Dance HAPPENS HERE
A GREAT SEASON IS LIKE A NEWLY DISCOVERED RECIPE INCORPORATING ALL OF THE FINEST INGREDIENTS, A FEW UNEXPECTED DELIGHTS, AND A LITTLE LOVE— RESULTING IN A SUMPTUOUS FEAST FOR ALL. Place your napkin on your lap or tie it around your neck because this smorgasbord is about to begin. What’s on the menu? Chef’s sampler of Balanchine best, new creations by Lang and Cerrudo, table for two under Montague, a twist of Tharp, a pop of Pite paired with a fine Wheeldon, and the most delicious confections of Coppélia. Trust me, you’ll want to make reservations for at least six sittings. For our opening program in September, we present Balanchine’s glittering masterpiece Jewels. Inspired by a stroll past the display windows of Van Cleef & Arpels on Fifth Avenue, Balanchine used French, American, and Russian influences to create a perfect concoction. This triple bill offers the perfect opportunity to savor the many strengths of PNB, from orchestra to costumes and tiaras plus some of the most sublime dancing you’ll ever see. As we head to the ballot in November, we reflect on the hard-fought battle for the right for so many to have a voice in our elections. Penny Saunders’ So to Speak commemorates the centenary of women’s right to vote. Sweet Fields, Twyla Tharp’s celebration of our human connections, is performed to uplifting American hymns sung by the Tudor Choir. Closing this inspired program is Jessica Lang’s world premiere, Stabat Mater. Jean-Christophe Maillot’s Roméo et Juliette shows passion, love, and loss in all of its awkwardness, agony, and awe. He is a master storyteller with a fresh lens on a classic tale. Juliet grabs Romeo for their first kiss, Lady Capulet embodies the power and conviction of her house, and the nurse is more mastermind than servant. Many of our dancers found their artistic voice in Maillot’s work. You won’t want to miss their return to these signature roles or thrilling debuts as new artists step into the limelight.

A PNB premiere by Christopher Wheeldon, a world premiere by Alejandro Cerrudo (his first as our new Resident Choreographer!), and a cult classic by Crystal Pite called Emergence. The bee’s knees! This program is the envy of every classical ballet company in America—okay, the world. Buy a ticket, trust me, or better yet, buy a subscription. This is PNB at its best. Mic drop. Coppélia is pure delight. Find yourself in a fairytale village with lifelike dolls, devilish pranks, 24 pristine baby ballerinas in pink tutus, and a score by Léo Delibes that will have the entire family dancing in the aisles. PNB’s singular production of this classic created by George Balanchine and Alexandra Danilova with winsome costumes and sets by Roberta Guidi di Bagno is pure golden treasure. Oh, and you may see me out there as Doctor Coppélius! The final program of the season spans almost one hundred years of American ballet opening with the iconic Apollo, created by Balanchine at the age of 25 in 1928. Fast forward to 2014 when another young Russian choreographer named Alexei Ratmansky created Pictures at an Exhibition on Balanchine’s New York City Ballet. Pictures is not only a wonder of invention, but also a nod to Balanchine’s legacy. Cerrudo’s haunting Silent Ghost completes this terrific trio of three timeless works. Catch it—catch the entire season. Make your reservation and join me in savoring the many discoveries and delights that are part of PNB’s 2020/21 season. BON APPÉTIT!
