2016 SEASON PREVIEW The Coast Guard women’s lacrosse team enters their second season at the varsity level looking to improve on a year that saw them go 4-11 including a season ending win over archrival Merchant Marine, 14-5. The Bears return 11 players from last year’s team and bring in 11 new faces as the program will be searching for their first New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win. “We return a veteran group this year who understand the expectations for the season,” said second year head coach Ruth Ness. “Throughout the entire preseason and offseason they have been hungry and wanting to improve themselves and get back out on the field.”

Through the midfield junior Sierra Webb will be joined by freshman Kali Borden. Webb had three goals, one assist, five ground balls and one caused turnover. Borden will look to make an immediate impact with her speed and athleticism through the middle of the field. Defensively, the entire back line was on the inaugural team last season led by senior co-captain Kaitlin Dickson. She will look to lead a unit featuring sophomore’s Niki Kirchner-Hope, Kira Dabrowski and AnFei Neal. The entire group played in a combined 57 games last season and will make it difficult for any team to get an uncontested shot on the Coast Guard net.

REAR ADMIRAL JAMES E. RENDON ACADEMY SUPERINTENDENT FIRST YEAR Rear Admiral Rendon assumed the duties of the 41st Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, June 1, 2015. He reported to the Academy after serving as Director, Joint Interagency Task Force West (JIATF West), the U.S. Pacific Command’s executive agent for planning and conducting counter-drug strategy in an area of operations covering more than 105 million square miles.

Prior to this assignment, Rear Admiral Rendon served as Assistant Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy, the Superintendent’s direct representative to oversee day-to-day operations. Prior to his first Academy assignment, he served as Director of Staff to the Vice Commandant.

career. He served as Commander, Sector Northern New England in Portland Maine, as well as, Chief Response, Fifth Coast Guard District in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Rear Admiral Rendon is a cutterman with afloat tours as Deck Watch Officer aboard Durable, a 210-foot cutter home-ported in Brownsville, Texas; Executive Officer aboard the Patrol Boat Ocracoke in Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, and Commanding Officer of the Surface Effect Ship Petrel in Key West, Florida. Other operational ashore assignments consist of staff advisor, Seventh Coast Guard District Intelligence and Law Enforcement Branch in Miami, Florida, Operations Officer for Group Key West, Florida, as well as Commander, Coast Guard Group Mayport in Northeast Florida.

Rear Admiral Rendon served as Aide de Camp to the 20th Commandant of the Coast Guard. He also completed a Congressional Fellowship in our nation’s Capital, where he worked for the House of Representatives, Government Reform Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources, followed by a two-year assignment as Drug Policy Advisor to the Speaker of the House.

Rear Admiral Rendon’s personal awards include a Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (6), Coast Guard Commendation Medal (3), Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and a variety of other unit awards and service ribbons. He is authorized to wear the Cutterman’s Insignia and the Boat Forces Operations Insignia.

A 1983 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, Rear Admiral Rendon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois. He also completed study at the National War College, Class of 2005, where he earned a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy.

TIM FITZPATRICK DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS FIFTH YEAR Tim Fitzpatrick is in his fifth year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas.

programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.

In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, he oversaw a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization, the CGA Bear Club, as an annual giving entity to fund athletics “margin of excellence” projects and initiatives.

Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfield Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections.

Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department now conducts an annual women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium), which features prominent national leaders in women’s athletics for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England.

Prior to the Academy Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for two years prior, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%. While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation during the 1998-99 academic year. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.

He has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships, established a Faculty Affiliate program, began the annual Celebrate New London football game initiative and was the driving force in the men’s basketball teams appearance in the Armed Forces Classic on ESPNU last season.

Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy.

COAST GUARD ACADEMY NITCHMAN TRACK & FIELD COMPLEX The Track & Field Complex was constructed in the summer of 2007 first used for the men’s and women’s soccer games that Fall. The FieldTurf surface lies on the banks of the beautiful Thames River and is also home to the men’s and women’s track & field program.

COMMANDER JOHN MERRIMAN GYM Merriman Gymnasium is home to the women’s volleyball program and the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The gym holds three basketball courts used for varsity practices and games, as well as intramural competition. The 1200-seat facility has been home to numerous league and regional championships.

ROLAND POOL Roland Pool is home to our men’s and women’s swimming and diving program. The eight-lane, 50-yard pool is also used daily for athletic training programs for our cadet-athletes, physical education courses, as well as military training programs necessary to carry out the missions of the Coast Guard for all cadets.

NITCHMAN BASEBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the Coast Guard Academy baseball team. The picturesque view from the field overlooks the Thames River.

NITCHMAN SOFTBALL FIELD Nelson Nitchman Field is home of the softball team. The Bears have enjoyed tremendous success winning three of the last four NEWMAC tournament championships and going to the NCAA tournament four straight seasons (20092012).

CADET MEMORIAL FIELD Cadet Memorial Field was made into a FieldTurf surface in 2004 as a gift from the Class of 1952. The facility features a twostory press box that includes two coaches rooms, a room for radio broadcasting and video recording, space for media personnel, and two lounge lounge areas for additional seating. The 1500seat stadium overlooks the Thames River and the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

Coast Guard Athletics has two weight rooms, each featuring state-of-theart equipment for our cadets and cadet-athletes to use to improve their overall health and fitness. The facility in Roland Hall is dedicated to freeweight exercising while our Billard Hall facility holds our nautilus, cardio, and other guided machine equipment.

Shaakira Hassell

Strength and Conditioning Coach Hassell, in her first season at the Coast Guard Academy, was most recently the fitness manager at XSport Fitness in Chicago. She has a degree in Self-Designed Sports Science from Beloit College in Wisconsin where she was the class president as well as master’s degrees in Health and Physical Education from Valdosta State and Sports and Fitness Management from Troy University.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

She was the tactical strength and conditioning coach at Fort Bragg from 2013-2104 and prior to that the strength and conditioning coach at IMG Academy in Florida from 2011-2013. Hassell began her career as the strength and conditioning graduate assistant at Georgia Southern during the 2004-2005 academic year before moving onto Valdosta State as graduate assistant for two years. She then served as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Troy University from 2007-2011 before taking the position at IMG Academy. Hassell played for both the Chicago Force and the Atlanta Xplosion Women’s of the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) and her Atlanta team won the 2006 IWFL Championship. She was also a member of the US Virgin Islands Women’s National Basketball team practice squad.

RUTH NESS HEAD COACH 1ST SEASON

Ruth Ness is entering her second season as the women’s lacrosse coach at the Coast Guard Academy. In the Bears first season at the NCAA level, the team went 4-11 overall. Ness has been an assistant coach at Bowdoin University for the past two seasons. The Polar Bears posted a record of 23-11 in those two seasons and advanced all the way to the Elite 8 in the 2013 NCAA Division III tournament. A native of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire and a 2005 graduate of the University of New England, Ness was the head women’s lacrosse coach at Elms College in 2012 where she coached both the conference Goalie and Rookie of the Year and the team improved 14 out of 19 statistical categories from the previous season. Prior to her time at Elms, Ness had assistant coaching stints at Smith, Messiah and at the University of New England. From 2005-2007, she was a school coaching officer at Marlborough College in Marlborough, England. There she coached the women’s lacrosse, field hockey and track & field teams and served as a teacher in the physical education program.

While an undergraduate at the University of New England, Ness was a decorated two-sport athlete. In lacrosse, she was a four-year starter and four-time All-Commonwealth Coast Conference selection. In field hockey, she helped to start the school’s program as a junior and served as a captain in both her junior and senior campaigns. She was named UNE’s Female Athlete of the Year in 2005 and was the record holder for career points in both field hockey and lacrosse. Ness graduated from UNE with a degree in Art Educational Studies and owns a Master’s in Exercise and Sport Studies from Smith.

TINITA LARMANN ASSISTANT COACH FIRST SEASON Tinita Larmann is in her first season as the Assistant Coach of the Coast Guard’s women’s lacrosse team. Larmann has coached a variety of sports over the past ten years, including Women’s Lacrosse, Women’s Basketball, and Women’s Volleyball at Ledyard High School, as well as Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving at East Lyme High School. She has advanced the Ledyard Youth Lacrosse Association (LYLA) as a board member and a coach from 2007-2012 and currently assists in an executive roll of the Lax Plus Lacrosse Program, a travel team based out of Springfield, Massachusetts. As a Delaware native and University of Delaware graduate, Larmann now resides in Ledyard, Connecticut with her husband and three beautiful children.

KAITLIN DICKSON SENIOR -ATTACK HUNTINGTON STATTION, NEW YORK Dickson appeared in 15 games for the Bears last year and was third on the team in goals (11) and fifth in points (13). She also had 14 draw controls which was tied for fourth on the team. Kaitlin is majoring in Marine and Environmental Science. BEFORE CGA Kaitlin played lacrosse at Walt Whitman High School for head coach Barbara Jean Douglas. She was captain of the lacrosse team her senior year and also played soccer can basketball. Dickson has been on the Dean’s list all four years at the Academy and also on the PFE list and the CoC list. She is the daughter of Christine and Drew Dickson. GETTING TO KNOW KAITLIN Dickson’s favorite food is gluten free pasta and her favorite type of tv show is any type of crime show like NCIS or Blue Bloods. Her biggest pet peeve are people who walk slow and and if she could meet anyone living or deceased it would Mother Theresa. Her favorite video game is mario cart.

JENNIFER STEIN JUNIOR - DEFENSE/MIDFIELD ITHACA, NEW YORK Jennifer appeared in 15 games last year starting 11. She picked up four groundballs and cause three turnovers. She will balance her time between defense and midfield. Stein is majoring in Operation Research and Computer Analysis. Jennifer has been on the dean’s list twice at the Academy. BEFORE CGA Stein played lacrosse at Ithaca High School for Lew Billington. She also played volleyball at Itaca and was team captain her senior year. She is the daughter of Brian and Sheila and her father was enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.

GETTING TO KNOW JENNIFER Jenifer’s favorite snack food is kind bars and her favorite food is mozzarella sticks, chicken caeser salad wraps and nachos. Her favorite tv show is American Story and her biggest pet peeve is loud typers.

ISABELLE PATNODE SENIOR - GOALKEEPER WINCHESTER, VIRGINIA Isabelle appeared in 11 games last season for Coast Guard as a defensive player and is switching over to goalie this season. Patnode is a Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering major and has been on the deans list four semesters at the Academy. BEFORE CGA Patnode did not play lacrosse til she came to Coast Guard and was on the first varsity team in school history. She competed at John Handley High School on the swimming and cross country team. Isabelle also was a member of the school’s debate team and served as team captain for both the cross country and debate team. Patnode is the daighter of Jeanne and Scott and her brother, Garret, is currently a freshman at the Air Force Academy GETTING TO KNOW ISABELLE Isabelle’s favorite movie is the entire Harry Potter series and her favorite TV show is scandal. Her favorite food would be an omelette and the most used app on her cell phone is snapchat.

SOPHOMORE - ATTACK CHESTER, CONNECTICUT Hosley scored five goals last season. She picked up five groundballs, won eight draw controls and cause four turnovers. Cecelia is a Marine and Environmental Science major and has been on the dean’s list every semester since she has been at the Academy. BEFORE CGA Cecelia attended Marine Science Magnet High School where she played lacrosse for Beth McCabe. She served as team captain her senior year and was also a member of the equestrian team. Hosley, the daughter of Ric Hosley and Kim Kellog, was high school valedictorian. GETTING TO KNOW CECELIA If Hosley could meet anyone dead or alive it would be Jacques Cousteau and her biggest pet peeve is messy things. Her favorite song is The Joker and the most used app on her phone is snapchat. The best place to get pizza is Pepe’s and her favorite college team other than Coast Guard is the Yale Bulldog’s men’s ice hockey team.

NIKI KIRCHNER-HOPE SOPHOMORE - DEFENSE PLANTATION, FLORIDA

Niki played in all 15 games for the Bears last season scoring two goals and picking up nine groundballs. She will look to play a larger role for Coast Guard’s defensive unit this season. Kirchner-Hope is an Electrical Engineering and Operations Research and Compuet Analysis and is a dean’s list student at the Coast Guard. BEFORE CGA Kirchner-Hope attended Chaminade Madonna Colle Prep and played lacrosse for head coach Bob Rose. She was also a member of the swimming and diving team and served as team captain for both teams. She is the daughter of Darcy Kirchner and William Hope and her cousin, Ardy Effendi, attended the Coast Guard Academy and played rugby.

GETTING TO KNOW NIKI Niki’s favorite song is Bridge Burn by Little Comets. She enjoys eating mac & cheese and her favorite snack food is Cheez Its or Reese’s cups. Her favorite athlete is Tom Brady and if she could meet anyone dead or alive it would be her grandmother on her mom’s side. Her favorite place to visit is Boston and her biggest pet peeve is people who make fun of her laugh.

DARIA MCKENNA SOPHOMORE - ATTACK MYSTIC, CONNECTICUT Mckenna was fourth on the team in points (10) and assists (2) last season. She was also tied for fourth on the team with 14 draw controls and picked up 15 ground balls. Daria is a Operation Research and Computer Analysis major who has made the dean’s list three times at the Academy. BEFORE CGA Daria played lacrosse at Fitch High School in Mystic, Connecticut for head coach Patricia Semancik. She was team captain her senior year and was also a captain of the cross country team. McKenna is the daughter of Tamara and Robert. Currently her sister is attending the Naval Academy and both her parents attended the Coast Guard Academy and served in the Coast Guard. GETTING TO KNOW DARIA McKenna’s favorite book is The Bell Jar by Sylvia Path. Her favorite college team other than the Coast Guard Academy is the Naval Academy. If she could meet anyone living or deceased it would be Louis Zamperini. Her favorite restaurant is Dog Watch Cafe and her favorite TV show is Nashville.

ANFEI NEAL SOPHOMORE - DEFENSE NEWTON MASSACHUSETTS AnFei appeared in 14 games last season picking up 10 groundballs and caused four turnovers for the Bears. Neal will look to play an increased role in the Coast Guard defensive unit. Neal is majoring in Government and is also a member of the women’s soccer team at the Academy. BEFORE CGA Neal attended Newton North High school playing lacrosse, soccer and ice hockey. She was team captain of the lacrosse team for two years. She earned high honors at Newton North all four years she attended the school. AnFei is the daughter of Frank Neal and Stacy Ellender and her grandfather served in the Military. GETTING TO KNOW ANFEI AnFei’s favorite athlete is David Beckham and her favorite TV show is One Tree Hill. The most used app on her phone is either Clash of Clans or Boom Beach. Her favorite food is pasta and her biggest pet peeve are hypocrites. Neal likes any sports team from Boston.
