You are moving forth … and the doors for you to continue your journey are open, and the world is waiting for you, for the gift of your life. Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama Salutatorian Christopher Labaza ’18, who will attend Emory University, with Bishop Zarama and Valedictorian Victoria DiMelis ’18, who will attend Stanford University.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Friends of Cardinal Gibbons High School, People are often surprised to hear the word “love used so often on our campus, especially by our students. Yet, it should be the word we should expect to hear most often, especially at a Catholic high school. I am grateful to serve alongside educators who know that love is the foundation for everything we do, and for students who expect that love should be central to their high school experience. At a recent Board of Trustees meeting, our student liaisons to the Board were asked what they appreciated most about their school. Every student gave the same answer: they love their educators and they love the incredible range of opportunities they experience every day at Gibbons. We find that great educators and great opportunities are usually found together. The best educators want to lead and serve at schools where students are given opportunities, and students respect and admire educators who believe in their students by offering them opportunities allowing them to find and pursue passions. Providing opportunities in education can be a challenge because every new initiative requires flexibility, creativity, innovation, and significant support from the larger school community. Being open to opportunity requires a school environment where educators are passionately dedicated, students are curious and creative, parents are trusting and engaged, and benefactors are committed and generous. At Gibbons, we are not only up for the challenge, we love the challenge. We are committed to the best for our students, educators, and families, and are grateful for the chance to meet the highest expectations. We believe that we can offer exceptional opportunities to learn and grow at Gibbons, and our expansion of both academic and co-curricular programs reflects our commitment to meeting that challenge every day. We are excited about our most recent strategic move to expand opportunities for our school: the purchase of Short Journey Retreat Center (read more on pages 18-19). Short Journey will allow us to meet the needs of our rapidly growing Retreat Program, as well as expand offerings in co-curricular, educator, alumni, and parent retreat experiences as well. Perhaps most importantly, we will help secure a legacy of community spiritual experiences for future generations at Gibbons. We are so grateful for your efforts to ensure we are offering the very best in Catholic high school formational opportunities for Gibbons students today and well into the future. Thank you for enabling us to focus on advancing our mission of faith, service, and leadership in church and community. With deep gratitude,
Jason D. Curtis Principal

1. SPRING FLING
Robotics demonstrations, hands-on art projects, sporting events, photo booth, drama showcase, tailgating, and more, much more… All these activities were part of the school’s Spring Fling, held in April. The student-initiated event aimed to showcase the many opportunities created by and available to students and to celebrate all things Gibbons.
2. SENIOR SUPPER
The last class, the last sporting or arts event, the last pep rally ... The end of high school not only is an emotional time for seniors but for educators, too. So, in Only at Gibbons fashion, educators made their goodbyes to the Class of 2018 extra special by hosting the first-ever Senior Supper. Educators decorated the gym, cooked the dinner and served it to the students who were integral to the life of the school for the past four years.

3. BACCALAUREATE MASS
In a historic Gibbons first, 2018 graduates, families, and friends joined in fellowship and gathered at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral, Gibbons’ former location, for Baccalaureate Mass. Bishop Zarama was the principal celebrant at the Mass; he was joined by 13 priests from throughout the Diocese.
4. GRADUATION
At graduation in May, 385 seniors gathered one last time as the Class of 2018. In customary Gibbons tradition the students - girls dressed in white caps and gowns and carrying yellow roses; boys dressed in green caps and gowns - filled NC State University’s Reynolds Coliseum as the Gibbons community stood by to honor the graduates.

15. LAUNCHING A WEATHER BALLOON, A GIBBONS FIRST
In a first at Gibbons, students in May launched a weather balloon from the middle of the piazza, sending it 92,000 feet into the afternoon sky. One hour and 40 minutes later they watched as the balloon, containing cameras, tracking units, and devices for gathering weather data, descended safely to the ground some 30 miles away.
16. THE FIRST MULTI-DAY MIDDLE SCHOOL EDUCATOR LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Last year the conference brought together 10 Gibbons educators with 11 educators from seven of the Diocese of Raleigh’s Catholic middle and high schools. The conference provided participants with the opportunity not only to collaborate, explore, engage, and develop skills to help them further their roles as leaders and educators, but also to identify and support those skills in the students, colleagues, and parents at their schools.
16
17. CELEBRATING MOTHER EARTH
At last year’s Earth Day celebration, attendees watched as a drone took flight, and recycled aluminum cans were turned into earrings, and leather strips became bracelets. They also learned how to create a native bee garden and how injured birds are brought back to health and ultimately released into the wild. There were many other lessons in between during the event at which Gibbons students and educators joined the worldwide effort to focus attention on environmental issues and inspire ways to project the planet we call home.

I engage students every day, in science, by exploring God’s creation and actively learning with them. By bringing my passion for the knowledge of LIFE, into the lesson, students are able to experience the world around them, live out the school’s mission, and aspire to be tomorrow’s leaders in church and community. Daniel Porter, Chair of the Science Department
IMPACT OF EDUCATOR ENGAGEMENT
Whether I am engaging with students during a pep rally or student council meeting, with parents at a tailgate, or with colleagues at lunch in the Hub, these are times when formation happens for us all. These are times when the Gibbons Experience comes to life and when the Holy Spirit does His work. They are inspiring. Mike Rogosich ’90, Assistant Principal for Engagement
Whether it is engaging students in a classroom or at an event, I grow as an educator more and more each year. It is the relationships I form with students that enable us both to develop together as leaders, to inspire one another, and to share our gifts and talents to further the school’s mission of faith, service, and leadership. Lauren Gentile ’04, Science Educator, Middle School Leadership Conference

Engagement is the heart of what we do at Gibbons. We have more than a ‘shared interest’ in our students when we speak with their parents. We are invited to participate in the most important conversations of our careers – how will my work be of service to this family today, how will we grow together, how will we bring joy to one another? John Aragona, Social Studies Educator
I try to create a place where my students can fall in love with math, with learning, and with life. Sometimes opportunities to engage come at interesting times – for me, it was the chance to dress my colleagues in bowties and formal aprons so that we could say a proper Senior Supper goodbye to the students who have been such an integral part of our lives for the past four years. Joan Troy, Chair of the Math Department
For my students to grow their boundaries, whether in a new language or in life, they must be willing to take a risk. As an educator, I strive to inspire so much curiosity that they want to take the risk, and to let them know how much I care about their growth so that they feel supported enough to push further. It is truly a joy to engage with my students in this exciting process. Georgia Lackey, World Languages Educator

EMBRACING #ONLYATGIBBONS It is hard to capture in words how all the opportunities Gibbons offers form men and women of faith, service, and leadership in church and community. Many of these opportunities were captured as #OnlyatGibbons moments throughout the 2017-2018 academic year. Our students, educators, alumni, parents of alumni, and our school’s countless friends and benefactors fully embrace these missionfilled experiences. And thanks to the many generous contributions to The Cardinal Gibbons Fund we not only are able to provide, but also to increase these #OnlyatGibbons moments. The creation of Senior Supper is a prime example of one of these moments. It took place on May 21 and was designed to be an exclusive time between educators and students; a time to reflect and share good memories with seniors as they prepare to embark on the next chapter in their lives. This special celebration reinforced how our students are fully engaged in all that we offer; and their laughter, hugs, and constant joy showcased their love for Gibbons. When Senior Supper ended these members of the Class of 2018 – our newest group of alumni – received a Gibbons Alumni T-shirt. Their expressions of gratitude - “I am so thankful for my educators!” – “I am grateful to be somewhere I am loved!” – “I am lucky to have such a great experience!” – “I love Gibbons!” – underscored Gibbons love for them. Please know that the generous support of The Cardinal Gibbons Fund ensures Gibbons is an exemplary example of exceptional Catholic education, committed to expanding opportunities rooted in faith, service, and leadership. Thank you for embracing these moments and for investing in our exceptional school community.

REMEMBERING TWO BELOVED PRINCIPALS There were no bigger believers in our school than Brother Michel Bettigole, OSF, and Sister Teresita Gresko, SND. It is with deep gratitude, respect, and love that we celebrate the legacy of these two former principals, who passed away last academic year.
The Gibbons community honored Br. Michel , who died on September 2, not only for his 12 years as principal, from 1994 to 2006, but for his immense contributions to Gibbons and to Catholic education. He saw that the school needed a new life, a fresh vision, a new home and ultimately gave it all three and more by situating Gibbons to continue its legacy of academic excellence, and of its commitment to the arts and athletics.
This summer, the Gibbons community paid tribute to Sr. Teresita, who died on June 29. She served as principal of Gibbons from 1972 – 1976, and it was her leadership that was a significant part of the school’s success today. During her four-year tenure as principal, Sr. Teresita is remembered not only for remaining open to new ideas, being approachable, recognizing that nothing was too much to consider, among other qualities, but also for touching the lives of countless students.
ENDOWMENT IMPACT: The Franciscan Brothers Endowment and The Sister Teresita/Sisters of Notre Dame Endowment are two examples of how we provide financial aid to keep tuition affordable for families. If you are interested in learning more about the impact of our endowment please contact, JP Gregory, Director of Institutional Advancement, at 919-834-1625 x220 or jpgregory@cghsnc.org.
