Chadwick School — Renew, Reimagine, Reconnect The 2020-21 school year was marked by remarkable ingenuity, connections strengthened despite distances and an even deeper sense of gratitude for you — the members of our shared community. You are Chadwick’s everyday heroes, rising to meet unprecedented challenges with optimism, leadership, creativity, grit and grace. So many people stepped forward to make this happen — students, families, alumni, trustees, faculty and staff, dedicated their time and talents to creating an unforgettable year. Throughout the year, you worked to keep Chadwick’s spirit vibrant. Together, we found solutions that met current needs, and often, allowed for greater participation. Streaming concerts, virtual book clubs and cooking shows, and discussions with experts in their fields were highlights this year. Through technology, alumni and friends near and far were enriched by the joy and vitality of our student body.

“Learning by doing” has taken on new meaning this year, with resiliency and Chadwick’s Core Values more essential than ever. We are so proud of our shared community, and especially our students, who have embodied those values. Your gifts, big and small, to the Annual Fund, financial aid and other school priorities this year provided the bedrock of support necessary to provide an outstanding educational experience for Chadwick students, even in an uncertain time. We are deeply grateful for your commitment to Chadwick School and its students. We are delighted to celebrate and recognize the generous support of the Chadwick community in this 2020-21 Annual Report. We look forward to a bright future together.

From the Chair of the Board Dear Chadwick Community, This year’s Annual Report theme of “Renew, Reimagine and Reconnect” is a great way to acknowledge the tremendous resilience, collaboration and innovation with which the Chadwick School community has delivered on our Mission. It is this collective commitment to developing global citizens with keen minds, exemplary character, self-knowledge and the ability to lead that has been the enduring foundation of our 86 years of success and will be key to our success in the next century. On behalf of the Roessler-Chadwick Foundation (RCF) Board of Trustees, I would like to thank all of our K–12 students, families, faculty and staff for their hard work and support during one of our most challenging years. I would also like to congratulate the 94 members of the Class of 2021. In the spirit of Chadwick innovation, Commencement was held on Commander Field for the first time in school history. It was truly a privilege to attend in person, and the field allowed us to connect while maintaining physical distance guidelines. Welcome, Class of 2021, to our amazing alumni community! Even amid the COVID-19 operational adjustments this year, community members continued to invest in the Chadwick educational experience for all our students. Thanks to your support, we raised $1.5 million for the 2020–21 Annual Fund, representing a 72 percent overall family participation rate. We are also very grateful to the Lichtenstein family, who generously contributed $1.5 million to fund the renovation of Chadwick’s baseball and softball field, now named Lichtenstein Family Field, and the construction of the Center for Innovation and Research.

During the 2020–21 school year, one of the RCF Board’s primary roles was ensuring that Chadwick remained focused on the Mission, Strategic Plan, financial strength and leadership of the school. We are excited to welcome Interim Head of School Tom Sheppard, who will pave the way for the Board’s hiring of a new Head of School, who will start in 2023. I end my term as Chair of the RCF Board with great humility and gratitude for the opportunity to serve Chadwick over these past few years. I am excited to pass the baton to Eden Warner, the incoming 2021–22 Chair, who will continue the Board’s important work in planning for Chadwick’s long-term success. Thank you for your continued dedication to our Mission, our Core Values and, most importantly, our students. Sincerely,

Velveth Schmitz 2020–2021 Chair of the Board Roessler-Chadwick Foundation

Joy, camaraderie and renewed appreciation for each special Chadwick moment filled the campus as the Chadwick community celebrated the return to K-12 in-person learning last spring. Students and teachers brought shared purpose, enthusiasm and resilience to Chadwick’s classrooms. Athletic teams, performers and visual artists alike reveled in renewed opportunities for face-to-face collaboration. The return of Chadwick traditions, including Village School promotion ceremonies, the Senior Trip, the Middle School End-of-Year Celebration, the CPA Spring Event and Commencement combined to create a memorable conclusion to a uniquely challenging year.

Recognizing Annual Giving All gifts to Chadwick School are greatly appreciated. Because Annual Giving contributions support Chadwick’s current operations and highest-priority needs each year, special recognition is afforded to donors who directly support Chadwick’s Annual Fund or Delphinus Operating Fund for Financial Aid, or who make restricted annual gifts to current operations. Recognition levels are determined by the total dollar amount of gifts, including employer matching gifts. Contributions to sponsor or underwrite events or to support parent organizations are not direct contributions to current operations, and therefore are not included in Annual Giving recognition. Such contributions are recognized separately at the events or by the parent organizations. Gifts to endowed funds, including the general endowment, support the long-term growth of the school rather than current operations and are honored separately as well. In addition, this list celebrates consecutive years of giving by individuals. It is a testament to the loyalty and commitment of the Chadwick community that so many consistently support the school over multiple years. As with all our efforts to thank and recognize donors, every attempt has been made to ensure the accuracy of our information. If your records differ from ours, please contact the Development Office so we can update our files. Contributions from donors recognized here represent more than $2 million in Annual Giving to Chadwick in 2020–21. We are deeply grateful to all members of the Chadwick community who include Annual Giving to Chadwick in their philanthropic plans each year. Thank you!

Theater students and faculty reimagined major productions of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and ‘We Will Rock You’ as innovative virtual performances. Innovation was front and center throughout the 2020-21 school year. Students, faculty and staff, alumni, parents, Chadwick administration and Board of Trustees collaborated to develop creative ways to learn, connect and thrive across distances. Streaming theater performances at local cinemas and drive-in theaters; Zoom-based sixth-grade Socratic Seminars; student discussions with nationally known authors, experts, activists and artists; and a cornucopia of virtual alumni experiences helped the Chadwick community weather the pandemic storm. Many of these new initiatives will continue to benefit the Chadwick community going forward.

Annual Fund

TOTAL GIVING TO THE ANNUAL FUND

$1.5 MILLION

All monies raised through the Chadwick Annual Fund are used to support the operating budget in the same academic year in which they are given. Thanks to the generosity of Annual Fund donors, Chadwick students enjoy enhanced opportunities in all areas of campus life and learning. We thank the following 2020–21 Annual Fund donors for their commitment to making every academic and co-curricular program at Chadwick outstanding for our students. Chadwick relies on a committed group of volunteers to reach out to members of our community for their support of the Annual Fund. These volunteers write letters, make phone calls and assist with planning to help raise funds to support Chadwick’s students, faculty and programs. We are deeply grateful for their hard work, leadership and gifts of time to the school.

Mathematics Teacher Dina ElGhitany clarifies a solution.

Assistant Head of School Elizabeth Imende-Cooney welcomed 2020 alumni back to campus.

At its core, Chadwick is all about relationships. Small classes foster strong, often lifelong friendships. Respectful and impactful relationships between students and their campus mentors enrich Chadwick students. Engaged and active alumni work to advance the school and support each other through collaboration. Dedicated families, parent volunteers, committed partners and special friends of Chadwick provide a bedrock of support for Chadwick’s current and future advancement. Never have the connections within the Chadwick community been more important than in 2020 and 2021. Thank you for all you have done, and continue to do, in support of Chadwick students, now and into the future.

ANNUAL GIVING FROM ALUMNI For many alumni, gifts to Chadwick are opportunities to pay tribute to the school that has helped them become who they are today. Many also honor classmates and teachers and celebrate reunions and other special milestones with their giving. All alumni giving is directed through the Annual Fund to the Delphinus Operating Fund for Financial Aid unless otherwise specified by the donor. We are extremely grateful to our alumni whose giving ensures that the Chadwick experience remains consistently exceptional for every student in every year.

CHADWICK DAY OF GIVING Thanks to the efforts of our dedicated alumni, Chadwick conducted its most successful Day of Giving yet. Together, Chadwick alumni raised more than $73,000 to support financial aid. With gifts from nearly 300 alumni, we handily surpassed our goal of 250 donors to earn a $10,000 matching challenge gift. Special congratulations to the Chadwick Class of 2013, which won the Day of Giving Young Alumni Challenge by recruiting the most donors of any alumni class from 2010 through 2020. A hearty shout-out to the Class of 1990 as well, which had the highest number of donors among all alumni class years. On behalf of all the students and teachers at Chadwick, thank you for supporting the outstanding educational experience of hundreds of students every day.

Save the date for Chadwick’s next Annual Day of Giving: March 16, 2022.

REIMAGINE “ This past year I was able to reimagine what my Chadwick experience could be like. I have become more grateful for the opportunities here, especially getting to participate in the fall play.” — J osh Goodloe, Class of 2022

$45,271,470

Endowment funds are financial assets that generate income through effective investment of the principal. Portions of this income are used to relieve the operating budget, and when substantial enough, to help minimize tuition increases. Contributions may be made to existing funds, or new funds may be established through major gifts. Endowment funds are frequently established to honor or remember someone of significance to the school. We are especially grateful to those donors who have established the endowment funds that provide security for our future.

George M. Goodwin, Ph.D. ’66 A NEW BOOK FUND TO BENEFIT STUDENTS

George M. Goodwin, Class of 1966, attended Chadwick for only his last two years of high school. Nevertheless, he believes that the school’s impact upon his life and career has been immense. George had attended a public high school in West Los Angeles, but he and his parents thought that he could do even better at a private school. In 1964, however, Chadwick was one of a few in Southern California that welcomed Jewish students. Thus, he became a boarder and soon established close friendships with many boarding and day students that flourish to this day.

62

One of George’s favorite teachers was P. G. Lee, who taught American history and encouraged his fascination with political cartoons. Eventually, George drew about 80, which were hung around P.G.’s classroom in Roessler Hall. Leland Mothershead, an English teacher, arranged for George to meet Paul Conrad, the Pulitzer Prizewinning cartoonist for the Los Angeles Times, when he spoke in Palos Verdes. George also much enjoyed Bill Hamner, an artist who also taught art history. In addition to studying the works of old and modern masters, George created many terra cotta sculptures. He also drew

a portrait of Bruce Hutchinson, Chadwick’s college counselor, which he hung in his office. George earned his bachelor’s degree at Lake Forest, a highly experimental college near Chicago. He majored in art history and spent an extraordinary part of his junior year in Florence. Having studied French at Chadwick and Italian in college, he also took German to prepare for graduate studies. Having begun to perceive himself as an educator, he earned a secondary teaching credential while an undergraduate. For three summers, he studied drawing, painting, and sculpture at Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. George completed his master’s degree in art history at Columbia in 1971 and four years later earned his Ph.D. in education at Stanford. Although his dissertation focused on art museums, he later taught art history at many colleges in Southern California, including two campuses of the Cal State system, UCLA Extension, and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He also became an interviewer in UCLA’s Oral History Program, documenting the lives of numerous artists, collectors, dealers, and museum officials. Meanwhile, George launched another of his passions, collecting folk art from around the world. Most pieces are ceramic and wooden sculptures from Mexico, but he and his wife, Betsey, have acquired paintings, prints, pottery, masks, carpets, and wall hangings from many other cultures. They have also been fortunate to travel extensively — especially within Italy — but elsewhere in Europe as well as in Mexico, Japan, Israel, and Egypt. And George has mounted about 40,000 of his photos in nearly 100 albums, which are shelved, along with thousands of books, within the Goodwin family’s remarkable Arts and Crafts bungalow in Providence, Rhode Island.

In 1985, having expanded his academic and professional interests, George earned two more master’s degrees: one in Jewish studies at Hebrew Union College, the Reform seminary in Los Angeles, and another in public administration at neighboring USC. In 2010, partially based on his leadership of Jewish philanthropies, he received an honorary doctorate from HUC. For more than 35 years, George has written extensively about American Jewish history. In addition to publishing journal, encyclopedia, and newspaper articles, he coedited an anthology, The Jews of Rhode Island, for Brandeis University Press. His 18-year editorship of an annual journal, Rhode Island Jewish Historical Notes, has thus far resulted in more than 3,600 pages of texts and photos. Among numerous trusteeships, he has served on the board of the Rhode Island Historical Society for a dozen years. In 2020, in recognition of his continuing curiosity, creativity, and scholarship, George received the Prof. Richard W. Hankte Award for Lifelong Learning from Lake Forest College. He recently wrote a profile of Franz Schulze, his favorite art history professor, for a posthumous exhibition of his drawings. George has always made an annual gift to Chadwick, occasionally donated books to its library, and has enjoyed attending many reunions. This year, considering how much Chadwick helped nurture and propel his love of learning, he was pleased to establish an endowed book fund for the Leavenworth Library. He hopes that it will enable and encourage generations of students to enjoy a worldly view of art and history. Given Chadwick’s importance in their lives and their children’s, George and Betsey have also planned a bequest to honor Chadwick’s extraordinary impact.

George M. Goodwin, Ph.D., Class of 1966 Book Fund Boosts Art Book Acquisition Due to the foresight and generosity of George Goodwin, Ph.D. ’66, aspiring Chadwick visual artists and art historians will benefit from the establishment of the George M. Goodwin, Ph.D., Class of 1966 Book Fund. Each year, Chadwick School will draw an agreed-upon amount from the restricted fund to purchase books primarily for Upper School students of art and art history. The gift is welcomed by the Visual Arts Department faculty, which uses books with high-quality prints of artwork in its classes. “We’re grateful to have this new fund to support our Visual Arts students. Especially in this age of technology, it is so valuable to have hands-on visual references. The analog process of experiencing books allows the students to slow down and fully absorb information and inspiration from myriad historical and contemporary artists from across the globe,” said Visual Arts Department Chair Annie Webster.

REIMAGINE “ In the year of distance learning, we constantly had to intentionally and aggressively reimagine the best version of Chadwick and the best version of ourselves and carry it with us at all times, as a charm against fear, despair, hopelessness and exhaustion. Now that we are back on campus let us not forget that vision and path forward, for therein lies the survival, continuity and health of the institution imagined and created by Margaret Chadwick.” — Angie Nevárez, Global Languages Department Chair; Spanish Teacher; Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Coordinator; Middle School Round Square Coordinator

Frances J. and Frank L. Johnson Legacy Society Many people have already made the decision to include Chadwick School in their family’s estate plans. Why? For some, it’s the lifelong memories built while spending time on the Chadwick campus. For others, it’s the desire to ensure that the Chadwick legacy remains strong for future generations. Regardless of the reason, the benefits of making a planned gift and thereby joining the Johnson Legacy Society remain the same: a strong financial future for Chadwick and significant tax benefits for the donor and their family. CHADWICK PARENTS ORGANIZATION The Chadwick Parents Association (CPA) is an organization made up of all parents of Chadwick students. Its broad purpose is to support the school and the school community. The CPA coordinates Village Room Parents and Middle and Upper School Parent Representatives, benefits parents and families by helping parents become better acquainted, raises funds to support Chadwick, and helps foster and improve communications between parents and the school. The CPA organizes myriad events and activities throughout the grade levels and the school. Numerous volunteers donate thousands of hours to enhance the Chadwick experience for all students through the CPA. Each year, the CPA raises funds in support of the school, primarily through its annual Spring Event. Following its lighthearted Family Feud event on campus, the CPA gifted $145,000 to Chadwick in 2020–21. The CPA designated its gift to a Faculty Wish List Fund, which will provide Chadwick faculty with the “extras” that will help enhance their teaching and the student experience. We are truly appreciative of the Chadwick Parents Association for all the ways it strengthens our school community.

Additionally, the CPA actively supports these programs:

DEI

Chadwick proudly supports diversity, equity and inclusion in our community by encouraging the development of parent affinity and allies groups. These groups provide safe spaces for families who share a common identity with others in the Chadwick community. All Chadwick affinity groups are inclusive and welcoming environments for allies and other community members who wish to be supportive. Three groups are now operating under the Chadwick Parents Association, and plans are underway to develop more.

Global Opportunities

Chadwick provides a student exchange program with the Chadwick International campus in Songdo, South Korea. The CPA helps mobilize host families comprised of K–12 Chadwick parents. The student exchanges between campuses provide immersive, memorable experiences for students and families.

The STEM Team

Chadwick’s STEM program is a multidisciplinary K–12 initiative that inspires and prepares students to think, do and lead in an increasingly global and technological marketplace. Parents volunteer as drivers for math, science and robotics competitions, and assist with makerspace activities.

Visual Arts Squad

The Visual Arts Squad is comprised of K–12 parent volunteers who believe that strong arts education is a sound investment in the overall development of our students. Members support the department throughout the year, donating their time and resources to enhance the program. Opportunities for involvement include assisting with hospitality at art shows, coordinating the department’s donations for the Spring Event, promoting programs and events and more.

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY Friends of the Library (FOL) seeks to enhance the education of all Chadwick students by funding the library’s programs and augmenting library and teacher resources. In addition to providing financial resources, FOL members sponsor visiting authors and illustrators, manage the Book Talks and Sneak Peek programs, organize and manage the Village School PALs library volunteers program, work with the Community Service program on literacy projects, and organize the keenly anticipated Chadwick Book Fairs. They give countless volunteer hours each year to support and enhance library and literacy programs in Grades K–12. In 2020–21, the FOL reinvented traditional events such as the Book Fairs, Book Talks and author visits as successful virtual events. FOL underwrote virtual visits by renowned authors including Gene Yang, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Chris Grabenstein and Nic Stone, allowing Chadwick students insight into the creative process and diverse perspectives. They also founded the well-received Parent Book Club to build community, recruiting faculty members to moderate discussions on the chosen books. Additionally, the FOL funded a significant amount of classroom materials through their Donations and Acquisitions program. Chadwick gratefully acknowledges the Friends of the Library for their support of the school and its library and literacy programs.

CHADWICK BOOSTER CLUB The Booster Club’s purpose is to support and promote the athletic objectives and programs of Chadwick School, including sports teams in the Middle and Upper Schools and physical education in the Village School. Throughout the year, the Booster Club promotes attendance at all sporting events, recruits sports representatives for every team, organizes spirit days, sells spirit wear and, in non-pandemic years, hosts the Chili Cook-Off. The Booster Club works hard to encourage the entire K–12 community to participate in Chadwick’s community-building athletic traditions. In 2020–21, the Booster Club organized 52 individual banners for Chadwick’s senior athletes, creating an eye-catching campus display that celebrated the character and commitment each athlete contributed to the Chadwick community. In addition, the Booster Club continued to sell Chadwick spirit gear online, keeping fans and families decked out in Chadwick blue. Chadwick gratefully acknowledges the Booster Club for its tireless work on behalf of the school’s athletics and team sports.

CHADWICK PERFORMING ARTS LIMELIGHTERS The Limelighters work directly with the Chadwick Performing Arts Department to provide organizational and financial support for as many as 50 performances each year. The Limelighters support K–12 students as they immerse themselves in chorus, dance, improvisational theater, orchestra, stagecraft, stage management and theater. They provide rehearsal meals, fan “telegrams,” refreshments and volunteer ushers; they also assist with special projects on an as-needed basis. During the 2020–21 academic year, the Limelighters assisted with the execution of an interactive drive-in movie experience for the Fall play. The group also helped fund equipment for students to film individual performances from home during the pandemic and assisted with an on-campus outdoor screening of the Spring Dance concert. In recent years, the Limelighters have donated much-needed items to the Performing Arts Department, ranging from specific equipment (tripods, TV stands, monitors, a DigiDolly and a skeleton) to larger needs, including a new communications system. We gratefully acknowledge all the Limelighters members for their generous support of the performing arts at Chadwick School.
