A YEAR IN THE LIFE MARGARET CHADWICK FOUNDED CHADWICK SCHOOL WITH A BOLD, FUTURE-FOCUSED EDUCATIONAL VISION THAT CONSIDERED A PIONEERING SPIRIT ESSENTIAL TO SUCCESS. This year has called for pioneering on every front, and your commitment and gifts have been more essential than ever to Chadwick’s success. Your generous donations to the Annual Fund support every aspect of K-12 student life at Chadwick. Whether through facilitating outstanding teaching and mentoring, providing extensive co-curricular opportunities or allowing Chadwick to enroll exceptional students regardless of their financial circumstances, the Annual Fund makes a vital difference. Thank you for your unwavering support of every student, every day. Several eagerly awaited campus projects were completed this year: the Center for Innovation and Research, which you can read more about on page 7; new baseball and softball fields; and a wonderful new Upper Village playground designed by students, for students. In addition, more than 350 solar panels were installed on the Geoffrey Alan Laverty Center for the Performing Arts, Pascoe Pavilion and Leavenworth Library, allowing Chadwick to generate its own power. This pioneering sustainability project represents a successful collaboration among students, parents, faculty, administrators and trustees over multiple years.
During the early weeks of the COVID-19 shutdown, the dedication and ingenuity of the entire Chadwick community were inspiring. Faculty and staff spent Spring Break redesigning curriculum delivery for virtual learning, with an eye toward innovation and maintaining hands-on experiences. Chadwick parent organizations found new ways to maintain school spirit, connect our community and raise money for a COVID-19 Emergency Fund. Chadwick alumni, including many working on the front lines of pandemic response, offered priceless expertise and support. And, for the Class of 2020, the Chadwick community joined forces to design a Commencement ceremony filled with Chadwick traditions but respecting public health mandates. Most importantly, Chadwick students met sudden change with courage and creativity. We could not be prouder of their resilience and character. For more than 80 years, the Chadwick community has risen to challenges with strength, grace and generosity, whether through a world war or a global pandemic. Thank you for all you do to make Chadwick a place of extraordinary opportunity and growth, now and into the future.

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
“It was only with the immense backing from Chadwick parents and the school community at large that our effective response to the pandemic was possible.” DAL SOHI
Dear Chadwick Community, When I reflect on the 2019-20 school year, my first year at Chadwick, I am extremely proud and humbled by the resilience, adaptability and resolve we have shown together. Thanks to each and every one of you, we were able to turn a very trying time into an example of strength and an opportunity for growth. We needed your support more than ever, and together, we rose to the challenge. Through the unwavering commitment of our parents, donors and volunteers, we were able to pivot and continue providing our students with the quality education they expect and deserve. The character and tenacity of our K-12 students during this unique year proved that, particularly in challenging times, they are a living embodiment of our Core Values. Our faculty and staff stepped up when they were needed most, going above and beyond to ensure students received the very best educational experience possible given the circumstances. It was only with the immense backing from Chadwick parents and the school community at large that our effective response to the pandemic was possible. Chadwick’s philanthropy, as celebrated in this Annual Report, is the gateway to exceptional student experiences. Despite the impact of COVID-19, our community contributed to a vibrant future for Chadwick School in every area.

The total raised for the 2019-20 Annual Fund was $1.844 million, and the total raised by the Chadwick Parents Association was $177,900. We are so grateful to the CPA, the Booster Club, Friends of the Library, the Limelighters and all our parents for their support. We are also grateful to the Thomson family for establishing the Thomson Endowment Fund for the Arts, which will provide direct support for Visual and Performing Arts programs and events. Other generous Chadwick donors sparked pride for our athletics program through the stunning renovation of our baseball and softball fields. I am also pleased to share that our Center for Innovation and Research (CIR) is ready for our students as soon as it is safe to bring them back to campus. The CIR will serve as an incredible learning space where conversations, ideas and plans unfold. The CIR will fuel STEM engagement for all K-12 students.
STEM
From hands-on experiences to formal presentations, K-12 students learn to analyze and apply new knowledge.
At the end of the 2019-20 school year, our country experienced a racial reckoning over long-standing injustices for the Black community, and our Chadwick campus was not immune. We heard your voices and are working diligently to ensure that our commitment to a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture is reflected not just in words and ideals, but through the real experiences of our students, faculty and community. That commitment is only possible through our collective partnership, and we’ve been so moved to see you rise to meet that challenge. There is much work to be done, and we must do it together. Lastly, I wish to send heartfelt congratulations to the Class of 2020, who demonstrated incredible resilience, character and support for one another. The Class of 2020 received 494 offers of admission from colleges across the country and are attending 67 different institutions, including many of the most selective research universities and liberal arts colleges, flagship state universities, engineering colleges and institutes, and top performing and visual arts colleges. We are so proud of all our Chadwick students, and we look forward to seeing what they will accomplish out in the world. Sincerely,
Daljit “Dal” Sohi Head of School 7
FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD to ensure that the Chadwick Mission, Strategic Plan, and financial reporting and management goals were met. In his first year, Dal exemplified leadership, character and strength as he guided teachers, staff, students and parents through a very challenging and unpredictable time for us all. His example of calmness, positivity and determination showed our community that the Chadwick spirit and Core Values are most valuable in times of uncertainty — and that together, we can get through anything. With the completion of Chadwick’s Center for Innovation and Research, we are excited to support the Chadwick leadership team, faculty and staff as they engage students in 21st-century skills, including STEM, research and critical and creative thinking. The year was also marked by a resounding call for racial equality. We support Chadwick’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and we were proud to welcome a diverse group of new members to our Board who will undoubtedly enrich our conversations, perspectives and approach moving forward. Dear Chadwick Friends, As we reflect back on the 2019-20 school year, the Roessler-Chadwick Foundation Board of Trustees is profoundly grateful to the entire Chadwick community for coming together during the very unexpected circumstances we faced in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to you, we were able to band together, pivot quickly and uphold our commitment to being a world-class school. The RCF Board was primarily focused on supporting Dal Sohi in his first year as Head of School, while continuing

RECOGNIZING ANNUAL GIVING All gifts to Chadwick School are greatly appreciated. Because Annual Giving contributions support Chadwick’s current operations and highest-priority needs each year, special recognition is afforded to donors who directly support Chadwick’s Annual Fund or Delphinus Operating Fund for Financial Aid, or who make restricted annual gifts to current operations. Recognition levels are determined by the total dollar amount of gifts, including employer matching gifts. Contributions to sponsor or underwrite events or to support parent organizations are not direct contributions to current operations and therefore are not included in Annual Giving recognition. Such contributions are recognized separately at the events or by the parent organizations. Gifts to endowed funds, including the general endowment, support the longterm growth of the school rather than current operations and are honored separately as well. In addition, this list celebrates consecutive years of giving by individuals. It is a testament to the loyalty and commitment of the Chadwick community that so many consistently support the school over multiple years. As with all our efforts to thank and recognize donors, every attempt has been made to ensure the accuracy of our information. If your records differ from ours, please contact the Development Office so we may update our files. Contributions from donors recognized here represent more than $2.78 million in Annual Giving to Chadwick in 2019–20. We are deeply grateful to all members of the Chadwick community who include Annual Giving to Chadwick in their philanthropic plans each year. Thank you!

2019–20 ANNUAL FUND
TOTAL GIVING TO THE ANNUAL FUND
$1.844 MILLION
All monies raised through the Chadwick Annual Fund are used to support the operating budget in the same academic year in which they are given. Thanks to the generosity of Annual Fund donors, Chadwick students enjoy enhanced opportunities in all areas of campus life and learning. We thank the following 2019–20 Annual Fund donors for their commitment to making every academic and co-curricular program at Chadwick 100-percent outstanding for our students. Chadwick relies on a committed group of volunteers to reach out to members of our community for their support of the Annual Fund. These volunteers write letters, make phone calls and assist with planning to help raise funds to support Chadwick’s students, faculty and programs. We are deeply grateful for their hard work, leadership and gifts of time to the school.

ANNUAL GIVING FROM ALUMNI For many alumni, gifts to Chadwick are opportunities to pay tribute to the school that has helped them become who they are today. Many also honor classmates and teachers and celebrate reunions and other special milestones with their giving. All alumni giving is directed through the Annual Fund to the Delphinus Operating Fund for Financial Aid, unless otherwise specified by the donor. We are extremely grateful to our alumni whose giving ensures that the Chadwick experience remains consistently exceptional for every student in every year.

2019–20 ENDOWMENT FUNDS The newly established Thomson Endowment Fund for the Arts will provide support to the Chadwick Performing and Visual Arts programs in perpetuity. (Learn more on pages 64 and 65.)
TOTAL ENDOWMENT
$35,908,766
Endowment funds are financial assets that generate income through effective investment of the principal. Portions of this income are used to relieve the operating budget, and when substantial enough, to help minimize tuition increases. Contributions may be made to existing funds, or new funds may be established through major gifts. Endowment funds are frequently established to honor or remember someone of significance to the school. We are especially grateful to those donors who have established the endowment funds that provide security for our future.

Many people have already made the decision to include Chadwick School in their family’s estate plans. Why? For some, it’s the lifelong memories built while spending time on the Chadwick campus. For others, it’s the desire to ensure that the Chadwick legacy remains strong for future generations. Regardless of the reason, the benefits of making a planned gift and thereby joining the Johnson Legacy Society remain the same: a strong financial future for Chadwick and significant tax benefits for the donor and their family. MAKING AN IMPACT ON THE ARTS
MICHAEL, LAUREN ’19 AND NICHOLAS ’16 THOMSON JOHNSON LEGACY SOCIETY MEMBERS
“It all starts and ends with Kathy,” Michael Thomson responded when asked why his family chose to start the Thomson Endowment Fund for the Arts at Chadwick, which will provide programmatic support to both the Visual and Performing Arts Departments in perpetuity. “In fact, the arts endowment was her idea,” he said of his late wife, who passed away following a brain aneurysm in 2017. Kathy, a media executive and member of the Young Presidents Organization, previously led a YPO retreat focused on living an intentional life. Unbeknownst to Michael, one of the exercises included writing a personal eulogy as a way to identify values and goals. A friend from the retreat contacted Michael posthumously, suggesting he retrieve Kathy’s self-reflection from her computer. To Michael’s surprise, Kathy ended her eulogy by asking that memorial gifts be made to “The Thomson Fund for the Arts.” “We had never discussed creating a fund like that,” Michael said, “but it gave our family a very clear message about what she wanted. Kathy deeply believed in living with intention. She put this idea into the universe.”
“We were immediately impressed with the teachers, student ambassadors and Head of School Ted Hill,” said Michael. “We knew that Chadwick was a place where our children would thrive and be challenged.”
Establishing the arts endowment at Chadwick felt like the perfect way to honor her. “Kathy was an art lover; culture was always front and center for her,” Michael said. “And we both loved Chadwick and appreciated the experiences our children had here, educationally and artistically.”
After hearing about Chadwick’s Outdoor Education program, they were even more enthusiastic. Kathy grew up in Utah as an avid skier and runner, and like Margaret Chadwick, believed the outdoors provides an exceptional setting for experiential learning.
The Thomsons’ journey to Chadwick began when they realized that their son, Nicholas ’16, was being lost in the shuffle at their local middle school. Kathy’s mother was a teacher, so education had always been a priority for their family. After speaking with other parents, they quickly focused on Chadwick.

“Chadwick is committed to giving kids varied experiences and encouraging them to try new things,” said Michael. “Kathy believed in everything Chadwick embodied. She was always aware that she could learn from anyone she met or any experience.” Both Nicholas and Lauren were athletes while attending Chadwick. Nicholas ran cross-country, played soccer
(Left to right) Michael, Lauren ’19 and Nicholas Thomson ’16
and experimented with various spring sports, while Lauren focused on water polo. As a result, Michael met several Booster Club members who have become lasting friends. Two of his favorite fan memories include “the thrill of watching Nicholas run a sub-5-minute mile” and cheering on Lauren and the girls water polo team in a “fierce” playoff match in Santa Barbara. The siblings also excelled in the arts. Nicholas embraced theater, participating in improvisational theater with the ChImps and acting in several Upper School plays. “I’ll never forget seeing Nicholas as Paris in [Chadwick’s production of] ‘Romeo and Juliet’ during the 2016 CETA Festival,” Michael said. “It was an incredible show, and the audience loved it.” Nicholas graduated from Lehigh University in 2020 and aspires to a career in politics. He is currently living and working in Washington, D.C. Lauren loved studio art and singing in Chadwick’s choruses throughout her years on campus. Michael recalled how proud he was when Lauren performed at Carnegie Hall with Chadwick’s Upper School Chorus. Along with other student-artists, Lauren’s work is showcased in the Roessler Hall rotunda. She matriculated at Tulane University after graduating from Chadwick.
Among his best Chadwick memories, Michael noted “all the gut-wrenching laughter” he and Kathy shared at Family Trivia Night, as well as celebrating Nicholas’ return from the Senior Trip as a family. Michael credits Chadwick with helping his children become resilient and creative thinkers, as well as global citizens who appreciate other cultures. Nicholas traveled to Vietnam, Thailand and Africa with Chadwick’s Community Service program, and both siblings enjoyed Chadwick’s spring theater trips. Lauren also studied Spanish in Salamanca, Spain. “Both kids are very independent and comfortable in new environments,” said Michael. While a Chadwick parent, Michael was a regular Annual Fund volunteer. “It seemed like an easy way to support the school,” he said, noting how grateful he is for the mentoring Nicholas and Lauren received from their teachers, coaches and counselors. He also appreciates the myriad Chadwick traditions that connect the community. “Chadwick puts a lot of effort into building community,” said Michael. “It’s a special place for kids — it’s home. Establishing the arts endowment creates a long-lasting bridge to the school for our family, and a place where Kathy’s impact on others will continue to reverberate.”

CHADWICK SCHOOL GOLF TOURNAMENT Thank you for making the 11th Annual Chadwick Golf Tournament such an enormous success! We were delighted to welcome 165 guests — including 124 golfers — comprised of trustees, volunteers, alumni, students, parents, past parents and friends. The event raised more than $124,000, including $47,000 during the “Fund-a-Need” live auction, to outfit Chadwick’s Center for Innovation and Research with new equipment and tools designed to develop 21stcentury skills in our students. We would like to especially thank the tournament co-chairs, Ian Eddleston, Van Hess and Paul Chen, and the committee members for their dedicated leadership that made the event a wonderful day for all! CHADWICK PARENTS ORGANIZATION
The Chadwick Parents Association (CPA) is an organization of all parents of Chadwick students. Its purpose is, broadly, to support the school and the school community. The CPA coordinates Village Room Parents and Middle and Upper School Parent Representatives, supports parents and families by helping parents become better acquainted, raises funds to support Chadwick, and helps foster and improve communications between parents and the school. The CPA organizes myriad events and activities throughout the grade levels and the school. Numerous volunteers donate thousands of hours to enhance the Chadwick experience for all students through the CPA. Each year, the CPA raises funds in support of the school, primarily through its annual Spring Event. The CPA gifted $177,900 to Chadwick in 2019–20, despite the huge challenge of reimagining the Spring Event due to COVID-19. With the dinner and auction only weeks away, Spring Event Co-Chairs Nikki Lennertz and Lori Penix created a tremendously successful digital fundraiser. The CPA designated their 2019-20 gift to the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund, providing flexibility and resources in support of Chadwick families and hourly staff impacted by the COVID-19 economic downturn and Stay at Home mandate. We are truly appreciative of the Chadwick Parents Association for this and all the ways it strengthens our school community.

Additionally, the CPA actively supports these programs:
Global Opportunities Chadwick provides a student exchange program with the Chadwick International campus. The CPA helps mobilize host families comprised of K–12 Chadwick parents. The student exchanges between campuses provide immersive, memorable experiences.
The STEM Team Chadwick’s STEM program is a multidisciplinary K–12 initiative that inspires and prepares students to think, do and lead in an increasingly global and technological marketplace. Parents volunteer as drivers for math, science and robotics competitions, and assist with makerspace activities.
Visual Arts Squad The Visual Arts Squad is comprised of K–12 parent volunteers who believe that a strong arts education is a sound investment in the overall development of our students. Members support the department throughout the year, donating their time and resources to enhance the program. Opportunities for involvement include assisting with hospitality at art shows, coordinating the department’s donations for the Spring Event, promoting programs and events, and more. 69

Friends of the Library (FOL) seeks to enhance the education of all Chadwick students by funding the library’s programs and augmenting library and teacher resources. In addition to providing financial resources, FOL members sponsor visiting authors and illustrators, manage the Book Talks and Sneak Peek programs, organize and manage the Village School PALs library volunteers program, work with the Community Service program on literacy projects and organize the keenly anticipated Chadwick Book Fair. They give countless volunteer hours each year to support and enhance library and literacy programs in Grades K–12. In 2019–20, the FOL funded a significant amount of classroom materials through their Donations and Acquisitions program, as well as books for Chadwick book clubs and the Battle of the Books program. The organization also underwrote visits by nationally renowned authors Jessica Day George, Nic Stone, Kathryn Otashi and Chris Grabenstein. In collaboration with the Community Service program, FOL provided resources for Get Lit, a popular spoken-word poetry curriculum. Finally, the FOL provided additional resources in support of Chadwick’s new Center for Innovation and Research. Chadwick gratefully acknowledges the Friends of the Library for their support of the school and its library programs.

From helping to bring visiting artists to campus and raising funds, to ushering at performances and feeding hungry performers, Limelighters volunteers work tirelessly to promote the shared joy of the arts to all Chadwick students and families. In 2019–20, the Limelighters supported the Performing Arts program by covering the full cost for all meals for students and staff across every performing arts discipline during auditions, rehearsals and performances. We gratefully acknowledge all of the Limelighters members for their generous support of the performing arts at Chadwick School.
