2014 ONLINE GUIDE

2014 SEASON PREVIEW Fresh off a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference semi-final a season ago the outlook is bright for the Coast Guard men’s soccer team in 2014. Despite graduating five starters from a season ago the Bears return almost 60 percent of their goal scoring from last year’s club which wrapped up the season with a record 9-7-4 (3-3-1 NEWMAC). Head coach Chris Parsons, in his 13th season at the Academy, will be tasked with leading the Bears again in 2014. He will be assisted by Patrick McCarney (fifth season) and goalkeeping coach Anthony Occhialini (second season).

career goals) and Lukas Benedetto (4 career goals). Seniors Conor Regan and Tradd Lovern should also see time up top after scoring their first career goals last season The offensive efforts will be aided by a more offensive-minded midfield, especially in junior Alex Lane who should be poised for a breakout campaign after his career season was cut short in 2013. Lane will play an attacking central midfield role while being supported by seniors Trey Chamberlain and tri-captain and 2012 second team All-NEWMAC selection Matthew Bogdan.

Freshmen that could have an impact on the upcoming season for Coast Guard include back Austin Read (Takoma Park, Md.) and midfielders Ryan Dandan (Trophy Club, Texas) and Luke Telang (Providence, The Bears biggest strength in 2014 should R.I.). be their defense with the return of four starting backs and two-time first team Coast Guard will once again face a All-NEWMAC selection and tri-captain challenging non-conference schedule Richie Burns in goal. The quartet of senior featuring a number of top teams in the tri-captain John Tarzian, senior Jonathan northeast such as Johnson & Wales (Home, Ray, junior Jasen Kingsley, and sophomore Sept. 6), Merchant Marine (Home, Sept. Kyle Phillips helped Burns post the league’s 13), Connecticut College (Away, Sept. 23), best saves total (101) and goals against and Eastern Connecticut (Home, Oct. 21). average (0.93) while coming second in save All of this comes in addition to their always percentage (.849). strong NEWMAC slate. With a mix of experienced veterans and youthful talent there’s no reason to think Coast Guard can’t once again qualify for the NEWMAC post-season tournament. They should compete with every team in the conference and if all goes well the Bears will achieve their goal of playing on November 9th.

Coast Guard lost three starters up top but Coach Parsons thinks the team “could be solid offensively as the team looks for some returners with experience to step up and score more this season.” The two players who will likely be called upon, especially in the early going, are juniors Ricky Davies (3

The Bears will kick off the 2014 season on Friday, August 29th when they take on Salve Regina University at 3:30 p.m. as part of the season-opening University of Southern Maine Invitational.

SEASON PREVIEW

This group is also skilled in possession of the ball and the best two-way threat on the club may be Tarzian who scored four goals, including a game-winner in the NEWMAC Tournament, last season. The back line will also see a lift with the emergence of rising sophomores Brad McNell and Caelan Harshaw.

TIM FITZPATRICK DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS FOURTH YEAR Tim Fitzpatrick is in his fourth years as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas. In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its first-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships. Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&MCorpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.

Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfield Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections. Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising effort that saw Army’s “A Club” donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and annual giving grow from $500,000

Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 199294. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication efforts.
