THE U.S. COAST GUARD AND ITS ACADEMY The Coast Guard is the United States’ oldest continuous seagoing military service, founded in 1790 by Alexander Hamilton. In wartime, the Coast Guard functions as a specialized part of the Navy, in peacetime, it performs essential humanitarian missions vital to the safety of lives at sea and the environment. Under the auspices of the Department of Homeland Security, the Coast Guard establishes and coordinates search and rescue operations by ships and planes, maintains advanced electronic and other aids to navigation around the globe, operates ice-breakers for polar expeditions and keeping domestic waterways open, enforces marine laws and Merchant Marine safety, and maintains military readiness to fulfill its naval wartime commitment. What is known today as the Coast Guard Academy began in 1876 as the Revenue Cutter School of Instruction. The original class of nine Cadets began its training on the Schooner DOBBIN, which operated out of New Bedford, Massachusetts. In 1878, the 106-foot barque CHASE replaced the DOBBIN as the Cadet-training vessel. It wasn’t until 1900 that the CHASE found a permanent homeport at Arundel Cove, Maryland, where classroom instruction was added to shipboard training. After nearly 30 years of service, the CHASE was retired in 1907 and replaced by the cutter ITASCA. In 1910 the Academy moved to Fort Trumbull, an Army coastal defense installation in New London. Like other colleges, the Academy strives to make each graduate a well-informed, contributing member of society, fully prepared to accept life’s responsibilities. But that’s just the beginning. Each Academy graduate must be a qualified officer, capable of leadership. For this reason, the program at the Academy is more rigorous and more demanding than non-military colleges to meet the professional needs of the Coast Guard. The educational philosophy of the Academy has

three basic objectives: to provide by precept and example an environment which encourages a high sense of honor, loyalty, and obedience, to provide a sound undergraduate education in a field of interest to the Coast Guard; and to provide training which enables duties as junior officers aboard ship. With these three principles serving as guidelines, the Academy staff has evolved the present curriculum, which leads to a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission as Ensign in the United States Coast Guard. The curriculum is constantly being reviewed and updated to stay abreast of the modern trends in education and the needs of the Coast Guard. Athletic competition is a part of every Cadet’s life at the Academy. Physical strength, endurance, agility, and competitive spirit are considered just as important as academic study and military training for future Coast Guard officers. In fact, every Cadet must play on an intercollegiate or on an intramural team, depending on ability and preference. The smallest of the four military academies (current enrollment is approximately 1,000), the Academy fields varsity teams in twenty-three sports. Men’s sports are baseball, basketball, crew, cross country. football, soccer, swimming, tennis, indoor track, outdoor track, and wrestling. Women’s teams include basketball, crew, cross country, indoor track, outdoor track, soccer, softball, swimming and volleyball. Pistol, rifle, and sailing are co-ed sports. Admission to the Academy is open to U.S. citizens of good, moral character who are at least seventeen years of age but not twenty-two years of age, and who are unmarried. Prospective cadets should be good students, physically fit, and medically qualified. Interested high school juniors should initiate and application at the end of their junior year or as soon thereafter as possible. The deadline for applications is February 1st of every year before attending. Admission to the Academy is based solely on nationwide competition, and not by 2 Congressional appointment. Details concerning admissions procedures and how to apply may be obtained from the Director of Admissions, U. S.

THE SUPERINTENDENT

Dear Cadets, Alumni and Loyal Fans, Welcome to what is shaping up to be another exciting season of Coast Guard Academy football. This year’s team has a lot of strength with many returning players along with some promising new talent. I’m eager to see the cadets, who have worked hard in the off season, take the field on September 6th here at home against St. Lawrence. We have the honor of hosting the annual Secretaries’ Cup game on September 13th against our rival Merchant Marine, which is always a highlight of the season. In addition, we will travel to the Richmond, Virginia area to play a non-conference game against Hampden-Sydney on September 20th. That should be an exciting opportunity for alumni in the Washington, D.C. and Tidewater areas to join us for some great competition and fun tailgates. Last year we celebrated another outstanding series of varsity athletics accomplishments with five athletes earning All-American honors including Division III National Champion Christian Brindamour in the 50 meter freestyle swimming competition, and Adam Scalesse became the most decorated CGA track and field athlete in history as he earned his sixth AllAmerican honor by placing third in the Division III nationals in the 110 meter hurdles. At the end of our 200-week program we commission our cadets as ensigns and leaders of character, so I’m always most proud of our teams who, win or lose, earn recognition for sportsmanship. I hope you will join me all season long in cheering on our cadet-athletes as they strive for success and build character, both on and off the field.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS TIM FITZPATRICK Tim Fitzpatrick enters his fourth year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas. In addition to securing a comprehensive, five-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 21 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its first-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships. Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%. While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women's basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU's external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications. Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfield Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure,

Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections. Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising effort that saw Army's “A Club” donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and annual giving grow from $500,000 to $1.8 million. He also cultivated the Army Sports Network from two radio stations to 18, including 50,000-watt ESPN 1050 in New York City. During his tenure at West Point, corporate sponsorship revenue jumped from $250,000 to $920,000 annually. He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick's work at Charlotte resulted in a 26percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men's basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT's transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men's basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league's national and local television syndication efforts. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (198487) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor's degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master's degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982. Tim is married to Kerry Marks, and they have a 7 son, James.

2014 SEASON PREVIEW “We had only a handful of seniors last season. We are still relatively young, but we have guys who gained experience last year and now it’s their time to step up and show improvement on the field,” said George. “Even though we have a lot of people returning, we still have to get better in practice and continue to work hard. We have to practice to get better before we think about winning close games, it does not happen automatically. 2013 GAME-BY-GAME REVIEW GAME #5 COAST GUARD 41, WESTERN N.E. 38 October 5, 2013 @ New London, Conn.

GAME #6 CURRY 27, COAST GUARD 24 October 12, 2013 @ Milton, Mass.

Junior wide receiver Collis Brown broke a pair of school receiving records and Coast Guard completed a come-from-behind victory for a 41-38 New England Football Conference (NEFC) win over Western New England. Freshman Derek Victory completed a school singlegame record with 36 completions as Coast Guard rallied from a sevenpoint deficit with just over three minutes to play to COLLIS BRO WN BROWN defeat Western New England in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Forced to punt with 1:28 to play the Bears seemed content to play for overtime, but the bounce of the ball had other plans. As freshman Isaiah Barrios was blocking Coast Guard sophomore Mark Behne downfield, the ball deflected of Barrios' leg and Behne alertly jumped on top of the ball, giving Coast Guard possession at the Western New England five yard line. Sophomore kicker Tyler Henning drilled a 22-yard field goal with just 54 seconds to play to snap the tie. Western New England missed a 30-yard field goal on the final play of the game. Brown caught a school-record 16 passes for 244 yards (another single-game school record), including a pair of touchdown catches. Brown had 10 catches for 196 yards in the first half. Victory finished the game with 388 yards on 36-for-63 passing, but it was a play he made with his legs that set everything up for the Bears. Trailing 38-31 and faced with a third and goal at the Western New England one yard line, Victory kept the ball on a speed option play and broke into the end zone and Henning's fifth extra point of the afternoon tied the game up. Led by junior Kevin Cook (35 carries, 153 yards, and four touchdowns), the Golden Bears were able to run for 305 yards against the Bears' defense. Cook scored a touchdown in every quarter for the Golden Bears who compiled 600 yards on offense for the afternoon. Coast Guard finished the game with 462 yards of offense, all but 74 through the air as five receivers caught three or more passes. The game saw 190 plays run (97 for Coast Guard, 93 for Western New England) and a total of 1,062 yards gained on offense.

Junior linebacker Erik Klein returned an interception 92 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter as Salve Regina forced five turnovers and held off upset minded Coast Guard 25-14 to remain unbeaten in NEFC play. The Coast Guard defense had done an outstanding job all afternoon of keeping the underdog Bears in the game and it stopped the Seahawks on JAKE their own 45-yard line to get the WAWRZYNIAK ball back early in the fourth quarter trailing 13-7. The Bears offense drove down to the Salve 5-yard line, thanks to runs of 19 and eight yards by junior Jake Wawrzyniak, and got a defensive pass interference call on 4th-and-goal, to keep the drive alive, before the game changing play, a 92-yard interception return for a touchdown by Klein for a 19-7 lead with 10:22 left, the two-point conversion run failed. Junior Jake Wawrzyniak’s 4-yard touchdown run with 4:42 left cut the Bears deficit to 19-14. Junior running back Dan Buonocore had a 32-yard touchdown run with 1:49 left to put the game away for the Seahawks. Coast Guard held the advantage in total yards as the Bears finished with 327 yards, 242 of those in the air while Salve Regina which was averaging 435 yards per game, finished with 315 yards, 129 passing and 186 on the ground.
