learning, thanks to the myriad professional development opportunities the school offers. “We want our educators to have the same learning experience as our students and families, and to match who we are as a school,” Assistant Principal of Instruction Nancy Barkan says adding, “that means being actively engaged in what we do from teaching and learning to community and service.” The school chose Joyful Learning as the theme for its professional development program for the 2015-2016 academic year. The vision? To affirm that what we do is good for students and to explore opportunities to enhance our teaching – joyfully, notes Barkan. In addition to the Day of Joyful Service (p.12), which was an opportunity to do service, together, and the Day of Joyful Leadership (p.11), other professional development activities included a Day of Joyful Learning to assist educators in finding the “joy in what they do every day,” she adds. On that day, 35 Gibbons educators volunteered to share their gifts and talents with their colleagues, and in turn, to help support student success. They did so in three different learning sessions that emphasized peer collaboration and support, handson learning and real-world application. All are initiatives that underscore national trends in effective professional development for educators. These activities are the latest in the school’s ongoing professional development efforts that began more than three years ago and will continue. Looking ahead, the theme for the upcoming school year is Vision 2020, which is “to explore who we are right now, who we want to be in 2020, and how we are going to achieve that,” Barkan notes. Continuing to follow national trends, the 2020 campaign will utilize blended learning, mentoring, coaching, and personalized development, along with the initiatives used last year. There will also be a new collaborative space for teaching and learning carved from the former computer lab in the school library (p.9), and an Instructional Support Coach added to the faculty. The Instructional Support Coach will provide one-on-one, small group, and hands-on support to help “teachers grow in the practice of their craft,” says Barkan. In terms of professional development, there is no going back, she adds.

ENRICHING THE GIBBONS EXPERIENCE:

EDUCATORS OF THE YEAR Every day of every year, Gibbons educators make sure our students receive myriad opportunities to serve, lead, and succeed. The 2015-16 school year was no exception. We recognized two of our educators - Instructional Technology Department Director Lesley Coe and Science Educator Angie Melcher - last year for their service and dedication. They are among the many educators at our school who inspire us with their innovation, commitment, and generosity. We asked the honorees about their careers at Gibbons; read their answers below. Why did you want to work at Cardinal Gibbons? Lesley: I was sure I wanted to work at Gibbons when I toured the school with Principal Curtis as part of my interview process. Something magical happens when you enter the building during a school day. The school is alive and vibrant, you feel welcomed and surrounded by love.

Angie: I wanted to be part of a comprehensive Catholic high school. I taught at an all-boys Jesuit high school in Dallas, and a public high school outside of Boston and loved my experiences. After moving to Raleigh, I searched for a high school similar to my Dallas and Boston experiences. Gibbons was the perfect match! What do you enjoy most about working at Cardinal Gibbons? Lesley: I love the energy of Gibbons. Everyone is passionate about working here. That passion permeates the student body and shapes the school culture. I am excited to come to work every day and be a part of this family.

Angie: Teachers and students want to be at Gibbons. This is not a school that students must attend. They really, really want to attend and stay on campus. There is a tremendous positive energy with that. I love that anything is possible at Gibbons. What is distinctive about working at Cardinal Gibbons? Lesley: I enjoy the creative environment and permission to explore creative directions, along with that exploration is acceptance of failure. A failed project is seen as a learning opportunity and better to have taken the risk than to have missed an opportunity.

What is distinctive about working at Cardinal Gibbons? Angie: Most teachers appreciate that they are not scrutinized by the administration over daily lesson plans, and teaching to specific standards on specific days. Principal Curtis describes it best â&#x20AC;&#x201C; he and the administration trust us to do our jobs. Teachers can try new ideas and know that our principal will support them. We also have all the necessary tools to do so. What innovations have you introduced at Cardinal Gibbons? Lesley: We launched a 1:1 student laptop initiative, introduced Gibbons to the Friday Institute for Professional Development, integrated Google Apps for Education into our daily practice and improved our data flow between systems. The development and growth of the STARs program has been my proudest innovation. STARs is comprised of students serving Gibbons by addressing the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s daily tech needs and collaborating with other groups to deliver great experiences with technology.

Angie: The biggest issue in learning physics is learning how you learn physics. The innovations that I have introduced are those to help students learn about learning physics. I utilize a blended classroom, make videos instead of lecturing, and model instruction, using class time to do more studentbased activities instead of lecturing. We also use video analysis and Android/iOS apps to record and analyze data students collect in class. There are more apps developed each year for physics education.

CREATING AN EVEN MORE INTERACTIVE AND ENGAGING CAMPUS Throughout our campus, development projects and renovations continue to integrate new technologies and create lively centers of student engagement and activity. Doing so enables Gibbons to support students and further their success by connecting their social and academic lives in exciting ways. These projects also inspire meaningful interactions while equipping students with the skills to excel in an ever-changing world. Cardinal Gibbons Library is a place that nurtures collaboration, offers support for the school’s 1:1 computing program, and serves as home base for STARs, our student-centered technology help desk. It also provides access to traditional information sources as well as to 21st century technologies and learning tools like Kahoot, the online quiz program, Google Apps, eBooks, and audio books. Students can also access a 3-D printer as well as myriad online databases and hundreds of newspapers and journal articles at once through EBSCO Discovery Service. And it offers a flexible environment to meet various learning styles and accommodate different functions. Gibbons Leadership Conference The conference, now in its 10th year, is an intensive threeday experience for a select and diverse group of 25 rising junior and senior student leaders at Gibbons. Its goal? To empower studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; leadership abilities to enhance all aspects of the Gibbons community.

Leadership Forum This is an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to discover leadership opportunities within Gibbons. Senior student leaders help facilitate the forum, which begins with assemblies organized by grade levels. After the assemblies, students, faculty, and staff walk around the first floor of the school to explore all of the different ways to become leaders at Gibbons.

Middle School Leadership Conference Through the Middle School Leadership Conference, current Gibbons students use the leadership skills they have learned at Cardinal Gibbons to help cultivate and develop leadership in middle schools throughout the Diocese of Raleigh.

Leadership Conference for Faculty and Staff This first-ever conference took place over three days last summer for a group of faculty and staff members to enhance their leadership skills, and in turn, enhance the Gibbons community.

Individual programs and clubs also offer students additional leadership opportunities. They include retreats, athletics, and the arts, as well as any one of the over 40 different clubs.

ENCOURAGING THE GIBBONS SCHOOL COMMUNITY TO SERVE It only takes one person to change the world, or so the saying goes… What happened then when 147 educators united on a September morning to serve others? And what happened when hundreds of Gibbons parents, students, and friends gathered to do the same on a Saturday morning in March? The Gibbons community discovered the answers on two separate Service Days: Giving back strengthens the bond among members of the Gibbons family, and helps improve the lives of people across the state and around the world.

THE FAMILY SERVICE DAY, now in its second year, is a day for Gibbons families to join together as a faithful community to make the world a better place. The morning offers a wonderful chance to build new bonds, or strengthen old ones, with other Gibbons families. Afterwards, these families scatter across the Triangle and engage in many different types of work. Examples of service opportunities included: *Helping Hands Meal Packing Project, CGHS Catholic Parish Outreach - Food Sorting Project The Franciscan School Organic Garden Weeding and Mulching Rebuilding Together of the Triangle CGHS Campus Clean Up The Green Chair Project, Raleigh SEEDS - Urban Farming - Garden Day! Habitat for Humanity, Durham Ella’s Race - Hydration Station Moore Square Ministry - Food Prep at CGHS Corral Riding Academy - Farm Day! Ronald McDonald House - Chapel Hill *Gibbons families packaged over 10,000 meals to help feed those in need in local communities.

and underscores our school’s mission by expanding its presence in church and community. The skills and experience gained through iCube will also help our students in serving their parishes, neighborhoods, and civic organizations. The club will be offering more skill sessions this year in its own space on the second floor of the Learning Commons (p. 18). The club is an initiative under the school’s broader Corporate Business Alliance with area companies. The alliance also includes an internship program, which has placed some 45 students, as well as recent alumni, in internships and offers one of the best ways for students to see the practical application of what they are learning at Gibbons. iCube is just one of numerous opportunities Cardinal Gibbons offers that help prepare students for their futures. Others include Speech & Debate, Science Olympiad, Robotics, and Media Club. They all teach critical thinking and research skills as well as collaboration and self-confidence that contribute to other aspects of life at Gibbons. Whether students are writing research papers, presenting science research or speaking in class, they say such skills not only help fuel their success today, but also will serve them far into their futures.

CONNECTING GIBBONS TO THE WORLD THROUGH:

INTERNSHIPS Some 45 participants have been placed in internships. The experience for both the sponsoring companies and the Gibbons interns have been more than rewarding. Just ask Gibbons Alumnus Steven Lopiano ’82, Senior VP of Sales and Marketing at Power Analytics, a software and engineering firm. Power Analytics hired Gibbons senior Jordan Banko ’17, who plans to major in business in college, for an internship this summer. Here’s what both had to say about the experience.

Why did you/your company get involved in the Gibbons internship program? Steven: The intent of the first call to Gibbons was to locate recent graduates in their sophomore or junior year of college interested in working in their field of study over the summer. However, we fully understood and appreciated that true experience in the work world would be a major asset to high school students struggling to choose a college major, and potential career path. In turn, we agreed to open the intern application process to graduates and current rising seniors at Gibbons.

Jordan: I believed that being involved in a summer internship would allow me to get a taste of how a company operates and gain experience working for a successful corporation. It would also allow me to find out what skills I could improve on in order to be a more valuable asset later in life. What are the benefits to your company in having a Gibbons intern? Steven: Jordan Banko has set the bar extremely high for anyone else that comes to us from Gibbons. He accomplished so much more than the internship required. He is a self-starter and very creative. He came prepared and offered so much. The map and information for New York is an example of a 100% Jordan initiative. Very impressive! The key attributes Gibbons should be proud to know that Jordan brought to us are leadership and confidence.

How will the internship help you at Gibbons, in college, and in the work world? Jordan: This internship has allowed me to gain a lot of useful skills. It has allowed me to become significantly better at managing my time and staying focused because there are real deadlines one must meet. Having an internship at Power Analytics has improved my ability to interact and work with varied individuals. This can all be applied to working on projects in school or completing tasks for my first venture or job. What do you hope the intern will learn? Steven: At a minimum, Jordan now knows what it is like to work for a small entrepreneurial company. He should also leave knowing he can accomplish a great deal. Jordan should very confidently look to his next potential employer and say I can be a valuable asset to your organization.

She worked remotely as the outreach coordinator for Lumenus, a LA-based start-up clothing company launched by Jeremy Wall, a 2010 Gibbons graduate (left). Hickey’s role was to identify companies that could partner with Lumenus. Wall says he hoped Hickey learned that, “it’s effort, dedication, passion, and ability to learn and be flexible that make successful entrepreneurs …” And for Hickey? “The most important thing I learned is that the opportunities you open yourself up to, can not only greatly impact you, but also others.”

The Cardinal Gibbons Remembrance Project The Cardinal Gibbons Remembrance Project is a collaborative undertaking between the Cardinal Gibbons High School community (students, faculty, staff, administration, and families), the American Battle Monuments Commission, and the American Council for International Studies to honor and remember United States military service personnel who honorably served their nation and who have been laid to rest in an overseas cemetery. The project, which began in 2013, is also the service component of the schoolsponsored trip to Western Europe. It was expanded for last year’s trip to include honoring specific requests from families of service members to visit their loved ones’ graves.

Strength and Conditioning Program Recognized Over the summer, the Gibbons Strength and Conditioning program received the prestigious STRENGTH of America Award, which is given to the top high schools in the nation by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). In 2016, 38 other schools received this award based on a 360 degree look at excellence. Nationwide, about 100 high schools have received the award since its inception in 2010. Director of Strength and Conditioning and Educator Chris Morland says, “This is a bench mark of progress our school has made in the area of strength because of the commitment of our students and educators.”

Trip to See Pope Francis Last September, 38 students and nine educators traveled overnight by bus to Philadelphia to see Pope Francis and to attend the Papal Mass. Though the Pope spoke to crowds of people, the group felt as though he spoke directly to them. After the Mass, they boarded the bus for the overnight return trip. Principal Jason Curtis notes that this was a student-led experience. “When you have young people who have such faith and hope to want to celebrate with their Church at this historic gathering, the school was going to do whatever possible to give them that opportunity,” he adds.

Application Assistance Night Something new was added to last year’s lineup of after-school activities - from men’s and women’s basketball games to the fall dance concert. That something new was Application Assistance Night for 8th grade students and families applying for the Gibbons class of 2020. Over 200 people accepted the school’s invitation to the November 18 evening program, which was designed to help them feel comfortable with the online application process and to help prepare students for their futures, Principal Jason Curtis noted in his opening remarks to participants.

Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards An editorial cartoon and a dramatic print were the works of art that last year earned two seniors national silver medals, placing their pieces in the top 1 percent of the nearly 320,000 works of art submitted to the Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards Program. The two seniors are also among the 35 Gibbons student-artists who won over 100 gold or silver awards or received honorable mention for their works in the program’s regional competition. Many of the students were also recognized for their art portfolios.

A Space for Entrepreneurship This year, iCube will continue to build awareness about entrepreneurship and provide students with more offerings. But it will do so in its own space, an entrepreneurial corner of the Learning Commons called The Cube. These offerings will include regular skill development workshops on such topics as résumé writing and interviewing techniques; and guest speakers, including Gibbons educators, alumni, and successful area business leaders, says Jim Baker, the club’s mentor and a Gibbons Parent.

Joining the PAC 6 4-A Conference Last year, the N.C. High School Athletic Association granted Gibbons’ request to move to the 4-A classification, putting our teams in the PAC 6 4-A Conference. Athletic Director Todd Schuler says the move made sense in terms of Gibbons’ growth in enrollment and participation, and enabled the school to provide better opportunities to our students. The Crusaders will remain in the PAC 6 Conference this year, but will move to a different one (CAP 7) next year. That means the Crusaders will play large Raleigh-based schools. These schools are in neighborhoods where our students live, notes Schuler. That move will also reduce travel for our teams and encourage greater Crusader support at away games.

Gibbons’ New Intramural Program This year, Gibbons Alumnus Casey Degnan ’99 will head the school’s new intramural program. To start, he will work with the Health and Physical Education staff “to identify students’ areas of interest and partner with coaches,” notes Athletic Director Todd Schuler. The hope, he adds, is to offer students the chance to get involved in the program at different times of the school day. Initial plans call for offering various activities, including spike ball, table tennis, and Frisbee. Later, softball, flag football, pickup basketball, and soccer, among other sports, could be added. “We are committed to providing the opportunity for every student to participate in some type of athletic activity,” notes Schuler.

Dear Friends of Cardinal Gibbons High School,

Every high school graduate is compelled, at some point during senior year, to look back. Along with their parents, they marvel at how much they have changed and how much they have accomplished. They see how all of their efforts over the years have contributed to their change, formation and growth, and hopefully this perspective gives them confidence in their future. As a school it is also helpful to look back on our community’s accomplishments, so that we may plan for the future with the confidence that we may achieve even more. At Cardinal Gibbons, educators and Trustees who have led our recent strategic planning effort have given us three areas of focus for the upcoming years.

First, we will focus on the spiritual development of our community. While this includes the formation of our students and growth in programs encouraging vocations and parish leadership, it will also inspire the initiation and further development of adult spirituality programs for both our educators and parents. Second, we will explore new ways to encourage educator collaboration, making sure that students engage with a vibrant and integrated curriculum that truly prepares them for success in today’s college setting. Third, we will develop programs centered on students’ passions, ensuring that all our students have the opportunity to identify new areas of learning and growth that were previously only available in a college setting. All of these strategic initiatives support our students as they listen to God’s call and prepare to serve Him in their vocations. In the coming years we will improve and develop our programs, ensuring that they are current, relevant and inspiring, and that they accommodate the needs of all of our students and families.
