2016-17 SEASON PREVIEW A very young Coast Guard team must replace over 53 points per game of the 77 that the team averaged as the Bears posted ten of more wins last season for the first time in five years finishing 10-14 overall and 4-10 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Coast Guard, which was picked sixth in the NEWMAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, will once again play up tempo and push the ball. The Bears were second in the NEWMAC in scoring (77 ppg.) while also leading the conference in both rebounding (43.2 per game) and offensive rebounds (13 per game) a year ago. Last year, the Bears had three of the top 16 scorers in the conference and three of the top 14 rebounders in the NEWMAC. Junior Micah Baldez and senior Adrian Chuquillangui will serve as captains and return in the backcourt, the only two players on the roster, who have made a collegiate start as the Bears return just five players from last year’s team and add eight freshmen into the mix. Baldez started all 24 games last season and averaged 11.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and a team-high 3.3 assists per game. Chuquillangui made 14 starts averaging 6.4 percent from 3-point range, which was third best in the NEWMAC and he was second on the team with 36 treys on the season. Sophomore Bryce Schroeder (3.0 ppg.) and Luke Daniels both also return in the Bears backcourt. The return of sophomore Nolan Benson, who missed the final 14 games with an injury last season will be a
year and is the only returner in the front court this season. He scored in double figures twice in the ten games he played in. The Bears add eight freshmen to the roster, a group that head coach Kevin Jaskiewicz, who enters his 8th season is excited about. “The freshmen are skilled and athletic and will all play a different role at some point this season for us and we are excited with the versatile skill package that they bring to our team,” said Jaskiewicz. Four of the freshmen will see time in the Bears back court, Jason Frazer, Sean Graytok, Max Lampe and Patrick Witkowski, Noah Baldez is a swing man, who can play both in the front court and back court. Aaron Anthony, Nate Harshany and Justin Kane will see time in the front court. “Our strength will be the leadership of our returning players and the versatility of the freshmen class. This is a group that can score and create shots for others.” said Jaskiewicz. “They just need to get some experience which they did in the two scrimmages and they now have a better understanding of what it takes to try to win a college game than they did a few weeks ago.” To prepare for the challenging NEWMAC games,

REAR ADMIRAL JAMES E. RENDON ACADEMY SUPERINTENDENT SECOND YEAR
Rear Admiral Rendon assumed the duties of the 41st Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, June 1, 2015. He reported to the Academy after serving as Director, Joint Interagency Task Force West (JIATF West), the U.S. Pacific Command’s executive agent for planning and conducting counter-drug strategy in an area of operations covering more than 105 million square miles. Prior to this assignment, Rear Admiral Rendon served as Assistant Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy, the Superintendent’s direct representative to oversee day-to-day operations. Prior to his first Academy assignment, he served as Director of Staff to the Vice Commandant.

Rear Admiral Rendon is a surface operations specialist with a diverse list of assignments over his 28 year Coast Guard officer career. He served as Commander, Sector Northern New England in Portland Maine, as well as, Chief Response, Fifth Coast Guard District in Portsmouth, Virginia. Rear Admiral Rendon is a cutterman with afloat tours as Deck Watch Officer aboard Durable, a 210-foot cutter home-ported in Brownsville, Texas; Executive Officer aboard the Patrol Boat Ocracoke in Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, and Commanding Officer of the Surface Effect Ship Petrel in Key West, Florida. Other operational ashore assignments consist of staff advisor, Seventh Coast Guard District Intelligence and Law Enforcement Branch in Miami, Florida, Operations Officer for Group Key West, Florida, as well as Commander, Coast Guard Group Mayport in Northeast Florida. Rear Admiral Rendon served as Aide de Camp to the 20th Commandant of the Coast Guard. He also completed a Congressional Fellowship in our nation’s Capital, where he worked for the House of Representatives, Government Reform Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources, followed by a two-year assignment as Drug Policy Advisor to the Speaker of the House. Rear Admiral Rendon’s personal awards include a Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (6), Coast Guard Commendation Medal (3), Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and a variety of other unit awards and service ribbons. He is authorized to wear the Cutterman’s Insignia and the Boat Forces Operations Insignia. A 1983 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, Rear Admiral Rendon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois. He also completed study at the National War College, Class of 2005, where he earned a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy.

TIM FITZPATRICK DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS SIXTH YEAR Tim Fitzpatrick is in his sixth year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas.
programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.
In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, he oversaw a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization, the CGA Bear Club, as an annual giving entity to fund athletics “margin of excellence” projects and initiatives.
Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfield Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections.
Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department now conducts an annual women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium), which features prominent national leaders in women’s athletics for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England.
Prior to the Academy Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for two years prior, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%. While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation during the 1998-99 academic year. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.

He has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships, established a Faculty Affiliate program, began the annual Celebrate New London football game initiative and was the driving force in the men’s basketball teams appearance in the Armed Forces Classic on ESPNU last season.
Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy.
COAST GUARD ACADEMY NITCHMAN TRACK & FIELD COMPLEX The Track & Field Complex was constructed in the summer of 2007 first used for the men’s and women’s soccer games that Fall. The FieldTurf surface lies on the banks of the beautiful Thames River and is also home to the men’s and women’s track & field program.
COMMANDER JOHN MERRIMAN GYM Merriman Gymnasium is home to the women’s volleyball program and the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The gym holds three basketball courts used for varsity practices and games, as well as intramural competition. The 1200-seat facility has been home to numerous league and regional championships. ROLAND POOL Roland Pool is home to our men’s and women’s swimming and diving program. The eight-lane, 50-yard pool is also used daily for athletic training programs for our cadet-athletes, physical education courses, as well as military training programs necessary to carry out the missions of the Coast Guard for all cadets.

NITCHMAN BASEBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the Coast Guard Academy baseball team. The picturesque view from the field overlooks the Thames River.
NITCHMAN SOFTBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the softball team. The Bears have enjoyed tremendous success winning three of the last four NEWMAC tournament championships and going to the NCAA tournament four straight seasons (20092012).
CADET MEMORIAL FIELD Cadet Memorial Field was made into a FieldTurf surface in 2004 as a gift from the Class of 1952. The facility features a twostory press box that includes two coaches rooms, a room for radio broadcasting and video recording, space for media personnel, and two lounge lounge areas for additional seating. The 1500seat stadium overlooks the Thames River and the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

Coast Guard Athletics has two weight rooms, each featuring state-of-theart equipment for our cadets and cadet-athletes to use to improve their overall health and fitness. The facility in Roland Hall is dedicated to freeweight exercising while our Billard Hall facility holds our nautilus, cardio, and other guided machine equipment.
Shaakira Hassell
Strength and Conditioning Coach Hassell, in her second season at the Coast Guard Academy, was most recently the fitness manager at XSport Fitness in Chicago. She has a degree in Self-Designed Sports Science from Beloit College in Wisconsin where she was the class president as well as master’s degrees in Health and Physical Education from Valdosta State and Sports and Fitness Management from Troy University.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
She was the tactical strength and conditioning coach at Fort Bragg from 2013-2104 and prior to that the strength and conditioning coach at IMG Academy in Florida from 2011-2013. Hassell began her career as the strength and conditioning graduate assistant at Georgia Southern during the 2004-2005 academic year before moving onto Valdosta State as graduate assistant for two years. She then served as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Troy University from 2007-2011 before taking the position at IMG Academy. Hassell played for both the Chicago Force and the Atlanta Xplosion Women’s of the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) and her Atlanta team won the 2006 IWFL Championship. She was also a member of the US Virgin Islands Women’s National Basketball team

KEVIN JASKIEWICZ HEAD COACH EIGHTHSEASON

Coach Jaskiewicz begins his eighth year as head coach at the Coast Guard Academy after serving as an assistant coach for three years with the Bears. Kevin brings a wealth of experience to the position. He has coached at every level of college basketball, from junior college to Division I, and has been an integral part of some remarkable rebuilding programs. While an assistant at Connecticut College, he helped to recruit and to develop players who went on to earn All New England and All-American honors. In addition, he helped turn the program into a perennial winner. In fact, in his last four years as an assistant, the program was 85-20 and made consecutive trips to the Sweet 16 and an appearance at the Final Four in 1999. In the 1998-99 campaign, the team completed a perfect regular season (24-0) and was ranked number 1 in the nation. In 1999, Coach Jaskiewicz moved to Brown University, and helped coordinate a national recruiting effort that resulted in the greatest four-year period in Brown University Men’s basketball history. The program posted a 63-45 overall record from 20002004, and also produced an Ivy League record of 39-17 in that same time frame, while also producing All Ivy and academic All Ivy players. The 2002-2003 squad finished 12-2 which is the best Ivy league record in Brown history and made an appearance in the NIT. As an assistant at Coast Guard, he was part of the Coast Guard coaching staff for three seasons before becoming head coach. Coast Guard won back-to-back NEWMAC Tournament championships in 2006-’07 and 2007-’08, and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament in both those seasons. The Bears won a school-record 24 games, and advanced to the Elite 8 in 2007’08. As head coach, Jaskiewicz has continued his track record of solid recruiting and player development. In the 2010-11 season, Kevin Sowers was voted as NEWMAC Rookie of the Year and in the 2011-12 season, Greg Marshall was named to the All-NEWMAC team. His teams are recognized for their tenacity and their preparation.

Bob enters his 30th season at the Academy. He is the leader of the Bears nationwide recruiting efforts and through his direct efforts, the Bears have consistently brought in outstanding freshmen classes. Bono was an assistant coach at St. Bernard’s High for 10 years prior to coaching at the Academy, as the Saints won a pair of state titles. Bob has been a three-time selection to coach the Southeastern Connecticut entry in the Nutmeg games. His 1990 team won the gold medal. Bono and his wife of 29 years, Doreen, have four children; Mike, Rob and twin daughters Jaclyn and Lisa.
JOE CYR ASSISTANT COACH SECOND SEASON Joe is in his second season as an assistant coach with the men’s basketball team. He was an assistant coach at Plainfield High with the boy’s team before arriving at the Academy and is the head coach of the Connecticut Playmakers AAU basketball team in Groton. Cyr was a three-sport athlete at St. Bernard’s High in Uncasville as he played football, basketball and baseball for the Saints. He played basketball at both UConn-Avery Point and Eastern Connecticut State University, where he graduated in 2014 with degree in Communications. He is currently working on his Master’s in Sports Management from Lasell College in Newton, Mass.

GRANT JOHNSON ASSISTANT COACH THIRD SEASON Johnson begins his third season as a member of the Bears coaching staff. He is a 2008 graduate of the Academy and was a starting guard and captain during his junior and senior seasons in which both teams won the NEWMAC tournament and advanced to the NCAA tournament – reaching the Elite Eight his senior season for the first time in school history. Grant, originally from Grayson, Georgia, had 1,137 points during his career, which ranks him 10th all-time at Coast Guard, one of 18 players in Coast Guard history with 1,000 career points. Johnson, who holds the single-season school record with 83 three-point baskets in the 2006-’07 season, is second all-time at the Academy with 244 three-point baskets and third all time with 305 assists as he played in a school-record tying 109 career games. LT Johnson’s first tour after graduation was aboard the CGC CHASE in San Diego, CA, where he served as a Deck Watch Officer, Boarding Officer, and Gunnery Officer. His next assignment was to the Incident Management Division at Sector Jacksonville, FL. In this position he coordinated search and rescue cases, responded to maritime pollution, and lead hurricane evasion and recovery efforts along Florida’s northeast coast. LT Johnson was then selected to attend graduate school at Columbia University in New York, NY, earning a master of arts in Organizational Psychology. He currently serves as the Echo Company Officer for the Corps of Cadets, overseeing Echo Company’s professional and leadership development. Johnson and his wife Cara have two daughters, Eli and Reese.
MAURA GILLON ATHLETIC TRAINER SECOND SEASON
Maura is in her second year as an assistant athletic trainer at the Coast Guard Academy. She has been an athletic trainer for ten years. Maura came to the Academy from William J. Dean Technical High School in Holyoke, Mass. where she provided injury prevention, evaluation and rehabilitation for varsity and junior varsity athletic teams. Prior to that she was the athletic trainer at The Marvelwood School in Kent, Conn. for five years, and was also a science teacher and residential faculty member. She also spent her summers working for Gamebreaker/Warrior Lacrosse Camps.

In 2002, Maura graduated from Alfred University with B.S. in Athletic Training. Maura also earned a Master’s of Education in Kinesiology and Physical Education with an emphasis in exercise physiology. While at Maine she worked in the cardiac rehabilitation and wellness department at Eastern Maine Medical Center. Currently, she is pursuing her doctorate in sports management from the United States Sports Academy.
