MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOREVER MICHAEL R. BUTLER & GLENYS MASCHOFF BUTLER FUND Whether they are kayaking, traveling or volunteering, Michael and Glenys Butler have embraced life, their community and giving back in a meaningful way. The couple moved to Michael’s hometown, East Aurora, from Minneapolis when he retired as an airline pilot and Glenys retired from her work as a psychotherapist. They fell in love with the community almost immediately and wanted to be a part of the inspiring resurgence happening in our region. “We progressively became more and more involved in the community,” said Michael. “As we did, the community started to feel like our family and we wanted to ensure we were doing our part to help out causes that were important to us, now and forever.” Michael and Glenys felt responsible for planning the distribution of their assets to benefit their community for generations to come. They were referred to the Community Foundation by a foundation in the Midwest and knew right away they had found the right philanthropic partner. “One of the first things that I liked about the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo is the fact that we could set up our own foundation within the Foundation and support the charities that we were most interested in,” said Glenys. “Now the Community Foundation is also exposing us to new ideas, new issues and new possibilities.”

Michael and Glenys are now confident their generosity will benefit the community long after they are gone. “We don’t have kids, but this gives us a way to feel that our family name will carry on forever in this great area, with these good people, which fulfills a lot of things for us,” said Michael.

“We love the community. We love the people and the Community Foundation gives us an opportunity to go on being a part of it in a very reliable way.” Michael Butler

BLAZING A TRAIL FOR FUTURE LEADERS NORMAN GOLDFARB AWARD FUND A tireless fighter for human rights, Norman Goldfarb dedicated years of leadership to ensure equal opportunities for all people in all walks of life. He truly believed that everyone needed to work together to bring our nation’s democratic ideals closer to reality. His energy and capacity to inspire others made him a champion for racial equity in Western New York. During his lifetime, Norman devoted enormous time and attention to the Citizens Council on Human Relations, and after he passed away in 1983, the organization’s Board of Directors wanted to permanently honor his legacy. The original Board Members, John Hoffman, Abel Fink and Frank Mesiah, chose to establish a fund at the Community Foundation to recognize adults, youth or organizations that demonstrate the same spirit and perseverance to advance human relations and human rights as Norman did during his lifetime.

“I come from a diverse family,” said Marcus Crenshaw in his award application letter, in which he reflects on his family’s experiences with racial equity. “Because of that, I had a greater understanding of people being created equal at birth.”

“Marcus is extremely personable and is able to bring people from different backgrounds together,” said Commander Anthony Deaville, Western New York Maritime Charter School, who provided an award recommendation for Marcus. “His Frank Mesiah presents the 2015 Norman Goldfarb Youth Award to Marcus Crenshaw at the National Federation for dedication and Just Communities annual luncheon. motivation to do well have made him a ‘go to’ guy for me.”

In 2015, the Norman Goldfarb Youth Award was presented to Marcus Crenshaw, a senior at the Western New York Maritime Charter School, whose family struggled with racial equity.

Marcus says he plans to use the award toward a four-year college education in Norman’s honor. With the Community Foundation as a trusted partner, the remarkable legacy of Norman Goldfarb will live on through future generations.

A FAMILY’S WISH FOR A LASTING LEGACY WILLIAM KENNETH SCHMITT FUND Born before the Great Depression, Darwin and Ruth Schmitt met in college, fell in love and now reflect on all the blessings they have experienced in their 65 years of marriage, including their children and grandchildren, their church and having the ability to give back. The family moved around the country as Darwin’s career in engineering took off and eventually landed them in Buffalo. When the company he worked for was sold, Darwin retired, and the couple saw an opportunity to reduce their tax burden by funding future charitable wishes while honoring their son who passed away as a teenager. For more than two decades, the Schmitts have enjoyed supporting causes that are important to them in their community and beyond, in their son’s name. The couple has been impressed with how far their funds have stretched over the years.

“We set up the fund in 1988 and since that time, I think it has doubled in value and we have paid out more than double the value through the Community Foundation to issues and causes important to us,” said Darwin. “I wish the Foundation was handling all my finances. It is so exceptionally good.” The Schmitts trust that the Community Foundation will be a good steward of their generosity for generations to come. “We appreciate that there is a very thorough process to ensure that these precious grant dollars are spent as effectively and efficiently as possible,” said Ruth. “When you have been blessed a lot, you really need to pass it on.”

“We both came from humble beginnings with parents that instilled in us strong values that we want to pass on to our children and grandchildren.” Darwin Schmitt

GROWING BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS BUFFALO GREEN FUND With an incredibly rich architectural history, it is easy to overlook how trees and green spaces contribute to Western New York’s beauty. The responsibility for those green spaces often falls on those who recognize the difference a tree, blooming flowers and a new park bench can make. The Buffalo Green Fund is committed to cultivating, promoting, fostering, sponsoring and developing urban beautification and engaging the community in the process. The Buffalo Green Fund was formed in the 1970s when Dutch elm disease wiped out thousands of trees in the City of Buffalo and the government could not afford to replace them. Still going strong today with a dedicated and passionate volunteer leadership team, the organization recognized that it was not efficiently maximizing its assets, which were invested in multiple vehicles. To identify an investment partner, the Board embarked on a comprehensive process that led them to the Community Foundation.

“The Community Foundation is a great vehicle for us to invest the money that we’re receiving so we can grow it and do even more projects to improve Buffalo’s green spaces.” Wayne Parry, Buffalo Green Fund Board Treasurer

“We were impressed with the Community Foundation’s management and diversification of assets,” said Wayne Parry, Buffalo Green Fund Board Treasurer. “There was also comfort knowing we maintained flexibility in our withdrawals.” The Board also felt confident they were protecting and growing their assets. “When our organization receives support, we want to ensure that in addition to keeping the dollars safe, we are leveraging them to maximize generosity,” said Cindy Kincaide, Buffalo Green Fund Board President. “The Community Foundation’s reporting mechanisms, like the quarterly investment reviews, impressed us and allow us to report back to our Board and constituents about what is going on with their investment.” Fast-forward into the future where the roots planted today by the Buffalo Green Fund will continue to enhance our beautiful city.

A LOVE FOR ANIMALS THAT CARRIES ON CHARLOTTE ALBRIGHT FUND With a family deeply rooted in the Western New York arts landscape, Charlotte Albright ensured that her own love for animals would also live on for generations to come. When paging through her personal photo albums, you’ll see many photos of beloved family pets that paint a clear picture of her kinship with animals. The great-granddaughter of Elbridge G. Spaulding, Buffalo’s 13th mayor, and granddaughter of industrialist John J. Albright, whose generous gift in 1900 led to the building of the AlbrightKnox Art Gallery, Charlotte never married or had children. She was a talented artist who had a special relationship with her animals and was considered a horse-racing enthusiast. To honor her wishes, Charlotte turned to her trusted attorney, the late Robert Plache, to ensure her legacy and love of animals would

carry on. Together, they determined that her estate would establish the Charlotte Albright Fund at the Community Foundation. The Fund would be invested and annual distributions would be made to the SPCA serving Erie County. Charlotte passed away in 2007 at the age of 97. However, her love of animals and a deep connection to her community will continue to be recognized in her name for generations to come.

CHANGING NEEDS CHANGING LIVES There’s no denying that our region is on the move. As our community continues to evolve—so will the issues and challenges we face every day. We are grateful for the more than 100 Change Makers who have designated their endowments to address the changing needs of the community over time. These visionaries recognize that the needs we

>

take on today are not always the ones we will encounter tomorrow. Today, our Change Makers’ generosity allows the Community Foundation to advance four community goals identified through a thoughtful process that will drive long-term change. Our current goals include: improving educational achievement for students in low-income communities, increasing racial/ethnic equity, enhancing and leveraging natural resources, and strengthening the region as a center for architecture, arts and culture. Read about some of the ways we are advancing these goals on pages 23–32. Because of your vision, our future has never looked brighter.

Setting the wheels in motion

REMOVING BARRIERS TO SUCCESS SAY YES BUFFALO “After struggling with behavioral and attendance issues, our Family Support Specialist at school connected with Tyrell in a way no one had before. He began working with a tutor, a counselor and joined the football team and it all just started getting better and better,” said Dionna, mother of Tyrell who received supports from Say Yes Buffalo. Identifying any and all opportunities to help a student succeed is the driving force behind Say Yes Buffalo. Its work goes beyond providing a scholarship for post-secondary education. By developing easily accessible, sustainable services for students and families, Say Yes Buffalo and its partners are addressing the barriers preventing students from achieving academic success. Tyrell is a perfect example of how a Family Support Specialist can help a student reach his or her full potential. Tyrell was suspended frequently and his mother struggled with a solution, so she transferred him to another school. After meeting and establishing a relationship with Tyrell, his Family Support Specialist determined the cause of Tyrell’s behavioral issues–he was bullied as a child. Armed with that knowledge, Tyrell’s Family Support Specialist helped him find a counselor to deal with his anger issues and a tutor to help him catch up academically. The transformation was remarkable. “Slowly but surely Tyrell started opening up to me and I really loved that,” said Dionna. “It helped the whole family.” There are thousands of students just like Tyrell who are benefitting from Say Yes Buffalo support services that were expanded in 2015 by: ►

artnering with Erie County and the P Community Foundation to open 15 more mental health clinics in schools, bringing the total to 42; nrolling all 33,000 Buffalo Public School E students in the Student Management System to identify intervention needs;

tarting a mentoring program to help Say Yes S scholars transition from high school to college; reating an internship program with C the Buffalo Niagara Partnership to match Say Yes scholars with paid summer internships at local businesses to help them develop professional skills.

And the results are encouraging: ►

T he graduation rate for the Buffalo Public Schools Class of 2015 increased to 61 percent, the highest it has been in a decade; T he number of Buffalo public high school students entering college increased by 9 percentage points.

This is all possible because of generous donors who have committed more than $23 million to fund the scholarships that go hand in hand with critical support services. With a committed team of community donors and partners, we are putting our students on a path to success that will contribute to long-term economic growth for our region.

A SOURCE OF HOPE FOR OUR WATERWAYS RAIN CHECK BUFFALO “We always talk about saving and conserving water inside the house,” said Suzanne Gracie, as she watched her young children fill watering cans from a rain barrel outside their Buffalo home. “Now we are teaching them the same outside the house.” The Gracie family is just one of the thousands of homeowners that applied to participate in the Rain Check Buffalo downspout disconnect and rain barrel program that launched in 2015.

The Community Foundation and the City of Buffalo, in partnership with Riverkeeper and People United for Sustainable Housing Buffalo, launched Rain Check Buffalo, a water quality effort and community engagement initiative.

The program was made possible through a coordinated partnership with the Buffalo Sewer Authority and the Community Foundation, which attracted a matching grant from a national foundation–The Funders’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities. This grant, along with the Community Foundation’s match, funded Rain Check Buffalo, a citywide effort to manage rainwater to protect water quality and quantity. Through the program, city residents were able to sign up to have their downspouts disconnected and/or get a rain barrel installed on their property.

It is a small step residents can take to remove pressure from the city’s sewer system, originally built in the late 1930s. Currently, when the system is overwhelmed by stormwater or melting snow, it pushes raw sewage directly into our creeks, streams and lakes. Disconnecting a home’s downspouts helps to keep stormwater out of the sewage system, which decreases the chances of an overflow. The Gracie family’s rain barrel was installed over the summer and provides a great teaching tool for the children to see how water can be collected and reused.

“I like that we are collecting this free rainwater in a safe way and then using it around the house to water our plants and our children are having fun with it.” Suzanne Gracie, Buffalo homeowner

STRENGTHENING THE ARTS FOR A DECADE FUND FOR THE ARTS Ten years ago, a group of funders came together, representing public, private, family and corporate foundations, to join forces to make a greater impact together. The group became known as the Fund for the Arts. Now a decade later, the Fund for the Arts, convened and administered by the Community Foundation, has distributed more than $2.6 million to support and strengthen our region’s arts and culture sector. Western New York boasts a rich history of arts and culture–from the Roycroft Campus to The Colored Musicians Club–that continues to benefit local residents and the regional economy. It has been estimated that every dollar invested in the arts returns nearly $10 in economic impact. Understanding that, the Fund for the Arts has committed to boosting the local arts community by strengthening the base of support. In addition to providing emergency relief through two rounds of county budget cuts, the Fund for the Arts supported a comprehensive capacity building initiative and the creation of the Arts Services Initiative and Arts Partners for Learning. The Arts Services Initiative promotes the arts and culture sector’s vital role in economic development and the community through capacity building, collaboration and advocacy. One program of the Arts Services Initiative is the Arts Access Pass Program, which provides low-income individuals and families with free tickets to participate in arts and culture activities like Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra concerts at Kleinhans Music Hall or Explore & More Children’s Museum. There are now more than 165 Arts Access Pass members, with new members being added on a rolling basis.

Arts Partners for Learning, managed by Young Audiences of WNY, builds audience support by expanding access to arts education for children in Western New York through creative learning curriculum in classrooms. By helping to strengthen our arts sector, the Fund for the Arts is putting our cultural gems center stage.

Arts Partners for Learning, managed by Young Audiences of WNY, demonstrates how arts can be integrated into classroom curricula to provide quality creative learning programs.

A spirit that moves us all

CREATING A REGION READY FOR THE FUTURE GREATER BUFFALO RACIAL EQUITY ROUNDTABLE Buffalo is building a new shared future, one with prosperity, equity and opportunity, on every side of Main Street. We all want healthy, vibrant neighborhoods where the American Dream comes to life and a good-paying job so we can support our families. We want to leave the city a better place for future generations and give our children the best opportunities to reach their full potential. In 2015, 32 civic leaders accepted an invitation to advance racial equity in our region by participating in the Greater Buffalo Racial Equity Roundtable. Together we are tackling racial equity gaps that prevent us all from moving forward. By understanding what contributes to the racial equity gaps and committing to change together, we can accelerate solutions. The Greater Buffalo Racial Equity Roundtable is developing strategies to address barriers to equity. These will be refined in consultation with the community. Momentum is already underway to close racial equity gaps with the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative, Say Yes Buffalo and the Buffalo Opportunity Pledge. We are opening the floodgates that will allow every person in our community to reach their full potential so we can move forward together. We do not have a good idea or a good pair of hands to waste as we build a prosperous future for all.

PROVIDING LIFE-CHANGING OPPORTUNITIES COMMUNITIES OF GIVING LEGACY INITIATIVE Showing students they can have a meaningful impact on their community is an important part of the work of the Communities of Giving Legacy Initiative (CGLI). This group of community leaders of color aims to create positive change in the lives of youth of color in low-income communities through access to people, places and experiences, thanks to generous donors and dedicated volunteers. Thousands of youth of color in our community were given opportunities in 2015 that allowed them to see a bright, successful path to their future. Local opportunities included attending the UB Distinguished Speakers Series to hear Magic Johnson, Liz Murray, John Legend and others offer motivational messages from personal experiences. For the second year in a row, General Motors (GM) Tonawanda Engine Plant brought local students to tour its headquarters in Detroit, Michigan, through CGLI’s Success Looks Like Me® program. This year, more than a dozen young women traveled to meet females of color blazing a trail in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields at GM.

“It helped me to understand in-depth the experiences that women of color face in the auto industry. It was great to hear about their accomplishments in STEM careers.”

Fatima Ramos, an engineer at General Motors, with Temara Cross, a Junior at Hutch-Tech High School

“It is thanks to you that we were able to see how we can impact our community.”

Serge Muharareni, Senior at Hutch-Tech High School

Students also embarked on a transformative trip to Washington, D.C., in partnership with the Close Up Foundation where they experienced government in action by visiting our local elected officials’ offices and witnessing historic Supreme Court rulings. The CGLI also continued its annual Pay It Forward Awards by recognizing the following organizations and individuals that exemplify its mission: Southwest Airlines, The Buffalo Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Honorable Hugh B. Scott and Cynthia Edwards. Together, we are showing students of color living in low-income communities a future full of possibility.

THE LEGACY SOCIETY Managing the charitable legacies of generous individuals is central to the work of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo. The Community Foundation Legacy Society was created in 1999 to acknowledge those individuals who have committed to supporting the community in the future through a planned gift. According to their specific directions, the Community Foundation will support the organizations, issues and communities these individuals care about, in their names, forever in Western New York and beyond. Making arrangements for your charitable legacy is a simple process and we are here to help. If you are interested in supporting the community beyond your lifetime, please contact Betsy Constantine at (716) 852-2857, ext. 217, or betsyc@cfgb.org.

“A client’s Will enables them to provide for beneficiaries and institutions long after the client has passed away. The use of the Community Foundation to accomplish these objectives is ideal. Its corporate administration provides financial responsibility and allows for flexibility in the administration of the fund if the client wishes to grant such discretion. The use of Community Foundation in estate planning plays a great role in shaping our community’s future and has my unqualified endorsement.” Robert Kresse, Esq. OUR APPROACH TO CHARITABLE INVESTMENTS The Community Foundation’s Investment Committee has oversight of more than $300 million in charitable assets. Members of the Committee are specifically recruited because of their knowledge of investments. They receive advice throughout the year from our independent investment consulting firm, Colonial Consulting, LLC, which specializes in advising large endowments and foundations. Together they work to allocate the charitable assets entrusted to the Community Foundation’s care into a highly diversified mix of global equities, fixed income and alternative investment strategies, which include more than 38 different investment management organizations pursuing strategies within 13 different asset classes. Within each asset class, the Community Foundation seeks to utilize world-class investment managers who are able to outperform appropriate target market benchmarks over long periods.

INVESTMENT PERFORMANCE The investments of the Community Foundation continue to consistently outperform our benchmarks, on average adding 6.2 percent per year over the last 10 years, resulting in a nationwide ranking* consistently in the top 25 percent. This growth provides significant value to the charitable assets entrusted to the Community Foundation. In 2015, the investment pool posted a 0.4 percent loss for the year. While we are never satisfied with negative results, this result outperformed market results as a whole. As an organization, the Foundation remains focused on long-term investment results, which continue to be very strong. These results are the product of the Foundation's decision to maintain a strategy that is driven by long-term objectives while utilizing the size of its asset pool to access exceptionally capable investment management firms.

TOTAL GRANTS TO CHARITY SINCE 1978

How It Works: This endowment was established with $2.1 million in 1978 through a legacy gift (bequest) to the Community Foundation from a parent in honor of his son who died tragically as a young man. Today, decades after both father and son have passed on, the initial gift has grown to $6.6 million all while giving $7.7 million in grants to the organizations they cared about. Their fund will continue to honor this family’s charitable giving legacy by making grants to their favorite organizations in their name, forever.

EXPLORING NEW PATHS TO PROSPERITY NIAGARA AREA FOUNDATION Getting to work was literally and figuratively the driving force for the Niagara Area Foundation in 2015. The volunteer leadership council got to work convening community members to discover how they could work together to address two challenges–workforce development and transportation–identified at a county-wide Solutions Forum.

Pictured left to right are the panelists who participated in the 2015 Transportation Forum: Carolyn Bright, New York State Department of Labor; Liz Callahan, Buffalo Niagara Partnership; Kelly Dixon, Greater Buffalo-Niagara Regional Transportation Council; Adam Gibbons, Community Collaborative Consulting; and Gary Wozniak, Recovery Park.

More than 70 community members attended a community conversation in October 2015, led by the Niagara Area Foundation in collaboration with Niagara University, to gain a deeper understanding of the intersection between workforce development and transportation. To do so, national and regional experts were invited to talk about best practices and lessons learned as they worked to address these same issues. Together, the participants discussed opportunities to expand transportation access for local workers. In 2016, the Niagara Area Foundation,

a geographic division of the Community Foundation, will begin to explore the role of philanthropy in creating solutions to the needs identified. Since its formation in 2000, the Niagara Area Foundation has distributed more than $1 million to nonprofits that support a mission to connect people, ideas and resources to improve lives in Niagara County. For more information on the Niagara Area Foundation, please contact Holly Mergenhagen, Esq. at (716) 852-2857, ext. 207.

ONE COMMUNITY’S GATEWAY TO PROGRESS WYOMING FOUNDATION In today’s high-speed world, everything from job applications to school enrollment forms are online. Providing access to digital technology has become critical to the fundamental role libraries play in the heart of many rural communities. After hearing from residents how vital the libraries are to keeping the community connected, the Wyoming Foundation recognized an opportunity to support the nine county libraries. By bringing them together in 2015, the libraries were able to discuss common challenges and identify solutions together. This was the first time they were able to collaborate in a convenient way. That is exactly the mission of the Wyoming Foundation, a geographic division of the Community Foundation, in action. The local leadership team is committed to strengthening the quality of life in Wyoming County by

identifying the needs of its residents and finding ways to work together to solve them. In addition to promoting communication among the libraries, the Wyoming Foundation also assembled county healthcare providers through the Thiel Roundtable to discuss common issues and explore new healthcare programming. In 2016, the Thiel Roundtable will work together on a new behavioral health partial hospitalization program. For more information on how you can get involved and support the efforts of the Wyoming Foundation, please call (585) 285-4135.

TOTAL GRANTS TO CHARITY SINCE 1975

At her death in 1975, a widow gifted $400,000 to the Community Foundation to create a fund as a tribute to her late beloved husband. Originally from Germany, the couple made Buffalo their home and she wished to take care of their adopted community in perpetuity. By the end of 2015 the fund had grown to $1.3 million and had given another $1.6 million to support the changing needs of the community.

Horace L. Mann* left his legacy to the Community Foundation to be used to address the most critical needs of the community over time. This legacy of generosity continues to live on as the dollars he bequeathed to the Community Foundation continue to support the Buffalo’s Green & Healthy Homes Initiative, which helps families in low-income neighborhoods address home health and safety hazards like lead poisoning, and improve energy efficiency.
