THE U.S. COAST GUARD AND ITS ACADEMY The Coast Guard is the United States’ oldest continuous seagoing military service, founded in 1790 by Alexander Hamilton. In wartime, the Coast Guard functions as a specialized part of the Navy, in peacetime, it performs essential humanitarian missions vital to the safety of lives at sea and the environment. Under the auspices of the Department of Homeland Security, the Coast Guard establishes and coordinates search and rescue operations by ships and planes, maintains advanced electronic and other aids to navigation around the globe, operates ice-breakers for polar expeditions and keeping domestic waterways open, enforces marine laws and Merchant Marine safety, and maintains military readiness to fulfill its naval wartime commitment. What is known today as the Coast Guard Academy began in 1876 as the Revenue Cutter School of Instruction. The original class of nine Cadets began its training on the Schooner DOBBIN, which operated out of New Bedford, Massachusetts. In 1878, the 106-foot barque CHASE replaced the DOBBIN as the Cadettraining vessel. It wasn’t until 1900 that the CHASE found a permanent homeport at Arundel Cove, Maryland, where classroom instruction was added to shipboard training. After nearly 30 years of service, the CHASE was retired in 1907 and replaced by the cutter ITASCA. In 1910 the Academy moved to Fort Trumbull, an Army coastal defense installation in New London. Like other colleges, the Academy strives to make each graduate a well-informed, contributing member of society, fully prepared to accept life’s responsibilities. But that’s just the beginning. Each Academy graduate must be a qualified officer, capable of leadership. For this reason, the program at the Academy is more rigorous and more demanding than non-military colleges to meet the professional needs of the Coast Guard. The educational philosophy of the Academy has three basic objectives: to provide by precept and example an environment which encourages a high
sense of honor, loyalty, and obedience, to provide a sound undergraduate education in a field of interest to the Coast Guard; and to provide training which enables duties as junior officers aboard ship. With these three principles serving as guidelines, the Academy staff has evolved the present curriculum, which leads to a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission as Ensign in the United States Coast Guard. The curriculum is constantly being reviewed and updated to stay abreast of the modern trends in education and the needs of the Coast Guard. Athletic competition is a part of every Cadet’s life at the Academy. Physical strength, endurance, agility, and competitive spirit are considered just as important as academic study and military training for future Coast Guard officers. In fact, every Cadet must play on an intercollegiate or on an intramural team, depending on ability and preference. The smallest of the four military academies (current enrollment is approximately 1,000), the Academy fields varsity teams in twenty-three sports. Men’s sports are baseball, basketball, crew, cross country. football, soccer, swimming, tennis, indoor track, outdoor track, and wrestling. Women’s teams include basketball, crew, cross country, indoor track, outdoor track, soccer, softball, swimming and volleyball. Pistol, rifle, and sailing are co-ed sports. Admission to the Academy is open to U.S. citizens of good, moral character who are at least seventeen years of age but not twenty-two years of age, and who are unmarried. Prospective cadets should be good students, physically fit, and medically qualified. Interested high school juniors should initiate and application at the end of their junior year or as soon thereafter as possible. The deadline for applications is February 1st of every year before attending. Admission to the Academy is based solely on nationwide competition, and not by Congressional appointment. Details concerning admissions procedures and how to apply may be obtained from the Director of Admissions, U. S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, CT 06320-4195.

THE SUPERINTENDENT
Dear Cadets, Alumni, and Fans, Welcome to the 2013 season of Coast Guard Academy football! We are excited to kick off another season of intense competition following the Bears winning season last year. Your first of five opportunities to see the Bears play on Cadet Memorial Field will be when they face Virginia’s Hampden-Sydney on September 21st. This game will be exceptionally special as we’ll be honoring the Class of ’63 football team; the only undefeated and untied football team in a regular season at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. We enjoyed tremendous success in Athletics last year as our men’s soccer team won the ECAC Championship while our baseball program reached the ECAC Championship game for the first time in program history. Our numerous cadet athletes were recognized with All Conference, All-Region, and All-America honors for their exemplary performance in the athletic arena. Bravo Zulu! I hope you will join me all season long in cheering on our cadet-athletes as they strive for success, both on the field and off.
GO BEARS!

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS TIM FITZPATRICK Tim Fitzpatrick just completed second year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas. In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 21 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its first-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships. Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%. While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women's basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU's external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications. Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfield Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections.
Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising effort that saw Army's “A Club” donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and annual giving grow from $500,000 to $1.8 million. He also cultivated the Army Sports Network from two radio stations to 18, including 50,000-watt ESPN 1050 in New York City. During his tenure at West Point, corporate sponsorship revenue jumped from $250,000 to $920,000 annually. He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick's work at Charlotte resulted in a 26percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men's basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT's transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men's basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league's national and local television syndication efforts. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor's degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master's degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982. Tim is married to Kerry Marks, and they have a son, James.

NCAA Division III Playoffs--November 23, 1996 COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY 17, COAST GUARD 16 + = /4 - : 5 = 4 9. /6 4 0 Coast Guard’s season ended in dramatic fashion as the Bears scored with 1:17 left on a one-yard run by James Jones on fourth-and-one to pull within 17-16. The celebration was short lived however as the extra point sailed wide right. The Lions struck first on a 30-yard field goal by Dan Sperco and then Jaime Cropper (18 carries, 131 yards) ended the first half scoring on a 55-yard run to give the Lions a 10-0 halftime lead. Coast Guard climbed back into the game when Al Thompson (3 catches, 68 yards) ignited the Bears with 57- yard touchdown reception from Dan Warren. The Bears defense controlled the second half shutting down the option that proved to be so successful in the first half. Coast Guard tied the game 10-10 on a Steve Deveau 24-yard field goal with 12:47 left in the 4th quarter, but three minutes later, College of New Jersey quarterback Pete Harteveld capped off a five play drive with a one-yard run to give the College of New Jersey a 17-10 lead. can a college make you a hero? ours does. Every one of our cadets is on a humanitarian mission. It’s backed by a tuition-free, four-year Bachelor of Science degree program, a salary while enrolled, and guaranteed employment upon graduation. And it culminates every class year with hands-on experiences, saving lives, protecting our nation’s maritime borders and the environment. What you learn here saves people everywhere. It’s why the U.S. Coast Guard Academy is like no other college in the nation.
