2016 SEASON PREVIEW The Coast Guard men’s soccer team is looking to bounce back this season after missing The New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament for the first time since the 2011 season. With 20 players returning, the Bears will look to the experience of their upperclassmen to lead the team and will also benefit from the valuable minutes the underclassmen received last season to make a return to the NEWMAC Tournament. Head coach Chris Parsons returns for his 15th season at the Academy leading the men’s soccer program. He will be assisted by Patrick McCarney, Jared Silverman, Jesse Millard, Judson Wheeler and Kevin Trujillo. Anthony Occhialini will enter his fourth year as the goalkeeper coach.

The Bears back line will be led by junior cocaptain Austin Read, who was a second team allconference selection last season. Read has started and played in every game since he has been at the Academy at the center back position and has also been proven to be a threat on the offensive end, scoring five goals and adding two assists through his first two years at the Coast Guard. “In my opinion, he (Read) is the best center back in the league, there is no question about that,” commented coach Parson on Read. “He has been named captain as a junior, which indicates how important he is within the team. For me, he is a life vest; you always know it will be a challenge for the other team to get in behind the defense and get service into the box with him at the center of the defense.”

Up top to start the season, Coast Guard will look to a blend of underclassmen and upperclassmen. Sophomore Alex Hall, who started five of the final six games of the season last year, ended the season with two goals and one assist. Senior Patrick Hanrahan has a career three goals and appeared in 17 games last season including earning his first start. Also seeing time up top will be sophomore Griffen Klages who appeared in 12 games last season.

Senior Brad McNell and sophomores Noah Harper and Greg Burnham will join Read on the defensive end of the field. McNell, who also battled injury last season, returns healthy this year and will look contribute as an aggressive outside back. Both Harper and Burnham earned valuable minutes last season combining for 22 starts. Freshmen Brock Hassett and Wilson Nichols both have had a strong preseason and will push for time in the back four.

The Bears are looking forward to the return of senior co-capatin Alex Lane who lost last season due to injury. During his junior season Lane was Coast Guard’s second leading scorer with four goals and added four assists in only 12 games played.

Coast Guard returns two goalkeepers, junior Jake Sorensen and sophomore William Bragaw, who saw the majority of the time in the net last season. Bragaw started 11 games last season making 47 saves and tallying a 1.07 goals against average while Sorensen started seven games last season making 14 saves and finishing with a 2.19 goals against average. Freshman Dakota Harich will also battle for time this season at the goalkeeper position.

“Alex (Lane) brings an intensity to the team that we did not have last season,” said coach Parsons. “It is contagious and I think that was really missing for us last season, especially in the middle of the field where we were young.”

Joining Lane and Harshaw in the midfield will be juniors Ryan Dandan and Luke Telang. Dandan led the team in assists last season with five and has scored five goals and seven assists over his career while Telang scored two goals and added one assist last season and has scored five goals and four assists during his first two years at the Academy. Also seeing time in the midfield will be sophomore Quintin Parsons along with classmate Garrett Magill who will play a holding midfielder role. Freshman Pryor Miller will also see time coming off the bench for Coast Guard.

Another player looking to have a bounce back year after an injury shortened 2015 season will be senior Caelan Harshaw. Harshaw has spent the last three seasons at outside back but was still a scoring threat especially during his sophomore season when he had three goals and four assists. He will look to bring his scoring touch and his ability to get forward to the midfield.

Just two years removed from an NCAA tournament and NEWMAC semifinal berth, the Bears are motivated to use the experience they gained last season to make a return to postseason play. The return of healthy upperclassmen combined with the minutes the underclassmen played last season will have a major impact on the 2016 season. “Our sophomore players have a year under their belt and all of them played last season,” added coach Parsons. “They are all bigger, stronger, faster and better now and I think that will be huge for us as a team. We are better team this season.” Coast Guard will once again have a rigorous NEWMAC schedule with home conference matches against MIT, Wheaton and Springfield. The Bears first game will kickoff on Friday, September 2nd against the Castleton Spartans at USM. The Bears home opener will be on Wednesday, September 7th against the Johnson & Wales Wildcats. Game will start at 6:00 pm.

REAR ADMIRAL JAMES E. RENDON ACADEMY SUPERINTENDENT SECOND YEAR Rear Admiral Rendon assumed the duties of the 41st Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, June 1, 2015. He reported to the Academy after serving as Director, Joint Interagency Task Force West (JIATF West), the U.S. Pacific Command’s executive agent for planning and conducting counter-drug strategy in an area of operations covering more than 105 million square miles. Prior to this assignment, Rear Admiral Rendon served as Assistant Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy, the Superintendent’s direct representative to oversee day-to-day operations. Prior to his first Academy assignment, he served as Director of Staff to the Vice Commandant. Rear Admiral Rendon is a surface operations specialist with a diverse list of assignments over his 28 year Coast Guard officer

career. He served as Commander, Sector Northern New England in Portland Maine, as well as, Chief Response, Fifth Coast Guard District in Portsmouth, Virginia. Rear Admiral Rendon is a cutterman with afloat tours as Deck Watch Officer aboard Durable, a 210-foot cutter home-ported in Brownsville, Texas; Executive Officer aboard the Patrol Boat Ocracoke in Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, and Commanding Officer of the Surface Effect Ship Petrel in Key West, Florida. Other operational ashore assignments consist of staff advisor, Seventh Coast Guard District Intelligence and Law Enforcement Branch in Miami, Florida, Operations Officer for Group Key West, Florida, as well as Commander, Coast Guard Group Mayport in Northeast Florida. Rear Admiral Rendon served as Aide de Camp to the 20th Commandant of the Coast Guard. He also completed a Congressional Fellowship in our nation’s Capital, where he worked for the House of Representatives, Government Reform Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources, followed by a two-year assignment as Drug Policy Advisor to the Speaker of the House. Rear Admiral Rendon’s personal awards include a Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (6), Coast Guard Commendation Medal (3), Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and a variety of other unit awards and service ribbons. He is authorized to wear the Cutterman’s Insignia and the Boat Forces Operations Insignia. A 1983 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, Rear Admiral Rendon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois. He also completed study at the National War College, Class of 2005, where he earned a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy.

TIM FITZPATRICK DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS SIXTH YEAR Tim Fitzpatrick is in his sixth year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas. In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its first-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships. Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&MCorpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.

Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfield Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections. Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising effort that saw Army’s “A Club” donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and annual giving grow from $500,000

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 199294. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication efforts. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.

While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.

COAST GUARD ACADEMY NITCHMAN TRACK & FIELD COMPLEX The Track & Field Complex was constructed in the summer of 2007 first used for the men’s and women’s soccer games that Fall. The FieldTurf surface lies on the banks of the beautiful Thames River and is also home to the men’s and women’s track & field program.

COMMANDER JOHN MERRIMAN GYM Merriman Gymnasium is home to the women’s volleyball program and the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The gym holds three basketball courts used for varsity practices and games, as well as intramural competition. The 1200-seat facility has been home to numerous league and regional championships. ROLAND POOL Roland Pool is home to our men’s and women’s swimming and diving program. The eight-lane, 50-yard pool is also used daily for athletic training programs for our cadet-athletes, physical education courses, as well as military training programs necessary to carry out the missions of the Coast Guard for all cadets.

NITCHMAN BASEBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the Coast Guard Academy baseball team. The picturesque view from the field overlooks the Thames River.

NITCHMAN SOFTBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the softball team. The Bears have enjoyed tremendous success winning three of the last four NEWMAC tournament championships and going to the NCAA tournament four straight seasons (20092012).

CADET MEMORIAL FIELD Cadet Memorial Field was made into a FieldTurf surface in 2004 as a gift from the Class of 1952. The facility features a twostory press box that includes two coaches rooms, a room for radio broadcasting and video recording, space for media personnel, and two lounge lounge areas for additional seating. The 1500seat stadium overlooks the Thames River and the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

Coast Guard Athletics has two weight rooms, each featuring state-of-theart equipment for our cadets and cadet-athletes to use to improve their overall health and fitness. The facility in Roland Hall is dedicated to freeweight exercising while our Billard Hall facility holds our nautilus, cardio, and other guided machine equipment.

Shaakira Hassell

Strength and Conditioning Coach Hassell, in her second season at the Coast Guard Academy, was most recently the fitness manager at XSport Fitness in Chicago. She has a degree in Self-Designed Sports Science from Beloit College in Wisconsin where she was the class president as well as master’s degrees in Health and Physical Education from Valdosta State and Sports and Fitness Management from Troy University.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

She was the tactical strength and conditioning coach at Fort Bragg from 2013-2104 and prior to that the strength and conditioning coach at IMG Academy in Florida from 2011-2013. Hassell began her career as the strength and conditioning graduate assistant at Georgia Southern during the 2004-2005 academic year before moving onto Valdosta State as graduate assistant for two years. She then served as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Troy University from 2007-2011 before taking the position at IMG Academy. Hassell played for both the Chicago Force and the Atlanta Xplosion Women’s of the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) and her Atlanta team won the 2006 IWFL Championship. She was also a member of the US Virgin Islands Women’s National Basketball team practice squad.

Chris begins his 15th season as head soccer coach at Coast Guard. Parsons has an 13-year record of 118-96-28 and has led the Bears to postseason play in eight of his 14 seasons (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014) including the ECAC Division III New England Championship in 2008 and again in 2012, three consecutive NEWMAC semifinal appearances (2012-2014), and a trip to the 2014 NCAA tournament. Last season he led the team to a record of 13-3-3 overall and 4-1-2 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Prior to 2003, Coast Guard had not played in the postseason since 1998. He was named NEWMAC Coach of the Year in 2007 and again in 2012. Parsons, who has 145 collegiate wins, was the head coach at Vassar College for five years (1997-2001) where he compiled a 40-37-5 record including back-to-back ECAC Tournament berths in 1997 and 1998 and a berth to the NCAA Tournament in 1999. Prior to Vassar, Parsons was the head coach at Champlain College, a junior college in Vermont from 1993-1996. His team won the 1996 NJCAA Region III Championship. In 1995, he was named the NJCAA Region III Coach of the Year as his team was the Region III runners-up. He had a four-year record of 44-20-4 at Champlain College. Chris was an NSCAA first-team All-America at Middlebury College where he earned a degree in Economics. He earned a Master’s Degree in Sports Management at UMass in 1990. Parsons holds NSCAA Advanced National, National and Professional

PATRICK MCCARNEY ASSISTANT COACH SEVENTH SEASON Patrick McCarney begins his seventh season as an assistant coach for the Bears. McCarney is a 1993 graduate of the University of Vermont and has lived in Connecticut since 1995. For the past four years, Patrick has been an assistant coach with the Southeastern Soccer Club working with the U-17s, U-18s, and U-23 squads. The U-23 team won the State Open in the summer of 2010.

Prior to that, he was the head coach at Stonington High School for eight years during which the team won three ECC Medium Division titles and went 74-56-9. He is a social studies teacher at Stonington High School and lives in Pawcatuck with his wife, Kate, and his two children, Bailey and Jackson.

ANTHONY OCCHIALINI ASSISTANT COACH - GOALKEEPERS FOURTH SEASON

Anthony Occhialini is in his fourth season at the United States Coast Guard fulfilling the role of goalkeeper coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams. Occhialini is a 2009 graduate of Montville High School and 2013 graduate of Central Connecticut State University. He was a three-time All-Eastern Connecticut Conference (ECC) selection, a two-time All-State selection and a 2008 All-American in high school for the Indians. He was named the MVP of the National High School Soccer All-Star Game. Anthony earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at Central Connecticut where he was a member of the Northeast Conference (NEC) Academic honor roll all four years. The Blue Devils won the NEC regular season championship in 2011. Prior to arriving at the Academy, he worked at UK International Soccer Camps coaching goalkeeper skills and strategies to children ages 8 to 14.

KEVIN TRUJILLO ASSISTANT COACH FIRST SEASON Kevin Trujillo is in his first year as an assistant coach for the Coast Guard men’s soccer program. Prior to being assigned as the Foxtrot Company Officer, Lieutenant Trujillo was assigned to USCGC KISKA (WPB 1336) in Hilo, Hawaii as Commanding Officer from July 2014 to June 2016. Lieutenant Trujillo is a Coast Guard Recruiting Initiative for the Twenty-First Century Prep and attended New Mexico Military Institute prior to the United States Coast Guard Academy. Lieutenant Trujillo is a 2007 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management. He was a four year Men’s Varsity Soccer player and upon graduation he continued his soccer career with the Armed Forces sports program where he competed on the All-Navy Soccer team in 2010 and 2012.

Lieutenant Trujillo was born in West Covina, California and is the son of Joe and RoseAnn Trujillo and brother of Kaylee Trujillo.

MAURA GILLON ATHLETIC TRAINER SECOND SEASON Maura is in her second year as an assistant athletic trainer at the Coast Guard Academy. She has been an athletic trainer for ten years. Maura came to the Academy from William J. Dean Technical High School in Holyoke, Mass. where she provided injury prevention, evaluation and rehabilitation for varsity and junior varsity athletic teams. Prior to that she was the athletic trainer at The Marvelwood School in Kent, Conn. for five years, and was also a science teacher and residential faculty member. She also spent her summers working for Gamebreaker/Warrior Lacrosse Camps. In 2002, Maura graduated from Alfred University with B.S. in Athletic Training. Maura also earned a Masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s of Education in Kinesiology and Physical Education with an emphasis in exercise physiology. While at Maine she worked in the cardiac rehabilitation and wellness department at Eastern Maine Medical Center. Currently, she is pursuing her doctorate in sports management from the United States Sports Academy.
