2016-17 Men’s Season Preview Coast Guard welcomes back all but two members of last year’s successful team which saw the Bears finish 7-2 in dual meets, set ten school records and placed third at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship. The strength of the program derives from a group of swimmers who broke seven individual and three relay records, all the of the individual records were broken by freshmen. Sophomore Taylor Rowe will hope to return to NCAA All-America Honorable Mention form in the distance events. He closed out his first collegiate season by placing 16th in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 15:58.353 at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships to earn honorable mention All-America honors. He also placed 29th in the 500 freestyle on with a time of 4:37.24 and he placed 27th in the 400 IM with a time of 4:14.08.

The Bears are led by a strong class of seniors who have been loyal and effective team members. The

Franco is a three-event NEWMAC finalist in middle and distance freestyle as well as a member of the 800 free relay team that broke the CGA record in 2016. Weeks is a key contributor and two event NEWMAC finalist in backstroke and IM events. His versatility in dual meets provides the Bears with a great deal of flexibility. Coast Guard hopes to enjoy a strong dual meet season with key meets against WPI, MIT and the Merchant Marine Academy. The dual meets establish the program for a strong run at the NEWMAC championship meet in February. The men were 3rd last year to WPI’s second place finish. It was only on the last day that WPI pulled ahead and remained there for the remainder of the meet. The Bears hope to finish strongly with some internal improvement, a long standing hallmark of the program, and the infusion of new talent in the class of 2020. Some key additions are Max McCall from New Jersey, John Pompay from Long Island, Owen Gibson from Idaho and the Boise YMCA, and Joe Rodriguez from Georgia.

Joining Rowe are other NCAA qualifiers, sophomore Chasse Sodemann in breaststroke, who won the NEWMAC Championship in the 100 breaststroke last season. Sophomore Dan Moreno in IM and breaststroke, sophomore Colin Fenster in IM and sophomore Patrick Jackson in backstroke and butterfly. Senior Elliot VanDeren will join Fenster as a returning NCAA qualifier in the 400 IM, and as a key leg on freestyle relays.

REAR ADMIRAL JAMES E. RENDON ACADEMY SUPERINTENDENT SECOND YEAR Rear Admiral Rendon assumed the duties of the 41st Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, June 1, 2015. He reported to the Academy after serving as Director, Joint Interagency Task Force West (JIATF West), the U.S. Pacific Command’s executive agent for planning and conducting counter-drug strategy in an area of operations covering more than 105 million square miles. Prior to this assignment, Rear Admiral Rendon served as Assistant Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy, the Superintendent’s direct representative to oversee day-to-day operations. Prior to his first Academy assignment, he served as Director of Staff to the Vice Commandant. Rear Admiral Rendon is a surface operations specialist with a diverse list of assignments over his 28 year Coast Guard officer

career. He served as Commander, Sector Northern New England in Portland Maine, as well as, Chief Response, Fifth Coast Guard District in Portsmouth, Virginia. Rear Admiral Rendon is a cutterman with afloat tours as Deck Watch Officer aboard Durable, a 210-foot cutter home-ported in Brownsville, Texas; Executive Officer aboard the Patrol Boat Ocracoke in Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, and Commanding Officer of the Surface Effect Ship Petrel in Key West, Florida. Other operational ashore assignments consist of staff advisor, Seventh Coast Guard District Intelligence and Law Enforcement Branch in Miami, Florida, Operations Officer for Group Key West, Florida, as well as Commander, Coast Guard Group Mayport in Northeast Florida. Rear Admiral Rendon served as Aide de Camp to the 20th Commandant of the Coast Guard. He also completed a Congressional Fellowship in our nation’s Capital, where he worked for the House of Representatives, Government Reform Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources, followed by a two-year assignment as Drug Policy Advisor to the Speaker of the House. Rear Admiral Rendon’s personal awards include a Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (6), Coast Guard Commendation Medal (3), Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and a variety of other unit awards and service ribbons. He is authorized to wear the Cutterman’s Insignia and the Boat Forces Operations Insignia. A 1983 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, Rear Admiral Rendon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois. He also completed study at the National War College, Class of 2005, where he earned a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy.

TIM FITZPATRICK DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS SIXTHYEAR Tim Fitzpatrick is in his sixth year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas. In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its first-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships. Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&MCorpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.

Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfield Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections. Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising effort that saw Army’s “A Club” donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and annual giving grow from $500,000

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 199294. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication efforts. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.

COAST GUARD ACADEMY NITCHMAN TRACK & FIELD COMPLEX The Track & Field Complex was constructed in the summer of 2007 first used for the men’s and women’s soccer games that Fall. The FieldTurf surface lies on the banks of the beautiful Thames River and is also home to the men’s and women’s track & field program.

COMMANDER JOHN MERRIMAN GYM Merriman Gymnasium is home to the women’s volleyball program and the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The gym holds three basketball courts used for varsity practices and games, as well as intramural competition. The 1200-seat facility has been home to numerous league and regional championships. ROLAND POOL Roland Pool is home to our men’s and women’s swimming and diving program. The eight-lane, 50-yard pool is also used daily for athletic training programs for our cadet-athletes, physical education courses, as well as military training programs necessary to carry out the missions of the Coast Guard for all cadets.

NITCHMAN BASEBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the Coast Guard Academy baseball team. The picturesque view from the field overlooks the Thames River.

NITCHMAN SOFTBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the softball team. The Bears have enjoyed tremendous success winning three of the last four NEWMAC tournament championships and going to the NCAA tournament four straight seasons (20092012).

CADET MEMORIAL FIELD Cadet Memorial Field was made into a FieldTurf surface in 2004 as a gift from the Class of 1952. The facility features a twostory press box that includes two coaches rooms, a room for radio broadcasting and video recording, space for media personnel, and two lounge lounge areas for additional seating. The 1500seat stadium overlooks the Thames River and the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

Coast Guard Athletics has two weight rooms, each featuring state-of-theart equipment for our cadets and cadet-athletes to use to improve their overall health and fitness. The facility in Roland Hall is dedicated to freeweight exercising while our Billard Hall facility holds our nautilus, cardio, and other guided machine equipment.

Shaakira Hassell

Strength and Conditioning Coach Hassell, in her second season at the Coast Guard Academy, was most recently the fitness manager at XSport Fitness in Chicago. She has a degree in Self-Designed Sports Science from Beloit College in Wisconsin where she was the class president as well as master’s degrees in Health and Physical Education from Valdosta State and Sports and Fitness Management from Troy University.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

She was the tactical strength and conditioning coach at Fort Bragg from 2013-2104 and prior to that the strength and conditioning coach at IMG Academy in Florida from 2011-2013. Hassell began her career as the strength and conditioning graduate assistant at Georgia Southern during the 2004-2005 academic year before moving onto Valdosta State as graduate assistant for two years. She then served as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Troy University from 2007-2011 before taking the position at IMG Academy. Hassell played for both the Chicago Force and the Atlanta Xplosion Women’s of the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) and her Atlanta team won the 2006 IWFL Championship. She was also a member of the US Virgin Islands Women’s National Basketball team practice squad.

JOHN WESTKOTT HEAD COACH 18TH SEASON

Coach John Westkott is in his 18th season as head coach of both the men’s and women’s swim teams. He is the first coach at the Academy to coach both men and women and in his time has had marked success. The athletes in his program have represented the Academy well, and earned conference and national accolades. In April of 2013, Westkott was inducted into the Rhode Island Aquatics Hall of Fame. In John’s time at the Academy there have been 48 different individuals achieve NCAA qualifying times, and 37 school records have been broken, most of those records broken numerous times. John has coached an NCAA champion, as well as many All-America selectees and honorable mention selectees. There have been four different swimmers selected as NEWMAC athletes of the year since 1999, and two of those were multiple year recipients of that award. The Coast Guard swimmers and divers are consistently some of the best performers at the conference championship and have earned team success. John has been honored as NEWMAC Coach of the Year six times, including last season, and the men’s team has won six conference championship (1999, 2001, 2004 and 2006-2008). Seven other seasons the men have been runners up at the NEWMAC meet. The women have consistently improved to being within the top four finishers in recent years. The men’s team has a pheonominal dual meet record of 131-38 for a winning percentage of .775 under Westkott. The swimmers and divers also boast success in the classroom, with numerous Scholar All-American selections for individuals and as a program. The men won the prestigious Dean’s Trophy in 2011 for highest grade point average at the Academy. There have been many swimmers and divers selected for aviation training directly from the Academy, a prized posting for commissioned ensigns. Coach Westkott states, “The goal for our program is to offer the individual a challenging environment that allows the athlete to develop in the sport, as well as a future officer and a student. The swimming and diving program has been able to have athletes show dramatic improvement and be successful within the corps of cadets.” John arrived at the Academy after finishing his Master’s Degree in Education at Springfield College, where he was an assistant coach for the swimming and diving program, and teaching fellow for the Physical Education Department. John graduated with a Bachelors of Arts from the University of Rhode Island in English and History where he swam and played water polo. After graduating, he served as an assistant coach for URI as well as the Rams Swimming Club, the local USS team.

MARY WESTKOTT ASSISTANT COACH 17TH SEASON Mary is in her 17th season as assistant coach, and her 11th as a faculty member at the Academy. As an undergraduate at Springfield College, Mary was a 4-event school record holder, and 10-time NCAA Division III All-American.

STAFF

She brings that wealth of knowledge to the deck at the Academy. Instrumental in the development of the dry-land training program and in the sprint group, Mary has developed some of the better swimmers at the Academy. Westkott also teaches Physical Education in both the cadet and the Leadership Development Center curriculums at the Academy. In the summer of 2005, Mary competed in the Ironman Lake Placid and had the third fastest time in the women’s swimming out of over 500 entrants.

KEN PANCOAST DIVING COACH THIRD SEASON Ken is in his third season as the Bears diving coach. He is a 2013 graduate of Springfield College, with a degree in Movement and Sports Studies - Physical Education, where he an honorable mention All-American and two-time New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Diver of the Year. Ken won the both the 1-meter and 3-meter board at the NEWMAC Championship in 2012 and 2013 and placed 11th on the 3-meter board in 2012 at the NCAA Division III Championships to earn honorable mention All-America honors. Pancoast was the diving coach at Masuk High in Monroe, Connecticut before moving onto become diving coach at Ohio Northern and then Keene State last season.

KEN NIEDZWIECKI ATHLETIC TRAINER

Ken joined the Athletic Training staff in 2000 and was named the head athletic trainer in 2001. As the Head Athletic Trainer, Ken oversees the day to day operations of the Athletic Training Facility, and coordinates Sports Medicine Staff coverage for the NCAA varsity sports teams, HPE run Physical Fitness Exam’s (PFE’s) and Swab Summer Training Programs. Over the years, Ken worked at several high schools and sports medicine clinics in Connecticut. He spent four years a the head athletic trainer with the Connecticut Pride of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). On two separate occasions, Ken was honored as one of two athletic trainers invited to provide services for the “CBA Players Showcase Camp”. The camp allowed top CBA players the opportunity to market their basketball skills for NBA coaches and scouts in attendance. After graduating from Farmington High School in Farmington, Conn. in 1984, Ken later attended Springfield College in Massachusetts. While at Springfield, Ken was the team student athletic trainer. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Athletic Training in 1991, Ken worked full-time as an employee of Valley Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine, in East Hampton, CT., providing clinical rehabilitation and sports medicine services at East Hampton High School and other local schools.

JACKLYN KOKOMOOR JUNIOR - FREESTYLE NOANK, CONNECTICUT

Jacklyn was part of the Bears 200 freestyle relay team which took third (1:37.63) and the 400 freestyle relay team which took sixth at the NEWMAC Championships in 2015 with a time of 3:33.92. She is a Civil Engineering major. She was also part of a pair of school record breaking relays; the 400 Medley Relay (3:58.01) which finished fifth at and the 200 Medley Relay (1:49.30) which placed sixth at the NEWMAC Championship. ADDY RUTKOSKE SOPHOMORE - BREASTSTROKE/FREESTYLE BEACON, NEW YORK Addy was part of the school record breaking 200 Medley Relay (1:49.30) which placed sixth and the 400 Medley Relay (3:58.01) which was fifth at the NEWMAC Championships last season. She was also part of the 400 Freestyle Relay which placed fifth (3:32.79) and Addy was eighth in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.63) at the NEWMAC Championships. He placed second at the NEWMAC Championship in both the 1,650 freestyle (15:48.11) as well as the 500 freestyle (4:34.34). He also set the school record in the 1,000 freestyle (9:30.12) during the year. Taylor is a Mechanical Engineering major.
