Existing building is occupied by the University of Salford; used for offices and research (into energy).
Design elegantly combines abrupt angles with fluid curves. Achieves success materially, evoking calmness in the natural pallet of tones and textures. An aspect with strong relation to biophillic design. Alongside other principles for biophillic design, Materials play a strong part to this design. Window placement is considerate of users.
Footpaths Roads
Site
Linking to the sites history as the residence of James Prescott Joules - scientist who researched energy - the design concept orientates 'energy'. Existing in various meanings scientifically and spiritually. The curved design is inspired by the symbol of 'Unalome' - the journey of Ones path through life - a symbol of energy. Biophillic practices are explored for their positive energy, improving mental and physical well-being. I feel using natural materials is important, especially within an educational setting. The affects have proven to stimulate better grades, also encouraging rich biodiversity into the site allows learning through interaction.

- Class-bases as outlined in 'Area Guidelines for Mainstream Schools'; provide a better social learning environment for KS1 children
- Toilet cubicles on the second floor fit ergonomics of ks1 children. Other toilets appropriately coincide with standard dimensions - used by all users.
- One toilet cubicle per 10 pupils - ergonomically adjusted to suit user
- Ks1 table height at 500mm. Appropriate to user anthropometrics.
- Good visual and physical conconnection to outdoors - materials of ground floor continue between outside and inside bluring the barrier to access
- Teachers desks and chairs easily moveable - wheels at foot. Reducing back ache issues caused by bending as outlined in school design guidelines.
- In line with the 'School Outputs' guidelines, toilets and washbasins are visible from the class-bases (KS1)
Inspired by 'Porto Educadao'; partitions enable various layouts for the space; small spaces suit group learning. Glazing of mezzanine cantilever angled towards nature views; east window angled down towards private outdoor play area, whilst the west window is angled up to the sky and trees of the Acton (public) square.

Versatile space - third floor learning suite and adjacent north facing classroom can be used separately or as one learning space. - Relating to this as the space is not used for primary education purposes during summer months - the unspecific and moverability of these spaces allows the buidling to beused alternatively. i.e. daytime child care groups, local community events .

Flemish bond brick double-leaf masonry red brick - load-bearing. Concrete substructure. Welsh slate roof. Window frames vary in size and heights within floor levels. Proposal does not change existing faç ades. To comply with Grade II listing.
Damp visible in brickwork of basement. Roof covering failure - previous leak issues. - Proposal alters roof structure, issues will be resolved through this. Single glazed glass throughout windows - proposed addition for double glazing.
Steel 'H' columns in line with structural grid - within existing structure - provides support to additional loads carried through walls. Steel bracing - new structure - independent from existing structure. Load to be carried through columns

Environmental Analysis Sunset
Vegetation aligning with biophillic practices
Thermal comfort maintained through shading - timber slats provide summer sun shading without eliminating winter sun gain
Below third floor is shaded by surrounding buildings and trees. New steel and glazing structure received sun gain - thermal comfort = recessed glazing shaded by steel structure + site used during winter - light penetration during midday does not affect internal learning quality of spaces.
Sunrise
Views out - towards new vegetation of site, diffusing views of surrounding built environment Some shading is provided by recess of window to steel structure - user occupied mostly during winter
Natural air flow Automatically opening windows Air flow channels up through semi-open vertical access Noise and air pollution diffused by trees
Views of nature improves mental and physical health West prevailing wind buffered by site Surroundings

Environmental Qualities;
Fulfilment of Brief;
- Photovoltaic Solar Panels on roof orientated away from shadows cast by surrounding site - Increased site biodiversity, habitat creation and green space gain - through vegetation, bee bricks, bird and other insect habitats - Views out directed towards natural surroundings - following biophillic design principles - Automatic opening windows maintain thermal comfort - passive design - Locally sourced materials - to reduce carbon footprint of construction
Eco-learning through physical and visual connection with natural environment - growing spaces, habitat creation (bird houses, insect 'hotel'). Estimated carbon life cycle assumes building has potential to be carbon net zero. Materials have been chosen for their sustainability properties. Locally sourced where possible; reducing carbon life cycle of the building - aim towards carbon neutral Site will be predominantly used during winter months, because of this glazing has been favoured to maximise sun gain.
