Two other top-30 runners will be back as senior Ryan O’Neil and juniors Joe O’Connell and James Martin seek to enter the elite threshold in the conference as the Bears will be looking to move well up from last year’s 4th place at NEWMACs and 15th place at NCAA Regional’s. Counted among the returning for the Bears will be senior Bradley Pienta (41st), juniors John Lash (32nd) and Zach Kearney (44th). last season, including the outdoor spring season on some high notes, according to Coach Brown, who went on to say, “the high notes could make further gains this cross country season. All the potential is here to have a strong championship season and to do that it’s going to take a lot of hard work and dedication on their part.” Returning to assist Coach Brown will be Greg Ahnrud and Mariette Ogg for their second seasons. The Bears will also welcome faculty representative Christopher Armstrong to the staff for his first season. Whichever way you slice it, the outlook for the 2013 season is very encouraging, according to Coach Brown, “Coming into this cross country season, there are a lot of returners that are looking to make an impact in the conference and the region,” which should lead to competition for spots within the team and against opponents as well. Freshmen joining the team this year include: Jacob Hardiman, Gilliam Hill, William Klein, Patrick Ledzian, James Rimmele, Caleb Teachout, and Zachary Velasquez. The Bears will open the season on Saturday, September 7 when they travel to Northampton, Mass. for the Smith College Invitational. The men’s meet is scheduled to begin at 11:45 am.

In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 21 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its first-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships. Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&MCorpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums.
