corporation established an endowment fund at the Community Foundation that will create a constant and perpetual stream of funding to support this historic landmark. Years from now, visitors can continue to experience first-hand the local work of a legendary architect.

D R . DA N I S G E H L Dr. Danis Gehl grew up the oldest of six children in the civil rights era. She remembers her parents working hard and stressing the importance of education. Following in their footsteps, Dr. Gehl has worked tirelessly in adult education, housing and neighborhood development throughout her storied career, and turned to the Community Foundation when it was time to plan her charitable legacy. She established the Rosa L. and LaMarr Norman, Sr. Education Fund, named after her parents, and takes comfort in knowing that the endowed fund will continue to support the causes that were important to her parents – and which remain important to her – today, tomorrow and forever.

A century of giving. S Y LVIA ROS E N “I went to Ohio State during the Depression, when the fees were $100 a year,” recalled Sylvia Rosen, who grew up in Columbus, Ohio. “In order to pay that, I had several jobs.” Sylvia was born in 1919, the same year that the Community Foundation was established. Although the country was experiencing a severe economic downturn throughout her youth, Sylvia remembers the charitable ways of her parents. “We didn’t have much in those days, but it was important to my parents to give back and to give big,” she said.

“Giving back gives me a purpose.”

The daughter and granddaughter of artists, Sylvia followed in her family’s footsteps, discovering her passion for ceramics, but soon realized that finding a place that recognized crafts as an art form was a challenge. “I wanted to find a way for craft media artists to show their work,” she explained. After moving to Buffalo, Sylvia and her husband, Nathan, started an endowment to create a juried biennial craft art exhibition, the first of which took place in 1988 at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center and continues to this day.

When she was in her late 90s, Sylvia learned about the Community Foundation from her professional advisor, and discovered how she could support the programs and causes that are important to her. Sylvia established the Sylvia L. Rosen Philanthropic Fund which, among other things, focuses on supporting the local arts community. This partnership allows Sylvia to focus on giving, while the Community Foundation handles all of the grant administration. Every year, grants in Sylvia’s name are made to the organizations that are important to her. “Giving back gives me a purpose,” said Sylvia. “It would be boring if you did not have something that made you want to get up in the morning.” 6

From the courtroom to the office, the Minority Bar Foundation, Inc. aims to promote equality and excellence in the field of law. To plan for the future, it partnered with the Community Foundation to establish an endowed fund. Now it will ensure a stable source of funding to carry out its mission of advancing the benefits of diversity in the legal profession.

FA R R I N GTO N FA M I LY Ruth, June and Worth Farrington were the children of F. Birney Farrington, the founder of Xcelite, a well-known local company that started out as a small metalworking shop in Orchard Park and expanded into the electronics repair industry. Ruth was known for her love of libraries, June for her love of nature and Worth, his love for and pride in serving in the U.S. Navy. The siblings generously shared their good fortune with the community during and after their lifetimes. Upon their deaths — Ruth’s in 1987, June’s in 2008 and Worth’s in 2014 — they each created an endowment fund to support the changing needs of Western New York forever. While their gifts spanned thirty years, they created a permanent legacy that will positively impact the community in which they lived and loved, and will always carry on their family name.

Generosity for generations. Individuals, couples and families come to the Community Foundation for many reasons. Some wish to pass along their legacy of giving to future generations. Some look to make the most of their generosity today while carrying on the names and good works of loved ones. And still others are looking for a way to teach the next generation about philanthropy and keep their family connected. Here are a few stories of couples and families the Community Foundation works with to help them give back in their own meaningful way.

“Do you feel that what you do has meaning?” That is a question Priya Pinto recalls her late husband, Michael, asking her one morning, and something she thinks about often. Priya was born in China, and spent the formative years of her childhood in India. As a young woman, she met Michael, who came from a middle class family, but had been given the opportunity to advance his education to become a CPA. They married and started a family. Soon after, Michael headed to the United States to enroll in the Wharton School of Business. With their two children, Alok and Ruchika, in tow, Priya followed a year later, and upon Michael’s graduation, they moved to Western New York when Michael was offered a position with M&T Bank and Priya started her career in human services. “When we came to the United States, we had nothing, but somebody gave us a chance,” said Priya. Because of this, as the couple advanced their careers in their respective fields, they felt a strong desire to give back. After researching ways to make the most of their charitable dollars, Michael and Priya worked through their attorney and financial advisor to establish the Pinto Foundation Fund in 2003 at the Community Foundation to support education.

“My parents taught me that if you have the means, you should be pushing yourself to give back,” said Alok, who volunteered throughout his time in college, law school and the Peace Corps.“The Community Foundation offers you a broad perspective and then lets you drill down on what you want to focus on, and our family’s giving goals have widened since my father’s death.” The Pintos feel that partnering with the Community Foundation has given them a deeper connection to Western New York, as well as the opportunity to support other regions as they look ahead.

“My parents taught me that if you have the means, you should be pushing yourself to give back.” “We are able to give in the way that is most meaningful to us. To be able to do that with confidence in the management and trust in the expertise that is provided by the Community Foundation – I would not have it any other way,” said Priya.

When Michael passed away in 2014, Priya, Alok and Ruchika took a more active role in determining grants from the fund.

Generosity for generations. T H E K H AN FA M I LY The Khan family believes you are never too young to learn about giving back. After establishing the MaRK Foundation at the Community Foundation to support organizations that are important to them during their lifetimes, Medhi and Rima Khan decided it was time to get their young children involved. A family meeting at the Community Foundation helped educate the second generation advisors about why charitable giving is important so that when it comes time for them to plan their own giving, they will be well-informed on how to pay it forward.

J OYC E A N D ST UA R T A N G E R T Local businessman Stuart Angert and his wife, Joyce, have made philanthropy a hallmark of their life’s work. When establishing the Joyce and Stuart Angert Fund, the couple wanted an organization that would drive significant impact, and allow them to support a myriad of organizations within Western New York and beyond.

VO GT FA M I LY For the Vogt siblings, one memory that drives their family’s legacy of giving is that of their grandmother, Mary Regina Koessler, at her typewriter, diligently making note of all the donations she would make to those in need. In 1989, the family created the Vogt Family Foundation, which was established with a portion of the proceeds from the sale of their family business, Greater Buffalo Press. To ensure that their family’s legacy of giving continues to be passed on to future generations, the Vogt siblings decided to transfer their foundation to the Community Foundation to provide the extra support needed as their family expands and spreads out all over the country. Now Vogt family members from across the nation come together twice a year to make grant decisions and support Western New York and other communities that are important to them.

E LIZ A B E TH A N D J O H N H U LLE Y Elizabeth (Bette) and John Hulley have generously supported our community for years, including through John’s work as a master craftsman on restoration projects like the Darwin D. Martin House. When it came time to plan their legacy, they selected the Community Foundation. Bette, a certified financial planner, has referred several long-standing clients to the Community Foundation and knew it was the right partner to ensure that the community they cared for during their lives would be supported in their names forever.

Helping organizations focus on the future. The Community Foundation manages endowments for many organizations, each with its own unique mission and vision for the future. These organizations benefit from the Community Foundation’s investment strategy, which provides maximum diversification and top investment performance. By investing with the Community Foundation, organizations can count on a sustainable source of income and be assured that they retain autonomy and flexibility, including the ability to honor their donors’ intent. 12

NATIVITY MIGUEL MIDDLE SCHOOL OF BUFFALO A handful of sharply dressed seventh grade boys shuffle into a bright classroom at NativityMiguel Middle School of Buffalo. Each one politely greets School President, Nancy Langer, and Board of Trustees President, JoAnne Hudecki, before taking their seats and engaging in a lighthearted conversation about the school’s basketball team. It is clear that these students are excited to be part of the NativityMiguel experience, a national school model designed to reach out to educationally underserved students, partner with parents, and provide a safe and nurturing learning environment. The school, made up of the boys’ St. Augustine campus and the girls’ St. Monica campus, evolved from Catholic Central into a NativityMiguel school to better serve the children in the surrounding neighborhoods, providing extended school days that mirror a typical work day, as well as a longer school year that encompasses much of the summer. As its leaders embarked on its first strategic plan under the NativityMiguel model six years ago, being able to continue to best meet the needs of its fifth through eighth graders, setting them up for success beyond their middle school years, was the top priority. Already familiar with the Community Foundation as a grantmaker and community leader, the school decided to establish a fund to create a stable and sustainable source of funding. A year after it was established, the school received a generous gift from a priest who named the school in his Will. “The fund has had a huge impact on our ability to make changes in the school, and we would not be able to do that if we had to focus so carefully on the day-to-day administration and investment of the fund,” Nancy noted.

Both Nancy and JoAnne agree that they chose the right partner. “The Community Foundation is very transparent in terms of their robust investment strategy,” said Nancy. “We have a lot of trust and confidence in the investment committee and the seriousness with which they take their role. They feel a real obligation toward the work and impact that is being done as a result of the investment.” Through its fund, NativityMiguel Middle School of Buffalo is now able to plan for the future knowing it will have a perpetual source of funding, and ultimately help its students succeed well past the last school bell.

By working with private, public and charter high schools to help underrepresented youth take advantage of a first-rate college preparatory education since 1989, the organization established an endowment at the Community Foundation to ensure a perpetual stream of funding. Now it can secure a future of serving hundreds of students and alumni each year.

BO N ITA AN D H E N RY D U R AN D It was the 1960s and Bonita Cobb was in her middle school modern history class in Cincinnati, Ohio. She sat in front of a shy, athletic student named Henry Durand. Little did she know then that she had found her soulmate.

the Communities of Giving Legacy Initiative (CGLI). “I found it fascinating that there was an initiative like CGLI that was committed to the group that Henry and I worried about all the time,” Boni said.

The high school sweethearts were awarded scholarships to separate colleges – Boni to Kent State and Henry to Denison University, where he was one of only five black students to enter the college in 1966. Henry was a varsity team starter playing offense and defense for his four-year career and holds the distinction of being the first black captain of the otherwise all-white Denison University football team.

She joined the Community Foundation Board in 2015, and the Durands began contributing to the CGLI endowment. “It is kind of an extension and a more formal way of continuing to do the work that we always did,” explained Boni.

After college, Boni and Henry married and started a family, moving to Western New York in 1990 when Henry was offered a job at the University of Buffalo as director of its Educational Opportunity Program. Boni later secured a position as Chief of Staff to the President at Buffalo State College. Seeing the need to provide cultural support to students of color, the Durands began to help in any way they could, such as hosting Thanksgiving dinners for students that could not afford to return home for the break.

Henry passed away in 2018, but Boni knows that through the Community Foundation, the good he always did will live on forever. “People took a chance on us. People saw potential when we did not see it ourselves, and now it is our time to do that for someone else,” she said. “It is important to pay it forward.”

Celebrating a Century. A century in the making, 2019 was truly a memorable year-long celebration for the Community Foundation. From announcing the Centennial Awards, to hosting events in Florida and educational Centennial Salons, the year was full of excitement leading up to our big celebration in September.

Marking 100 years of generosity in Western New York and culminating with an inspiring event on September 24, 2019, at Kleinhans Music Hall, the Community Foundation honored 12 local change makers who exemplify what it means to ignite transformative change in Western New York. The evening brought together our clients and community partners, current and former Board members, local performers and our dedicated staff, who all share a desire to do good. As we focus on advancing our vision of a vibrant and inclusive Greater Buffalo region with opportunity for all, we are keenly aware that we do it together, with each of you, and standing on the shoulders of those who came before us. We see infinite potential for the next 100 years and beyond.

Celebrating our 12 Centennial Awards finalists at our Centennial event in September.

Holding our celebration at Kleinhans was a natural fit since the Community Foundation was instrumental in building it.

21

In 1934, Edward and Mary Seaton Kleinhans, the owners of a clothing store that bore their name, died within three months of each other. They bequeathed their estates to the Community Foundation with instructions to fulfill their dream of building a music hall for our community. The Community Foundation Board led the efforts to find a location, choose an architect, oversee the construction and secure a federal grant when it became evident that more funds were needed to carry out the couple’s wishes. Six years later, in 1940, Kleinhans Music Hall opened its doors, and the Kleinhans’ wish and legacy continue to benefit our entire community today. 19

STO C K TO N FA M I LY Richard and Ruth Stockton spent the majority of their lives in Buffalo, always appreciating its 35 challenges and treasures. In 1995, their son, Dr. Richard Stockton Jr. (Rick), established the Stockton Family Fund at the Community Foundation as a way to give back to the community the family loved. Thirteen years later, he established a second fund, the Fund for Nature, to support the environment. In 2019, after the passing of his mother, Rick decided to honor his parents’ legacy by opening the Stockton Family Changing Needs Fund at the Community Foundation. Rick believes that by directing some assets to support the changing needs in Western New York, his parents’ legacy will transform lives beyond what anyone can envision today. Bold goals. Bright future. Our generous Change Makers make it possible for the Community Foundation to facilitate long-term transformative change in Western New York. This leadership work is prioritized through a regular, strategic planning process led by the Community Foundation’s Board of Directors that includes analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, as well as resident input. As the needs of the community continue to change over time, so does the way the Community Foundation addresses those needs. The 2019 community goals were as follows*:

Increase racial and ethnic equity Greater Buffalo is on the rise and we believe all our residents should have the opportunity to take part and fulfill their highest potential.

Improve educational achievement and workforce readiness for residents living in low-income households By removing financial, academic, social and health barriers to educational attainment, we will develop the skills in our local talent pool to support long-term economic growth in the region.

Protect and restore significant environmental resources and promote equitable access With approximately 20 percent of the world’s fresh water flowing through our region, we must ensure that it is not only clean, but that all residents are able to access and enjoy our waterways.

Strengthen the region as a center for architecture, arts and culture Our region’s arts and culture sector enhances the quality of life in our community and boosts our local economy. Every dollar invested in the arts returns nearly $10 in economic impact. * When the community experienced the COVID-19 crisis in 2020, the Community Foundation moved quickly to meet the immediate needs of Western New York through the lens of these goals.

Racial Equity Need content (should have 1/27)

Advancing equity, one coalition at a time. We are at a pivotal moment in time in Western New York. Now more than ever, we must close racial equity gaps in our community to positively accelerate our economic resurgence to ensure all residents can play a part in moving us forward together.

Greater Buffalo Racial Equity Roundtable In 2015, the Community Foundation convened civic leaders to form the Greater Buffalo Racial Equity Roundtable with the goal of achieving an expanded, inclusive economy. The Roundtable is comprised of nearly 40 community leaders from public, private, nonprofit and faith institutions committed to advancing racial equity in our region, and now has more than 250 organizations engaged in the work to reach actionable – and achievable – goals detailed in a nine-point agenda. Here are a few of the 2019 highlights: BOYS & YO U N G M E N O F CO LO R Lifting up voices of boys and young men of color, as well as supporting them 37 on a path to be leaders in our The second Breaking Barriers cohort community, is the graduated in January. focus for the Boys & Young Men of Color Coalition. One of its initiatives is the Breaking Barriers Youth Leadership Council embedded within Say Yes Buffalo. With two inspiring graduation classes, the ripple effect of creating leaders and mentors in our community is audible and visible. These young men played an impactful role in the Roundtable’s racial equity storytelling work with WBFO-FM in 2019.

Harnessing the spending power of corporate powerhouses in our region to ensure businesses of color have an opportunity to earn contracts is a key focus of the Business Leaders Task Force (BLTF). Comprised of 12 major employers, the BLTF developed the Buffalo Purchasing Initiative, a 2-year pilot that involves the employers building capacity around inclusive procurement practices and increasing purchase orders with businesses owned by people of color. To date, it has exceeded its spend goal and contracted directly with 45 new businesses of color. R AC I A L H E A L I N G C I R C L E S

Creating space that encourages sharing, builds trust and fosters understanding across racial groups has been the work of the Racial Healing Circles Workgroup. In addition to planning the annual National Day of Racial Healing held each January, this group of religious leaders representing different faiths hosted nearly a dozen healing circles, while building capacity by training 17 new facilitators. R E E NTRY COALITI O N 40 The odds are against reentering citizens. Trying to put your life back on track can at times appear to be insurmountable. Now imagine leaving the Erie County Holding Center and only needing to walk around the corner to access resources to support you in reaching employment and life goals. The Roundtable’s Reentry Coalition is made up of 55 agencies working collaboratively to improve outcomes for reentering citizens. One priority was creating The Services Link Stop, a one-stop shop for reentering individuals to access programs and services from more than 20 on-site partners, expected to open in 2020. 31

Building blocks for success. Education is the leading indicator of economic health for a region, and every child, regardless of zip code, should have access to the necessary resources to learn and flourish. Starting with Buffalo’s eager-to-learn preschoolers to high school seniors and post-graduates, the Community Foundation works with its partners to discover and nurture the potential of children and youth.

The ABCs of education include ensuring that children entering kindergarten are prepared physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. The Community Foundation is a funding partner and co-convener of Liftoff, an alliance launched in 2018 which collectively engages in community and systemwide work to achieve better early childhood outcomes by integrating practice, policy, research and resources. In 2019, Liftoff conducted an assessment to understand the early childhood needs in New York’s nine western-most counties and hired its first Executive Director to implement a coordinated agenda.

In 1998, 17 nonprofit organizations, including the Community Foundation, came together with the desire to organize a more focused and strategic way to impact educational outcomes for at-risk children. Together, they created the Education Foundation for Greater Buffalo. In 2006, the Education Foundation narrowed its focus to early childhood literacy and created Read to Succeed Buffalo, which is now an independent nonprofit. The Community Foundation continues to be involved with Read to Succeed, granting out funds to support initiatives like the Community Alignment Reading Excellence Child Care and Preschool programs.

Helping students reach for the stars benefits us all. Launched in December 2011, Say Yes Buffalo is an unprecedented, collaborative effort with more than 200 partners from the public, private and nonprofit sectors committed to strengthening Western New York by investing in the education of Buffalo’s future workforce. The Community Foundation played a key 43 leadership role in brokering this initiative and today, Say Yes Buffalo provides scholarships to eligible graduates of Buffalo public and charter schools to all SUNY/CUNY schools and more than 100 private colleges and universities across the United States. Additionally, the Community Foundation has awarded grants and provided guidance to Say Yes Buffalo’s programmatic work around increasing access to mental health services for Buffalo students and creating opportunities for boys and young men of color through the work of the Greater Buffalo Racial Equity Roundtable. The Say Yes Buffalo Scholarship Endowment Fund is invested at the Community Foundation with a goal of providing long-term sustainable support for future generations of students.

Supporting the environments that nourish our kids. A healthy childhood begins at home. Many factors affect the ability of children to learn and thrive in their environment. When it comes to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to reach their potential, we need to address threats in the place that should be the safest.

G E T AH E AD O F LE AD Ayat Nieves just recorded his first original song, complete with a music video. Ayat is not an aspiring rock musician or rap artist; he’s a Buffalo property manager and landlord who is making lead poisoning prevention a priority in a creative way. Ayat is one of 40 landlords convened by the Community Foundation in a first-in-thenation human-centered design project to engage property owners in preventing lead poisoning. A recent report showed that 80 percent of childhood lead poisoning in Buffalo occurs in rental units that are owned by small-scale landlords. Contrary to popular belief, landlords in Buffalo typically are not absentee property owners or corporations aiming to turn a profit. Over 50 percent of the landlords of high-risk properties live in Buffalo, often in the same neighborhood as their rental properties. These landlords can be key partners in protecting children from lead hazards presented by chipped lead-based paint in homes built before 1978.

The Community Foundation has worked with landlords to develop an education campaign with and for them called “Get Ahead of Lead” to help landlords understand the basics of lead exposure as well as legal and regulatory obligations to maintain their property. Landlords have advised the entire process of the campaign, from choosing the logo to developing the messages. This effort launched a community engagement campaign, including the website GetAheadofLead.org, and has changed the way the city of Buffalo communicates with landlords. This is music to Ayat’s ears.

45

Another way the Community Foundation is working to make homes healthier and safer for everyone is through the Green and Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI). The GHHI approach also provides economic benefit to families in the form of cost savings, develops career pathways to higher-paying green jobs, and produces more stable neighborhoods by increasing the quality of housing stock. GHHI is a public-private partnership between federal, state and local governments along with national and local philanthropy, and convened locally by the Community Foundation. Buffalo’s GHHI aligns and coordinates funding sources and programs for weatherization, lead hazard control, asthma control, and other home health and safety interventions in low-income households. In 2019 alone, GHHI assisted 148 families in the 14208, 14211, 14212 and 14215 zip codes. 35

Freedom of expression. Recognizing that arts and culture play an important role in the vitality of Western New York, this sector results in more than $350 million in total economic impact.

M I C H I GA N ST R E E T AFR I C AN A M E R I C A N H E R ITAG E CO R R I DO R As you drive down Michigan Avenue in Buffalo, you cannot miss 46 the expansive arch that graces the entrance of the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor, which was installed in 2019. Nestled on Buffalo’s East Side and encompassing neighborhoods that include Willert Park, Cold Springs and the Fruit Belt, the area serves as a reminder of those local heroes who shaped the abolitionist and civil rights movements. Anchor properties along the corridor include The Nash House Museum, The Colored Musicians Club, Michigan Street Baptist Church and WUFO, New York State’s first and only black female-owned radio station. These iconic landmarks tell of our city’s rich African American history. In 2001, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization called the Buffalo Niagara Freedom Station Coalition was formed with a focused mission to preserve and promote the heritage of the Michigan Street Baptist Church, Buffalo’s first African American church. The Community Foundation has been a key supporter of the Coalition’s efforts, by assisting with building the Board, stabilizing the church’s structure, completing a strategic plan and funding a Historic Structure Report, as well as an oral history interviewing program, and securing grant funding for the all-volunteer based group to ensure forward momentum.

FU N D FO R TH E A RT S The Fund for the Arts was established 15 years ago by a group of funders to mitigate the impact of Erie County budget cuts. Today, its mission has evolved to meet the needs of the sector, and almost $3 million in collaborative funding has been provided to build capacity for various arts and cultural initiatives. The Community Foundation administers this funders’ cooperative of public, private, family and corporate foundations. Together, they assess the needs of our arts community, and promote collaboration to strengthen the sector as a whole.

Gail Johnstone Gail Johnstone served as President/CEO of the Community Foundation from 1997 to 2007. During Gail’s decade-long tenure, the Community Foundation expanded services to deepen our commitment to our clients and our community, and doubled its total assets. Gail led the charge on many structural improvements, including implementation of a comprehensive integrated financial and data management system, introduction of several new options for client giving, installation of a web-based, password-protected fund access link for clients and much more. Gail was also instrumental in the creation of the 21st Century Fund, a giving circle that is open to anyone who wants to give back to Western New York.

49

When it was time for Gail and her husband, Bruce, to consider their legacy, they turned to the Community Foundation for its unsurpassed knowledge of the community and top-of-class investment results. “When we decided to leave our legacy with the Community Foundation, we knew it was the right move,” Gail said. Gail continues to be one of our greatest champions and we truly appreciate all of her contributions to our first century of success.

Gail and Bruce Johnstone

William Van Schoonhoven William “Beau” Van Schoonhoven spent 17 years at the helm of the Community Foundation, giving his talent to the betterment of the quality of life in Western New York.

50

During his tenure: Community, corporate and foundation leaders came together to establish WNY Grantmakers to support and promote effective philanthropy in Western New York; and the Community Foundation established a corporate format parallel to the trust format to maximize investment opportunities for clients.

Legacy Society

73

The Community Foundation Legacy Society was created more than two decades ago to acknowledge individuals who have committed to supporting the community in the future through a planned gift. According to their specific directions, the Community Foundation will support the organizations, issues and communities these individuals care about, in their names, forever, in Western New York and beyond. Making arrangements for a charitable legacy that makes the most of your generosity is a simple process. If you are interested in supporting what is most important to you beyond your lifetime, please contact Betsy Constantine, Executive Vice President, at (716) 852-2857 ext. 217. 42

E D KO RY L Now retired, Niagara Falls native Ed Koryl spends half of the year in Florida. Every spring, however, he returns faithfully to Buffalo—and in recent years is more and more impressed with the changes that have taken place during his absence.

74

Ed’s love of Buffalo is what brought him to the Community Foundation when he was making plans for his estate. Ed is particularly passionate about supporting the cultural organizations that distinguish Buffalo as a great place to live. He’s also enthusiastic about efforts to improve education and local medical research institutions, which Ed sees as critical to a better economic future for our region. While there are many specific institutions he supports now, Ed is cognizant that after his lifetime, things will continue to change. With this in mind, Ed made the decision to designate his legacy gift to support these issue areas.

43

Where there is good will, there is a way. The Community Foundation is proud to carry on the legacies of more than 500 clients who made a decision during their lifetime to entrust us with carrying out their charitable wishes to support the causes and organizations they were passionate about forever. As you will read in the following stories, each legacy is as unique as the client’s fingerprint.

44

LI N DA K IT TI N G E R WA DSWO R TH Some clients choose to plan for the future by creating lasting legacies through the Community Foundation. In 1993, Linda Kittinger Wadsworth established The Kittinger Family Fund at the Community Foundation to honor her family’s history of giving back in our community. The fund supports nonprofit organizations and projects serving the 75 cultural, civic, educational, environmental, health, scientific and social welfare needs in our community, ensuring that the Kittinger Family’s generosity lives on forever.

TH E L M A A N D M I LFR E D B EC K A passion for their community and a love of music inspired Thelma and Milfred Beck to leave their life savings to support these causes, which were important to them, forever. The couple knew that they would have the opportunity to continue giving back to Niagara County, despite not having heirs, by designating the Niagara Area Foundation, 76 a geographic affiliate of the Community Foundation, to be the recipient of their savings. The couple knew that they could trust the Niagara Area Foundation to use the money where it was needed most, according to their wishes.

JACO B G . J OS E PH Jacob G. Joseph and his family moved to Buffalo in 1901, when he took an administrative position with the Buffalo Steel Company. Jacob and his wife, Blanche, quickly became involved in philanthropic activities in and around Buffalo. In 1911, Jacob helped found The Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies, and Blanche was an active volunteer with the women’s charity clubs at Temple Beth Zion. Due to his business acumen and philanthropic activities, Jacob was selected as one of the first trustees of the Community Foundation, serving as Board Chair from 1919 to 1931. Both Jacob and Blanche created funds at the Community Foundation that continue to support a number of their charitable 77 interests such as The Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies and children’s health. One such fund – the Jacob G. Joseph Bequest (Camp) – was a designated fund that originally supported the Jewish Fresh Air Camp in Angola. That camp became Camp Lakeland in 1947 and was relocated to Franklinville, until it permanently closed in 2008. At that time, the Community Foundation was responsible for finding another organization whose mission aligned with that of the camp to carry out the Josephs’ wishes. The Community Foundation identified the Jewish Community Center of Greater Buffalo’s summer camps as the natural successor to Camp Lakeland, and This 1930s-era photograph of the Jewish Fresh Air Camp Swimming Pool in Angola, NY, was the today, nearly 90 years after they established forerunner to Camp Lakeland that was also located initially in Angola after its name change. Our Approach to Charitable Investments

78

The Community Foundation’s Investment Committee has oversight of more than $495 million in charitable assets. Members of the Committee are specifically recruited because of their knowledge of investments. They receive advice throughout the year from our independent investment consulting firm Colonial Consulting, LLC, which specializes in advising large endowments and foundations nationwide. Together, they work to allocate the charitable assets entrusted to the Community Foundation’s care into a highly diversified mix of global equities, fixed income and alternative investment strategies. This includes 55 different investment management organizations pursuing strategies within 13 different asset classes. Within each asset class, the Community Foundation seeks to utilize world-class investment managers with the goal of outperforming appropriate target market benchmarks over long periods. The Committee remains focused on maintaining a prudent strategy, consistently executed.

Investment Performance The investments of the Community Foundation regularly outperform our benchmarks, on average adding 8.0 percent per year over the last 10 years. Investing in the Community Foundation portfolio provides stability and growth over time. This growth provides significant value to the charitable assets entrusted to the Community Foundation. Long-term returns have been well above market benchmarks, and regularly perform in the top 25 percent of endowments and foundations.* For updated information, visit cfgb.org.

How It Works This endowment was established with $2.1 million in 1978 through a legacy gift (bequest) to the Community Foundation from a parent in honor of his son who died tragically as a young man. Today, decades after both father and son have passed on, the initial gift has more than tripled to $7.5 million, all while giving $8.9 million in grants to the organizations they cared about. Their fund will continue to honor this family’s charitable giving legacy by making grants to their favorite organizations in their name, forever.

FR AN K M E S IAH

A Champion for Change. Veteran. Teacher. Police officer. Not only was Frank Mesiah all of these things, but he also worked tirelessly to advance racial equity in Western New York. For nearly 20 years, Frank served as president of the NAACP Buffalo 84 Branch, whose mission is to secure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights in order to eliminate race-based discrimination. He also served as First Vice President of the New York State Conference of NAACP Branches and as Regional Administrator in the Division of Equal Opportunity Development of the New York State Department of Labor. Even after retirement, Frank continued to conduct educational workshops on diversity, harassment prevention and affirmative action programs. Locally, Frank was known for his steadfast work to advance civil rights. A long-standing resident of the Parkside Community, Frank helped establish one of the oldest block clubs in Buffalo. To honor their father’s incredible legacy of fighting for justice, Frank’s children established the Frank Mesiah Family Legacy Fund at the Community Foundation to support the community’s changing needs. Now Frank’s legacy will serve as a catalyst for positive change in Western New York forever.

T H E J O H N R . O I S H E I FO U N DATI O N The power of collective impact is what brings the Community Foundation and The John R. Oishei Foundation together on many different initiatives that are shaping a better future for all. Whether working together to bring Say Yes to Education to Buffalo, as co-founders of the Fund for the Arts, being active participants in the Greater Buffalo Racial Equity Roundtable or helping to get the Liftoff program off of the ground, both foundations have a deep appreciation for their longstanding partnership and their track record of being better together. With the common goal of driving much-needed change to strengthen our region, The John R. Oishei Foundation also relies on the Community Foundation to execute its college scholarship program. “It is our vision that as we give these deserving students an opportunity to attend college, they will, in turn, become active community contributors,” said Blythe Merrill, Senior Vice President of Programs at The John R. Oishei Foundation. “By leveraging our shared knowledge and limited resources, we are enhancing our impact and solving problems much more so than we could do on our own.” John R. 86

The legacies of the brothers, killed 27 days apart in automobile accidents in January and February 1988, both on their way to ski competitions, are carried on through the Joe and Brett Ski Scholarship at the Community Foundation. “We decided to award a scholarship to a ski racer based not only on the racer’s skiing ability, but also on his or her character and academic performance. Someone well-rounded,” Peggy said. Each year, the scholarship helps a young athlete on the Kissing Bridge Racing Team attend a summer camp of his or her choice. Most winners have chosen to go to Mt. Hood, Oregon, where they train with Olympic athletes and enjoy outdoor adventures. 55

Begun by community activists in 2001 and transferred to Buffalo State College in 2009, this collection was originally comprised of 80 linear feet of unique historical material. Over the last decade, it has tripled in size through donations from more than 80 individuals, groups and diverse organizations. These tens of thousands of documents and items include photographs, organizational records, multimedia materials, pamphlets, posters, news clippings, radio shows, awards, signs, banners, plaques and published materials. In 2016, the Madeline Davis LGBT Archives Endowment Fund at the Community Foundation was established to support the Archive and the continued preservation of LGBTQ+ and gender activism 87 materials. Donors to the fund have provided invaluable support that allows for outreach, collection development and student teaching. As a designated endowment fund, each year, the Archives receive Madeline Davis consistent funding to maintain and grow this exceptional, ever-growing and permanently housed collection – with the goal to provide avenues for outreach, programming and inquiry for future generations of students, communities, researchers and other scholars from Western New York and around the world.

PROJ EC T PL AY WE ST E R N N E W YO R K Project Play Western New York is a collective impact initiative driven and funded by the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation’s Youth Sports and Recreation focus area, in partnership with the Community Foundation. Nearly 90 individuals are involved in shaping the initiative and focused on ensuring all Western New York kids have the opportunity to be active through sport. Throughout 2019, Project Play WNY supported one of its goals of reintroducing free play by hosting numerous Free Play Days that were free and open to the public. At these events, kids and adults were invited to enjoy a variety of backyard-style games.

Legendary hockey goalie Dominik Hasek, who spent nearly a decade wowing Sabres fans at the Aud and then at Marine Midland Arena, established The Dominik Hasek Sports & Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation in 2001 as a way to give back to the city that welcomed him. Dominik started the fund with $1 million, and to date, it has granted out over $850,000 to the Dominik Hasek Youth Hockey League (Hasek’s Heroes). The Community Foundation made it easy for Dominik to support the great organization he started, and through this fund, he has helped countless youth in Buffalo experience the joy of ice hockey.

FA M I LI E S O F FA NA FANA, WNY, Inc., is an organization of more than 300 families who have adopted children from an orphanage in Bogotá, Colombia. When its board was preparing to establish a scholarship fund, Paul Fuzak, Executive Director, had no problem recommending the Community Foundation. “We had such a positive experience when we established my sister’s fund and then expanded it when my father died [the Joan M. & Victor T. Fuzak Fund],” Paul said. “It was a natural tie-in.” The FANA Fund provides college scholarships for all of the adopted children and their siblings, regardless of where they were born. In addition to raising money for the scholarship fund, FANA has helped build a new orphanage in Bogotá, and provides healthcare and education for orphans who cannot be adopted and prenatal care for mothers.

C H A R LOT T E ALB R I G HT With a family legacy rooted deep into the arts landscape in Western New York, Charlotte Albright ensured that her own love for animals would also live on for generations to come. The great-granddaughter of Elbridge G. Spaulding, Buffalo’s 13th mayor, and granddaughter of industrialist John J. Albright, whose generous gift in 1900 led to the building of the AlbrightKnox Art Gallery, Charlotte never married or had children and while she too was a talented artist, she had a special relationship with her animals. 92 Charlotte turned to her trusted attorney when it came time to ensure her love of animals would carry on, and established the Charlotte Albright Fund at the Community Foundation. The Fund would be invested and the annual distributions would be made to the SPCA serving Erie County for decades to come. Charlotte passed away in 2007 at the age of 97. However, her love of animals and a deep connection to her community and the arts will continue to be recognized in her name for generations to come. 62

In 2000, the Lockport community lost a giant when Barbara Ennis passed away. Barbara, a profoundly committed civic activist and business leader, who co-owned Mondottos Seafood with her husband, Tim, bravely battled pancreatic cancer.

93

After she passed, Barbara’s circle of friends stepped forward to honor her legacy of giving. They came to the Community Foundation where they knew their wishes would be carried out and the funds would go to support important causes in Barbara’s memory. The Barbara Ennis Endowment Fund was started to support research for pancreatic cancer. The endowment fund is also to be used by the Niagara Area Foundation to meet community needs. The Barbara Ennis Memorial Volunteer Scholarship was created to reward students for community service and volunteerism.

Giving Back is a Way of Life. As a local businessman, Charles Balbach feels directly connected to the community that helped him become successful. 96 Now that he is retired, he spends time expressing his thanks through a range of charitable endeavors. Recognizing the community’s needs will change over time, Charles has chosen to leave a gift in his Will to the Community Foundation to address the most pressing needs of tomorrow’s community. “With its history of careful stewardship and knowledge of the community, I trust that the Community Foundation will make good choices as to how my fund should be used after my lifetime,” Charles said.

DAV I D Z E B R O Local businessman David Zebro cites the Community Foundation’s investment returns and extensive knowledge of community needs as the reasons he chose to partner with the Community Foundation when he and his late wife, Susan, opened The Zebro Fund. “The 98 Foundation’s Investment Committee includes some of the best financial experts in our region and they produce above average returns and beat benchmarks,” said David. “The Foundation also knows what organizations are having the greatest impact on the issues I care about. My family has been very fortunate and I think we have an obligation to give something back—the Community Foundation helps us to do this easily and efficiently. I think going forward they have the strategic focus in our areas of interest that will benefit the community.”

ROS E M A R I E STE E B

Personally and Professionally Inspiring Generosity. Rosemarie Steeb was a CPA and small business owner who consistently recommended the Community 99 Foundation as a valuable partner to her clients who were charitably minded. Before her passing, she established the Rosemarie C. Steeb Endowment Fund at the Community Foundation. Rosemarie was determined to use her financial acumen and resources to support her community. In 2016, Rosemarie was honored posthumously with the Gordon R. Gross, Esq. Award for Professional Advisors. She is remembered for her kind and generous spirit and her deep commitment to the Western New York community. Rosemarie was always striving to provide effective solutions for her clients’ needs. It was this commitment that caused Rosemarie to consistently recommend the Community Foundation as a valuable partner to her clients. “The Foundation really listens to what donors want to accomplish with their giving, and because of its reputation, they can rest assured that their wishes will be carried out in perpetuity,” she once said.
