2013 SEASON PREVIEW The Coast Guard men’s soccer team is coming off its fourth Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Championship in the last 18 years. The Bears lose just one starter from their 2012 squad as optimism surrounds the 2013 season. The Bears were selected to finish fourth among the league’s eight teams, according to a preseason poll conducted by the NEWMAC’s eight men’s soccer head coaches. They received one first place vote, while perennial favorite Babson received five and MIT and Wheaton garnered one apiece. The team will be led again by 12th-year head coach Chris Parsons (Middlebury, ‘87). Parsons, the 2012 NEWMAC Coach of the Year, has amassed a record of 96-86-21 in 11 seasons at Coast Guard. That record, combined with a stops at Vassar College and Champlain College, account for a career mark of 180-144-30 in 20 years as a head coach. The Bears will face a challenging schedule once again this season. As always the Bears will face the rigors of their New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) schedule. This will include match-ups with a pair of NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago as Coast Guard will welcome Babson for a September 21st contest and travel to MIT on October 5th.
Experience will be a key for Coast Guard as the returners have a combined 332 starts between them. Last year’s team went 13-6-2, including an impressive 4-1-1 record against the alwaystough NEWMAC. Senior Joseph Bodzewski is the leading returning scorer for the Bears, after tallying five goals and an assist for 11 points as a junior.

The midfield is deep and strong this year for the Bears. Two NEWMAC All Conference players, Senior John Rendon (3 goals, 3 assists) and junior Matt Bogdan (1 goal, 6 assists) are joined by Senior Walter Heaney, junior Robert Chamberlain and Sophomore Alex Lane. In the defense, returners Junior John Tarzian (4 goals, 1 assist), Junior John Ray and Senior Kyle Grell will be difficult to break down. Senior Andrew Jaeger and sophomore Jason Kingsley will look to win the 4th spot at the back. 2012 First Team All NEWMAC selection Junior Richie Burns will return in goal for the Bears after posting impressive numbers in his sophomore season, including a 12-4-2 record, eight shutouts, and a miniscule 0.76 goals against average. Burns will be pushed by Senior Carlos Gonzalez (Stats) Leadership responsibilities for the upcoming season will be placed with senior captains John Epperly and John Rendon. Epperly, a forward from Fredericksburg, Va., has started in 32 of the 51 games in which he’s appeared, including all 20 of his appearances a season ago. Said Coach Parsons, of Epperly, “Matt has worked hard in the offseason to gain strength and will be a challenge for many opposing defenses this year. I am looking forward to watching him have the opportunity to lead as a first class cadet.” Rendon is a midfielder from West Harwich, Mass. has played in 54 career games, starting in 46 of those that he’s played. Coach Parsons states, “Jake is a returning captain for the team. His leadership and work rate set the example for the whole team to follow. He is driven to succeed!”

They will also be guaranteed two more games against NCAA Tournament teams with visits to both Albertus Magnus and Eastern Connecticut on October 8th and 22nd, respectively. There is a chance for one more game against a tournament team in the St. Joseph’s (L.I.) Tournament against the host Eagles, depending on opening-round results. The Bears will also welcome three new teams to the schedule when they play SUNYNew Paltz at the Long Island Tournament, host NEWMAC newcomer Emerson, and then they travel for a game at Nichols.
Classmate Matt Epperly has seven career goals with three coming in each of the past two seasons. Those two, as well as senior Bobby Copeland (3 goals, 1 assist) and sophomore Lukas Benedetto (1 goal) will be expected to anchor the offense.
With such a high number of players returning from last year’s squad as well as the addition of seven freshmen, competition is bound to be fierce at a number of key positions. Coast Guard will begin their season on Friday, August 30th when they host the Huskies of Southern Maine. Kickoff is set for 6:00 at the Coast Guard Academy’s Track and Field Complex.

REAR ADMIRAL SANDRA L. STOSZ ACADEMY SUPERINTENDENT THIRD YEAR Rear Admiral Sandra L. Stosz assumed the duties of the 40th Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, June 3, 2011. She reported to the Academy after serving as the Director of Reserve and Leadership at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C. There she was responsible for developing policies to recruit, train and support approximately 8,100 Coast Guard Reservists.

Rear Admiral Stosz is a surface operations officer with 12 years at sea, including command of two cutters – an icebreaking tug on the Great Lakes and a medium endurance cutter that patrolled North Atlantic and Caribbean waters. She and her crews executed many of the Coast Guard’s 11 missions such as drug and alien migrant interdiction, fisheries enforcement, search and rescue, polar and domestic icebreaking and ports and waterways security. Between sea duty tours Rear Admiral Stosz specialized in personnel and resource management and program review. She served tours of duty as Chief of Officer Assignments and as Program Reviewer and Acquisition Funds Coordinator for Coast Guard major systems acquisitions, including the 225-foot buoy tenders and 87-foot coastal patrol boats. She broadened her experience as the Secretary of Transportation’s military assistant and years later as the Commandant’s executive assistant. She has served as Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard’s recruit training center in Cape May, New Jersey and as Director of Coast Guard Enterprise Strategic Management and Doctrine where she was responsible for aligning enterprise level strategic and management functions with the Commandant’s strategic intent. Rear Admiral Stosz graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in Government. She was awarded a Master of Business Administration degree from Northwestern University’s J. L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management in 1994. In 2000 she completed an executive fellowship in national security through the MIT Seminar XXI program, and she earned a Master of National Security Strategy from the National War College in 2004. In 2009 she attended the Navy’s Executive Business Course at University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler business school. Rear Admiral Stosz’s personal awards include three Legion of Merit Medals, four Meritorious Service Medals, two Coast Guard Commendation Medals and two Coast Guard Achievement Medals.

TIM FITZPATRICK DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS THIRD YEAR Tim Fitzpatrick just completed his second academic year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas. In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 21 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its first-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships. Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&MCorpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.
Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfield Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections. Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising effort that saw Army’s “A Club” donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and annual giving grow from $500,000

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 199294. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication efforts. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982. Tim is married to Kerry Marks, and they have a son, James.

While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.

COAST GUARD ACADEMY NITCHMAN TRACK & FIELD COMPLEX The Track & Field Complex was constructed in the summer of 2007 first used for the men’s and women’s soccer games that Fall. The FieldTurf surface lies on the banks of the beautiful Thames River and is also home to the men’s and women’s track & field program.
COMMANDER JOHN MERRIMAN GYM Merriman Gymnasium is home to the women’s volleyball program and the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The gym holds three basketball courts used for varsity practices and games, as well as intramural competition. The 1200-seat facility has been home to numerous league and regional championships.
ROLAND POOL Roland Pool is home to our men’s and women’s swimming and diving program. The eight-lane, 50-yard pool is also used daily for athletic training programs for our cadet-athletes, physical education courses, as well as military training programs necessary to carry out the missions of the Coast Guard for all cadets.

NITCHMAN BASEBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the Coast Guard Academy baseball team. The picturesque view from the field overlooks the Thames River.
NITCHMAN SOFTBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the softball team. The Bears have enjoyed tremendous success winning three of the last four NEWMAC tournament championships and going to the NCAA tournament four straight seasons (20092012).
CADET MEMORIAL FIELD Cadet Memorial Field was made into a FieldTurf surface in 2004 as a gift from the Class of 1952. The facility features a twostory press box that includes two coaches rooms, a room for radio broadcasting and video recording, space for media personnel, and two lounge lounge areas for additional seating. The 1500seat stadium overlooks the Thames River and the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

Coast Guard Athletics has two weight rooms, each featuring state-of-theart equipment for our cadets and cadet-athletes to use to improve their overall health and fitness. The facility in Roland Hall is dedicated to freeweight exercising while our Billard Hall facility holds our nautilus, cardio, and other guided machine equipment.

Strength and Conditioning Coach
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
Joe Crozier is in his second year as the head of the Strength and Conditioning Program with the Coast Guard Athletic Department. Crozier came to the Academy from California State University-Chico where he earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise physicology and his masters degree in kinesiology. Joe is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach with distinction through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and Certified Personal Trainer with the American College of Sports Medicine. Joe designs and implements workout regimens for all of our varsity sport programs. Working with teams both in-season and out-of-season, Joe’s focus is to better prepare athletes for competition by concentrating on sport-specific programs designed to achieve the ultimate level of success. Coast Guard’s strength and conditioning program is dedicated to ensure each cadet-athlete is equipped with the correct instruction, knowledge and guidance to reach their peak performance level and to decrease the potential for injuries. Our program also preaches the importance of a proper, nutritionally balanced diet as well as appropriate pre-game and post-game routines to ensure safe preparation, performance, and recuperation for each contest.

Chris begins his 12th season as head soccer coach at Coast Guard. Parsons has an 11-year record of 96-86-23 and has led the Bears to postseason play in six of his 11 seasons (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008), including the ECAC Division III New England Championship in 2008 and again last season when the team finished 13-6-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Prior to 2003, Coast Guard had not played in the postseason since 1998. He was named NEWMAC Coach of the Year in 2007 and again last season. Parsons, who has 136 collegiate wins, was the head coach at Vassar College for five years (1997-2001) where he compiled a 40-37-5 record including back-to-back ECAC Tournament berths in 1997 and 1998 and a berth to the NCAA Tournament in 1999. Prior to Vassar, Parsons was the head coach at Champlain College, a junior college in Vermont from 1993-1996. His team won the 1996 NJCAA Region III Championship. In 1995, he was named the NJCAA Region III Coach of the Year as his team was the Region III runners-up. He had a four-year record of 44-20-4 at Champlain College. Chris was an NSCAA first-team All-America at Middlebury College where he earned a degree in Economics. He earned a Master’s Degree in Sports Management at UMass in 1990. Parsons holds NSCAA Advanced National, National and Professional Diplomas.
PATRICK MCCARNEY ASSISTANT COACH FOURTH SEASON Patrick McCarney begins his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Bears. McCarney is a 1993 graduate of the University of Vermont and has lived in Connecticut since 1995. For the past four years, Patrick has been an assistant coach with the Southeastern Soccer Club working with the U-17s, U-18s, and U-23 squads. The U-23 team won the State Open in the summer of 2010.

Prior to that, he was the head coach at Stonington High School for eight years during which the team won three ECC Medium Division titles and went 74-56-9. He is a social studies teacher at Stonington High School and lives in Pawcatuck with his wife, Kate, and his two children, Bailey and Jackson.

ANTHONY OCCHIALINI ASSISTANT COACH - GOALKEEPERS FIRST SEASON Anthony Occhialini is in his first season at the United States Coast Guard fulfilling the role of goalkeeper coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams. Occhialini is a 2009 graduate of Montville High School and 2013 graduate of Central Connecticut State University. He was a three-time All-Eastern Connecticut Conference (ECC) selection, a two-time All-State selection and a 2008 All-American in high school for the Indians. He was named the MVP of the National High School Soccer All-Star Game. Anthony earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at Central Connecticut where he was a member of the Northeast Conference (NEC) Academic honor roll all four years. The Blue Devils won the NEC regular season championship in 2011. Prior to arriving at the Academy, he worked at UK International Soccer Camps coaching goalkeeper skills and strategies to children ages 8 to 14.
KEVIN COLASURDO ATHLETIC TRAINER SECOND SEASON Kevin is currently in his second year as an assistant athletic trainer at Coast Guard Academy. Colasurdo comes to the Coast Guard Academy after spending three years at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital serving as an athletic trainer for local high schools and working in the area of therapeutic fitness for the New London Fire Department and L&M Outpatient Care. Prior to L&M, Kevin spent two years as an assistant athletic trainer at Southern New Hampshire University, working primarily with the Men’s soccer, basketball, and lacrosse teams.
Colasurdo is a licensed athletic trainer in Connecticut while holding his BOC certificate. He also holds certification as a National Academy of Sports Medicine Performance Enhancement Specialist (NASM-PES) and Functional Movement Screening (FMS).
