2016 Season Preview Coast Guard finished 16-16 overall advancing to the semifinals of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament. The Bears return six of their top seven pitchers and seven everyday players as the team looks to build upon last season. Coast Guard started 10-2 last year, but struggled down the stretch despite a 6-1 win over Babson in the first round of the conference tournament, its first NEWMAC tournament win since 2010. “We need to finish what we started,” said head coach C.C Grant in his 10th season. “We started 10-2 and finished 16-16, but that was a big step for us to beat Babson and make it to the semifinals. It was huge for our guys who were there last year to understand what it takes to win a playoff game.” Junior Colton Cannon (3-2), who pitched a complete game scattering six singles in the tournament win last year, is back after leading the Bears with a 2.52 ERA and 50 innings pitched last season. Juniors Eric Vrissis (2-1, 5.03) and Luke Sniatkowski (3-2, 5.16) along with sophomore Cody Bain (2-1, 2.66), who worked out of the bullpen last year and led the team with four saves, will comprise the top end of the Bears rotation. “These pitchers worked every hard in the offseason and it shows,” said Grant. “We didn’t use Cody Bain enough out of the bullpen (23.3 innings total) so he will be one of our top starters this year and I’m excited because you are only as good and your pitching and defense are going to take you.”
Sniatkowski struck out a career-high eight and picked up the first complete game victory of his career, a 10-3 win over WPI a key NEWMAC win. Sophomore Joe Siciliano (2-3, 5.63) and junior Justin Rebholz (3-2, 4.87) along with plenty of freshman arms have Coach Grant excited with the pitching staff. “We have a solid group of pitchers back who have been successful for us in big league games,” said Grant. “We also have freshmen who can throw right now and have confidence on the mound, so

Sophomore Alex Murdoch, who led the Bears with a .326 batting average, will once again be the Bears starting catcher while classmate Christian Toscano, who Coach Grant says as improved as much as anyone since arriving on campus will serve as the backup. Senior Cory Sonnega (.239), who made 13 starts last season, will start at first base while freshmen Jake Behne and Mike Rosenberg will serve as the backups. Senior Kyle Wood (.253), who set the school record with 33 walks last season and led the team with a .459 on base percentage, makes the move from third base to second base to solidify the infield while senior Mark Behne (.214), who led the team with 16 stolen bases, returns at shortstop to give the Bears a solid up the middle defense. Behne, who led the team with a .324 average as a sophomore, looks to once again be among the team batting leaders. Sophomore Zach Serna (.231), who appeared in 15 games last season, takes over at third base. Senior Eddie Lazowski (.234), a left-handed hitter, will start in left field, junior Kyle Jackson (makes the move from right and will start in center while junior Timbo Duncan (.301) will start in right field and as well as backup the infield spots. Duncan, who earned second team All-conference honor last season, is the one player in the lineup that can hit the ball out of the park on a consistent basis. He tied the single-season school record with six homers while leading the team with 22 RBI’s last year. Freshman Luke Thompson will also see time in the outfield. Freshman Trey Rittenhouse will be key as a late inning defensive replacement in the outfield while freshman Will Stephens, a switch hitter and sophomore Chris Clark will be good bats off the bench for the Bears.

“I like our lineup if they continue to improve,” said Grant. “I’m happy with what we have put together as the season approaches as long as we keep working hard. Getting two games in before Florida will be a huge jump for us heading into the southern trip where we will play eight games.”

REAR ADMIRAL JAMES E. RENDON ACADEMY SUPERINTENDENT FIRST YEAR Rear Admiral Rendon assumed the duties of the 41st Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, June 1, 2015. He reported to the Academy after serving as Director, Joint Interagency Task Force West (JIATF West), the U.S. Pacific Command’s executive agent for planning and conducting counter-drug strategy in an area of operations covering more than 105 million square miles.
Prior to this assignment, Rear Admiral Rendon served as Assistant Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy, the Superintendent’s direct representative to oversee day-to-day operations. Prior to his first Academy assignment, he served as Director of Staff to the Vice Commandant.

career. He served as Commander, Sector Northern New England in Portland Maine, as well as, Chief Response, Fifth Coast Guard District in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Rear Admiral Rendon is a cutterman with afloat tours as Deck Watch Officer aboard Durable, a 210-foot cutter home-ported in Brownsville, Texas; Executive Officer aboard the Patrol Boat Ocracoke in Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, and Commanding Officer of the Surface Effect Ship Petrel in Key West, Florida. Other operational ashore assignments consist of staff advisor, Seventh Coast Guard District Intelligence and Law Enforcement Branch in Miami, Florida, Operations Officer for Group Key West, Florida, as well as Commander, Coast Guard Group Mayport in Northeast Florida.
Rear Admiral Rendon served as Aide de Camp to the 20th Commandant of the Coast Guard. He also completed a Congressional Fellowship in our nation’s Capital, where he worked for the House of Representatives, Government Reform Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources, followed by a two-year assignment as Drug Policy Advisor to the Speaker of the House.
Rear Admiral Rendon’s personal awards include a Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (6), Coast Guard Commendation Medal (3), Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and a variety of other unit awards and service ribbons. He is authorized to wear the Cutterman’s Insignia and the Boat Forces Operations Insignia.
A 1983 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, Rear Admiral Rendon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois. He also completed study at the National War College, Class of 2005, where he earned a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy.

TIM FITZPATRICK DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS FIFTH YEAR Tim Fitzpatrick is in his fifth year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas.
programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.
In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, he oversaw a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization, the CGA Bear Club, as an annual giving entity to fund athletics “margin of excellence” projects and initiatives.
Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfield Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections.
Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department now conducts an annual women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium), which features prominent national leaders in women’s athletics for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England.
Prior to the Academy Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for two years prior, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%. While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation during the 1998-99 academic year. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.

He has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships, established a Faculty Affiliate program, began the annual Celebrate New London football game initiative and was the driving force in the men’s basketball teams appearance in the Armed Forces Classic on ESPNU last season.
Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy.
COAST GUARD ACADEMY NITCHMAN TRACK & FIELD COMPLEX The Track & Field Complex was constructed in the summer of 2007 first used for the men’s and women’s soccer games that Fall. The FieldTurf surface lies on the banks of the beautiful Thames River and is also home to the men’s and women’s track & field program.
COMMANDER JOHN MERRIMAN GYM Merriman Gymnasium is home to the women’s volleyball program and the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The gym holds three basketball courts used for varsity practices and games, as well as intramural competition. The 1200-seat facility has been home to numerous league and regional championships.
ROLAND POOL Roland Pool is home to our men’s and women’s swimming and diving program. The eight-lane, 50-yard pool is also used daily for athletic training programs for our cadet-athletes, physical education courses, as well as military training programs necessary to carry out the missions of the Coast Guard for all cadets.

NITCHMAN BASEBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the Coast Guard Academy baseball team. The picturesque view from the field overlooks the Thames River.
NITCHMAN SOFTBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the softball team. The Bears have enjoyed tremendous success winning three of the last four NEWMAC tournament championships and going to the NCAA tournament four straight seasons (20092012).
CADET MEMORIAL FIELD Cadet Memorial Field was made into a FieldTurf surface in 2004 as a gift from the Class of 1952. The facility features a twostory press box that includes two coaches rooms, a room for radio broadcasting and video recording, space for media personnel, and two lounge lounge areas for additional seating. The 1500seat stadium overlooks the Thames River and the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

Coast Guard Athletics has two weight rooms, each featuring state-of-theart equipment for our cadets and cadet-athletes to use to improve their overall health and fitness. The facility in Roland Hall is dedicated to freeweight exercising while our Billard Hall facility holds our nautilus, cardio, and other guided machine equipment.
Shaakira Hassell
Strength and Conditioning Coach Hassell, in her first season at the Coast Guard Academy, was most recently the fitness manager at XSport Fitness in Chicago. She has a degree in Self-Designed Sports Science from Beloit College in Wisconsin where she was the class president as well as master’s degrees in Health and Physical Education from Valdosta State and Sports and Fitness Management from Troy University.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
She was the tactical strength and conditioning coach at Fort Bragg from 2013-2104 and prior to that the strength and conditioning coach at IMG Academy in Florida from 2011-2013. Hassell began her career as the strength and conditioning graduate assistant at Georgia Southern during the 2004-2005 academic year before moving onto Valdosta State as graduate assistant for two years. She then served as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Troy University from 2007-2011 before taking the position at IMG Academy. Hassell played for both the Chicago Force and the Atlanta Xplosion Women’s of the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) and her Atlanta team won the 2006 IWFL Championship. She was also a member of the US Virgin Islands Women’s National Basketball team practice squad.

C.C. is in his tenth season as head baseball coach after serving as the top assistant for seven seasons. During the 2014 season he became just the third baseball coach in Coast Guard history to record 100 victories at the Academy. His 125 career wins is second most at the Academy. In 2013 he led Coast Guard to their first ever appearance in the ECAC Championship game before falling to eventual NCAA Qualifier MIT in a 2-0 pitcher’s duel. During the season the Bears set a new school record with 24 wins. He led the Bears to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament championship game in 2010 and an ECAC tournament berth as the team posted a then school-record tying 21 wins in 2011. Grant was a part of a coaching staff that led the Bears to the first postseason win in school history in 2002 and led the team to three (NEWMAC) tournament championship games (2000, 2001, 2003). Grant is also the Co-Defensive Coordinator for the football team, his 16th season as a member of the Bears football coaching staff. The 1992 graduate of Cortland State spent six seasons as an assistant football coach at his alma mater, the final two as the Offensive Coordinator. C.C. earned a Masters degree in Physical Education from Cortland State in 1994.
MIKE TURGEON ASSISTANT COACH
Mike Turgeon is in his first season as the top assistant for the baseball team. Turgeon, who coached the team in the Fall season this year will be head coach C.C. Grant’s top assistant this spring.

Turgeon was a sixth round draft choice by the Chicago Cubs in the 1977 draft. He played professional baseball for seven seasons in both the Cubs and Giants organizations playing at the AAA level his last three seasons, he was part of the 40 man roster for both the Cubs and the Giants. A graduate of St. Bernard High and Eastern Connecticut State University with a degree in Environmental Sciences, the Turgeon family had eight players play college baseball. Turgeon led the New York-Penn League in batting with a .344 average and 98 hits in 1978. He helped turn 37 double plays in the Texas League in 1979, before being moved up to Triple-A. His best year came in 1980 for Wichita when he launched 13 homers, drove in 75 runs and batted .249.

SHANNON NICKELS ATHLETIC TRAINER
Shannon is in her fourth season as an assistant athletic trainer at the Coast Guard Academy. She is originally from Florida and received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Athletic Training from the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Fla. in 2010. Following West Florida, she received a graduate student position at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. While getting her Master’s, Shannon worked with a nearby D3 college (Marietta College) and was the supervising athletic trainer for women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s indoor & outdoor track teams. Also while in school she completed a thesis titled “Validation of Physical Activity as a Functional Outcome Measure Following a Concussion”. Shannon received a Master’s Degree in Athletic Training in June of 2012.

#2 MARK BEHNE SENIOR - SHORTSTOP CLIFTON, VIRGINIA Mark started 31 games at shortstop last season and had seven multi-hit games including four of the final five games of the season.
