Retro-Reflection?

Retro-Reflection? What is a reflective material? When you walk or drive at night you must ever have felt danger due to sudden appearance of car or people. People can recognize a car easily due to car headlight but driver can hardly recognize people. Thus you may think what if we can also have something like car headlight? The reflective film is manufactured under the principle of reflection characteristic of light. we scatter micro sized glass beads on all over the film. So when car headlight or flash throw light, the light reflects from the glass beads and return to the origin of the light. When the light is reflected, the material will be very shiny and it enables people to recognize its existence easily. This reflective effect will protect pedestrian, worker and you from dangerous situation that may happen at night. G.B light reflective material can be applied to road signs, safety jackets, sports supplies and living supplies.

The characteristics of reflective materials. Reflective film is considered differently from synthetic and textile as there are a lot of glass beads on the surface. Thus it has special characteristic which you need to keep in mind.

1. Color Color may look different because colors are seen through glass beads.

2. Adhesion In general, reflective material has weak bonding strength as glass beads on the surface disturb their bonding strength. So buffing process used to be required, but G.B has developed to improve bonding strength and finally succeeded of making NON buffing material

Attention Points for Reflective Materials GB Light has respect for your life and future! As for future-oriented reflective solution, we’ll make it!

Reflective materials We, G.B LIGHT, give our all efforts to meet customer s needs with strong self-confidence as a leader of safety industry. This book will help you to solve all kinds of problem you might have when you use reflective materials. The object of this book shall be prior prevention of any possible problem through sufficient conversation from the beginning. Even though you had no problem in sample stages, you may have some issues under mass-production. This book contains frequently asked issues. We hope it could help you to have correct information about reflective materials.

Mutual Communication Correct information for Materials. We can prevent many issues in working and design in advance by having correct information about materials. Through various cases, you could easily understand material character and put a theory into practice in production. For example, unlike normal Synthetic or Textile, the color of reflective material might have different look which depends on angles (incidence angle and observation angle) because we see the color through glass beads which make reflective effect. Moreover, working condition is different with normal Synthetic or Textile item. You should consider Reflective material character while working.

Prior Inspection Item. Was it appropriate working condition for this material? Was it appropriate condition for Pattern, H/F design and Mold depth?

The Problems in H/F Welding

1 Reflective TPU H/F Welding Status - H/F Welding : May have ragged cutting line(remainder) after H/F welding. Cause - Misunderstanding of total thickness causes difference between thickness of mold and actual material. EX Total thickness of GB 8000+0.4MM TPU is 0.5MM, but factory misunderstands its total thickness as 0.4mm. If they make mold for 0.4mm thickness, it must be hard to do H/F cutting and may have ragged cutting line. (remainder)

A. Base - Textile

Make mold depth 0.1mm thinner or even, to dip TPU into mesh a little.

B. Base - Synthetic

Make mold depth 0.1~0.15mm deeper to ensure adhesion between TPU and Synthetic

31

Picture A. Base - Textile

B. Base - Synthetic

Solution - Use suitable mold for correct thickness. Example for Mold Size - 1. In case of 0.5mm thickness material (GB8000+0.4MM TPU) 1) H/F Welding on Mesh basement. -Make Mold depth same as thickness of material. But, not over 0.5MM. 2) H/F Welding on Synthetic basement. -Make Mold 0.1~0.15MM deeper than material thickness.

Reflective Materials

The Problems in H/F Welding

2 H/F Welding on R/P Type Synthetic. Status - Air bubble on the surface after H/F Welding on specific material, especially for R/P Type embossed material.

Cause - There could be air bubbles on the surface of material because air cannot flow out while H/F Welding.

The Problems in H/F Welding

4 Color of basement affects the color of Reflective Material Status - In case of H/F welding w/ light colored thin TPU on a dark basement; : Basement color is transparent to thin TPU

4 -

4 Picture

Solution - 1. Use thicker TPU. 2. Need to check the color of basement and reflective by mutual communication. 3. Printing white color on TPU

-

-

37

The Problems in H/F Welding

5 H/F Pattern without considering working condition Status - Poor H/F Performance(unclear H/F welding) due to narrow pattern.

5 -

5 Case

Cause - For above pictures, 1.0mm patterns gap is too narrow for H/F welding so TPU is not cut clearly due to TPU’s extension. Therefore, we recommend at least 1.5mm space between pattern and pattern for clear cutting.

-

38

39

The Problems in H/F Welding

6 Surface Problem on Protruded Part H/F Welding Status - Excessive working condition may cause surface damage (especially protruded part) and glass beads, main function for reflection, peel off. As the result, reflective effect is gone out.

6 -

6 -

Case

Cause 1. Excessive pressure for high convex with narrow width 2. Working condition is beyond materials property so that glass beads peel off and reflective effect loses.

-

40

Reflective Materials

Picture Reflective 0.8mm

Glass beads peel off

0.8mm material is over expanded up to 1.8mm so that glass beads peel off and surface is defected.

Solution - 1. To reduce protruded height. -

2.To widen protruded width

Case 2

Proper Pressure + Temperature

42

Over Pressure + Temperature

Reflective Materials

Notice In mass production, its H/F working condition may be out of the initial setting so regular check is necessary.

Solution - With the proper working condition (output, pressure..), the PU foam should not be melt. Caution for excessive working condition.

-

-

43

The Problem in H/F Molding

1 Torn Synthetic after H/F molding Status - In general, H/F machine has electric current on upper shelf(mold). However, for below sample was done by machine to have electric current on upper and lower shelf(mold). Too excessive pressure and temperature in H/F molding make 1.3mm reflective synthetic hard so that its property may change and get torn(B). After heel lasting harden reflective synthetic, it shows defect (A)

Synthetic is composed of Poly & Nylon and excessive pressure & temperature make non-woven melted so that physical property is changed and it causes defect.

1 -

1 -

Case

44

Reflective Materials

Cause - Excessive working condition causes the defect so that 1.3mm thickness material becomes 0.6mm.

Solution - 1. Don’t put electric current on lower shelf(mold) 2. If not available (case 1), put 1.0mm canvas on lower shelf(mold) 3. Use the proper pressure and temperature (Don’t have excessive pressure)

-
