I was a wide-eyed nine-year-old when I first auditioned for a ballet school. I had never studied ballet before and assumed, if accepted, I would need to attend one ballet class each week. Wrong. I was told I was already old and behind (almost ten!) and a minimum of three classes a week was required for the first year. My second year ramped up to four and by the time I was twelve, I was taking eight classes a week.

A thank-you to the many faculty members who contribute dances that showcase each student while impressing and entertaining audiences. This year, two complete ballets created by Kiyon Ross and Margaret Mullin will be performed by our Professional Division students. These students come from all over the world, but several started right here with PNBS as DanceChance and Creative Movement kids. Each of our students has a path and none of us know exactly what that path is, but we hope to support them each step of the way—pliés, tendus, grand battements, and all. Thank you for joining us today and for supporting your child’s commitment to ballet.

A word of appreciation to the families who ensure students are able to make all their classes, not to mention rehearsals, performances, summer course auditions, pointe shoe fittings, and more. We recognize the commitment and know it is sizable. Today you can witness the fruits of your efforts in our 38th annual School Performance. In two shows, 600 students from Level I through Professional Division will take to the stage. Our youngest demonstrate newly learned épaulement, posture, clean lines, and clear musicality. Our most advanced show choreography that is both classical and contemporary, with daring partnering and emotional range. Witnessing the advancement with each new level is astounding. The possibilities of expression through dance are limitless.

One might assume the enormous number of hours spent in the studio would cause other parts of a child’s education or existence to suffer, but more often than not, we hear the opposite. Ballet students master time management, gain a sense of confidence, and learn how to apply themselves, correct themselves, and work as teams. Many in our School will dance professionally, but most won’t. We are confident that whether they dance in a company, college, or kitchen, the skills and standards they learn at our School will never leave them. In fact, we’d bet those invaluable skills serve students well in any direction they choose.

New Voices:
CHOREOGRAPHY AND PROCESS FOR YOUNG WOMEN IN DANCE
“I want to give these young women tools, just like a carpenter… a saw, a hammer… and information how to use these tools so they can choose to build something of value. So they can share their point of view, with confidence, in the coolest medium ever—dance!” —Eva Stone PNB launched a groundbreaking initiative this year – a year-round student choreography course, just for young women. New Voices: Choreography and Process for Young Women in Dance debuted in the fall of 2018. Ballet choreography is a field predominated by men and PNB wants to encourage more young women to take an early interest in the choreographic process. “Choreography in classical ballet companies has long been a field where men have received opportunity and encouragement but women have not felt as supported. Though excited by the possibility of nurturing young dance makers whose work may one day grace our stage, our goal is to introduce students to the concept of choreography, teamwork and creativity. Many will discover a passion and find a door has been opened and remains open for them in the future.” —Peter Boal Level VII students met once a week with PNB Faculty member Eva Stone, exploring key choreographic concepts leading to both solo and group choreography projects. Students presented movement studies in class in order to give and receive constructive feedback. Three studio presentations were held during the year allowing students to perform their choreographic creations in front of a larger audience of family, friends, and fellow students. They also presented their work on June 14 as part of NEXT STEP: Outside/In. In addition to classroom work and presentations, choreographer Robyn Mineko Williams spoke to students about her experience as a professional female choreographer. Ms. Williams set a new piece, The Trees The Trees, for PNB’s DIRECTOR’S CHOICE program in March. Students attended a performance of DIRECTOR’S CHOICE, as well as a performance of Batsheva Dance Company at the Paramount Theater. “It’s wonderful to look back to September and reflect on how far these young women have come. Through this experience, they have learned to create work that is purposeful and insightful.” —Eva Stone The program is made possible through generous funding support from the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation.
THank you PNB SCHOOL PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION Through fundraising, communication, and volunteerism, the Pacific Northwest Ballet Parents’ Association provides valuable support to the School. Every PNBS parent is a member of the Parents’ Association. The Association is led by a Steering Committee that oversees a number of projects throughout the year, including: hosting Petite Finale receptions, fundraising for scholarships, costuming, and everything in between through merchandise, flower, and class photo sales, and advocating for PNBS in their communities.

Highlights / 2018–2019 Tiler Peck in the House
New York City Ballet principal dancer Tiler Peck taught class for the Professional Division women this April. Ms. Peck stars in the Dance Magazine Award-winning documentary, BALLET NOW, introduced ballet to millions of new fans on Ellen, and made her 5th Avenue Theatre debut performing the title role in the new musical Marie: Dancing Still.
Dance for Parkinson’s Classes
In collaboration with Seattle Theatre Group (STG), STG Dance for PD® offers internationally acclaimed dance classes for people with Parkinson’s disease and their care partners. Classes held at the Francia Russell Center explore movement in a creative, joyful, and stimulating manner. Led by PNBS teaching artists and accompanied by live music, classes are free and drop-ins are always welcome!
International Ballet Exchange Students
Ballet is a global art form, and PNBS is proud to offer opportunities for students to study ballet around the world through our international partner exchanges. Eight PNBS students were selected by faculty to represent PNBS at our partner schools.
National Ballet School (Toronto)
Cassidy Cocke and Myra Hoover Kang will study in Ontario this summer. Our longest running partnership, the program was started by Francia Russell and NBS artistic director Mavis Staines in 1999.

What’s more fun than a studio full of teens watching a free rehearsal of NEXT STEP works? Nothing! PNBS students took the night off class to enjoy the first public viewing of works created just for the Professional Division by PNB dancers.
Petite Finales
Creative Movement and Pre-Ballet students (450 of them!) danced for family and friends at the Petite Finale performances. Each class performed an original work, and Level VIII and Professional Division students performed excerpts from Raymonda Variations and The Sleeping Beauty. PNB School’s annual fundraiser, Spring Fling, welcomed 400+ guests to the Francia Russell Center for an afternoon of dance, sweet treats, fun, and fundraising! 800 Fourth Graders at The Nutcracker
PNB’s Community Education Programs, through a partnership with an anonymous donor, brings nearly 800 fourth grade public school students to George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® every year. Included in the partnership are pre-performance workshops, study guides translated into five languages, performance tickets, The Nutcracker soundtrack, and transportation to and from McCaw Hall.

FaculTY / 2018–2019 Kelly Boal trained at the School of American Ballet. She joined New York City Ballet in 1984 and was promoted to soloist in 1989. She left NYCB in 1993 to pursue guesting opportunities that included performances with Dutch National Ballet and Ballet Manila, and participation in the Gala des Etoiles in Montreal. Ms. Boal taught at the School of American Ballet and joined the PNBS faculty in 2005. Emily Coello, a native of Rock Island, Illinois, trained at the Alabama School of Fine Arts under Dame Sonia Arova before joining Alabama Ballet. She holds a BFA with honors from the New School University/Joffrey Ballet program where she trained with David Howard, Eleanor D’Antuono, and Trinette Singleton. While in New York, she was chosen by David Howard to be a demonstrator in his “World Tour” class video. For more than twelve years, she was first a dancer and then ballet mistress for City Ballet of San Diego. Ms. Coello joined the PNBS faculty in 2017.

PNBS’s diverse faculty of dance educators are collectively devoted to the individual progress of each and every PNBS student. They performed professionally with companies around the world, and many right here at Pacific Northwest Ballet. Peter Boal is Artistic Director of Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB) and Director of Pacific Northwest Ballet School (PNBS). Mr. Boal became Artistic Director of Pacific Northwest Ballet in 2005 following a successful career with New York City Ballet as a principal dancer and a faculty member at the School of American Ballet (SAB). Mr. Boal received his dance training from SAB under the directorship of George Balanchine and, as a faculty member, taught technique, variations, men’s and women’s classes, and partnering. He has also been a guest teacher at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and Royal Danish Ballet School. Denise Bolstad, Managing Director of Pacific Northwest Ballet School, trained in Spokane with Thelma Young and performed with Spokane Concert Ballet. She studied on scholarship at San Francisco Ballet School and continued her training in Seattle with Perry Brunson and First Chamber Dance Company. Ms. Bolstad has been on the staff of Pacific Northwest Ballet School since 1980. Abbie Siegel, School Principal, performed with Connecticut Ballet and became the company’s associate ballet mistress. Before joining the PNBS faculty in 1991, she was on faculty at the Harkness School, Eliot Feld Ballet in New York, and Connecticut Ballet. In addition to teaching, Ms. Siegel was Director of PNBS’s DanceChance program (1999–2002) and was appointed Principal of the Francia Russell Center in 2002 and became School Principal in 2012. Marisa Albee joined PNB as an apprentice in 1989. She was promoted to corps de ballet in 1990 and to soloist in 1994. She studied at the School of American Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet School’s Summer Course. Prior to joining the PNBS faculty, Ms. Albee taught at the Washington Academy of Performing Arts.

Caitlin Cooney, a Seattle native, trained at Pacific Northwest Ballet School for 11 years. She graduated from PNB’s Professional Division program and joined Kansas City Ballet (KCB). In addition to an 11-year performing career with KCB, Ms. Cooney spent 11 years teaching dancers of all ages at Kansas City Ballet School. She joined the PNBS faculty in the fall of 2014.
Lauren DeBard trained at Gem City Ballet's pre-professional classical ballet program in Dayton, Ohio. She received her BA in international theater production and a minor in classical ballet at Ohio Northern University. She studied under full scholarship at Point Park University's summer dance program. She has taught ballet for 10 years and joined the PNB School faculty in 2018. Juanita Franke received her early training at the Royal Academy of Dance. She received her BA at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, where she danced and choreographed for the Appalachian Dance Ensemble. She taught at the Kehl School of Dance in Madison, Wisconsin, and choreographed for the Verona Youth Ballet. Ms. Franke joined the PNBS faculty in 2012. Naomi Glass was raised in Mercer Island, WA. Naomi danced for the Houston Ballet for a decade, retiring as a soloist. Since joining PNBS in 2015, Naomi now serves as ballet faculty, as a teaching artist for PNBS’ new STG Dance for PD® program, and as DanceChance Manager. Naomi has a Bachelor of Science degree and is completing a Master of Arts in Education. Susan Gorter studied at the School of the Pennsylvania Ballet and performed as an apprentice with Pennsylvania Ballet. She danced with the Basel Ballet in Switzerland and taught for the Basel Ballet School. Ms. Gorter joined the PNBS faculty in 2001.
Nancy Crowley received her early ballet training in Marshfield, Massachusetts. She joined the faculty of PNBS in 2013 after a performing career in classical and contemporary ballet companies in the United States and Canada. She is a former principal dancer with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, La La La Human Steps, and Ballet Arizona, where, from 2005–2012, she served also as school director and company rehearsal assistant.
Benjamin Griffiths is from Boise, Idaho, where he received his early training with Lisa Moon. He also studied at the School of American Ballet, where he was a 2001 Mae L. Wien Award recipient. He attended summer courses at Pacific Northwest Ballet School and San Francisco Ballet School. After dancing with Boston Ballet, Mr. Griffiths joined Pacific Northwest Ballet as a member of the corps de ballet in 2005. He was promoted to soloist in 2008 and principal in 2016.
Dammiel Cruz is from New York, New York. He studied on full scholarship at the School of American Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet School, and he attended summer courses at Pacific Northwest Ballet School and Boston Ballet School. He was the recipient of the Mae. L. Wien Award and Danish American Nationals Cultural Exchange (DANCE) scholarship. Mr. Cruz joined Pacific Northwest Ballet as an apprentice in 2016 and was promoted to corps de ballet later that year.
Dana Hanson began her training on Vashon Island with John Wilkins and continued her studies at Olympic Ballet School, Pacific Northwest Ballet School, and the School of American Ballet. She danced with the New York City Ballet (1990–2006). Prior to joining the PNBS faculty in 2006, Ms. Hanson was a frequent guest teacher at the School of American Ballet.
Michele Curtis trained at the Joffrey Ballet School, Pacific Northwest Ballet School, and Merce Cunningham Dance, and she received a BA in Dance from UCLA. She has performed with Connecticut Ballet, Mark Morris Dance Group, and Donald Byrd/The Group. She served on the faculty of Connecticut Ballet and taught freelance at various studios in New York and Connecticut and throughout the Northwest. Ms. Curtis joined the PNBS faculty in 2006 and is also ballet master for PNB’s annual Family Matinee. Kyle Davis is from Green Bay, Wisconsin. He trained at Makaroff School of Ballet, the Rock School for Dance Education, and North Carolina School of the Arts. He attended summer courses at Milwaukee Ballet School, the School of American Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet School. In 2008, Mr. Davis won the Prix de Lausanne competition in Lausanne, Switzerland. Mr. Davis joined Pacific Northwest Ballet as an apprentice in 2008, was promoted to corps de ballet in 2009, and soloist in 2016.
Dane Holman trained at the North Carolina School of the Arts, American Ballet Theatre, and School of American Ballet. She danced with American Ballet Theatre II and the Cleveland Ballet. Ms. Holman joined the PNBS faculty in 1997. Claudia Houston-Aragon is from Cali, Colombia. She graduated from Instituto Colombiano de Ballet Classico, Colombia's only performing arts grade school, in 2003 with a focus in classical ballet. Before moving to the U.S. in 2011, she performed as a soloist with and taught at Ballet Santiago de Cali. She spent six years dancing and teaching in Florida before relocating to the Seattle area. Claudia holds a law degree from Universidad Libre de Cali and recently completed her bar exam. She joined the PNB faculty in 2017. Carrie Imler is from Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She trained on scholarship at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet School and attended summer courses at the School of American Ballet. She joined Pacific Northwest Ballet as an apprentice in 1995. In 1996, she was promoted to corps de ballet. She was made a soloist in 2000 and principal in 2002. She joined the PNB faculty in 2017.
Deborah Kenner received her BFA from the University of Arizona. She performed with Colorado Ballet, David Taylor Dance Theatre, and State Street Ballet, and was artistic director of Tucson Regional Ballet (2008–2010). Ms. Kenner joined PNBS faculty in 2010 and also serves on the PNBConditioning staff. Miriam Landis studied at Ballet West Conservatory, San Francisco Ballet School, and the School of American Ballet, and was a member of Miami City Ballet (1996–2000). Ms. Landis earned a BA in English from Stanford University. She has taught ballet at Stanford and the University of Utah. Ms. Landis teaches Children’s Division classes. Dina McDermott was born and raised in New Jersey, where she received her earliest ballet training with Irine Fokine. She received her BFA from The Juilliard School, and subsequently danced professionally in New York for five years. After earning her MFA at Arizona State University, she went on to pursue a teaching career. Dina has taught at universities/colleges, community centers, public school/artist-in-residence, with at-risk youth, and at PNB School since 2001. In addition, Dina teaches Pilates in the PNB Conditioning Program. She is also a dance author; her recent book, A Dancer's Diary: Around the World in Thirteen Dances, is available on Amazon. Louise Nadeau is from Long Island, New York. She trained at the Alexandra School of Ballet in St. Louis and the School of American Ballet. Ms. Nadeau danced with Basel Ballet and Kansas City Ballet before joining Pacific Northwest Ballet as a soloist in 1990. She was promoted to principal in 1992 and retired from the stage with a celebratory gala in June of 2009. She has toured extensively nationally and internationally throughout her career, and in 2005 performed with Peter Boal and Company. She began teaching for PNBS in 2006 and returned in 2015 after serving as school principal for Evergreen City Ballet. Kaori Nakamura is from Gumma, Japan. She trained at the Reiko Yamamoto Ballet Company and the School of American Ballet. In 1986, she won first prize at the Prix de Lausanne competition in Lausanne, Switzerland. In 1988, she won a bronze medal at the International Ballet Competition in Varna, Bulgaria. Ms. Nakamura joined Royal Winnipeg in 1990, where she was made a principal dancer. She joined Pacific Northwest Ballet as a soloist in 1997 and was promoted to principal in 1998. Ms. Nakamura joined the PNBS faculty in 2014. Laurie McKarns Perrault trained at the National Academy of the Arts, San Francisco Ballet School and Pacific Northwest Ballet School. Ms. Perrault was a principal dancer with Southern California’s San Gorgonio Ballet Company. She has taught dance and Pilates in California, Washington, New York and Uganda. She has also earned a B.S. in Kinesiology from CSU San Bernardino and an M.A. in Dance Education from New York University. Meg Potter trained on scholarship at the Joffrey Ballet School. She performed with the Joffrey II, American Ballet Theatre, and Pacific Ballet Theatre, where she was also ballet mistress. She was a faculty member at the School of Oregon Ballet Theatre and was an adjunct faculty member at Portland State University. Ms. Potter joined the PNBS faculty in 1998 and also holds the position of Assistant Principal. Lesley Rausch is from Columbus, Ohio. She studied with Shir Lee Wu at Columbus Youth Ballet and also trained at Pacific Northwest Ballet School. Ms. Rausch joined Pacific Northwest Ballet as member of the corps de ballet in 2001. She was
promoted to soloist in 2007 and principal in 2011. In addition to her performing career, Ms. Rausch has been a guest teacher at Ballet Hawaii, Evergreen City Ballet, New American Youth Ballet, and Punahou Dance School. She joined the PNB faculty in 2016. Kiyon Ross is from Baltimore, Maryland. He trained at Baltimore School of the Arts, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School, the School of American Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet School. He joined Pacific Northwest Ballet in 2001 and retired as a soloist in 2015. He currently teaches on the faculty of PNB School, works with PNB’s DanceChance program to bring classical dance training to the students of Seattle Public Schools, and has been program manager of PNB’s annual NEXT STEP choreographers’ showcase since 2012. Mr. Ross is also an established American choreographer. Since creating his first work in 2001, he has made ballets for PNB, PNB School, New York Choreographic Institute, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Cornish College of the Arts, and Spectrum Dance Theater. Mr. Ross has been resident choreographer at Ballet Arkansas since 2015. Kendal Ruland trained at Washington Academy of Performing Arts, International Ballet Academy, San Francisco Conservatory, LINES Ballet, and San Diego City Ballet. She was an apprentice with Ballet BC in Vancouver, British Columbia. In addition to teaching and choreographing at various dance schools throughout the Pacific Northwest, Ms. Ruland is a certified Gyrotonic Trainer. She joined the PNB School faculty in the fall of 2018. Lynne Short returned to the Pacific Northwest after spending 17 years in Texas. She served as a faculty member and rehearsal mistress at Chamberlain School of Ballet in Plano; prior to that she was the Principal of Ballet Austin Academy in Austin. From 1984-2000 Ms. Short was a faculty member at Pacific Northwest Ballet School. Ms. Short danced professionally with the Memphis Ballet, Hartford Ballet, First Chamber Dance Company, and enjoyed performing character roles with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Ballet Austin, Chamberlain Performing Arts and Ft. Worth Ballet. Suzanne Singla trained at Columbia Dance Ensemble in Vancouver, Oregon Ballet Theatre School, and the Ailey School, where she received a Certificate of Dance. She performed with dance ensembles in Oregon, New York, and South Africa. She has been on faculty at Connecticut Dance Theatre, School at Steps, and Ballet Hispanico. Ms. Singla joined the PNBS faculty in 2004. Eva L. Stone trained at SUNY Purchase and the Alvin Ailey School. She holds a BFA in Performance and Choreography from Arizona State University and an MA in Choreography and Choreological Studies from the Laban Centre in London, England. She has performed with modern dance companies in Boston and Los Angeles. In 1995, she re-established her modern dance company in Seattle and maintains an extensive teaching and lecturing career throughout the Puget Sound region. Ms. Stone joined the PNBS faculty in 2008. In September 2018 she launched a nationally recognized choreography program “New Voices: Choreography and Process for Young Women in Dance” at PNBS. Most recently, Eva has been commissioned to create a main stage work for Pacific Northwest Ballet’s 2019/20 season. Marjorie Thompson trained at the School of American Ballet and danced with New York City Ballet. She has been on faculty at the School of American Ballet, Ballet Arts Minnesota, Eliot Feld Ballet, and Pennsylvania Ballet School. She joined the PNBS faculty in 1996 and was also Director of Therapy and Conditioning. She was Director
of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School and School Principal of Minnesota Dance Theatre before returning to the PNBS faculty in 2007. Julie Tobiason trained at the School of American Ballet. She danced with Chicago City Ballet under the direction of Maria Tallchief and joined PNB in 1986. She was promoted to soloist in 1989 and to principal in 1992. Ms. Tobiason has been a guest teacher at PNBS since 1997 and joined the faculty in 2002. She is the founder and former Director of Seattle Dance Project; and is currently Ballet Director at Tacoma Urban Performing Arts Center. In 2017, Ms. Tobiason was awarded the James Ray Residency to create kairos for SIDF 2018. Ms. Tobiason earned her BA in Business Administration from Foster School of Business at University of Washington in 2018. Malia Vassar is originally from Portland, Oregon. She received her training under Haydee Gutiérrez, Josie Mosley, and James Canfield at the Oregon Ballet Theatre, and the School of the American Ballet. Prior to joining PNBS, she spent 15 years performing in the Portland area and teaching/directing educational outreach programs throughout the Northwest. Giovanni Villalobos was born in Puerto Rico, where he began dancing at the age of eight under the guide of Roberto Rodriguez. He studied at the School of American Ballet (with Peter Boal, Jock Soto and Andrei Kramarevsky), the Royal Danish Ballet (as part of the D.A.N.C.E student exchange program), and choreographed for the New York Choreographic Institute. In 2003 he was awarded the Mae L. Wien Award for Outstanding Promise, and a year later he joined the New York City Ballet. He has worked with prominent choreographers including Christopher Wheeldon, Susan Stroman, Eliot Feld, Benjamin Millepied, Liam Scarllet, and appeared in the film version of Jerome Robbins’ Opus Jazz. In 2014, he was chosen to become a member of the Teachers Fellowship at SAB. Mr. Villalobos was a guest teacher at Pacific Northwest Ballet School in 2015, and joined PNB School as a year-round faculty member in the fall of 2018. Amber Willett trained at Belliston Academy of Ballet in Littleton, Colorado, then continued her studies as a Professional Division student at PNBS. She danced with Sonia Dawkins/Prism Dance Theatre, Whim W’Him, and Terpsicore Dance Company. Her choreography has been commissioned for City Opera Ballet of Bellevue, Convergence Ballet Company, and has been performed in Seattle International Dance Festival, London, England, and Tuebingen, Germany, where she was Choreographer-in-Residence with Inztanz International Center for Dance. Additionally, she has been a recipient of the Body Space Time Choreographer's Residency through the University of Washington Dance Department. She joined the PNB faculty in 2015. Le Yin trained at Beijing Dance Academy and Houston Ballet Academy. He was a principal dancer with Houston Ballet and joined PNB as a principal dancer in 2002. He joined the PNBS faculty in 2009 and continues to perform nationally and internationally. Don Vollema joined PNBS as an accompanist in 1991 and was appointed Music Staff Coordinator in 2012. He holds a BA in Piano Performance from Whitworth College and an MA in Piano Accompanying from Arizona State University. Mr. Vollema began accompanying ballet classes in 1984 for Spokane Ballet and has also accompanied at Whitworth College, Arizona State University, Ballet Arizona, and Burklyn Ballet in Vermont.

DanceChance was created in 1994 by Founding Artistic Director Francia Russell with a big goal—improve equity and access in classical ballet training, starting with Pacific Northwest Ballet School. Since its inception, DanceChance is proud to have graduated more than 1,700 students. Graduates have gone on to dance with Pacific Northwest Ballet and other companies including: San Francisco Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance, Singapore Dance Theater, Ballet Arizona, Oregon Ballet Theatre, and Grand Rapids Ballet. Over the years, the program has grown from a handful of students in 1994 to 118 participating students this year. Through DanceChance, PNB aims to enrich each student’s life with the study of classical ballet while nurturing a diverse and inclusive future of artists and enthusiasts for Pacific Northwest Ballet and the art form. DanceChance partners with 20 elementary schools within the Seattle Public Schools to invite students demonstrating the unique attributes for classical ballet to study at Pacific Northwest Ballet School free of charge.

118 DanceChance students and their families attended Family Engagement Day where they enjoyed drumming and movement classes, a costume shop tour, and observation of Pinocchio rehearsals. This event gave families a chance to learn together and share dance as a family affair.
42 DanceChance students and alumni had the magnificent opportunity to perform in The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the School production of Pinocchio this season. Performing with the Company provides students a first-hand look into what a professional dance career.
This spring, DanceChance third and fourth graders enjoyed vivacious and high-energy hip hop masterclasses taught by talented guest instructor Sam Picart.
DanceChance students and their families had the very special opportunity to observe the Dance Theatre of Harlem’s company class, taught by PNBS and DanceChance faculty member Giovanni Villalobos. This presented the chance for the students to see a diverse group of dancers working individually towards a collective goal.

[NO HOLDS]barre’d is a study of how dancers behave when they think they are not being watched. It is a small study on how ballet barres can be used in unconventional ways and inserted into context of a complete work, and an exploration of what can be achieved when anything is possible. The music is upbeat, the costumes are vibrant, and the movement is experimental and edgy, with classical ballet at the root of many of the concepts. It is a glimpse at the relationships between students, dancers, and friends in the context of both performance and studio space. — Kiyon

Saccade is inspired by Jackson Pollock’s Autumn Rhythm (Number 30). As this is the first piece I’ve created with a large cast, I’ve sought to use the optimal number of dancers to best capture the control and chaos I see in Pollock’s painting by conveying both uniformity and unique personality throughout the group. The term “saccade” refers to rapid movement of the eye between fixation points. My goal with Saccade is to cause the viewer to see many different things on stage, particularly the joy of being a young dancer, which I hope to capture along with the uniqueness of each individual. This is a talented ensemble of young dancers and I want to demonstrate the power I see in them as they work together towards a common goal. — Margaret
