PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE THE SECRET OF CARDINAL GIBBONS Dear Friends of Cardinal Gibbons High School, It is always a great privilege to represent Cardinal Gibbons in speaking about the tremendous work done by our educators, students, families, and alumni in developing our school community. My colleagues are justifiably proud of their efforts to build outstanding student programs, students are excited about their growth and accomplishments as scholars, artists, athletes, and leaders, and our alumni are enjoying remarkable success in college and beyond. While these programs and accomplishments are indicators and results of our school’s mission in action, the core of our mission statement is perhaps the most inspirational, exciting part of daily life at Gibbons. At the center of our mission, is a response to our call from Jesus Christ: to form men and women. Formation can only happen when individuals are truly engaged simply “showing up” is not enough. The secret of Cardinal Gibbons is that members of our school community fully engage in every opportunity and interaction. Last year I discovered a senior student in Plant Ops finishing a project at almost 10 pm. When I asked what was so important that it would keep her working at Gibbons so late, she replied that it was final preparations on a program she was leading to welcome educators to campus the next day. This is a Gibbons student: fully engaged in working so hard, so selflessly, on a loving endeavor for educators. I’m privileged to be with my colleagues on student retreats, sharing their faith and personal journeys, and am inspired daily seeing educators and students lose themselves in the enthusiasm of a lesson or rehearsal. I’m encouraged by student leaders working through the summer to make sure that incoming freshmen have the perfect welcome to Gibbons, and my faith has been strengthened along with parents at Mass before Freshman Focus, or in praying the Rosary before the Senior Parent Dinner. Catholic education is built on these grace-filled moments, and we are so grateful for your efforts to ensure that this generation of Gibbons students can experience the best in Catholic high school formation. With gratitude for your commitment to Cardinal Gibbons High School,

SPIRITUAL LIFE FACES OF FAITH Grateful for Their Spiritual Leadership With deep gratitude, the Cardinal Gibbons community said farewell to some religious leaders and hello to others during the last school year. At the November 1 All-School Mass, students and educators said goodbye to Bishop Michael Burbidge, our shepherd for the last decade, and thanked him for the years of love, support, and service he gave to Gibbons. Bishop Burbidge assumed the role of Bishop of the Diocese of Arlington in VA last December. In his homily, Bishop Burbidge gave thanks for the gift of Gibbons students and of the entire school community. “I will carry you and my many wonderful memories in my heart,” he added. This summer, Gibbons welcomed his successor, the newlyappointed Bishop of the Diocese of Raleigh, Luis Rafael Zarama, (pictured top right with Bishop Burbidge) formerly an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Gibbons students took time from their summer break to give him a tour of the campus. Throughout his stay at Gibbons, Bishop Zarama could be seen smiling and joking with the students. “We have an amazing community of loving and caring people at Gibbons and it’s cool welcoming someone into it,” said Brandon Henderson ’18. Gibbons also welcomed Fr. Daniel Oschwald (pictured bottom right) who joined the school community in August as Priest Chaplain. He comes to Gibbons after serving two years as Parochial Vicar at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Cary. In addition to his work at Gibbons, Fr. Daniel will continue to serve as the Administrator for the Mother Teresa of Calcutta Mission in Cary. Fr. Tom Duggan served Gibbons as Assistant Principal of Spiritual Life from 2015-2017 when he was named Parochial Vicar at Infant of Prague Parish in Jacksonville. Fr. Daniel described his new assignment at Gibbons as wonderful news. The school “is clearly a place of much activity, of much devotion, and of great Gibbons spirit,” he said.

ACADEMICS EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATORS Lewis Award Honoree Theology educator Mark DeLaRosa received the 2017 Monsignor Gerald L. Lewis Award for Excellence in Teaching. He is the first theology educator to be given the award, which honors outstanding educators in Catholic schools in the Raleigh Diocese. DeLaRosa, an educator in the theology department at Gibbons for 12 years and an educator in the Diocese for 15 years, is involved in many activities at Gibbons. They include; serving as a moderator of Franciscan Youth International and a frequent educator leader at school retreats. He also participates in our choir at all-school Masses and is active with a student music ministry. As the fourth Gibbons educator to receive the award, he joins Rebecca Dason, of the Fine Arts Department, Susan Goethals, science educator, and Joan Troy, chair of the math department. “We are so excited for Mr. DeLaRosa, and are grateful to the Diocese of Raleigh and Lewis Award Committee for recognizing his outstanding commitment to Catholic education,” Principal Jason Curtis said. “We have always been inspired by his love of his students, care of his colleagues, and his leadership of our school…”

FINE ARTS ARTFUL CELEBRATION A Drama Tradition The 2016-2017 production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” was the third reincarnation of the show, representing a treasured Gibbons Drama tradition. The show, staged every four years, was first produced 12 years ago. One reason is that the show reflects the values of the drama program, noted Kevin Ferguson, the department’s artistic director. “It only works if everyone contributes,” he said, adding that as an ensemble production, “it builds strong bonds of friendships among the students.” Just ask Quinn Rollar ’20 who played one of the brothers. “I believe that the best part of “Joseph ...” would have to be the overwhelming sense of family,” he said.

Rebecca Dason, of the Fine Arts Department at Gibbons, said of the award winners: “Recognition for outstanding art and creativity within and outside the school environment encourages student artists and designers to continue to work hard to share their thoughts, feelings, and ideas.” For the student honorees, studying art at Gibbons has also taught them important lessons. “Art has taught me how to explore my ideas with confidence and a willingness to learn by making mistakes,” said Brooke Connolly ’17. She received a Gold Key award for her art portfolio. 9

ATHLETICS DISTINCTIVE CRUSADERS Athletic Director of the Year Todd Schuler was named 2016-2017 Athletic Director of the Year by the North Carolina Athletic Directors Association. Athletic director at Gibbons since 2012, Schuler oversees a program that supports over 900 students in 50 teams in 24 sports, and a staff who guide students daily to live out the school’s mission on and off the field. Schuler has been quoted often saying that Gibbons athletics “is committed to providing an environment in which every student, coach, and parent has the opportunity to take part and become engaged in athletics.” Of Schuler receiving the award Principal Jason Curtis said: “What is so impressive about his work here at Gibbons is his vision and management of the tremendous participation growth and innovative programs supporting the development of our coaches and athletes and, even more so, his commitment to integrating the mission of our school into every facet of Gibbons Athletics.”

A Mission-based Athletics Experience Reflecting upon what it means to be a Crusader student-athlete, and translating those values into action on the field, in the classroom, and in competition, has long been a focus of athletics at Gibbons. In recent years, that focus has become more intentional.

Schuler and Dean Monroe, Director of Athletic Leadership and Legacy, said the All-Crusader Awards and the department’s recent launch of a series of videos focusing on Gibbons’ athletics mission are among the most “concrete recognition” of their efforts. Both, they noted, help affirm and illustrate what a mission-based athletics experience should look and feel like at Gibbons.

“We want to be very clear about what the purpose of athletics is at a Catholic school and how we are different,” said Athletic Director Todd Schuler. “So we are reaffirming our values and being specific as to how sports are formational and how we define success at Cardinal Gibbons.” The department has been implementing processes to ensure that everyone involved in Gibbons sports are champions of living out the school’s mission of faith, service, and leadership. It also is embedding opportunities into its programming to develop further students’ faith lives, provide opportunities to serve, and build leadership skills.

TECHNOLOGY CONNECT, COLLABORATE, CREATE Laptop Graduation This year’s graduation wasn’t just for senior students – it was for their laptops, too. Gibbons Technology Department initiated the laptop graduation program, enabling graduating students to take the laptop to college, pass it on to a family member, or donate it to Gibbons. Members of the Gibbons technology team restored the laptop to factory settings, making sure it fully “graduated from Gibbons” and is prepared for its next journey. In its first year, students donated some 24 laptops. The plan is to send several of the donated laptops to a middle school in Guatemala as part of Gibbons Gives, a technology department initiative begun last year to donate computers to

THE CARDINAL GIBBONS FUND THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT Every morning, before I arrive on campus, I am reminded why I love working at Cardinal Gibbons High School… My wife and I were overjoyed to welcome our first child a couple of days before Baccalaureate and Graduation. Our son is such an amazing blessing. Part of our morning ritual is praying the following prayer: Nothing is more practical than finding God, than falling in love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, whom you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything. – Fr. Pedro Arrupe, SJ

On behalf of the Advancement Office, I am grateful that all of you have chosen to fall in love with Cardinal Gibbons High School. Additionally, your contributions are an expression of that love, and allow us to provide enriching experiences for our entire community. The generous financial support, especially of The Cardinal Gibbons Fund, allows our community to form men and women of faith, service, and leadership through enhanced experiences and programs offered through spiritual life, academics, arts, athletics, technology, clubs, and community engagement. It is with great appreciation that we offer the 2016-2017 Annual Report as a visual sign of how it is possible, thanks to the support of so many, to live out our mission and provide an exceptional Catholic education. With continued support, the future is bright for Gibbons, and God-willing, my son will be able to benefit from the faith-filled, formative experiences as a member of the Class of 2035. He’s the morning reminder that compels me to advance our mission by engaging the community to embrace opportunities to support the importance of Catholic education, specifically at Gibbons. Once I arrive on campus, I’m inspired even more by over 1,700 students and fellow educators! Sharing In Your Love for Gibbons,

HOLY NAME OF JESUS CATHEDRAL DEDICATION

The dedication Mass for Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral was also a homecoming for Cardinal Gibbons, which has ties to the historic church site. Fr. Thomas Price -- the first native North Carolinian to be ordained a Catholic priest, and currently considered for canonization as a saint – established Nazareth Orphanage on the site. The cathedral takes its name from the orphanage’s chapel. Cardinal Gibbons also was located on the site from 1962-1999 before it relocated to its current campus. The ground below the cathedral’s altar of sacrifice is approximately where the center of the school’s courtyard was located. To reflect the school’s history and connection to the site, a time capsule filled with Gibbons memorabilia was installed behind the cathedral’s cornerstone. The capsule included paper signed by 2017 graduates, wood from the oak tree that once stood on the site, as well as a mass program from the school’s 100th anniversary.

Raleigh Michael F. Burbidge, who led the drive for a new cathedral. Bishop Burbidge, now the bishop of the Diocese of Arlington, VA, gave the homily at the July 26 Mass. He was joined by his successor, Luis Rafael Zarama. In 2018, Gibbons will hold both its Junior Mass and Baccalaureate Mass at the cathedral. “How wonderful that our students and families will be able to worship together on land with such important significance to both our Diocese and our school’s history,” said Principal Jason Curtis.
