2016 ONLINE GUIDE
2016 SEASON PREVIEW The 2016 Coast Guard softball team will look to blend in eight new, talented freshmen with a strong, motivated upper class to build on a year that saw them go 14-18 overall and 5-13 in the competitive New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). “Our two strengths this season will be the athleticism and versatility of our freshman class combined with our senior leadership,” said head coach Donna Koczajowski, who is heading into her 19th season. “Our upper classmen are embracing the role as leaders, and they are leading the right way on the field, off the field and have created a true team atmosphere. Coast Guard will be led on the mound by senior captain Sara Sorensen, who is coming off her first year as the Bears number one starter. Sorensen was 13-16 last season pitching a career high 164 innings with a 4.95 ERA and 52 strikeouts. Her 13 wins was tied for sixth in the conference last season. Other pitchers on the staff will be sophomore Emily Dow and freshman Mackenzie Everett. Dow pitched in 15 games last season starting five with one win, 12 strikeouts and a 5.43 ERA.. Everett will balance her time between the mound and the infield for Coast Guard.
The infield has numerous options for Coach Koczajowski with senior Hannah Ingerson and junior Cherokee Strickland as the two returners along with freshmen Emily Hogan, Malia Hindle, Hayden Short, Franza and Everett.
SOFTBALL
The outfield will see a number of similar faces from last season as sophomore Emma Hvozdovich will be the opening day centerfielder. Junior Sarah Cammuso and Strickland will be corner outfielders for Coast Guard while freshman Allyson Holfinger will be added depth to a veteran outfield. The lineup is geared to improve on a team batting average of .277 last season and 132 runs scored. Hvozdovich is the top returning bat for Coast Guard as she batted .281 with four doubles and was second on the team with 22 RBI’s. Strickland will also supply some power for Coast Guard as she has six career homeruns and was tied for first on the team with two homeruns last year. In the freshman class, Hogan will provide a blend of speed and power at the top of the lineup while Short will be a force in the middle of the lineup making one through nine for Coast Guard difficult outs. “I think our overall strength this season will be our offense,” added Coach Koczajowski. “I see a definite uptick in our offensive abilities to put the ball in play, hit for average and I think our power numbers are going to be up as a team.” The Bears are ready for another beneficial spring training trip to Florida for ten games in optimal weather to open the year. Last season Coast Guard went 7-3 in Florida with key wins over Bates, Salve Regina and Washington and Jefferson. The Bears open this season with games against Newbury and Mount Ida on March 6th, first pitch for both games are 9:00 and 11:00.

SEASON PREVIEW
Sophomore Casey Cruzpino will start behind the plate again this season for the Bears. Cruzpino caught in all 32 games for Coast Guard last season and will use that experience to improve in her second year. Freshmen Sharayah Simco and Kelli Franza could also see time catching this season.
“Pretty much all of my infielders can play everywhere in the diamond, we are very versatile,” commented Coach Koczajowski. “They have high softball I.Q. and are very knowledgeable of the game.”
