2011 Annual Report

Thoughts From the Board of Directors President Thanks to generous support from our donors and community, 2011 was a monumental year for the Community Foundation.

First and foremost, we opened our new Erin Pipkin office on the Square Board of Directors in Martinsville.

President 2011 Opening a second location in the county allowed us to reach and help more individuals, and we saw a notable increase in the number of visitors to our offices, applications for scholarships, and inquiries about opening new funds. We’d like to thank again Craig and Mary Fenneman for their donation, which made the building purchase possible. In addition, many businesses, families, and individuals stepped

up to donate to the “Building Fund” during our short campaign.

The 2011 year was a time of transition for our Board. Building upon the example left by retiring board members Ruth Rusie, Karen Yeager, Jim Brack, Doug Garrison, and Lily Lawson, we welcomed new board members Lisa Arnold, Jenna Mellady, David Keister, Marty Miller, Gary Oakes, Kristin Oberle, and Patty Wood. We also added Program Officer Diana Hoffman to our list of talented staff members.

We awarded 47 scholarships worth $73,040 to high school seniors and adult students throughout Morgan County. This is the largest amount the foundation has awarded to date. Not included in that total are two full-tution scholarships from the Lilly Endowment, worth a potential of $160,000 per person over the four-year scholarship term.

The Community Foundation awarded $25,696 in Matching and Arts grants for 2011, funding projects from 20 nonprofit groups and organizations. Many groups were able to fund projects to benefit our community.

We continued to assist the Kendrick Foundation by acting as their staff, helping distribute over $1.4 million in grants and scholarships between both foundations.

Thank you for supporting the Community Foundation and helping us make Morgan County a better place to live, work and raise our families. We are happy to share our successes with you, our donors and friends.

From the Executive Director This year we want to call attention to the ever-increasing list of donors to the Community Foundation and send a special “thank you” to the citizens of Morgan County.

The individuals and Tom Zoss organizations that Executive Director support the funds we manage, and the causes that have opened funds we manage, are building an amazing record during these tough economic times.

The CFMC is building assets despite the recession, a tribute to Morgan County as we take care of our own.

We also want to thank those who are supporting our operations with contributions to our Operating Fund, and especially those who join the Millennium Society with sustaining gifts for our operations. As we grow the load on our small staff is increasing. Most of the donations we receive are restricted as to use, so the funds go directly towards those restricted uses. Only a donation to our operating fund helps us to pay for the staff, equipment, professional advisors and insurance that keeps the organization running and able to give the best service.

Grants Provide Endless Service Possibilities In 2011, the Community Foundation of Morgan County awarded $25,696 in matching and arts grants to Morgan County nonprofit organizations.

Each fall, the CFMC offers matching grants and arts grants. Matching grants require that the grant applicant must raise an amount at least equal to what they ask for on the application. Arts grants require no matching funds.

Grants are provided through the CFMC’s CommonWealth fund.

The foundation aims to support creative approaches to community needs and problems by making grants which benefit a wide range of people.

Lilly Endowment Community Scholars & Finalists The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship program offers two full-tuition scholarships for Morgan County residents with a diploma from a regionally accredited Indiana High School and who will be first-time college students. These scholarships must be used to pursue baccalaureate degrees at any accredited public or private Indiana college or university.

In 2011, Tyler Huff and Daniel Kerstiens were chosen as the Lilly Endowment Community Scholars.

Foundation Staff

The Community Foundation of Morgan County, Inc. was founded on January 5, 2000, with the merging of the Mooresville Community Foundation and the Morgan County Community Foundation.

Our professional staff is ready to serve the Morgan County community. We come from a variety of backgrounds and bring our own expertise to the foundation.

Each year the Community Foundation of Morgan County distributes thousands of dollars in grants and scholarships to local non-profit organizations and to students.
