In the past, ‘street snacks’ culture was representing the living standard and eating habit of the lower class in Hong Kong. By using low-cost ingredients and cooking methods, ‘street snacks’ could sold at a lower selling price, which could benefit the low-class. Other than that, ‘street snacks’ was also derived by the expensive cuisine. The ‘fake shark’s fin soup’ was one great example. The poor people could not afford the high cost of the real shark’s fin soup, so they created the fake shark’s fin soup by using cheap ingredients like mushroom and bean vermicelli. It shows the creativity and the folk knowledge of the poors.
snacks’ has became more diversified and international. The definition of ‘street snacks’ no longer just means the fishball and the assorted cow’s internal organs only, but start including the Japanese, Taiwan, Thai and also the desserts. The diversiflied ‘street snacks’ is being more and more attractive. To explore the eating culture in Hong Kong, ‘street snacks’ must be included on the checklist.

question 1 .What do you feel about the ‘street snacks’ culture?
question 2 .Do you eat it often and why?
I think it is an important part of the eating culture in Hong Kong as it really is a local culture which could shows how Hong Kong is named ‘Food Paradise’. Also, the ‘street snacks’ culture is representing Hong Kong as the international centre for exchanging the idea of food.
Sometimes, especially when I am hurrying for a meal, I would choose ‘street snacks’. Or when I hang out with friends in Mong Kok, it would be my first choice as the food is tasty and cheap. Also, there are different type of cuisines including Taiwan, Japanese, Thai and even dessert.

question 3 .Which district you go more often and why?
question 4 .Any recommended ‘street snacks’ ?
In my opinion, I think Mong Kok is a good choice if visitors wanna try more types of ‘street snacks’. As this culture was firstly developed there, Mong Kok would have a better development of ‘street snacks’ when compaired to the other districts like Hong Kong Island or the New Territories.
I like the egg waffle very much but it is difficult to bake a good egg waffle. As the temperature of the cooking fire needed to be balance to each part of the waffle, it would easy to be baked too soft or too hard. And a good egg waffle didn’t need any seasoning or with different flavours, the original flavour is the best.

Frozen yogurt had dominant our town even in winter time. As this is a low fat dessert, it contains less suger and fat than ice cream but with the very similar taste. Hong Kongers, especially the teenage girls love it so much.

Jimmy Lo, a cat lover who love eating so much.
eople in Hong Kong are always busy on P working or studying, even the visitors are also hurrying in shopping. No matter the breakfast, lunch or dinner, we don’t have enough time to enjoy a meal, but only few minutes to feed ourself.
‘We are eating, not devouring like a wolf.’ In my own opinion, this is a concept of all human beings. The intense workload and stressful life were way too much for every human, so i think we should sometimes treat ourself better through eating.
We, Chopsticks, are now here to provide a chance for both busy Hong Kongers and foreigners, to discover the eating culture, eating trend and the romance of having a meal in the ‘Food Paradise’, Hong Kong.
So starting from today, like every kid, we all should learn what is eating and how to eat from the very first step. Appreciate the work of farmers and the cook, feeling the love from them. We should not waste every single grain of rice and we should know that eating is the gracefulest thing in the world.
We hope our readers could try to practise more how to enjoy eating, and learn the new concept of what eating means to us, human. Eating does not only mean getting energy through feeding ourself or just a daily necessary, but also an appreciation of living and being born.
