2016-17 SEASON PREVIEW After completing their second winning season in a row for the first time in 15 years, the Bears will look to build on the recent success. Coming off a 6-5 record, Coast Guard returns 14 wrestlers from last year’s team including 10 juniors and seniors. The upperclassmen earned back to back wins over rival Merchant Marine for the first time in nine years and gained valuable experience at the prestigious National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals which featured 18 of the top 25 teams in the nation at the time. The top returner for the Bears this season is junior Chris Sullivan, who is starting the season ranked seventh in the nation at 157 pounds. Sullivan finished the season with 28 wins, 11 pins and was fourth in the region missing an opportunity to wrestle at the National Championships by one spot. He was also named Pilgrim Wrestler of the Year. Sullivan will be joined by captains Phill Azzari (197), Dan Fiorvanti (174) and Matt McAllister(141) to lead the team. Fiorvanti was sixth at the Northeast Regional and was a second team All Pilgrim League while McAllister earned a key sudden victory against Merchant Marine last season giving the Bears a 19-18 victory.
Other top returners for the Bears is senior Earl Roberts (125), senior Matt Vieira (149), sophomore Adam Wilhelm (149), and sophomore Christian Gosch (157).

Bratland also brings in a strong recruiting class of nine freshman who will benefit from a group of experienced upperclassmen leading the way this season. “The culture right now is outstanding and I credit that to the leadership and example the upper classmen have shown along with the maturity of the young guys,” added Bratland. “With the wealth of experience in the room these guys understand what it takes to compete at a high level. We have the right guys, and if they all wrestle to their potential we will be an extremely tough team.” The Bears have another challenging schedule with Roger Williams, ranked #8 in the nation, on the schedule along with the New Standard Invitational hosted by #10 York featuring #3 Ithaca, the Roger Williams Invitational and the Doug Parker Invitational hosted by regional power Springfield College, featuring #5 Stevens. “The New England Wrestling Association and the Northeast Regional is as tough as it has ever been, commented Bratland. “Development and remaining healthy throughout the season will be the key to a successful season.” Coast Guard opens their season November 9th in Gorham, Maine against the University of Southern Maine. The match will begin at 6:00.

“We have a strong group of top returners this season with all of them having spent time in the starting line-up,” said third year head coach Kevin Bratland. “We have three returning regional place winners in (Chris) Sullivan, (Mike) Palomba, and (Dan) Fiorvanti, while the other six returners have not been regional placers, they all have the ability to get on the podium.”

REAR ADMIRAL JAMES E. RENDON ACADEMY SUPERINTENDENT SECOND YEAR Rear Admiral Rendon assumed the duties of the 41st Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, June 1, 2015. He reported to the Academy after serving as Director, Joint Interagency Task Force West (JIATF West), the U.S. Pacific Command’s executive agent for planning and conducting counter-drug strategy in an area of operations covering more than 105 million square miles. Prior to this assignment, Rear Admiral Rendon served as Assistant Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy, the Superintendent’s direct representative to oversee day-to-day operations. Prior to his first Academy assignment, he served as Director of Staff to the Vice Commandant. Rear Admiral Rendon is a surface operations specialist with a diverse list of assignments over his 28 year Coast Guard officer career. He served as Commander, Sector Northern New England in Portland Maine, as well as, Chief Response, Fifth Coast

Guard District in Portsmouth, Virginia. Rear Admiral Rendon is a cutterman with afloat tours as Deck Watch Officer aboard Durable, a 210-foot cutter home-ported in Brownsville, Texas; Executive Officer aboard the Patrol Boat Ocracoke in Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, and Commanding Officer of the Surface Effect Ship Petrel in Key West, Florida. Other operational ashore assignments consist of staff advisor, Seventh Coast Guard District Intelligence and Law Enforcement Branch in Miami, Florida, Operations Officer for Group Key West, Florida, as well as Commander, Coast Guard Group Mayport in Northeast Florida. Rear Admiral Rendon served as Aide de Camp to the 20th Commandant of the Coast Guard. He also completed a Congressional Fellowship in our nation’s Capital, where he worked for the House of Representatives, Government Reform Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources, followed by a two-year assignment as Drug Policy Advisor to the Speaker of the House. Rear Admiral Rendon’s personal awards include a Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (6), Coast Guard Commendation Medal (3), Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and a variety of other unit awards and service ribbons. He is authorized to wear the Cutterman’s Insignia and the Boat Forces Operations Insignia. A 1983 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, Rear Admiral Rendon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois. He also completed study at the National War College, Class of 2005, where he earned a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy.

TIM FITZPATRICK DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS SIXTH YEAR Tim Fitzpatrick is in his sixth year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas. In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its first-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships. Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&MCorpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.
Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfield Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections. Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising effort that saw Army’s “A Club” donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and annual giving grow from $500,000

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 199294. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication efforts. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.

While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.

COAST GUARD ACADEMY NITCHMAN TRACK & FIELD COMPLEX The Track & Field Complex was constructed in the summer of 2007 first used for the men’s and women’s soccer games that Fall. The FieldTurf surface lies on the banks of the beautiful Thames River and is also home to the men’s and women’s track & field program.
COMMANDER JOHN MERRIMAN GYM Merriman Gymnasium is home to the women’s volleyball program and the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The gym holds three basketball courts used for varsity practices and games, as well as intramural competition. The 1200-seat facility has been home to numerous league and regional championships. ROLAND POOL Roland Pool is home to our men’s and women’s swimming and diving program. The eight-lane, 50-yard pool is also used daily for athletic training programs for our cadet-athletes, physical education courses, as well as military training programs necessary to carry out the missions of the Coast Guard for all cadets.

NITCHMAN BASEBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the Coast Guard Academy baseball team. The picturesque view from the field overlooks the Thames River.
NITCHMAN SOFTBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the softball team. The Bears have enjoyed tremendous success winning three of the last four NEWMAC tournament championships and going to the NCAA tournament four straight seasons (20092012).
CADET MEMORIAL FIELD Cadet Memorial Field was made into a FieldTurf surface in 2004 as a gift from the Class of 1952. The facility features a twostory press box that includes two coaches rooms, a room for radio broadcasting and video recording, space for media personnel, and two lounge lounge areas for additional seating. The 1500seat stadium overlooks the Thames River and the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

BILLARD HALL BILLARD HALL Named after Rear Admiral Frederick C. Billard, Superintendent of the Cutter School of Instruction from 1914-1918. Credited as the founder of the modern Coast Guard Academy, Billard moved the Academy from Fort Trumbull to its current location in 1932 and expanded the curriculum to four years. Billard established the school’s motto, Scientiae Cedit Mare (The Sea Yields to Knowledge) in 1920, was an outstanding proponent of competitive sports. Built in 1932, Billard Hall was used as an athletics facility before Roland Hall was built, and today is still used for athletic training for both the Leadership Development Center and the Cadet Corps. The Billard Gym is used for Wrestling meets and has a Cardio Room, Fitness Room, and Weight Training Room that were renovated and dedicated in February of 2009.

Coast Guard Athletics has two weight rooms, each featuring state-of-theart equipment for our cadets and cadet-athletes to use to improve their overall health and fitness. The facility in Roland Hall is dedicated to freeweight exercising while our Billard Hall facility holds our nautilus, cardio, and other guided machine equipment.
Shaakira Hassell
Strength and Conditioning Coach Hassell, in her second season at the Coast Guard Academy, was most recently the fitness manager at XSport Fitness in Chicago. She has a degree in Self-Designed Sports Science from Beloit College in Wisconsin where she was the class president as well as master’s degrees in Health and Physical Education from Valdosta State and Sports and Fitness Management from Troy University.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
She was the tactical strength and conditioning coach at Fort Bragg from 2013-2104 and prior to that the strength and conditioning coach at IMG Academy in Florida from 2011-2013. Hassell began her career as the strength and conditioning graduate assistant at Georgia Southern during the 2004-2005 academic year before moving onto Valdosta State as graduate assistant for two years. She then served as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Troy University from 2007-2011 before taking the position at IMG Academy. Hassell played for both the Chicago Force and the Atlanta Xplosion Women’s of the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) and her Atlanta team won the 2006 IWFL Championship. She was also a member of the US Virgin Islands Women’s National Basketball team practice squad.

Kevin Bratland enters his third season as head coach of the Coast Guard wrestling program. In his second season, the Bears went 6-5 and earned their second winning season in a row in over 15 years and also scored back to back wins over rival Merchant Marine for the first time in nine years. He had an outstanding first season leading the Bears to a dual meet record of 13-6, their first winning season in 14 years. Coast Guard also beat rival Merchant Marine for the first time since 2007. Bratland was named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Coach of the Year in 2014 as he sent a pair of wrestlers to the NCAA Division III Championships and Nate Giorgio earned All-America honors for third time in his career with a fifth place finish at 133 pounds. Giorgio won the Northeast Region Championship and finished 41-2 on the season. Bratland was the head coach at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois for the past eight seasons. He led the Cardinals to a 73-47-1 dual-meet record and three College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championships while also being named conference Coach of the Year three times. His teams finished in top 10 at the NCAA Division III Championships three times. In his first season in 2006-’07, Bratland led the Cardinals to a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships, the highest finish in school history. Four wrestlers qualified for nationals and two were All-Americans. North Central sent three wrestlers to the 2008 Division III Championships, each of whom earned All-American honors in helping the Cardinals to a ninth-place finish. In 2009, North Central had two individuals qualify for national-championship competition with both earning All-America honors. The Cardinals also set a school record with 15 dual-meet victories in the 2008-2009 campaign and achieved a national ranking as high as fourth by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Four of his wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships and two earned All-America honors in the 2009-2010 season as the team posted a 12-5-1 dual-meet record. During the 2010-2011 season, three individuals qualified for the national championships with one earning All-America honors. In 2012, two athletes earned All-America honors while 2013 saw one wrestler earn All-America status. Last year Bratland had two wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships. Bratland graduated from Wartburg in 2003 with a degree in fitness management. He received his master’s degree in exercise science in 2004 from University of Northern Iowa. Bratland is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist and attained his coaching certification from Iowa Central Community College. As a collegian, Bratland was a two-time National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III All-Academic Individual and two-time NCAA III All-American. In 2002, he finished third in the nation at 157 pounds and improved his placement to second as a senior in 2003. Bratland served as Wartburg’s co-captain as a junior and senior and was the team’s most valuable wrestler those same two years. He was a member of Wartburg’s 2003 national championship team. Bratland began his wrestling career at Iowa State University in 1997 and was part of the top-ranked recruiting class in the nation along with four-time undefeated national champion and Olympic gold medalist Cael Sanderson and four-time All-American and national champion Joe Heskett. JAKE IBEY ATHLETIC TRAINER FOURTH SEASON Jake is in his fourth season as an assistant athletic trainer at the Coast Guard Academy. He has been an athletic trainer for nine years. Jake graduated from the University of New England with a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training. He then graduated with his master’s degree in Exercise Science with a concentration in Advanced Rehabilitation. Before working at the Coast Guard Academy, he worked in many different high schools all over the state of Connecticut. Jake lives in Windsor, Conn. with his wife and two children.

PHIL AZZARI SENIOR - 197 HADDEN HEIGHTS, NEW JERSEY Phil went 7-7 as a juinior with key wins against Bridgewater St. and WPI helping Coast Guard to their second winning record in as many season. Azzari has a carrer record of 41-38 with nine pins. He is Mechanical Engineering major. BEFORE CGA Captain at Hadden Heights High where he was a four-time district and region champion. Phil also was a member of both the football and soccer teams. Azzari has a younger brother Patrick .and is the son of Phil and Patty Azzari. GETTING TO KNOW PHILLIP His favorite food is ice cream while his favorite snack is peanut butter. Phillip’s favorite movie is Black Hawk Down and his favorite sports team is the Philadelphia Eagles. His favorite song is Sail by Awolnation. If he could visit any arena or stadium it would be AT&T Stadium, the home of the Dallas Cowboys.

DAN FIORVANTI SENIOR - 174 COMMACK, NEW YORK Daniel had a succesful junior season that saw him go 17-10 at 174 pounds with two pins giving him nine for his career. Firovanti was sixth at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional wrestling at 174 pounds helping the team to a top ten finish. He is a Civil Engineering major. MICHAEL PALOMBA SENIOR - 165 SOUTH RIVER, N.J. Palomba went 10-9 during his junior season recording his second most pins in a single season (4).. In his sophomore season he was second at the New Standard Corp Invitational and finished in fifth place at the NCAA Northeast Regionals. Michael had five wins by fall last season.
