2016-17 SEASON PREVIEW Coast Guard must replace NEWMAC Player of the Year Meghan Fornaro and All-conference selection Torie Sutherland, the pair combined to average over 30 points per game last season and totaled 2,623 points and a program record 64 wins in their career. The Bears, who were picked sixth in the NEWMAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, do return three starters from last year’s team which finished 16-11 overall and 11-5 in the conference advancing to the NEWMAC tournament semifinals for the second straight season. “Meghan and Torie were huge for us during their four years and they had great careers,” said Coast Guard head coach Alex Ivansheck, who enters her fifth season. “I would say they left very big shoes to fill, but honestly we are going to be a much different team so I don’t know if we are going to have anyone fill those shoes. Our identity is going to be different and we are going to look for other people to step up. We are changing things on both the offensive and defensive end, so even though we are a very young and inexperienced team we are a new team and looking to do other things.”|
Junior Jill Bray and sophomore Jayla Joyner, who both started all 27 games last season return in the back court. Bray averaged 6.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game while her 28 three-pointers

Sophomore guard Micaela Martinelli (2.4 ppg.) is the only other player returning that averaged over two points per game last season and her role will be expanded this season. She played just under ten minutes per game last season in the front court and moves to the guard spot this year. “I think moving Micaela to the backcourt will allow us to put a bigger lineup on the floor which gives us much more flexibility than we have had in previous years,” said Ivansheck. Coast Guard returns seven players and adds five freshmen to the roster for the 2016-17 season. Freshman Zoe Riis-Fallica is expected to see plenty of time in the Bears back court while classmate Sadie Simons adds depth. The trio of Audrey Bartz, Laura Irish and Breanna Wood are all expected to contribute in the front court this season. “The NEWMAC is strong again and very competitive and I think we have a very challenging non-conference schedule so hopefully that will prepare us for conference play.” The Bears open the season at Salve Regina on Nov. 15th, open NEWMAC play on Nov. 30th at home against Smith. The team will travel to DePauw University in Indiana to compete in the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Classic on Dec. 29th and 31st.

REAR ADMIRAL JAMES E. RENDON ACADEMY SUPERINTENDENT SECOND YEAR Rear Admiral Rendon assumed the duties of the 41st Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, June 1, 2015. He reported to the Academy after serving as Director, Joint Interagency Task Force West (JIATF West), the U.S. Pacific Command’s executive agent for planning and conducting counter-drug strategy in an area of operations covering more than 105 million square miles. Prior to this assignment, Rear Admiral Rendon served as Assistant Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy, the Superintendent’s direct representative to oversee day-to-day operations. Prior to his first Academy assignment, he served as Director of Staff to the Vice Commandant. Rear Admiral Rendon is a surface operations specialist with a diverse list of assignments over his 28 year Coast Guard officer

career. He served as Commander, Sector Northern New England in Portland Maine, as well as, Chief Response, Fifth Coast Guard District in Portsmouth, Virginia. Rear Admiral Rendon is a cutterman with afloat tours as Deck Watch Officer aboard Durable, a 210-foot cutter home-ported in Brownsville, Texas; Executive Officer aboard the Patrol Boat Ocracoke in Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, and Commanding Officer of the Surface Effect Ship Petrel in Key West, Florida. Other operational ashore assignments consist of staff advisor, Seventh Coast Guard District Intelligence and Law Enforcement Branch in Miami, Florida, Operations Officer for Group Key West, Florida, as well as Commander, Coast Guard Group Mayport in Northeast Florida. Rear Admiral Rendon served as Aide de Camp to the 20th Commandant of the Coast Guard. He also completed a Congressional Fellowship in our nation’s Capital, where he worked for the House of Representatives, Government Reform Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources, followed by a two-year assignment as Drug Policy Advisor to the Speaker of the House. Rear Admiral Rendon’s personal awards include a Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (6), Coast Guard Commendation Medal (3), Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and a variety of other unit awards and service ribbons. He is authorized to wear the Cutterman’s Insignia and the Boat Forces Operations Insignia. A 1983 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, Rear Admiral Rendon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois. He also completed study at the National War College, Class of 2005, where he earned a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy.

TIM FITZPATRICK DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS SIXTH YEAR Tim Fitzpatrick is in his sixth year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas.
programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.
In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, he oversaw a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization, the CGA Bear Club, as an annual giving entity to fund athletics “margin of excellence” projects and initiatives.
Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfield Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections.
Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department now conducts an annual women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium), which features prominent national leaders in women’s athletics for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England.
Prior to the Academy Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for two years prior, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%. While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation during the 1998-99 academic year. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.

He has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships, established a Faculty Affiliate program, began the annual Celebrate New London football game initiative and was the driving force in the men’s basketball teams appearance in the Armed Forces Classic on ESPNU last season.
Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy.
COAST GUARD ACADEMY NITCHMAN TRACK & FIELD COMPLEX The Track & Field Complex was constructed in the summer of 2007 first used for the men’s and women’s soccer games that Fall. The FieldTurf surface lies on the banks of the beautiful Thames River and is also home to the men’s and women’s track & field program.
COMMANDER JOHN MERRIMAN GYM Merriman Gymnasium is home to the women’s volleyball program and the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The gym holds three basketball courts used for varsity practices and games, as well as intramural competition. The 1200-seat facility has been home to numerous league and regional championships. ROLAND POOL Roland Pool is home to our men’s and women’s swimming and diving program. The eight-lane, 50-yard pool is also used daily for athletic training programs for our cadet-athletes, physical education courses, as well as military training programs necessary to carry out the missions of the Coast Guard for all cadets.

NITCHMAN BASEBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the Coast Guard Academy baseball team. The picturesque view from the field overlooks the Thames River.
NITCHMAN SOFTBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the softball team. The Bears have enjoyed tremendous success winning three of the last four NEWMAC tournament championships and going to the NCAA tournament four straight seasons (20092012).
CADET MEMORIAL FIELD Cadet Memorial Field was made into a FieldTurf surface in 2004 as a gift from the Class of 1952. The facility features a twostory press box that includes two coaches rooms, a room for radio broadcasting and video recording, space for media personnel, and two lounge lounge areas for additional seating. The 1500seat stadium overlooks the Thames River and the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

Coast Guard Athletics has two weight rooms, each featuring state-of-theart equipment for our cadets and cadet-athletes to use to improve their overall health and fitness. The facility in Roland Hall is dedicated to freeweight exercising while our Billard Hall facility holds our nautilus, cardio, and other guided machine equipment.
Shaakira Hassell
Strength and Conditioning Coach Hassell, in her second season at the Coast Guard Academy, was most recently the fitness manager at XSport Fitness in Chicago. She has a degree in Self-Designed Sports Science from Beloit College in Wisconsin where she was the class president as well as master’s degrees in Health and Physical Education from Valdosta State and Sports and Fitness Management from Troy University.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
She was the tactical strength and conditioning coach at Fort Bragg from 2013-2104 and prior to that the strength and conditioning coach at IMG Academy in Florida from 2011-2013. Hassell began her career as the strength and conditioning graduate assistant at Georgia Southern during the 2004-2005 academic year before moving onto Valdosta State as graduate assistant for two years. She then served as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Troy University from 2007-2011 before taking the position at IMG Academy. Hassell played for both the Chicago Force and the Atlanta Xplosion Women’s of the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) and her Atlanta team won the 2006 IWFL Championship. She was also a member of the US Virgin Islands Women’s National Basketball team practice squad.

ALEX IVANSHECK HEAD COACH FIFTH SEASON

Alex Ivansheck is in her fifth season at the United States Coast Guard Academy after being named the head coach in June of 2012. In her first season led the Bears back to the NEWMAC tournament for the first time since the 2009/10 season. She increased the team’s win total in each of her first two seasons at the helm posting 10 in 2012/13 and 19 in 2013/14 and added 16 more last season. She enters this season with a career mark of 45-33. The ten victories posted during the 2012/13 season were the most since the 2007/08 team recorded 25 on their way to the ECAC New England Championship. Ivansheck spent the previous six seasons as an assistant coach at Ithaca College where she helped the Bombers post a 116-50 record, including a 81-11 mark in Empire 8 games. Ithaca made three NCAA playoff appearances, won four conference regular-season titles and two postseason tournament championships and recorded the league’s first 16-0 record ever in any sport during her time there. She is no stranger to Southeastern Connecticut, growing up in Salem and graduating from Norwich Free Academy in 2000. While at NFA, she played for legendary coach Bill Scarlata and won a pair of Class LL state championships while the team qualified for the ECC and state championship in each of her four seasons on the basketball team. Ivansheck was also a four-year member of the cross country team that participated in both the state and New England Championships for four consecutive seasons. Prior to arriving at Ithaca, Ivansheck spent the 2005-06 season with the women’s basketball staff at William Smith, where she helped the Herons to a second round of the NCAA playoffs. William Smith finished 22-8 and won the Liberty League’s regular-season and championship tournament titles. Ivansheck played at Ithaca from 2000 to 2005 (an injury sidelined her for all but five games of her senior season; she received a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA and played a fifth season while pursuing a master’s degree). A point guard, she helped the Bombers to a record of 109-28 during her career, with NCAA playoff berths each season. Ithaca won Empire 8 titles in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005. In her career, Ivansheck scored 567 points and pulled down 309 rebounds. Her career totals of 333 assists and 253 steals are both fourth on the program’s all-time lists (she was third in both categories after finishing her career). She received honorable mention to the Empire 8 all-star team in 2002 and 2005. She interned with the Women’s Sport Foundation as an undergraduate at Ithaca. Ivansheck earned her bachelor’s degree in sport management, with a minor in coaching, in 2004 and received a master’s degree in business administration in 2005 at Ithaca. Ivansheck will also serve as an instructor in the Academy’s Health and Physical Education program.
JESSICA FARLEY ASSISTANT COACH THIRD SEASON Jessica begins her third season as a member of the Bears coaching staff.

She was a graduate assistant at her alma mater Ithaca for the 2012-’13 season as year in which the Bombers won a schoolrecord 27 games, won a the conference championship and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Farley, who graduated with degree win Exercise Science and earned a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science from Ithaca, was a three-year starting guard for the Bombers as the team won an Empire 8 championship while current Coast Guard head coach Alex Ivansheck was an assistant coach. The Bombers had a then school-record 24 wins during her senior season while in her sophomore season, the team finished a perfect 16-0 in Empire 8 play for the first time. Farley was an honorable mention All-conference selection as a senior as she led the Bombers with 90 assists and 66 steals and finished among Ithaca’s career leaders in both categories (seventh with 246 assists and eighth with 194 steals) as well as in three-point baskets (ninth with 77).

SCOTT HAWK ASSISTANT COACH THIRD SEASON Scott begins his third season as member of the Bears coaching staff bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience from all levels of basketball. He was an assistant coach for the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun for ten seasons (2003-2012) as the team made numerous playoff appearances and won a pair of Eastern Conference Championships. Prior to coaching in the WNBA, Hawk won both a boys and girls basketball state championship as a head coach. He was head coach at Omaha Cathedral High in Nebraska from 1985-1990 winning a Class C state championship and earning Coach of the Year honors in 1986. Hawk was head girls basketball coach at Omaha Creighton Prep from 1990-2003 leading the team to a Class A state championship and earning Coach of the Year honors in 1994. Hawk was also head girls basketball coach at Bellevue West High in Nebraska from 1999-2003 where he turned a team that had never had a winning record in 22 years to a team that went 20-2 and earned a spot in the state tournament semifinals. He is a graduate of University of Nebraska Omaha with a degree in Education before earning a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology from Lesley University.
CATHERINE LEWIS ASSISTANT COACH FOURTH SEASON Catherine is in her fourth season as a member of the Bears coaching staff. She graduated from Ithaca with a degree in Athletic Training. She was a four-year member of the women’s basketball team which made three NCAA tournament appearances during her four years including a trip to the Sweet 16 in her senior season. Lewis started eight games for the Bombers her senior year and was the women’s basketball All-Empire 8 Sportswoman of the Year honoree. She was part of three Empire 8 tournament championship teams during her days at Ithaca. Catherine, who played for current Coast Guard head coach Alex Ivansheck for three seasons at Ithaca is a 2009 graduate of Wheeler High School in North Stonington, Conn. She was a three-time All-league selection, earning first-team All-league honors during her senior season. She was a two-year captain and team MVP as both a junior and senior. Catherine was also a four-year member of the soccer team.

SENIOR - GUARD - 5-6 STONINGTON, CONNECTICUT Amanda played in 11 games last seasoan and averaged two points scoring a season-high nine in a win at Mount Holyoke. 2014-15: saw action in five games and scored 19 points including a career-high 14 against Clark in the Bears 82-32 win on 2/18/15. She is a Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering major. BEFORE CGA Amanda was captain for coach Paulla Solar at Stonington High School and was also a first team All-ECC selection and scholar athlete as member of the field hockey team. Roy was amember of the National Honor Society at Stonington. Amanda’s grandfather was enlisted in the Air Force. She is the daughter of John and Chulaluk Roy. GETTING TO KNOW AMANDA Her favorite food is her mom’s fried wonton and her favorite snack food is chocolate. Amanda’s favorite TV show is That 70’s Show and her favorite movie is Love and Basketball. Roy’s favorite actor is Channing Tatum and her favorite athlete is Maya Moore. A New York Giants fan, she lists the greatest coach to ever live as John Wooden. Jill started all 27 games last season and averaged 6.5 points and 4.4 rebounds. She scored scored a career-high 15 points vs. Ithaca and grabbed a career best 12 rebounds in a win over Clark on 2/13. 2014-15: saw action in 22 games and scored 45 points. Bray scored a season high ten points in a 89-33 win against Pine Manor on 1/8/15. She also had nine points and a career best five rebounds in a 82-32 win over Clark on 2/18/15. BEFORE CGA Bray attended East Catholic where she played basketball for head coach Katie DaCosta. She was also a member of volleyball team at East Catholic. Her father Joe served in the Navy. She is the only daughter of Wendy and Joe Bray and has two older brothers, Joe and Tim. GETTING TO KNOW JILL Jill’s favorite athlete is Diana Taurasi and her favorite pro sports team is the Patriots. Her biggest pet peeve is lying and the greatest coach she believes to ever have lived is Geno Auriema. GILL GERTON JUNIOR - FORWARO - 6-0 LORTON, VIRGINIA
Gill started 24 games and averaged 9.5 points, 7.7 rebounds per game and a team-high 33 blocks last season. She had five double-doubles, scored in double figures 11 times and had a career-high 20 points twice. She is already fifth all-time at the Academy with 65 blocks. 2014-15: played in all 27 games averaging 8.3 points a game, 5.3 rebounds, and a team high 1.2 blocks per game. Gerton scored a career high 18 points and collected ten rebounds against MIT on 2/25/15. Gill recorded three double-doubles and scored in double digits 11 times last season. She is a Marine & Environmental Science Major. BEFORE CGA Gerton played basketball at Bishop Denis J. O’Connell high school for coach Aggie McCormic-Dix. She served as team captain for three years and also was a member of the volleyball team and softball team. Both of Gill’s parents attended West Point where here father Paul was a member of the water polo team and her mother Teresa was on the swimming team. Jayla started all 27 games last seaoson and averaged 3.9 points, 4.5 rebounds to go with 43 assists. She had a career-high 12 points in a win at Smith on 12/2 and grabbed a career best nine rebounds twice. Jayla had a career-high five assists in a win over Clark on 2/13. She is a Management major.
