American Ash

American White Oak

Ash wood has very good overall strength properties relative to its weight. It has excellent shock resistance, which takes some of the pain from those using hand tools and sports equipment. It steam bends very well, so is a favourite of furniture makers and hobbyists. Being very hard, stable when dry and easy to finish and stain, it is ideal for furniture and flooring.

American white oaks have excellent overall strength properties relative to weight, making them a preferred hardwood species for structural applications. The wood is hard and relatively heavy with good bending strength and compression strength but lower in stiffness. It has excellent steam bending capability. Being hard, stable when dry and easy to finish and stain, it is highly popular for furniture and flooring.

In general ash is a light coloured wood, with sapwood varying from white to yellow and heartwood light to dark brown, sometimes with lighter streaks. Ash wood is generally straight-grained with a coarse uniform texture. Its appearance has a very strong grain contrast between the softer summer growth and hard winter growth rings. No two pieces are ever the same in appearance.

Black Walnut

Walnut is tough, hard and of medium density. It has moderate bending and crushing strengths and is low in stiffness. It has good steam bending classification. The sapwood of walnut is creamy white, whereas the heartwood is light brown to dark chocolate brown, making the difference in colour quite distinct. Occasionally the heartwood has dark, even purple, streaks. The wood of walnut is generally straight grained, although sometimes with wavy or curly grain that produces its characteristic and attractive figure, sought after by designers.

European Ash Prime White

European Beech Paint Grade

European Ash has fairly good strength properties for its weight, and is also shock resistant. It produces good results with hand or machine tools. Responds well to steam bending. Glues, stains, and finishes well. It has a medium to coarse texture similar to oak. The grain is almost always straight and regular.

Beech is an important and widely-used hardwood in Europe. Its hardness, wear-resistance, strength, and excellent bending capabilities—coupled with its low price—make this hardwood a mainstay for many European woodworkers. Overall good workability; it machines well, and glues, finishes, and turns well. Beech also responds superbly to steambending. It does, however, have a large amount of movement in service, so movement and wood stability must be taken into account.

European Oak

European oak has been used for a wide variety of purposes for thousands of years, most obviously furniture making, home decoration and structural or architectural joinery. Aside from the obvious physical advantages, appearance is one of the major reasons oak wood is so desirable as a building material. It naturally possesses a pleasing golden colour that dries to a pleasant silvery tone over time or with air drying and a distinct visible grain that needs no staining or waxing to emphasise it, even on planed oak timber.

Idigbo

Poplar / Tulipwood

Derived from West Africa, Idigbo timber is a hardwood that has a strength and stiffness comparable to oak. Features a straight to irregular grain and a slightly coarse and uneven texture with a yellow-brown appearance.

This sustainably managed wood from natural forests of North America, with excellent environmental credentials, is a key species in many export markets. Its main uses are in furniture, doors, panelling, architectural interior joinery and mouldings and kitchen cabinets. It is also used in certain applications for construction and in some specialist applications such as carving. Poplar/Tulipwood can easily be stained and polished to a very good finish. The wood can be susceptible to movement in performance in humid conditions.

Iroko

Red Grandis

Iroko has a medium to coarse texture, with open pores and an interlocked grain. The wood is tough, dense, and very durable. It is often used in cabinetmaking and panelling as a substitute for teak, which it resembles both in colour (light brown to deep golden-brown) and in grain.

Red Grandis is a wood that varies in colour from pink to white cream to light rose but its claim to fame likely belongs to the fact that it is certifiably green. It is the trademarked name for hardwood from a plantation-grown Eucalyptus tree (Eucalyptus grandis) that boasts FSC certification. The wood is described as straight-grained, medium textured and available in excellent widths and lengths in lumber, veneer and plywood. Red grandis is being touted as a possible alternative for a variety of hardwoods, including mahogany and sapele.

Douglas fir is an exceptional and undervalued wood flooring species. Much maligned for its low score on the Janka hardness test, Douglas fir makes up for this with many other positive qualities. An excellent option for reclaimed wood flooring, Douglas fir hardwood flooring will add style and resale value to your home.

European redwood or Scandinavian redwood timber is yellowish-brown in colour, with reddish-brown growth rings. Featuring a straight, medium grain with an even texture, this is an attractive, durable option for most common woodworking projects.

Larch

Southern Yellow Pine

A wood species native to Bavaria, the Carpathians and the Swiss Alps, Larch has been steadily introduced all over Europe since the seventeenth century. Today, it is a main constituent of the biggest forest mass in the world: the Barorial forest of Finland and Russia.

The sapwood of Southern Yellow Pine varies in width, and is white to yellowish, even orange-white or pale yellow. The heartwood is light yellow to red-brown, and is resinous.

Tall and straight, reaching up to 45m in favourable conditions, Larch is the heaviest and hardest of European coniferous woods, developing best in mountainous regions with very cold winters. Although it is a conifer, Larch loses its needles in the autumn.

Western red cedar is a resilient and versatile species that can be used in a wide variety of exterior and interior building applications. It is one of the most valuable conifers owing to the unique colour, texture and durability of its wood. It grows at low to mid elevations along the BC coast and in wetter parts of the southern interior. It holds great spiritual significance for Indigenous peoples along the northwest Pacific Coast. BC is the only province that western red cedar grows. The beauty and dimensional stability of its wood make it an important commercial species.
