Capstone | Detroit | Hudson’s Site | 2014 This project was based in the heart of downtown Detroit at the the site of where the department store Hudson’s used to be. The objective of this project was to create a program that we thought suited the location and its surroundings. The function of this project was a historical museum as well as a commercial office which included associated spaces.

Historical Society Precedents
Location of Current Arizona History Museum is located on the edge of the campus at the University of Arizona.not very optimal. After Touring the Museum myself, It was not very inviting as well.
The Historical Society for the University of Arizona is locatved on the Edge of campus and away from the main activity on campus. The building is also not very inviting.
The historical Society will provide a viewing display for the public and visitors of Detroit. It will provide information about its urban history and that of other cities also. Information put on display will be a collection of the research conducted through the Urban Research Institute and previously existing information

AIAS Arid Cities Competition | Tucson | 2014 This project was a competition which my team and I placed second in, that was put on by the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS). The Competition was a proposal for two different sites one being in Tucson, Arizona, and the other being in Phoenix, Arizona. Because of the proxemity to Tucson, we chose that site. The project was then focused on conserving water and integrating the outdoor space, commercial space, and residential space.

Center for integrative learning
This design proposal for the University of Arizona’s second Integrative Learning Center is located on campus in Tucson, Arizona. The program consisted of spacial layouts where students could study privately or in group setting while still having the opportunity to use the ground floor as a means of direct routes to the nearby buildings. This design also takes advantage of tucson’s climate in providing well placed indoor outdoor spaces.

Cantilever Project
Concept Statement: To develop and explore a stressed-skin system comprised of criss-crossing wood members to develop a very strong, arched wood skin that can resist the forces of thrust, tension, compression and applied loads.
Material List
Material List
2 Sheets 1/16” oak wood board Basic leather strapping 1/8” or 3/16” cable whats lower cost Needle and thread Steel Carabiner
60 sq. Ft of Pine -light, strong and urable Basic leather strapping 1/8” or 3/16” cable whats lower cost steel washers, ferrrules Steel Carabiner
The below Force Diagrams explaing moment, shear, tension and compression below are how we derrived our form, the top image below.
Iteration 2
Structures Class Group Project Group : Chris Maltez, Matthew Grove, Sasha Ramos, Hamad Mubarak
We predict to be the breaking point when the force is applied because the 4 layers of stripping is all that holds it together.
When the downward force is applied the arch will flatten as seen above to the right.
Team 2.
Our Final Proposal is a closed system the resolves the outward thrust that could potentially flatten our cantilever when the downward force is applied. WHen constructed the many vertical, horizontal and bottom piece come together as one skin system.
How it is put together.
Notes: With the flat bottom plate in compression, our hope is to take the downward force that will be applied and use the compression in generates to resist thrust.
The criss-crossing of grain and orientain in the skin resists the multi-latitude forces that will affect its shape and its total strength. Glue will be used to adhere the wood strips to one another, only the leather strapping used to keep the cable in line will be pinned to the wood.
Anthony Dao, Mathew Grove, Chris Maltez, Sasha Ramos
Our system works with a compressive bottom plate, then between the outer lips of the plate a layer of vertical arched wood strips creates the base layer for our skin to be rapped around. On top of the vertical strips a layer of horizontal strips will be layed down. The horizontal strips are not as wide as the vertical ones in order to retrieve a more consistant arch. Then we have one more layer of vertical strips and a final layer of horizontal strips completeing the skin system.
This project was an exploration through the usage of a monocoque structural system and stressed skin. The group Integrated the bending of a field material and a rib system similar to that of an airplane wing or a boat hull. The group worked through a series of construction methods issues and was able to create a stressed skin cantilever which operated precisely how it was predicted. Cantilever 1
SHOP DWGS
The top of the cantilever will be in tension while the bottom will be in compression when the force is applied Force Reaction Diagram
As seen in the plan, the shape is force/form specific narrow where the load is picked up and wider where the most stress will occur.
Team 2.2, Stressed Skin
We chose to maximize the length to 8’-8” to offset the difference in the magnitude of force, (P= B*D). Magnitude = force multiplied by the length

Concrete - Cast Shell Project
Specific voids were created to lighten the load and particularly direct the forces loaded on top of the Shell
The corners were reinforced by steel dowels to help with resolving the stresses occuring along the edges.
Structures Class Group Project Group : Chris Maltez, Matthew Grove, Sasha Ramos, Hamad Mubarak
The edges of the voids were shaped specifically to the anticipated travel direction of forces to help with load bearing

Alth Although h the th form f off this thi project j t was created t d first fi t in i a digital world, the actual forming was a blend of old and new methods. A plexi glass sheet was first laser cut to form, then a blowtorch was used to heat the plexi glass which would then fall naturally into the arch form once a predetermined distance between the two ends had been established. The arch would then be inverted which would give us the right - side - up arch. Once this phase was completed, the next phase was to use sheet metal to create a larger scale model for the final 1000 lb. test....it passed.

Bus Shelters | Tucson | 2013
The Bus Shelters Site was located in Marana County which is part of Tucson, Arizona. During this project, I acted as project manager and fabricated two bus shelters while reading off of a set of drawings, each were about 10 feet by 20 feet, and one for each side of the road. During this project, I obtained my certified welder’s license. I also coordinated and worked along side with other students.
