CARDINAL GIBBONS MISSION Cardinal Gibbons High School is a college preparatory school of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Raleigh. We embrace the mission of Jesus Christ: to form men and women of faith, service, and leadership in church and community.

Students volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.

The towering white cross in front of the school’s chapel announces that Cardinal Gibbons High School treasures faith and educates the soul as well as the mind. This spiritual tradition flows seamlessly into every aspect of the Cardinal Gibbons experience, inspiring myriad acts of service and leadership in church and community. Whether it’s students mentoring students at a retreat, in the classroom or on the athletic field; or faculty, staff and students praying together at Mass or working side by side in outreach programs to the community – such acts continue to promote our Catholic identity and guide our mission forward.

Throughout its 102-year-history Cardinal Gibbons has oered students a unique academic experience — one enhanced by Catholic traditions, invigorated by intellectual innovation, and inspired by a legacy of service. Whether taking AP, Honors or College-Prep courses online or in the classroom, learning about their faith or living it, exploring technology or assisting the needy, students learn not only life lessons but lessons for life, enabling them to succeed in college and in an ever-changing world.

“The goal of my valedictorian speech was to focus on the future. But I could not stop thinking about the past and my experience at Gibbons. Initially I participated in many activities without thinking about what they meant or where they would lead, but while preparing for my speech, I realized that all of those activities were part of the Gibbons spirit. We are a united community of individuals who are encouraged to try new things and step out of our comfort zones. For me, it was a unique combination of faith, service, leadership, academics, and athletics. As I move forward, I will always be grateful for the opportunities that Gibbons provided me as I face new adventures and challenges.”

“One afternoon in AP Chemistry class, we were learning about atoms and the electron cloud, and Sister Janet commented on how incredible it is that the unit called an “atom” is hardly a unit at all, that everything we call “solid”—including ourselves— is composed of something that is constantly and unpredictably moving. “It’s really a miracle,” she said, and smiled. In that moment, I felt so blessed to be at a school like Cardinal Gibbons, where an ordinary academic lesson can suddenly become an invitation to think about God. In Sister Janet and all of our other Gibbons teachers, we are blessed with people who not only strive for us to succeed at a very high academic level, but who also have deep faith and a reverence for the miraculousness of what they are teaching us.”

ARTS

Through a diverse curriculum that blends creative and critical inquiry with artistic excellence, passion, and performance the Fine Arts program is an integral part of the fabric of Cardinal Gibbons. From the classroom and studio to the stage and concert hall, the arts engage students’ imagination, enliven their spirit, and embrace their sense of collaboration, while numerous arts events that take place each year enrich the larger community beyond Gibbons.

ATHLETICS

It’s an impressive achievement — winning 10 Wachovia Cups for all-around sports excellence in the last 11 years. But what truly distinguishes Athletics at Cardinal Gibbons is how it nurtures the mind, body and spirit. Through 36 Varsity and JV sports teams and service activities inside and outside school, Gibbons Athletics instills teamwork, perseverance and leadership skills within its participants, empowering them to reach their full potential as students, athletes, and citizens in church and community.

In a year when we focused on increasing donor participation, you responded by doubling the number of gifts received. Those contributions resulted in a 22% increase in donations. Cardinal Gibbons embraces families and partners with them through the Family Association to contribute to the quality of education, student life and spirit of our school. The strength of that partnership is reflected not only in the success of our students, but in the efforts of over 600 dedicated families who, among other activities, volunteer at fundraisers, participate in school events, and help staff the bookstore and lunch room – and do so with heart. The bond between Gibbons and families extends through graduation and beyond.
