2013 SEASON PREVIEW The Coast Guard women’s cross country team, under the direction of second-year head coach Ethan Brown seek to make an impact in both the conference and the region. After finishing fifth a season ago at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Championship, the Bears believe that they are on the upswing. Coast Guard returns four of their top seven scorers from the 2012 NEWMAC championship meet, including senior Meghan Kalinowski and junior Beth Gollin. The Bears will look to improve on last year’s 5th Place NEWMAC and 17th Place NCAA Regional finishes. Also returning will be juniors Kendall Auth and sophomore Melissa Keeley, both of whom finished within 26 seconds of one another while serving as scorers in the top sixty spots. In addition to returning four scorers from last year’s team, the Bears will also welcome back sophomore Jessica Mulroy who ran the course in under 21:30. The returning group should blend nicely with the incoming class. “There are several strong runners in the freshman class that will compete for a scoring position on our team and could be contenders during post-season,” says Coach Brown. Other returners for Coast Guard will be senior

Chelsea Sheehy, junior Cameo Ulbricht, and sophomores Samantha Corcoran and Tara Larkin. Returning to assist Coach Brown will be Greg Ahnrud and Mariette Ogg for their second seasons. The Bears will also welcome faculty representative Christopher Armstrong to the staff for his first season. All in all, the outlook for the 2013 season is very encouraging, according to Coach Brown, “this year could really be a wildcard year for our women’s team. Four of our top seven runners from the 2012 season are returning and all have the potential to move up in the conference.” Some freshmen that could make an immediate impact in the Bear’s top 7 include Gretchen Krause, Bonny Turnage, Jennifer Haley, and Chloe Benoist. Other newcomers in what is a very strong freshmen class are Claira Dahill-Baue and Kyndall Percival. The blend of newcomers and returners has Coach Brown anxious to get the season underway, saying “I’m excited to watch everyone’s development through the season.” The Bears will open the season on Saturday, September 7 when they travel to Northampton, Mass. for the Smith College Invitational. The women’s meet is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am.

TIM FITZPATRICK DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS THIRD YEAR Tim Fitzpatrick just completed his second academic year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas. In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 21 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its first-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships. Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&MCorpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.

Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfield Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections. Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy.
