Mission The Mission of the Community Foundation is to impact communities throughout Northwest Mississippi by connecting people who care with causes that matter. Our goal is to build permanent charitable endowments to support nonprofits, churches and schools.

Board of Directors The Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi is governed by an 18-member volunteer board of directors who are chosen for their individual qualities of integrity, capability and knowledge of Northwest Mississippi. These directors bring diverse experience, expertise and perspectives for financial oversight, policies, governance, grants and more. In addition, they have the responsibility to ensure that our organization is effectively fulfilling our mission by making certain that our Foundation’s initiatives, grantmaking, investment and donor stewardship activities all support and advance our charitable mission. Our Board invites you to join in our mission of “Connecting People Who Care with Causes that Matter.”

Message from the Chairman As we review another year of growing philanthropy in the 11 counties we serve, it is important to reflect on the year itself and the moments that made it meaningful. Please know that our impact is a collection of heartfelt choices by donors who want to enhance the quality of life in their communities. In this annual report, we want to thank our donors who partner with the Community Foundation so they can preserve the memory of a loved one, support the nonprofit or church they care about, or enhance the quality of life in Northwest Mississippi for generations to come. We are so blessed to work with so many people who have made charitable giving a priority in their lives. Their gifts send kids to college, help people in need, preserve arts and culture, and benefit the community in many other ways – for generations to come. Each grant given reflects a dynamic story from a donor wanting to make a difference. Pastor Bartholomew Orr Chairman of the Board of Directors

Welcome Keith Fulcher as New Vice President Keith Fulcher joined the Community Foundation on August 1st as Executive Vice President. Keith comes to us after serving Delta State University for 23 years as executive director of its Alumni Foundation, director of development and most recently as special assistant to the president. He has also volunteered in fundraising for other charities such as the Catholic Diocese of Jackson, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the Cleveland Rotary Club. A native of Vicksburg, Keith was previously a principal, coach and teacher in Vicksburg, Jackson and Biloxi. Keith is married and has three children. “The foundation’s Board wanted to strengthen the depth of our leadership at the foundation, and Keith brings excellent knowledge and experience in both philanthropy and Northwest Mississippi. His work in education is a definite plus, too, since that is one of our foundation’s priorities,” said Community Foundation Chairman Pastor Bartholomew Orr.

Community Foundation Opens Office in Clarksdale The Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi opened a second location to expand services and better serve the Delta region. “As the Community Foundation continues to grow, our Board of Directors recognized a need to grow our staff’s capacity, expertise and service area in order to advance our mission and strive for greater impact,” said Tom Pittman, President and CEO. “This second location will help us fulfill our mission of connecting people who care with causes that matter.” The Clarksdale office is located at 133 Sharkey Ave.

Welcome Kara Dulaney as New Volunteer Coordinator Kara Dulaney joined us this year as volunteer coordinator for the Maddox Foundation Volunteer Center / Northwest Hub, a program of the Community Foundation. Kara has a Bachelor’s of degree in Psychology and a Master’s of Science degree in vocational and rehabilitation counseling. She lives in Tunica and is staffing the Clarksdale office. She joins Brenda Smith, the director of the Maddox Foundation Volunteer Center/Northwest Hub, in engaging volunteers for all nonprofits in our region and helping them become more financially sustainable. 2019 A NNUAL REP O RT

The Delta Conversation with Archie Manning at the GRAMMY Museum in Cleveland brought together 240 individuals for a fun and inspiring lunch. Archie fondly reminisced about growing up in the Delta in an on-stage discussion with Community Foundation Board member, Tom Gresham and embraced philanthropy for causes like children and education in the Delta. Tim Holston, who started life as a Box Project recipient near Itta Bena and has now earned a Ph.D. in computer science at Ole Miss, inspired the audience by reminding everyone that they can become more than what they think they are. The event, which was chaired by Becky Nowell, enabled the Community Foundation to donate $5,000 to the Box Project endowment in honor of Dr. Holston; $5,000 to the Sen. Willie Simmons GRAMMY Museum Endowment in memory of former Community Foundation Board member and founding GRAMMY Museum Chair Lucy Janoush; and, $20,000 to establish the Archie Manning Endowment for Drew and north Sunflower County. An auction of a football autographed by Archie and his two NFL sons added a quick $5,000 to the Archie Manning endowment. 2019 A NNUAL REP O RT

Arts and Culture Endowment for GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi in honor of Senator Willie Simmons of Cleveland The GRAMMY Museum in Cleveland has partnered with the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi to create an endowment for the Museum’s sustainability and growth. The endowment was established in honor of Mississippi State Senator Willie Simmons, District 13, to recognize his outstanding commitment, leadership, and support of the Museum. Endowments are established by nonprofits when their board and donors consciously want to build a reserve for the purpose of creating a financial bedrock for the organization. When nonprofits have an endowment, it shows the community and donors that the organization is thinking longterm and is building assets for its own future sustainability. The GRAMMY Museum opened in 2016 and has reported visitors from 50 states and 48 countries. In addition, it has provided educational programs for 25,000 local students.

Mississippi Music Foundation Endowment “If you don’t have foundations to help support musicians financially or for marketing their talent, it’s extremely hard for them,” says Peter Whitham, CEO and President of the Mississippi Music Foundation. The mission of the Mississippi Music Foundation is to provide education through seminars, internet, and conferences thus enabling individuals to become conversant with multiple genres, music technology, musical instruments and Mississippi Music. Wanda Ross understands the importance of music and how it is intrinsically tied to the state of Mississippi. So she and her son, Darren, decided to establish an endowment for the Mississippi Music Foundation – it will be a gift that gives forever!

Anyone can donate to any endowment fund at the Community Foundation, and it is a gift that will give to that organization forever! Go to www.CFNM.org 8

and Culture Marks Project The Marks Project is the definition of “cultural change!” Community leaders, through collaboration, innovation, and invention, have networked their efforts to help Quitman County become a place where its citizens can not only thrive, but enjoy a better quality of life. The mission of the Marks Project is to enable Quitman County to grow by empowering its residents with resources, education, and skills they need to thrive. “The Marks Project members are guided by a belief that education empowers,” stated Mitch Campbell, one of the founders of the Marks Project. “This group is creating sustainable partnerships with public and private entities to find solutions to community issues.” “In the spring of 2019, we launched an ambitious initiative to provide free or lowcost job training for Quitman County citizens,” said Judy Bland, co-founder of the Marks Project. “To date we have trained over 100 people! We are teaching GED, basic computer, screen-printing, basic workplace report writing, welding and forklift classes. And, soon drone training and computer coding will be offered. In addition we tutor students, facilitate financial literacy classes, conduct ATC Boot Camps, and have a JumpStart program that serves preschool children in low-income neighborhoods.” This is truly changing lives! Please visit www.marksproject.com to find out more about the Marks Project. Anyone can donate to the Marks Project Endowment by going to www.CFNM.org.

People Who Care $10 Million Challenge Completed! The Maddox Foundation knew how important it was to help the Community Foundation develop permanent charitable assets. In 2004, the Foundation President, Robin Hurdle, committed to match 100 percent of gifts made to any endowment fund up to $10 million. The final payment on that unprecedented matching grant came at the 2019 Crystal Ball! Endowments provide stability and a consistent source of income for nonprofits. Money placed in an endowment grows over time and provides an annual income for the beneficiary of the endowment. To date, the Community Foundation manages 96 endowed funds with $15,976,127 in endowed assets.

Community Foundation President Tom Pittman receives $727,162 from Robin Hurdle as the ďŹ nal payment of the Maddox Foundation $10 million matching grant.

Investment Performance Dear Friends, The equity markets are down about 30% of the time or 3 out of every 10 years on average, and 2018 was one of those years. December of 2018 was the worst December for the equity markets since 1940. The Community Foundation portfolio reflected that decline. The good news is that the equity markets are up 7 out of 10 years and have rebounded nicely in 2019. We have made up the 2018 loss and more as we ended our reporting year on August 31. Year to date through the end of August our endowment portfolio has gained 10.52 percent. The past year has reminded us that there is no straight line in market returns. Returns are messy and unpredictable in the short term, but they are not so unpredictable in the long term. That is what we have to keep in mind as we build our portfolio for not only now, but for generations to come for Northwest Mississippians. We have a well-diversified portfolio, and we are confident that it will serve us well in the years to come. Over the summer, the Center for Fiduciary Excellence re-certified The Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi for meeting the highest standards and best practices of a Fiduciary process for our investors. This is a certification that has to be earned every year, and we are proud to continue to be only one of three foundations in Mississippi to attain the status. Sincerely, Danny Williams Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair 2019 A NNUAL REP O RT

ENDOW Mississippi Strengthening Charitable Giving in Mississippi

Donors Who Took Advantage of ENDOW Mississippi’s 25% State Tax Credit • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Cindy and Charlie Gordon, DeSoto County, established a Donor Advised Fund to support the charitable causes they are passionate about. Eddie George, Tate County, established the Deborah Hector George Memorial Endowment Fund in memory of his wife. Robin Hurdle, DeSoto County, added to the Noah Costa Memorial Fund in memory of her son, Noah Costa. Mitch Campbell, Lafayette County, established a Field of Interest Fund to benefit the Marks Project. Wanda Ross, DeSoto County, established a Fund to benefit Mississippi Music Foundation. Becky Beard, DeSoto County, donated to three endowments: 1) Noah Costa Endowment; 2) Ben Flanagan Endowment, and 3) Wendy Myers Endowment. Anonymous Donor, DeSoto County, donated to the Theron Long Memorial Scholarship Endowment. Dudley Barnes, Coahoma County, established the Dudley & Claire Barnes Family Donor Advised Endowment. Bill and Mary Lee Brown, DeSoto County, gave to the Bill & Mary Lee Brown Donor Advised Endowment. Keith Fulcher, Bolivar County, and Sarah Sawyer, Marshall County, donated to the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi’s Endowment. Ann Lamar, John Hornsby, Mary Lee Brown, DeSoto County, established an endowment for the Healing Hearts Advocacy Center.

“Charlie and I have been blessed in so many ways and we believe in giving back. There are so many opportunities to serve our community and offer support to help others. We are guided by Ecclesiastes 11:1: Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days. We feel like there is always something we can do to help people.” - Cindy Gordon

Thank you to all who want to strengthen your community!

Healing Hearts Child Advocacy Center The Board of Directors of Healing Hearts Child Advocacy Center realize that endowment building is a wise decision for sustainability of a nonprofit organization; so they took advantage of ENDOW Mississippi and started an endowment for the nonprofit they are passionate about. The Healing Hearts Advocacy Center’s mission is to respond to child abuse with a supportive team approach that reduces trauma through advocacy, treatment, education and prevention. They serve DeSoto and Tate Counties. Anyone can add to this endowment and give a gift that helps children – forever! Go to www. CFNM.org/donate and mention “Healing Heart Child Advocacy Center.”

Strengthening Charitable Giving in Mississippi Your charitable giving can make an even bigger difference for your community. Endow Mississippi is a state tax credit program that encourages charitable giving that provides postitive impacts for children, families, and communities across Mississippi. The program provides a 25% state tax credit to individuals, businesses, and organizations that give to permanent endowments at qualified Community Foundations, like the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi. There are a limited number of state tax credits to share for the entire state. They have been used for 2019, but will “re-load” every January through 2023.

Gifts that Give Back

25%

State Tax Credit Savings

Minimum

Maximum

Your Gift: $1,000 State Tax Credit: $250

Your Gift: $200,000 State Tax Credit: $50,000

- No Itemization Necessary

Above is an example. Consult your financial advisor about your specific situation. If you itemize deductions on your federal charitable tax deduction, your gift will also be eligible for the federal charitable tax deduction – reducing the cost to you even more. You can deduct the remaining 75% of your gift as a charitable gift for state tax purposes.

Tax Credit vs. Tax Deduction

Tax Deductions reduce your taxable income, so the value depends on your income tax bracket. Tax Credits lower your tax bill dollar for dollar, no matter your tax bracket.

Connecting the Pieces... Leave Your Legacy

and give back to your community forever! Starting your Fund at the Community Foundation is easy! 1. Decide what issue, nonprofit, church or school you wish to support or keep flexible with a Donor Advised Fund. 2. Choose the name of your fund (for example: in memory or honor of a loved one, for a nonprofit, church or school). 3. Decide what asset(s) you wish to give (cash, stocks, life insurance, property, bequests, etc.). 4. Decide the type of Fund (i.e. Donor Advised, Designated, Field of Interest, Scholarship) 5. Decide if you want it to be a forever gift (method for disbursements). 6. Sign the Fund Agreement!

It is that easy! 315 Losher Street, Suite 100 | On the Square | Hernando, MS 38632 | 662.449.5002 www.CFNM.org | Facebook: @CFNM315 | Instagram: @cfnm2002 | Twitter: @CFNM_2002
