The back line for Coast Guard also features a strong, core group with seniors Moira Meek, Emily Matthews and Clark along with sophomore Riley Cassidy who will spearhead an experienced back four who have 105 starts between them. In goal the Bears return sophomore Rachel Boohar who started 17 games last season finishing with 113 saves and 1.71 goals against average. Sophomore Anna Niedermeyer also appeared in three games last season starting one and earning her first career win against Clark. Freshman Megan Houpt has also played well throughout preseason giving the Bears added depth at the goalkeeper position.

Senior Brianna Grisell will also join Netusil as a scoring threat up top along with freshman Claire Hurley. The combination of speed, creativity and technical ability will make the trio a difficult matchup for any defense this season.

A number of new faces appear on the Bears schedule this season as they open the year with William & Patterson at home. They will play a competitive nonconference schedule with games against Nichols, Mary Washington, RandolphMacon, Salve Regina, Johnson & Wales and UMass Dartmouth. On top of the strong out of conference schedule Coast Guard will have their always tough NEWMAC schedule.

“Terry (Netusil) and Brianna (Grisell) will definitely have an impact up top and will see a lot of time at the forward position,” said Coach Grant. “I expect a lot of them as returning seniors.”

“The changes in our schedule will better prepare us for our NEWMAC games,” added coach Grant. “It is a good challenge for us and will set the tone for our difficult conference schedule.”

Through the midfield senior tri-captain Katie Clark will have a dominant role as both a center midfielder and a center back. This is her second year as team captain for the Bears, and the team will depend on her leadership and tenacity on both the defensive and offensive ends of the pitch.

The Bears are hungry to start the season and have their eyes set on another postseason berth after missing last season.

Another player the Bears will look to through the midfield is senior tri-captain Alyssa Sato who has two goals and three assists in her career. Junior Gabby Auzenbergs and sophomore Kali Borden will be threats out wide for Coast Guard as Auzenbergs is entering her third season healthy and Borden saw significant time as a freshman starting 11 games.

Head coach Susan Grant returns for her 10th season at the helm of the women’s soccer program. She’ll be assisted once again by LT Beth Nakagawa, Andrea Giuliano and Katie Shveda. Anthony Occhialini returns for his fourth year as the goalkeeper coach.

“I think we will see scoring across the board from our team as anyone could step up on any given night,” added Coach Grant. Terry (Netusil), Bri (Grisell), Kali (Borden)and Gabby (Auzenbergs) are all threats along with Lizzy Miller and Katie Clark at the center midfield position. I think our scoring will come from a lot of pieces, which is nice.”

“We obviously want to get back to the NEWMAC Tournament and be competitive in the tournament,” said coach Grant. “We need to be competitive every time we step on the field to make sure we are prepared for postseason play.”

The Coast Guard women’s soccer team is looking for a strong year after missing the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament for the first time in three years. The 2015 team went 7-11 overall and 2-8 in conference play with wins against Clark and Mount Holyoke. The Bears return 14 players this season and will look to that experience for a resurgence within the NEWMAC.

Senior tri-captain Terry Netusil will provide a scoring touch for Coast Guard up top as she is tied for fifth all time in goals (13) and is sixth in points (31). Netusil was second on the team last season in goals (5) and points (14). She will look to fill the scoring void left from the graduation of Sarah Hills who led the team in scoring the last three seasons.

ACADEMY SUPERINTENDENT FIRST YEAR

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS FIFTH YEAR

Rear Admiral Rendon assumed the duties of the 41st Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, June 1, 2015. He reported to the Academy after serving as Director, Joint Interagency Task Force West (JIATF West), the U.S. Pacific Command’s executive agent for planning and conducting counter-drug strategy in an area of operations covering more than 105 million square miles. Prior to this assignment, Rear Admiral Rendon served as Assistant Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy, the Superintendent’s direct representative to oversee day-to-day operations. Prior to his first Academy assignment, he served as Director of Staff to the Vice Commandant. Rear Admiral Rendon is a surface operations specialist with a diverse list of assignments over his 28 year Coast Guard officer Guard District in Portsmouth, Virginia. Rear Admiral Rendon is a cutterman with afloat tours as Deck Watch Officer aboard Durable, a 210-foot cutter home-ported in Brownsville, Texas; Executive Officer aboard the Patrol Boat Ocracoke in Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, and Commanding Officer of the Surface Effect Ship Petrel in Key West, Florida. Other operational ashore assignments consist of staff advisor, Seventh Coast Guard District Intelligence and Law Enforcement Branch in Miami, Florida, Operations Officer for Group Key West, Florida, as well as Commander, Coast Guard Group Mayport in Northeast Florida. Rear Admiral Rendon served as Aide de Camp to the 20th Commandant of the Coast Guard. He also completed a Congressional Fellowship in our nation’s Capital, where he worked for the House of Representatives, Government Reform Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources, followed by a two-year assignment as Drug Policy Advisor to the Speaker of the House. Rear Admiral Rendon’s personal awards include a Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (6), Coast Guard Commendation Medal (3), Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and a variety of other unit awards and service ribbons. He is authorized to wear the Cutterman’s Insignia and the Boat Forces Operations Insignia. A 1983 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, Rear Admiral Rendon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois. He also completed study at the National War College, Class of 2005, where he earned a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy.

Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&MCorpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%. While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications. Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfield Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections. Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising effort that saw Army’s “A Club” donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and annual giving grow from $500,000

to $1.8 million. He also cultivated the Army Sports Network from two radio stations to 18, including 50,000-watt ESPN 1050 in New York City. During his tenure at West Point, corporate sponsorship revenue jumped from $250,000 to $920,000 annually. He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 199294. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication efforts. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.

Tim Fitzpatrick is in his fifth year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas. In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its first-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships.

COAST GUARD ACADEMY NITCHMAN TRACK & FIELD COMPLEX The Track & Field Complex was constructed in the summer of 2007 first used for the men’s and women’s soccer games that Fall. The FieldTurf surface lies on the banks of the beautiful Thames River and is also home to the men’s and women’s track & field program.

COMMANDER JOHN MERRIMAN GYM Merriman Gymnasium is home to the women’s volleyball program and the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The gym holds three basketball courts used for varsity practices and games, as well as intramural competition. The 1200-seat facility has been home to numerous league and regional championships. ROLAND POOL Roland Pool is home to our men’s and women’s swimming and diving program. The eight-lane, 50-yard pool is also used daily for athletic training programs for our cadet-athletes, physical education courses, as well as military training programs necessary to carry out the missions of the Coast Guard for all cadets.

NITCHMAN BASEBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the Coast Guard Academy baseball team. The picturesque view from the field overlooks the Thames River.

NITCHMAN SOFTBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the softball team. The Bears have enjoyed tremendous success winning three of the last four NEWMAC tournament championships and going to the NCAA tournament four straight seasons (20092012).

CADET MEMORIAL FIELD Cadet Memorial Field was made into a FieldTurf surface in 2004 as a gift from the Class of 1952. The facility features a twostory press box that includes two coaches rooms, a room for radio broadcasting and video recording, space for media personnel, and two lounge lounge areas for additional seating. The 1500seat stadium overlooks the Thames River and the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

Coast Guard Athletics has two weight rooms, each featuring state-of-theart equipment for our cadets and cadet-athletes to use to improve their overall health and fitness. The facility in Roland Hall is dedicated to freeweight exercising while our Billard Hall facility holds our nautilus, cardio, and other guided machine equipment.

ASSISTANT COACH FIRST SEASON Lieutenant Katie Shveda, a native of West Virginia, graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Operations Research. She was a four year letter winner for the soccer team and served as team captain her senior year.

Susan begins her tenth season as head soccer coach at Coast Guard. Grant, a 1995 graduate of the State University of New York at Cortland with a degree in Physical Education, has a wide variety of coaching experience, having coached women’s soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey at several levels.

Her first assignment was to USCGC VALIANT(WMEC 621), Miami, FL where she served as a Deck Watch Officer, Boarding Officer, Communications Officer, and First Lieutenant, aboard.

Susan, who played both soccer and basketball for NCAA Division III power, State University of New York at Cortland, also earned her Masters degree in Health Education from Cortland State in 1998.

In June 2013, she reported to USCGC SITKINAK (WPB 1329), Miami, FL as Executive Officer. While serving on SITKINAK she completed an extensive change of homeport overseeing all preparations to move the ship to Bayonne, NJ in District 1.

Grant holds both a National Diploma and a state goalkeeping diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

In June 2014, she reported to USCGC MARGARET NORVELL (WPC 1105) as Executive Officer of a 154 foot Fast Response Cutter homeported in Miami Beach, FL. Most notably, she led the first Fast Response Cutter narcotics interdiction in Operation Unified Resolve, resulting in the interdiction of 32 bales of cocaine valuing over $24 Million dollars street value and the prosecution of two drug smugglers. In August 2015, she reported to the Coast Guard Academy Professional Maritime Studies Branch where she currently serves as a Nautical Science IV Instructor. Her awards include three Achievement Medals with operational distinguishing device, and various other unit awards.

LT. BETH NAKAGAWA ASSISTANT COACH SECOND SEASON

ASSISTANT COACH FIRST SEASON Andre Giuliano is entering her first year at the United States Coast Guard Academy fulfilling the role of assistant coach for the women’s soccer team. Giuliano is a graduate of Wesleyan University with a degree in Biology. She was a four year letter winner for the women’s soccer team as a goalkeeper. She has her NSCAA National Diploma, NSCAA Level 3 Goalkeeping license, and her USSF E-license.

Nakagawa is a 2007 graduate of the Coast Guard, where she was a four-year leetterwinner and a team captain as a senior for Coach Grant. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering at the Academy before earning her Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering and an MBA from the University of Illinois during the summer of 2013. LT Nakagawa has served as a Student Engineer on the CGC Rush (2007-09) and as a project manager for the CEU Oakland (2009-11). She currently is on a teaching Assignment at the Coast Guard Academy, teaching Statics and Engineer Design as well as a Civil Engineering Materials Class and Lab.

Prior to arriving at the academy she was the goalkeeper coach for the Connecticut College soccer team from 2009-2012. She also serves as the goalkeeper coach for the local premiere team the Southeast Soccer Club. She currently works at East Hampton as a General Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Sciences of Natural Disasters teacher.

Occhialini is a 2009 graduate of Montville High School and 2013 graduate of Central Connecticut State University. He was a three-time All-Eastern Connecticut Conference (ECC) selection, a two-time All-State selection and a 2008 All-American in high school for the Indians. He was named the MVP of the National High School Soccer All-Star Game. Anthony earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at Central Connecticut where he was a member of the Northeast Conference (NEC) Academic honor roll all four years. The Blue Devils won the NEC regular season championship in 2011. Prior to arriving at the Academy, he worked at UK International Soccer Camps coaching goalkeeper skills and strategies to children ages 8 to 14.

Katie started all 18 games for the Bears last season playing both in a center midfield position and also as a center back. Clark has started 45 consecutive game for Coast Guard. She is the daughter of Neil and Julia Clark and is majoring in Civil Engineering. BEFORE CGA Clark played soccer at St. Francis (Calif.) Jake is in his second season as an assistant athletic trainer at the Coast Guard Academy. He has been an athletic trainer for eight years. Jake graduated from the University of New England with a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training. He then graduated with his master’s degree in Exercise Science with a concentration in Advanced Rehabilitation.
