acksonville was among 2500 cities worldwide visited by rabbinical students who spent part of their summer canvassing remote communities. The program, which is now in its 65th year, challenges Chabad rabbinical students to apply their training out in the field while providing a vital service in locations where there is often no Jewish community infrastructure. “We cannot begin to estimate the numbers of Jewish people whose lives have been affected in a positive way, as a result of this program,” says Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky of Lubavitch World Headquarters, the project’s sponsor. “Our students literally travel the world to search out Jewish people and connect with them no matter where they are,” adds Kotlarsky.

and knowledge. Many believed that they were the “only” Jews in their entire neighborhood. Still, the welcome was all-in-all very pleasant. Most were intrigued at the sight of Chassidic youngsters standing at their doorstep interested in discussing their common heritage. Amongst the communities where we spent some time was Green Cove Springs, a place – we are told – was at one time under the influence of the Klan. When we exhausted our list of contacts we focused our efforts on nearby areas. One day we decide to return to Green Cove Springs and look up the two addresses that we have not gotten to before. The occupants at the first destination turned out not to be Jewish, so we quickly move on to the second address, which is on a dirt trail close to Black Creek.

During the month of July, Jacksonville was graced by two wonderful young Rabbis-intraining, Zalman and Shmery, who spent three weeks roving the city’s outbacks. While not as exotic as Vietnam, Ireland or Peru, our pair of roving Rabbis had quite some interesting experiences of their own. Here are some notes from their diary:

As we pulled up to the house in our flashy orange car, we notice a man in a pickup slow down to survey the scene. After a few minutes, he continued slowly down the street.

from strenuous to tender. A conversation ensues, in which we learn that the man’s name is Justin and that he and his small child live in the house together with his parents. Justin’s father is not Jewish and his mother doesn’t really consider herself Jewish, but her mother is Jewish and sometimes attends synagogue. Based on this information it is clear that Justin is 100% Jewish. Justin, who always felt Jewish, never had a bar mitzvah, and agrees to put on Tefillin for the first time in his life right there in the driveway. As soon as we conclude the Sh’ma, Justin tells us that the reason he came was, ‘because his neighbor in the pickup drove by the creek where he was swimming with his son, alerting him that some guys dressed up like Abraham Lincoln were hanging around my house, and that I ought to check it out.’ ‘As soon as I saw the Hebrew writing on your bumper sticker, said Justin, I knew who you were and that G-d sent you to me.’ He told us that he left his child with someone at the creek and that he had to return right away. With that he thanked us, disappearing into the oblivion from which he had come. We stood there taken aback by what had just occurred. We found ourselves marveling over the ‘Fateful encounter’ – how we came exactly at the right moment to be noticed by the curious pickup truck, so he could report his suspicious observation to his friend, enabling a Jew to connect with his religious core by performing a special mitzvah for the very first time in his life. The amazing turn of events reminded us how everything is orchestrated by G-d – when we make the effort He does the rest.”

In addition to the original Center in Mandarin, now the Beaches communities, the Southside (including UNF) and St. Augustine, have their own respective Chabad Centers – catering to their unique local needs. What’s more, we are about to announce the inauguration of yet a new center, to serve another outpost in the greater Jacksonville area. Still, all the centers, programs, classes and activities are only as effective as the means by which they are publicized, for participation depends on information. The increased programming, has hence led to the need for new ways to keep-intouch with the Jewish community.

Chabad on the First Coast has for several years been in a continual state of growth. Be it the construction of a brand new Center and Pre-School at the Southside, or the purchase and renovation of a new facility at the Beaches, expansion has become synonymous with Chabad

The new expansion will allow Chabad to serve Jacksonville’s burgeoning Jewish community with an even larger array of Jewish outreach and enrichment activities.

This publication, called “First Coast Chabad,” is our direct line to each and every Jew on the First Coast; it is our way of sharing the ever increasing wholesome and exciting array of Jewish events, classes and activities available through Chabad.

Adding to the above, Chabad has ceded land from its 1.5 acres for two brand new state of the art mikvah facilities, to serve both women and men. The mikvah venture, which is also well under way, is a joint endeavor of an independent committee representing a cross section of the Jewish community and Chabad of NE Fl. It is also being built in conjunction with Mikvah USA – a national organization whose objective is to help build mikvaos across the country.

ith typical dedication and resolve, Chabad here in the Jacksonville has begun a new outreach program for Jews in recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction. There are successful Jewish recovery programs in many communities such as South Florida, Detroit, Montreal and Los Angeles. With these successful models in mind, Chabad at the Beaches has begun Monday night 12 step meetings followed with a relevant workshop by Rabbi Kurinsky. There will also be a Jacksonville chapter of JACS (Jewish Alcoholics Co-dependents and Significant others) starting this fall. The meetings will be run by Dr. Mendel Galer who has over 22 years of recovery, and experience in the field with 6 years as a Nationally Syndicated Talk Show host of “Recovery Radio” and as co-founder of R-Net Behavioral Health Cable TV Channel with over 18 million viewers 24/7. There are scores of Jewish men and women who are in recovery or are in need of help with their addictions in North Florida. Until now the only available location to attend meetings have been in church basements or general meeting clubs. Alcoholism and drug addiction is a very large problem around the country and Jews are not immune. There are hundreds of men and women in Jacksonville that would prefer a Jewish based location for their meeting.

Those of us who recover from addiction, have come to see the need to apply our belief in G-d to all aspects of life. The12-Step program does not dictate which Higher Power to believe in. The program does not favor one or any official theology. But it does tell us clearly that the One who has the power to help us recover from addiction is “everything.”

Yes You Can! Recovery Meetings for Jewish Alcoholics

In any case, the Jewish concept of G-d is that people, places and things do not exist by themselves. G-d is not just the Maker and Manager of all—He is the All. He is not just a higher power. He is the Only Power. He is everything. Many recovering addicts say the Seventh Step prayer upon awakening in the morning: My Creator, I AM now willing that you should have all of me, good and bad. I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows. Grant me strength, as I go out from here, to do your bidding. Amen. (Alcoholics Anonymous - page 76) Essentially we are asking G-d to take everything away from us, the good and the bad, and to give us back only what we need to do G-d’s bidding. We say to G-d “Take away all my capacities, all my qualities, all my talents, and all my character defects. I have no personal use for any of it. Whatever You think I will need today to do your work, please give it to me. I don’t use my own egoistic talents to do Your work; I want to use the talent that You vested in me.”

We say the Modeh Ani every morning: “Modeh Ani Lefanecha Melech Chai Vekayam Shehechezarta Be Nishmati Bechemla; Rabba Emunatecha.” “I offer thanks to You, living and eternal King, for You have mercifully restored my soul within me; Your faithfulness is great.” Traditionally it is a gratitude prayer thanking G-d for restoring our soul back into our body. The Hebrew words of “Modeh Ani” are usually translated as “I offer thanks”. Another translation, emphasized in the teaching of Chassidus is “I surrender”. So, another reading of the Modeh Ani could follow the same pattern as the 7th Step. ‘I surrender to G-d all of my existence. I ask G-d to give back to me what I need to do His will today.’ The key to gaining the sensitivity to G-d’s role in all of the details of our lives is to simply be in the moment. It’s easier said than done. To be in the moment, we can’t recede into the comfort of our own little reality. We need to be brave, and to stay in G-d’s reality. This is what 12-Step Programs often call: “Accepting life on life’s terms.” How many spiritual experiences have we ignored by being self-absorbed and insensitive to the perfect job G-d is doing for us every second? As it says in Psalm 118, “This is the day that G-d has made. Celebrate and rejoice in it.” Nobody sets out to become an alcoholic or addict so that he can later be eligible for recovery. Only by becoming an alcoholic can one begin to recover. Perhaps the reason that this is so is that, like the concept of Teshuva, recovery draws down such a lofty degree of holiness that it is not something that anyone can purposely set out for.
