CLARENDON Clarendon is an English slab-serif that is characterized by its thick condensed capital and lowercase type. The typeface was registered in October of 1845, and is named after the Clarendon Press at Oxford University. Robert Besley originally created the typeface in the Fann Street Foundry. The creation was successful, as this iconic typeface is known as one of the greatest accomplishments of British typefounding. Clarendon became the first continental typeface due to its expansion outside of the United Kingdom. Besley tried to patent the typeface. Patents at the time only lasted for three years. When Clarendon became popular and the patent expired, other foundries copied it. In 1935, the Monotype foundry reworked Clarendon and then Hermann Eidenbenz revised the typeface for a final time in 1953. Clarendon is characterized as a cross between a roman and slab serif. Its plain sturdy nature, strong serifs, and heavy bold face are characteristic of the typeface. This style of typefaces has been termed as “Clarendons” or “Ionics.” The strong characteristics of Clarendon made it a common in bold type in the mid-nineteenth century.
The typeface has had numerous uses since the nineteenth century. Its use in newspaper printing became popular to increases legibility. Clarendon is also recognized from its use by United States National Park Services though NPS Rawlinson Roadway replaced it. Another common use is in western style WANTED posters where Clarendon got its true fame. Recently, Ruby Tuesday restaurant chain used Clarendon in their new identity. Clarendon is also the face of corporations such as Sony and Wells Fargo. Specific licensed publishers are the only place you can buy or gain access to Clarendon for design use. The publishers with rights are Adobe and Linotype. Adobe licenses and also creates fonts that can be purchased online. Another company, Linotype, exploits type libraries even though its original business function was in the typesetter market.
