STAR OF HOPE 2019 – JESSE HOLLAND Our Star of Hope grew up on a farm outside Holly Springs. His love of reading took root at Tyson Drug Co. in Holly Springs. Jesse graduated in 1989 as valedictorian at Marshall County’s public H.W. Byers High School. He was recruited to the University of Mississippi with a full scholarship and then become editor of the student newspaper. Jesse went to work for the world’s largest news organization—the Associated Press and his responsibilities have included the White House, Congress and the Supreme Court. Now he covers Race and Ethnicity across America. His colleagues have recognized his leadership by electing him President of the Washington Press Club Foundation, and he has twice hosted its nationally-televised annual Congressional Dinners. Jesse has authored award-winning nonfiction books that open up the AfricanAmerican aspects of history in our nation’s capital—"The Invisibles: The Untold Story of African American Slaves in the White House” and “Black Men Built the Capitol.” His novels tell the stories behind characters in two of the biggest movies of all time: “Star Wars” and “Black Panther.” Lucas Films asked him to write the backstory for a character named Finn for the movie “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” An editor at Marvel Comics was so impressed he asked Jesse to write a novel for last year’s blockbuster film “Black Panther.” Thanks to his years of comic book reading that started in Holly Springs, Jesse already knew about the Black Panther. Jesse adapted the character to the modern era and told the story of the warrior king who defends the nation of Wakanda: “Who is the Black Panther?” The film became the nation’s top-grossing movie of 2018 and the third-highest grossing U.S. movie of all-time.

WELCOME TO THE 19TH ANNUAL CRYSTAL BALL! All the Super Heroes I know use their Powers For Good, and so does the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi as they Connect People Who Care with Causes that Matter to enhance the quality of life in our communities! As Super Heroes, we gather tonight in our finest attire to fight the problems in our communities and elevate all that is good. We are so happy you have joined us to celebrate and support your local Community Foundation, so we in turn can assist over 700 charitable causes in 11 counties. The Crystal Ball is the only event that raises funds to offset the operating expenses of the Foundation. Your tickets, sponsorships, purchases, and donations tonight will help us help other people, and we could not be more grateful for your support! We also want to thank all the community volunteers who have worked tirelessly to make this an absolutely fabulous event! None of this could be possible without their dedication - we are so thankful for their time and energy! Thank you Super Heroes for using your powers for good! Sincerely,
Emily and Patrick Johnson
