2013-14 SEASON PREVIEW The Coast Guard Academy women’s basketball team which registered ten or more wins for the first time since the 2007-08 season last year when they finished 10-15 overall return its top three scorers and welcome back junior Brittney Zimmerman, who missed all of last season with an injury. The Bears, who had won just two conference games total in the previous two years while posting a record of 2-34, were 8-10 in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play last season and earned a berth to the conference tournament for the first time since the 2009-10 season. Coast Guard returns seven players, who started 11 or more games a year ago as well as Zimmerman who started all 24 games during the 2011-12 season and averaged 10.1 points while leading the team with 71 assists, 34 three-pointers while shooting a team-high 39.1 percent from behind the arc. This is her final year of eligibility after playing two seasons at Delaware Valley College.
“Tori and Meghan both started and played great for us last season and I expect with the experience they gained last season for them to continue to produce for us again this season,” said Coast Guard head coach Alex Ivansheck, who is in her second season.

Four juniors return along with Zimmerman are back for the Bears in guards Alexi Howland and Leigh Steinbeck along with forwards Dani Knox and Jamie Waterman. Howland (3.6 ppg) appeared in all 25 games and made 11 starts last season. She will benefit my moving back to her natural position as an off guard after playing mostly point guard last season. Steinbeck (2.7 ppg.) played really well later in the season and will look to carry that momentum into this season. Knox (3.8 ppg.) played in all 25 games and made 13 starts and was third on the team with five rebounds per game. She is a steady player and one of the Bears best post defenders. Waterman (2.7 ppg./2.8 rpg.), who appeared in 22 games and made four starts, came back in great shape and has looked impressive in the preseason. Zimmerman will be the Bears point guard. She brings speed, defensive intensity and will be a spark on the floor according to coach Ivansheck. Sophomore forward Nicole Strickland, who missed all of last season, is expected to contribute in the Bears front court.

Sophomores Torie Sutherland and Meghan Fornaro are coming off outstanding freshman seasons when they were the top two scorers for the Bears. Sutherland, a swing player, led the Bears with ten points per game and was second with 5.6 rebounds per game while Fornaro was second on the team with 9.4 points per game while dishing out a team-high 45 assists, leading the team with 47 steals and knocking down a teambest 31 treys.
The only senior on the team, guard Kaitlin Ward, is a four-year starter and the only player to make all 25 starts last season. She was third on the team with eight points per game, second with 28 steals while grabbing 4.6 rebounds a game.
“We are excited to build upon last season and continue to improve,” said Ivansheck. “We have a bulk of the team back and they are familiar with what our expectations are and we as a coaching staff know what we can expect from the players. We are looking to improve our fifth place finish in the NEWMAC and advance further into the conference tournament.”

REAR ADMIRAL SANDRA L. STOSZ ACADEMY SUPERINTENDENT THIRD YEAR Rear Admiral Sandra L. Stosz assumed the duties of the 40th Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, June 3, 2011. She reported to the Academy after serving as the Director of Reserve and Leadership at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C. There she was responsible for developing policies to recruit, train and support approximately 8,100 Coast Guard Reservists.
Rear Admiral Stosz is a surface operations officer with 12 years at sea, including command of two cutters – an icebreaking tug on the Great Lakes and a medium endurance cutter that patrolled North Atlantic and Caribbean waters. She and her crews executed many of the Coast Guard’s 11 missions such as drug and alien migrant interdiction, fisheries enforcement,

search and rescue, polar and domestic icebreaking and ports and waterways security.
Between sea duty tours Rear Admiral Stosz specialized in personnel and resource management and program review. She served tours of duty as Chief of Officer Assignments and as Program Reviewer and Acquisition Funds Coordinator for Coast Guard major systems acquisitions, including the 225-foot buoy tenders and 87-foot coastal patrol boats. She broadened her experience as the Secretary of Transportation’s military assistant and years later as the Commandant’s executive assistant. She has served as Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard’s recruit training center in Cape May, New Jersey and as Director of Coast Guard Enterprise Strategic Management and Doctrine where she was responsible for aligning enterprise level strategic and management functions with the Commandant’s strategic intent.
Rear Admiral Stosz graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in Government. She was awarded a Master of Business Administration degree from Northwestern University’s J. L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management in 1994. In 2000 she completed an executive fellowship in national security through the MIT Seminar XXI program, and she earned a Master of National Security Strategy from the National War College in 2004. In 2009 she attended the Navy’s Executive Business Course at University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler business school.
Rear Admiral Stosz’s personal awards include three Legion of Merit Medals, four Meritorious Service Medals, two Coast Guard Commendation Medals and two Coast Guard Achievement Medals.

TIM FITZPATRICK DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS THIRD YEAR Tim Fitzpatrick just completed his second academic year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas. In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 21 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its first-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships. Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&MCorpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.
Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfield Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections. Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising effort that saw Army’s “A Club” donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and annual giving grow from $500,000

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 199294. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication efforts. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982. Tim is married to Kerry Marks, and they have a son, James.

While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.

COAST GUARD ACADEMY NITCHMAN TRACK & FIELD COMPLEX The Track & Field Complex was constructed in the summer of 2007 first used for the men’s and women’s soccer games that Fall. The FieldTurf surface lies on the banks of the beautiful Thames River and is also home to the men’s and women’s track & field program.
COMMANDER JOHN MERRIMAN GYM Merriman Gymnasium is home to the women’s volleyball program and the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The gym holds three basketball courts used for varsity practices and games, as well as intramural competition. The 1200-seat facility has been home to numerous league and regional championships.
ROLAND POOL Roland Pool is home to our men’s and women’s swimming and diving program. The eight-lane, 50-yard pool is also used daily for athletic training programs for our cadet-athletes, physical education courses, as well as military training programs necessary to carry out the missions of the Coast Guard for all cadets.

NITCHMAN BASEBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the Coast Guard Academy baseball team. The picturesque view from the field overlooks the Thames River.
NITCHMAN SOFTBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the softball team. The Bears have enjoyed tremendous success winning three of the last four NEWMAC tournament championships and going to the NCAA tournament four straight seasons (20092012).
CADET MEMORIAL FIELD Cadet Memorial Field was made into a FieldTurf surface in 2004 as a gift from the Class of 1952. The facility features a twostory press box that includes two coaches rooms, a room for radio broadcasting and video recording, space for media personnel, and two lounge lounge areas for additional seating. The 1500seat stadium overlooks the Thames River and the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

Coast Guard Athletics has two weight rooms, each featuring state-of-theart equipment for our cadets and cadet-athletes to use to improve their overall health and fitness. The facility in Roland Hall is dedicated to freeweight exercising while our Billard Hall facility holds our nautilus, cardio, and other guided machine equipment.

Strength and Conditioning Coach
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
Joe Crozier is in his second year as the head of the Strength and Conditioning Program with the Coast Guard Athletic Department. Crozier came to the Academy from California State University-Chico where he earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology and his masters degree in kinesiology. Joe is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach with distinction through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and Certified Personal Trainer with the American College of Sports Medicine. Joe designs and implements workout regimens for all of our varsity sport programs. Working with teams both in-season and out-of-season, Joe’s focus is to better prepare athletes for competition by concentrating on sport-specific programs designed to achieve the ultimate level of success. Coast Guard’s strength and conditioning program is dedicated to ensure each cadet-athlete is equipped with the correct instruction, knowledge and guidance to reach their peak performance level and to decrease the potential for injuries. Our program also preaches the importance of a proper, nutritionally balanced diet as well as appropriate pre-game and post-game routines to ensure safe preparation, performance, and recuperation for each contest.

ALEX IVANSHECK HEAD COACH SECOND SEASON

Alex Ivansheck is in her second season at the United States Coast Guard Academy after being named the head coach in June of 2012. In her first season led the Bears back to the NEWMAC tournament for the first time since the 2009/10 season. The ten victories posted during the 2012/13 season were the most since the 2007/08 team recorded 25 on their way to the ECAC New England Championship. Ivansheck spent the previous six seasons as an assistant coach at Ithaca College where she helped the Bombers post a 116-50 record, including a 81-11 mark in Empire 8 games. Ithaca made three NCAA playoff appearances, won four conference regular-season titles and two postseason tournament championships and recorded the league’s first 16-0 record ever in any sport during her time there. She is no stranger to Southeastern Connecticut, growing up in Salem and graduating from Norwich Free Academy in 2000. While at NFA, she played for legendary coach Bill Scarlata and won a pair of Class LL state championships while the team qualified for the ECC and state championship in each of her four seasons on the basketball team. Ivansheck was also a four-year member of the cross country team that participated in both the state and New England Championships for four consecutive seasons. Prior to arriving at Ithaca, Ivansheck spent the 2005-06 season with the women’s basketball staff at William Smith, where she helped the Herons to a second round of the NCAA playoffs. William Smith finished 22-8 and won the Liberty League’s regular-season and championship tournament titles. Ivansheck played at Ithaca from 2000 to 2005 (an injury sidelined her for all but five games of her senior season; she received a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA and played a fifth season while pursuing a master’s degree). A point guard, she helped the Bombers to a record of 109-28 during her career, with NCAA playoff berths each season. Ithaca won Empire 8 titles in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005. In her career, Ivansheck scored 567 points and pulled down 309 rebounds. Her career totals of 333 assists and 253 steals are both fourth on the program’s all-time lists (she was third in both categories after finishing her career). She received honorable mention to the Empire 8 all-star team in 2002 and 2005. She interned with the Women’s Sport Foundation as an undergraduate at Ithaca. Ivansheck earned her bachelor’s degree in sport management, with a minor in coaching, in 2004 and received a master’s degree in business administration in 2005 at Ithaca. Ivansheck will also serve as an instructor in the Academy’s Health and Physical Education program.
KEYOKAH MARS-GARRICK ASSISTANT COACH SECOND SEASON Keyokah Mars-Garrick, from nearby North Stonington, is in her second season as assistant coach at the Coast Guard Academy

She played four years for head coach Jennifer Rizzotti at the University of Hartford where the team won the 2011 America East tournament championship and the 2009-10 America East regular season championship and made two trips to the NCAA tournament. Mars-Garrick played four years at Wheeler High School where she was a two-time MVP selection. During her senior season, She was a Connecticut High School Coaches Association All-State in Class S, Hartford Courant and New Haven Register AllState Honorable Mention, Norwich Bulletin All-Area selection and ECC Small Division first team selection. She spent the month of August in Africa where she worked with young basketball players in Sierra Leone. She is a Native American from the Narragansett Tribe, who enjoys teaching her heritage to elementary school children. Her uncle Thomas Garrick played four seasons in the NBA.

CATHERINE LEWIS ASSISTANT COACH FIRST SEASON Catherine is in her first season as a member of the Bears coaching staff. She graduated from Ithaca in May with a degree in Athletic Training. She was a four-year member of the women’s basketball team which made three NCAA tournament appearances during her four years including a trip to the Sweet 16 last season. Lewis started eight games for the Bombers last season and was the women’s basketball All-Empire 8 Sportswoman of the Year honoree. She was part of three Empire 8 tournament championship teams during her days at Ithaca. Catherine, who played for current Coast Guard head coach Alex Ivansheck for three seasons at Ithaca is a 2009 graduate of Wheeler High School in North Stonington, Conn. She was a three-time All-league selection, earning first-team All-league honors during her senior season. She was a two-year captain and team MVP as both a junior and senior. Catherine was also a four-year member of the soccer team.
SHANNON NICKELS ATHLETIC TRAINER SECOND SEASON
Shannon is in her second season as an assistant athletic trainer at the Coast Guard Academy. She is originally from Florida and received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Athletic Training from the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Fla. in 2010. Following West Florida, she received a graduate student position at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. While getting her Master’s, Shannon worked with a nearby D3 college (Marietta College) and was the supervising athletic trainer for women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s indoor & outdoor track teams. Also while in school she completed a thesis titled “Validation of Physical Activity as a Functional Outcome Measure Following a Concussion”. Shannon received a Master’s Degree in Athletic Training in June of 2012. She currently resides in Rocky Hill, Conn.
