2015-16 ONLINE GUIDE

2015-16 SEASON PREVIEW The Coast Guard women’s basketball team looks to improve on a season that saw them reach the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) semifinals for the first time since 2007-08 season and win 19 games for the second year in a row. Fourth year head coach Alex Ivansheck has built a strong program having winning seasons in back to back years for the first time since 2001-02 and 2002-03 years. This year’s team is led by the experienced and talented senior duo of Meghan Fornaro and Torie Sutherland. Fornaro, who was first team All-NEWMAC last season, led the team with 16.6 points, 3.3 assists, and 2.3 steals per game. Fornaro is 37 points away from becoming the seventh player to score 1,000 points in Coast Guard women’s basketball history. She is in the top ten in four statistical categories at the Coast Guard: ninth in points (963), eighth in assists (219), eighth in steals (157), and ninth in 3-pointers (107). Sutherland, who was second team All-NEWMAC for the second time in her career last season, was first in rebounds with 8.6 boards which was also fifth in the NEWMAC and second on the team in scoring with 11.5 points per game.

In the junior class, Amanda Roy returns looking to add depth at the guard position and be a valuable shooter in reserve for the Bears. Joining the team this season is Bekah Muller. Through the preseason Muller has been a force on the boards for Coast Guard and will be a strong defensive presence for the Bears this year.

Bray saw time in 22 games last season and will be another skilled shooter for the Bears. Hernandez adds depth at the guard position and will come off the bench to be an asset on defense and push the pace of the Coast Guard offense. Joining the team for her first year is sophomore Amanda Klawinski. She is a team first player who has shown a strong work ethic this preseason. Ivansheck is bringing in her largest freshman class this season with five athletes joining the program: Micaela Martinelli, Kristina Bynum, Jayla Joyner, Shelby Threlkeld, and Johanna Moolenaar. All five players will look to make an immediate impact on the court this season. The Bears open up their season finishing out the first semester on the road with early season NEWMAC games against Clark, Smith and Wheaton. The team will then travel to play in a tournament in Puerto Rico over the holiday break with games against Simpson and Gustavus Adolphus before they return to school in January for the heart of their conference schedule. “We have four team values we are stressing this season,” commented Coach Ivansheck. “Selflessness, discipline, trust, and passion, and this does not only pertain to the court. I want the players to take these values and apply them to their entire life. The team is definitely coming together around these values, and I am looking forward to this season.”

SEASON PREVIEW

“Torie and Meghan have had a lot of experience over the past three years, so we will be counting on them on the court this season,” said Ivansheck. “Between the two of them, I will look to them to create plays this season as they have played together the longest on the team. “

tied for second on the team with 5.3 rebounds per game. Gill had three double doubles last season and in the last four games of the season she scored in double figures.

The last two seasons Coast Guard has won a combined 38 games and will look to add to that success this season with a blend of veteran leadership and talented youth. The Bears open up their season on the road against Westfield State at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on November 14th at 2:00 pm.

In the sophomore class Gill Gerton, Jill Bray, and Michelle Hernandez return to the team tallying valuable minutes in their first year at the Academy. Gerton led the team in blocked shots with 32 and was

At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%. ALEX.E.IVANSHECK@USCGA.EDU

Alex Ivansheck is in her fourth season at the United States Coast Guard Academy after being named the head coach in June of 2012.
