When Marg aret Chadwick founded Chadwick School on the principles of self-discovery, character development, outdoor education, the courage to lead and service to others, it is unlikely she could foresee what was to come decades later — an unparalleled program and community, matured yet still grounded in her vision. This year’s Annual Report focuses on the Chadwick legacy and Chadwick’s legacy families. Many of our Chadwick students have gone on to send their children and their children’s children to Chadwick School, aiming to give their offspring the same benefits they received from the school, programs and offshoots of Mrs. Chadwick’s founding principles. When interviewing our legacy families for this issue, we found that their memories and the programs they value overlapped, regardless of the decade they attended. And all were still closely connected with friends and teachers from their time at Chadwick. A Chadwick education means lifetime membership in the Chadwick family. The school is grateful for your contribution to maintaining all that makes Chadwick unique. We know Margaret Chadwick would treasure the relationships that have been formed and the ever-evolving actualization of her vision — her Chadwick legacy — which are only possible due to the generosity and volunteerism of those listed in this book.

Of all the Chadwick legacies, the Rosental-Biedenweg-Goodloe tale might be the most captivating, if not a little tricky to keep straight. Ann ’81 spent fifth grade to graduation at Chadwick, while her sister, Lucy Rosental Goodloe ’91, and half-sister, Rachel Rosental Blum ’89, were Chadwick WOWs. Although most of her classmates had been together since kindergarten, Ann immediately felt accepted when she entered Chadwick in fifth grade. “I felt this warm connection. They just brought me in,” she said. While earning her teaching credential at Cal State Long Beach, preparing to teach science, Ann’s younger sister told her about this “funky” science teacher at Chadwick — Doug Biedenweg. “Lucy and her friend set us up on a blind date. His first words to me were, ‘I guess we gotta go out.’ How romantic! But the joke was on Lucy,” Ann said. Ann and Doug married on campus in 1990, and their two children, Peter ’13 and Jana ’16, became Chadwick WOWs. Ann has continued to teach science in the Village School since 1993. Sending their children to Chadwick wasn’t a discussion for Ann and Doug, “it was just understood. We both had such a deep connection,” Ann said. “I was already working here when I got pregnant with Peter. I’m surprised I didn’t give birth in the amphitheater!”

7

For Lucy Goodloe, her time at Chadwick “set the bar really high” in maintaining a strong work ethic, developing critical-thinking skills and working well with others. Now a registered nurse at a Long Beach school, Lucy can still vividly recall memories from the J V volleyball team (Doug was her coach), “phenomenal” outdoor education trips and their senior prank — driving a car into Roessler. Lucy and her husband, Goodie Goodloe, have their two children at Chadwick, Hannah ’20 and Josh ’22. “Chadwick is truly what everyone says — a community,” Hannah said. “Throughout my time here, I have had many meaningful, lasting friendships. Chadwick has, in part, shaped me into who I am today. From the people I hang out with to the things I learn and the classes I take, I believe I am a better person because I go to Chadwick.” For Jana, the close-knit community she found at Chadwick still exists today, as she finishes her time at Pitzer College. “I have found that no one can replace a friend you’ve been around since you were 5. Two fellow WOWs from my class attend the same college as me, and at this point, we have gone to school together for 17 years. Those are irreplaceable relationships that are foundational to who I am today.”

For Y vonne russell Sopp ’89 and Ken Sopp ’89, sending their daughters to Chadwick School was never really a question. It’s where the couple met and fell in love, it’s where Yvonne’s mom taught for decades, and it’s where they met some of their closest friends. “It was just obvious to us. We love the family environment, we love the sense of community. I got so much out of the outdoor education program,” Yvonne said. “I grew up part of the Chadwick family. For me, it was very idyllic.” “Even now,” Ken said, “It feels like home.” Yvonne started at Chadwick in kindergarten, following in her older sister Michelle’s footsteps; their mom, Judy Russell, was a Village School teacher before Yvonne was born. Ken joined in seventh grade, following his older sister, Tracy ’86. His younger sister, Emily ’99, would attend 10 years after. When they were juniors in high school, Yvonne and Ken’s friendship blossomed. Yvonne: “We started dating the very beginning of junior year.” Ken: “In Mrs. Stevens’ class.” “I didn’t remember that.” “That’s when I asked her out.” “He said, ‘Are you doing anything tonight?’ I said I had to check. Later, I left a note on his car that I was free, and we went to a movie.” The couple continued to date long-distance while Yvonne attended UCLA and Ken went to Northwestern, and later married.

1962–63 Mr. and Mrs. Chadwick officially retire from the school.

“ Even now, it feels like home.”   — Ken Sopp ’89 What Yvonne and Ken loved about Chadwick when they attended hadn’t changed when they explored the school for their daughters, Katie ’17 and Allie ’18. “I love that you can be everything. You can be the theater kid without being the theater geek. You’re not pigeonholed,” Yvonne said. “At another school, the route you take is the route. I love that you can be it all and do it all.” Ken noted the close relationships they had with their teachers, 10 of whom were still teaching at Chadwick when they enrolled Katie in kindergarten. “I loved the personal attention you received as a student,” he said. “You felt like you really knew your teachers, and they really did care about you,” Yvonne said. Katie, who now attends Vanderbilt University, loved Chadwick’s small class size, “You know everyone in your grade, and you feel comfortable talking to anyone.” Allie, now a Washington University student, noted that her grade had only 63 students, which unified them even more. “Everyone really had each other’s back. And the student-teacher relationships are one-of-a-kind. It’s rare to see your teachers as more than teachers.” So, will there be another Sopp generation at Chadwick in the future? Katie and Allie smiled. “If we live here, absolutely!”

12

“ Education cannot be hurried. Children need time to develop and some need much more than others. Nature furnishes us with striking examples of the importance of an unhurried and uncluttered existence.” … “I contend that acceleration is not the answer. I believe that more time, greater patience, deeper understanding of the child are all needed.”   — M arg aret Chadwick

Soon, Kevin mentions the infamous traveling bell story to the chagrin of his daughters and their, “You’ve told us this before!” response. During Spring Break in the trio’s senior year, the Chadwick bell was sent around the country with a parent, who was a pilot for Alaska Airlines and would take photos of the bell at every airport. The bell sent postcards from its travels to the school and was later dressed up as a person to “walk” with the Class of 1990 at their graduation. Everyone laughs as even more stories are shared. Tales from the varsity football seasons, outdoor ed trips and the Class of 1990’s senior prank — taking all of the furniture out of Roessler and stacking it in the amphitheater in a giant pyramid. All agree that Chadwick brought out the best in them, one of the main reasons they, along with a few of their other classmates, would later send their children to Chadwick. “I love that Chadwick encourages participation in all aspects of the school,” Laura said. “I was provided so many opportunities to be engaged with the school inside and outside of the classroom.” Laura attended Chadwick from fourth grade until graduation and has two sons who are Chadwick WOWs, Gavin ’22 and Bryce ’25. Kevin noted, “Attending Chadwick allowed me to expand my experiences and gave me the space to discover other activities, like

ceramics, that I didn’t know I would enjoy. If I had gone to a big public school, I might have just been the jock football player and not encouraged to develop other parts of myself. That is the biggest value-add of attending Chadwick. Your ‘box’ isn’t defined for you. You can make your own box.” When Kevin enrolled his two daughters, Ashley ’24 and Carly ’26, he was thrilled to see that a few of his teachers were still at Chadwick, including Mr. Wiedenmann and Ms. Webster. “I want my daughters to have the same chances to discover aspects of themselves they might not know are there. Chadwick is a space for that.” Thirty years after graduation, Eric said he still talks regularly with his classmates. His son, Landon ’20, has been attending Chadwick since first grade. “Chadwick School is not just a place you attend — it’s a community,” Eric said.

F RO M T H E H E A D O F S CH OOL

Dear Chadwick Community, It warms my heart to read about the Chadwick legacy families featured in this Annual Report (see pages 6–17). The relationships here at Chadwick are strong, meaningful and lasting, and as I begin my first year as Head of School, I am humbled and grateful for the privilege to lead this outstanding school and build upon the excellent work of the previous Heads of School. I’m also fortunate to begin my tenure when Chadwick is stronger than ever, with significant advances being made. This past year, Chadwick reaffirmed its Mission and strategic direction, we broke ground on our new Center for Innovation and Research (our first new construction project in 15 years), and we enhanced our curriculum around the much-needed 21st-century skills of ethical, global leadership and social and emotional wellness. Whether it’s outstanding academics, athletics, outdoor education, community service, global programs, performing arts or visual arts, Chadwick students on a daily basis are demonstrating their intellect and character in everything they do.

19

And they are confidently taking charge of their future, as they plan the next steps in their educational journeys. Our 96 members of the Class of 2019 received 465 offers of college admission and are attending 64 institutions, including a range of Ivy League schools, liberal arts colleges, flagship public universities, engineering colleges, art schools, institutions with highly selective performing arts programs, and more. We’re proud of all our students, and we’re grateful to our families, who continue to invest in our Mission to develop global citizens with keen minds, exemplary character, self-knowledge and the ability to lead. As you read the wonderful stories of multiple generations of Chadwick students, I invite you to join me in helping create Chadwick’s next 84 years. Together, we can ensure that Chadwick’s legacy of academic achievement, exemplary character and learning by doing will benefit future generations.

1990–91 The Chadwick Mothers Association is renamed the Chadwick Parents Association.

F RO M T H E C HA I R OF T H E BOA R D

Dear Friends of Chadwick School, For the Roessler-Chadwick Foundation (RCF) Board of Trustees, our most significant work occurred this past year, as we sought to hire an experienced, talented and visionary Head of School. Following a thorough search and interview process that included input from the entire community, the RCF Board was delighted to appoint Daljit “Dal” Sohi as Chadwick’s 12th Head of School, on July 1, 2019. We’re excited to welcome Dal, who brings personal integrity and tremendous breadth and depth of experience as a school leader. Dal’s career spans 24 years, and includes school leadership and service on school accreditation teams in six countries and four continents. Most important, his commitment to a student-centered and character-based education aligns perfectly with Chadwick’s Mission, Core Values and our strategic plan. RCF Board members actively engaged in the Chadwick community this past year at Town Hall meetings, as well as in our work guiding the long-term operations of Chadwick School, including overseeing the Mission, Strategic Plan and financial reporting. As we reintroduced the long-term strategic direction for Chadwick, we also affirmed our role as stewards of Chadwick’s future.

1999–2000 The school builds its first website.

22

Chadwick School’s strategic goals include: • Teach a world-class educational program that develops global citizens with keen minds, exemplary character, self-knowledge and the ability to lead. • Attract and retain students, faculty and staff who are aligned with our Mission and Core Values and who strengthen our community. • Position Chadwick for long-term growth and success through strategic planning and investment in capital improvements. This was a year of transition, and we are very grateful to Interim Head of School Jeff Mercer, the Chadwick leadership team, and faculty and staff for remaining passionately and unconditionally committed to serving the needs of our students. The Board and I look forward to interacting with you in the coming years as together we build on the Chadwick legacy. Regards,

All gifts to Chadwick School are greatly appreciated. Because Annual Giving contributions support Chadwick’s current operations and highest priority needs each year, special recognition is afforded to donors who directly support Chadwick’s Annual Fund or Delphinus Operating Fund for Financial Aid, or who make restricted annual gifts to current operations. Recognition levels are determined by the total dollar amount of gifts, including employer matching gifts. Contributions to sponsor or underwrite events or to support parent organizations are not direct contributions to current operations and therefore are not included in Annual Giving recognition. Such contributions are recognized separately at the events or by the parent organizations. Gifts to endowed funds, including the general endowment, support the long-term growth of the school rather than current operations and are honored separately as well. In addition, this list celebrates consecutive years of giving by individuals. It is a testament to the loyalty and commitment of the Chadwick community that so many consistently support the school over multiple years. As with all our efforts to thank and recognize donors, every attempt has been made to ensure the accuracy of our information. If your records differ from ours, please contact the Development Office so we may update our files. Contributions from donors recognized here represent more than $2.22 million in Annual Giving to Chadwick in 2018–19. We are deeply grateful to all members of the Chadwick community who include Annual Giving to Chadwick in their philanthropic plans each year. Thank you! 29

2018–19 Annual Fund TOTA L GI V I NG TO T H E A NNUA L F U ND $ 1.8 7 M I LLI ON All monies r aised through the Chadwick Annual Fund are used to support the operating budget in the same academic year in which they are given. Thanks to the generosity of Annual Fund donors, Chadwick students enjoy enhanced opportunities in all areas of campus life and learning. We thank the following 2018–19 Annual Fund donors for their commitment to making every academic and co-curricular program at Chadwick 100 percent outstanding for our students. Chadwick relies on a committed group of volunteers to reach out to members of our community for their support of the Annual Fund. These volunteers write letters, make phone calls and assist with planning to help raise funds to support Chadwick’s students, faculty and programs. We are deeply grateful for their hard work, leadership and gifts of time to the school.

PARE N T A N N UA L F U ND

One of the most significant sources of contributions to the Annual Fund is our parent community. In 2018–19, 100 percent of Village families supported the Annual Fund and 85 percent of Chadwick families overall participated in the Fund.

Endowment funds are financial assets that generate income through effective investment of the principal. Portions of this income are used to relieve the operating budget, and, when substantial enough, to help minimize tuition increases. Contributions may be made to existing funds, or new funds may be established through major gifts. Endowment funds are frequently established to honor or remember someone of significance to the school. We are especially grateful to those donors who have established the endowment funds that provide security for our future. Thank you for making the 10th Annual Chadwick Golf Tournament such a tremendous success! We were delighted to welcome 160 guests including our 118 golfers — comprised of trustees, volunteers, alumni, students, parents, past parents and friends. In addition, the event raised over $100,000, including $44,500 to support the fit course and golf training zone at the tournament’s “Fund-a-Need” live auction. Finally, we would like to especially thank the tournament co-chairs, Ian Eddleston and Van Hess and the committee members for their dedicated leadership that made the event great!

Man y people have already made the decision to include Chadwick School in their family’s estate plans. Why? For some, it’s the lifelong memories built while spending time on the Chadwick campus. For others, it’s the desire to ensure that the Chadwick legacy remains strong for future generations. Regardless of the reason, the benefits of making a planned gift and thereby joining the Johnson Legacy Society remain the same: a strong financial future for Chadwick and significant tax benefits for the donor and his or her family. The Ingebretsen/Hoffman family’s long rich history with Chadwick made giving back to the school a family affair. The seed was planted decades ago by James Ingebretsen, Dorothy and Kaaren’s father, who was a Chadwick parent and grandparent. He was very appreciative of the quality education both his daughters and grandsons received at Chadwick. He credited the school for providing them the necessary tools for a successful future. Upon his death in 1999, he left property to Chadwick. The family’s legacy began when Dorothy and Kaaren started high school. They were part of the school’s small close-knit community led by Margaret and Commander Chadwick. Their history continued almost forty years later when Kaaren’s twin sons, Derek and Jason Hoffman attended, graduating with the class of 1995. The family first heard of Chadwick from family friends. They lived in Portuguese Bend at a time when the closest high schools in the South Bay were an hour bus ride away. Dorothy started at Chadwick first and Kaaren followed a few years later. They enjoyed the freedom the rural open campus provided them, the small class sizes and the individual attention they received from their teachers. They were both active students, Dorothy worked on the school newspaper and the yearbook and both sisters competed in several sports. Kaaren ’58 fondly reminisces about her time at the school with the Chadwicks. Commander was one of her favorites; she recalls the

times when she would hear Commander walking the school’s grounds with his German Shepherd while he jiggled loose change in his pocket thereby warning students of his arrival. She says that he was the “school’s disciplinarian.” She enjoyed his stern appearance and said: “he had a tough exterior, but was fair and kind.” She remembers long after her Chadwick and college years that Commander delivered a wedding gift and well wishes to her home before she was married. Dorothy ’55 had a closer relationship with Mrs. Chadwick who instilled in her a love of reading and encouraged her in her literary pursuits. She says “Mrs. Chadwick impressed upon me the importance of expressing oneself clearly and accurately when both writing and speaking, and she was a role model for me in this.” Chadwick taught both Kaaren and Dorothy to be assertive and independent learners who acted with integrity and generosity. They were prepared for college after leaving Chadwick and were able to navigate the large college communities academically with relative ease because of the excellent study habits and high level of academics the school provided. Long after graduation, Kaaren served as a member of The RoesslerChadwick Board of Trustees. Dorothy had married and relocated to Ojai where her son, Eric, and daughter, Stacey, attended school. As an alumna and a former parent, Kaaren is grateful for the Chadwick experience and has also included the school in her estate. She says “at Chadwick each student is encouraged to strive to be their best and the school offers a unique, quality education.” She hopes more children will have such an opportunity. Both sisters try to attend reunion events and remain very close with several Chadwick classmates.

The Chadwick Parents A ssociation (CPA) is an organization made up of all parents of Chadwick students. Its purpose is, broadly, to support the school and the school community. The CPA coordinates Village Room Parents and Middle and Upper School Parent Representatives, supports parents and families by helping parents become better acquainted, raises funds to support Chadwick, and helps foster and improve communications between parents and the school. The CPA organizes myriad events and activities throughout the grade levels and the school. Numerous volunteers donate thousands of hours to enhance the Chadwick experience for all students through the CPA . Thanks to their fundraising efforts, the CPA raised $226,000 for Chadwick in 2018–19. These funds were given to support the Chadwick Solar Initiative, and have been applied toward the installation of solar panels on Laverty Center. We are truly appreciative of the Chadwick Parents Association for this and all the ways it strengthens our school community.

Additionally, the CPA actively supports these programs: G LO B A L OPPORTUNITIES Chadwick provides a student exchange program with the Chadwick International campus. The CPA helps mobilize host families comprised of K–12 Chadwick parents. The student exchanges between campuses provide immersive, memorable experiences. THE STEM TE A M Chadwick’s STEM program is an immersive K–12 initiative that inspires and prepares students to think, do and lead in an increasingly global and technological marketplace. Parents volunteer as drivers for math, science, and robotics competitions, and assist with makerspace activities.

VISUA L A RT S SQ UA D The Visual Arts Squad is comprised of K–12 parent volunteers who believe that a strong arts education is a sound investment in the overall development of our students. A members support the department throughout the year, donating their time and resources to enhancing the program. Opportunities for involvement include assisting with hospitality at art shows, coordinating the department’s donations for the Spring Event, promoting programs and events and more.

C PA S PR I N G E V E N T D I N N E R A N D AU C T I O N Hundreds of Chadwick community members gathered to celebrate Chadwick’s “May the Fourth Be with You: The Chadwick Space Ball” for the Chadwick Parents Association Spring Event fundraiser. Volunteers, led by Ways and Means Co-Chairs Kristen Van Cott and Ellie Handler, transformed the Los Angeles City Club into an outer space galaxy and treated guests to a spectacular evening of fun costumes, dinner and dancing.

In addition to providing financial resources, FOL members sponsor visiting authors and illustrators, manage the school wide “Book Talk” programs, organize and manage the Village School PALs library volunteers program, work with the Community Service program on literacy projects and organize the keenly anticipated Chadwick Book Fair each year. They give countless volunteer hours each year to support and enhance library and literacy programs in Grades K–12. In 2018–19, the Friends of the Library funded a significant amount of classroom materials, games for student wellness and provided books for the new “Battle of the Books” program for grades 3–5. They also supported the GetLit Program and funded the group’s outstanding visiting author series, which included appearances by nationally-renowned authors Dav Pilkey and Sonia Nazario. Throughout the year, the Booster Club promotes attendance at all sporting events, recruits sports representatives for every team, organizes “spirit days,” sells spirit wear, and hosts the annual Chili Cook-off. In addition to raising school spirit, the Booster Club also raises funds to support Chadwick’s athletic programs. This year, the Booster Club had a wonderful year, selling merchandise, operating the Snack Shack and donating $7,500 to the Athletic Department. The funds helped to purchase cameras and equipment necessary to provide live streaming of Chadwick sporting events.
