what is 3D? 3D is known as ‘Three-Dimensional’, with three-coordinates of X (length), Y (width) and Z (height). It helps to show an object in a solid way, not just lying on a plane. For me, my first concept of 3D is the red and blue 3D glasses. When I was small, the TV program promoted the broadcasted show with 3D tricks. We needed to make our own 3D glasses with cardboard and two pieces of glassines, red and blue. This is my first experience of knowing the 3D stuff. I was so surprised and shocked at that time.

the 3D real world We are living in a 3D world. Every solid object surrounding us is a three-dimensional object. Our five senses equip us to recognize and locate the solid objects. Our sense of touching let us to experience the texture of the objects, while the hearing system helps us to recognize and determine the source of sounds. More, our visual system of eyes and brain helps to identify and discover the objects’ location. And the retina in each eye forms a two-dimensional image of our surroundings while we look around and our brain processes these two images into a 3D visual view.

the Development Basically, computer graphics are graphics created by using computers with the help of some software and hardware. Also, the representation and manipulation of image data by a computer could also create computer graphics. All of these old and new methods have their aim of depicting the solid objects in a way that like the eye’s view of the real world. The well-developed computer technology helps to ease the difficulties of creating a computer graphic, also improve the understanding and simplify the interpreting of many types of data. It equips more types of media to develop on computer graphic, for example in the animation, movies and video games industries.

Example - Up Up (2009) is one of the great and successful 3D movies of Pixar. The movie could show the well-developed skills of 3D animation. Compared to the first few animated movies, the quality of Up, including the texture, lines and colors had a great improvement.

8

the Characters The movie could provide a high quality of animation. The body texture of different characters was slightly different. For example, the body texture of Carl and Russell had a great different of an old man and a kid. Also Dug the dog and Kevin the bird had a different texture of dog hair and bird feather.

9

It could provide a great expression of the depth of field and the different texture of the sky, hills, and the clouds.

The body texture of Russell is fresh and young.
