National Day of Protest Against Family Court Abuse Last Friday, August 12, was a special day. Around the country, small groups of determined individuals participated in a National Day of Protest Against Family Court Abuse. Here in Buffalo, NY, PRP2 member, Jackie X Bontzolakes led a day long action, from 8:30am – 4:30pm, at the Family Court building, 1 Niagara Plaza, which brought these alleged abuses to the forefront of the community’s attention. Participants shared stories of abuse that illustrated violations of constitutional rights and human rights by governmental entities as well as C.P.S. We are unfortunately living in an era in which the desire to keep a family together has been criminalized. Across the nation, people are standing up and speaking out against a court system that pits government against humanity everyday. On August 12, protest rallies in California, Michigan, Illinois and Buffalo, NY reminded us that, “Family is First!” For anyone interested in strategizing for future rallies, There will be a meeting on Wednesday, August 17, from 2:00-3:00 at the Merriweather Library. – Jackie X

Video shows brutal racist attack on Black Man James Craig Anderson in Mississippi
A
Black man in Mississippi was beaten by a group of white teens and crushed by a pickup truck - and it was caught on tape, police said. "This was a crime of hate," Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith told CNN in a report aired Sunday. "The evidence will show that." Authorities say James Craig Anderson was set upon by several teenagers and savagely beaten the night of June 26 ion a Jackson motel parking lot. Witnesses said the group used racial epithets during the assault and barked out "White Power!" After clobbering him, several of the teens got into a Ford F250 pickup and while Anderson tried to stumble for help, the driver ran him down, police said. The video, captured by a surveillance camera, shows the attack in haunting detail. It ends with the truck backing up, then slamming into the 49-year-old auto worker. "It appears there is no doubt that this was a racially motivated killing," Winston Thompson, the lawyer representing Anderson's family, told
ATTENTION ROOFERS:
backagendareport.com Racial Profiling is Cause of Mass Black Incarceration
“There is enough data now to show that racial profiling is the major cause of mass incarceration,” former Black Panther Dhoruba bin Wahada told an Atlanta gathering organized by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement. “It’s fashionable now to talk about mass incarceration,” he said. “Everybody from Al Sharpton to Cornel West to CNN is talking about it.” What the people must demand is “decentralization of the police” so that local communities can control the workings of the criminal justice system. “With the strike at Pelican Bay” prison, in California, “it’s becoming internationally embarrassing for the United States” to have the world think of U.S. prisons as “the dungeons of the 21st century.” Economic aggression is just as deadly as imperialism’s shooting wars, said Omali Yeshitela, chairman of the Black Is Back Coalition for Social Justice, Peace and Reparations. It is outrageous, he said, that “half the people on Earth live off $2 a day.” The Black Is Back Coalition has called for an International Day of Action, on August 20, to oppose the “other” wars: all forms of oppression against African people around the globe.
Halt Sanctions Against Zimbabwe
Workers who tended roofer’s kettles or carried buckets of hot coal tar pitch for application on roofing surfaces are also at risk for developing cancer due to their exposure to coal tar pitch.
Human rights lawyer Roger Wareham says, unless Black political leaders withdraw support for U.S. sanctions against Zimbabwe, “we will be as complicit in the oppression of Zimbabwe as were are if we take no stand against what’s happening in Libya.” Speaking to a New York City audience, Wareham said the Movement for Democratic Change, the main opposition party in Zimbabwe was established with Western money “in order to carry out their policy of regime change.”

CNN. "The family is still in shock still in disbelief." Deryl Dedmon was the teen behind the wheel of the Ford truck that killed Anderson, police said. He has been charged with murder. he was in another car and had driven away before Anderson was killed. The two 18-year-olds drove 15 miles to Jackson in search of a black man to attack, prosecutors said. At least five other teens are believed to have been with the two at the time, but none has been charged. During grand jury testimony, Detective Eric Smith said Dedmon had been robbed in the weeks before Anderson's death and that he was looking for "some sort of revenge." On June 26, Dedmon and Rice were at a party when Dedmon came up with the idea to come to Jackson to mess with some people," the detective said. "Dedmon murdered this man because he was Black," Hinds told CNN. The teens are expected to go on trial in the fall.
Lisa Jackson, the Black administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, is headed for a nasty confrontation with human rights forces if she continues to stand by her civil rights chief, Rafael DeLeon, who is accused of making racist and sexist remarks. Marsha Coleman-Adebayo, a whistleblower and a key figure in passage of the NO FEAR Act who was fired by DeLeon, wrote an open letter to EPA chief Jackson, demanding that DeLeon, a Black Puerto Rican, be removed from his job. “We are not prepared to accept Black oppressors, as opposed to white oppressors,” said Coleman-Adebayo.
Morehouse to hold “Nile Valley Conference” on African Roots of Civilization
“For 200 years,” says Dr. Charles Finch II, noted scholar and medical doctor, “the academic establishment of America have systematically falsified history” in order to place the origins of human civilization somewhere other than Africa. Finch and other scholars and activists will converge on Morehouse College, in Atlanta, for a second “Nile Valley Conference” on the roots of civilization. Morehouse was the site of the first conference, 18 years ago.

HEALTH MATTERS
Environmental Racism: Asbestos in Da’ Hood...
Buffalo, like many cities across this country, is no stranger to environmental racism. The former Kensington Heights, that gigantic eyesore that has stood empty for years and towers on Fillmore Avenue near Kensington in the heart of the Black community, has recently been identified as a real environmental health concern. Two inspectors on the site- one from the city and one from the state have been indicted for covering up the illegal disposal of asbestos at the former housing project site. To add insult to injury, it was revealed that they both remained on the job a week (now more) after the “crime” was uncovered. The Mayor, who has the dubious reputation of throwing Black women under the bus (City Hall employees, commissioners etc. ) , has yet to do anything about Manuszewski, the inspector from the city. Both he and Theodore Lehmann of the state - were accused of producing asbestos inspection reports that they knew were false. Asbestos has been classified as a known human carcinogen (a substance that causes cancer). Johnson Contracting of Buffalo and JMD Environmental Inc. of Grand Island were charged in the 23-count indictment made public last week. Johnson was hired to remove and dispose of the asbestos and JMD was hired to monitor their work. For six months Johnson instructed its workers to dump harmful material down holes cut the floors of each building. The company is also charged with failing to wet the asbestos and leaving it in open containers. The inspectors certified that the work was completed when it had not been finished. Neighborhood spokesperson and Glenwood block Club head Larry Williams said in a media report that the fact that those guys remained on the job was “unbelievable” and an outrage. Kensington Heights owned by BMHA, and long scheduled for demolition, is located near three schools, ECMC and a park often used by youth sports teams. According to activist Sam Radford, a group of concerned citizens, parents of children who attend school in the area and little league football coaches met last week to ask Public Health officials to assure them that illegal dumping of Asbestos. The community wants to be assured that a proper clean up took place and wants air samples and other testing to be completed by the EPA.
What are the health hazards of exposure to asbestos? People may be exposed to asbestos in their workplace, their communities, or their homes. If products containing asbestos are disturbed, tiny asbestos fibers are released into the air. When asbestos fibers are breathed in, they may get trapped in the lungs and remain there for a long time. Over time, these fibers can accumulate and cause scarring and inflammation, which can affect breathing and lead to serious health. Asbestos has been classified as a known human carcinogen (a substance that causes cancer) by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the EPA, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Studies have shown that exposure to asbestos may increase the risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma (a relatively rare cancer of the thin membranes that line the chest and abdomen). Although rare, mesothelioma is the most common form of cancer associated with asbestos exposure. In addition to lung cancer and mesothelioma, some studies have suggested an association between asbestos exposure and gastrointestinal and colorectal cancers, as well as an elevated risk for cancers of the throat, kidney, esophagus, and gallbladder . Asbestos exposure may also increase the risk of asbestosis (an inflammatory condition affecting the lungs that can cause shortness of breath, coughing, and permanent lung damage) and other nonmalignant lung and pleural disorders. Evidence suggests that people with pleural disease caused by exposure to asbestos may be at increased risk for lung cancer AUGUST 17, 2011
Processed red meat linked to diabetes
Skip the hot dogs, hold the bacon and forget the sausage. Eating processed meats and red meat regularly increases your risk of type 2 diabetes, a large study shows. The Harvard study, published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found: † A 2-ounce serving a day of processed meat (hot dog, bacon, salami or bologna) increased the risk of diabetes by 50 percent. † A 4-ounce serving a day (the size of a deck of cards) of unprocessed red meat such as hamburger, steak, pork or lamb was associated with a 20 percent increased risk of diabetes. † Substituting nuts, whole grains and low-fat dairy such as yogurt for a serving a day of these types of processed or unprocessed meats lowers the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 16 percent to 35 percent. “Clearly, processed meat is much worse than unprocessed meat for raising the risk, but unprocessed red meat is not benign,” says senior author Frank Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health.

23 Years of Praise, Worshsip and More!
Takin’ It To the Streets! E vangelist Anita Williams is passionate about bringing hope to her community through her annual Takin’ It To The Streets rally. Now celebrating its 23rd year, the big event is set to take place this weekend in Martin Luther King, Jr. Park August 20 and 21. Admission to the day long event is free, and there will be lots of activities for families to enjoy. In addition to food give-aways, health screenings, a variety of vendors, and soul saving, there will be a Festival of Music feauring such local and national artists as: Kim Person , Lamont Perry , Joyce Wilson Nixon, Old School B Boys ,Young People Of Gospel , Day Star Singers ,Marsha MC Wilson, Just Issac , Darcel Blue , Morning Star Singers .Chosen Vessels , WYL , Elo Him , Pastor Jackson , Dr Orlando Short and Pastor Drayton , just to name a few . Takin’ It To The Streets started over two decades ago after Evangelist Williams, while sitting in Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, thought to herself, “My neighborhood needs help. It needs something positive.” Indeed, more than half of the households in the area consisted of single moms raising kids. So Anita, an RN by trade, decided to specifically focus on helping them out with a community rally in the park. She sought out donations of school supplies, kids’ clothing, and non-perishable food. In addition, she brought in pony rides, bounce houses, and organized games for the kids,
PRAYER IN THE PARK
along with health screenings and a job fair for the adults in an effort to bring joy, inspiration, and hope to Buffalo’s East Side. “The message we’re ‘taking to the streets,’ is that God cares about us totally from the crown of our head to the souls of our feet,” said Anita, who is a member of Greater Faith. “ He’s concerned about every area of our being, that’s why we do the fun things, the health component, free clothing, etc. Over the years we have kept the ministries. “I want to thank all our media sponsors and all of those who have brought us to 23 years,” said Evangelist Williams. “We could not have done it without you. A special thanks to my husband Dillard Williams Jr. and my mom, Mary Baldwin (also known as Mama B.) and all of our committee members.
Evangelist Aninta Williams
“This year’s event is dedicated to the loving memory of the late Bishop Nathan S. Halton.” she concluded. For more information call Evangelist Anita Williams at 716-891-4760. (Mark Weber of Primo PR 716 contributed to this article)

Since their arrival here they have become loyal members of Prince of Peace Church of God in Christ where both them are committed in extending a helping hand to the poor by providing food and cooking a meal for the elderly and disabled. When Ms Bessie Key cooks a meal for her family she always takes a meal to someone less fortunate who can’t do for themselves. Columbus has always been a trailblazer in the community of Western New York as one of the first to create a trailer equipped with a bar-b-cue smoker that could vend at all major events in western New York long before others who have since copied his innovation.=Bessie and Columbus Key, through their 50 years of marriage, continue to just try to help someone in need of their assistance, and ask for no thanks - just God’s grace!

ON STAGE *Actor/comedian Chris Tucker on stage Friday Sept 9 at Shea’s Performing Arts. Tickets @Ticketmaster or Shea’s Box Office or call 1-800745-3000.
FANTASTIC VOYAGE! For two exciting shows, old school legends Lakeside took its Buffalo audience on an unforgettable ride to the “land of funk!” Local superstars in their own right, Dee Paris and the Old School B-Boys did a really great job opening up the show; each turning in performances so solid, you were left wondering what more the featured artists would be able to deliver (the lovely Ms. Paris is really quite incredible – few vocalists can rock a Jennifer Hudson song the way she did . She also did a great a job of co-hosting the evening’s event along with David Allen). Hats off to Dane Smith and his Godfather Promotions for always providing a real opportunity for local talent at his concerts. The B-boys continue to evolve and have really stepped up their program -moving way beyond (but maintaining) their signature street corner harmony. These brothers are really, really good and a real crowd favorite. Allen Carrier’s perfectly pitched falsetto voice seems to get better with time and quite frankly Lakeside would have done well to have featured him as a guest soloist when they performed their rendition of their hit “Say Yes.” And although the brief balled segment of Lakeside’s performance may not have been their strong point, the rest of their high energy show turned the crowd out, leaving them on their feet. Decked out in white “cruise / nautical” gear, they opened with a funky intro and broke into a unique “praise song” (that let you know a lot about where they were coming from spiritually) before really getting into their act. They showed strong versatility in their remake of the 1965 Beatles hit “I Wanna Hold Our Hand.” Classics “All the Way Live” and “Fantastic Voyage” both featured some awesome guitar and drum solos and the lead singer’s voice soared on each tune. Lakeside’s back up band was musically outstanding. Thank to Dane and Godfather Promotions for bringing us another night of great entertainment!

The legendary O’Jays have something in common with Buffalo. Their name - the O’Jays – is in honor of former WUFO Radio DJ, Eddie O’Jay, who was, at the time, an influential Cleveland, Ohio DJ and part of a powerful management team which included another Buffalo legend DJ, Frankie Crocker. When they take the stage at Rochester’s Blue Cross Arena on Saturday night, two of the original members, the ever popular Eddie Levert and Walter Williams, will mark 53 years in the entertainment business. The O'Jays were one of Philadelphia soul's most popular and long-lived outfits, rivaled only by the Spinners as soul's greatest vocal group of the '70s. They formed in 1958 in Canton, OH, where all five original members — Eddie Levert (born June 16, 1942), Walter Williams (born June 16, 1942), William Powell, Bill Isles, and Bobby Massey — attended Canton McKinley High School. Inspired to start a singing group after seeing a performance by Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers they first called themselves the Triumphs, then switched to the Mascots in 1960. The Mascots made their recording debut in 1961 with the single "Miracles," issued on the Cincinnati-based King label. It earned them a fan in the influential Cleveland DJ Eddie O'Jay (who was part of the powerful management team of Frankie Crocker, Herb Hamlett & Eddie O'Jay) who gave them some airplay and career advice; in turn, the group renamed itself the O'Jays in 1963. The O'Jays were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004, and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. The O'Jays had their first hit with "Lonely Drifter", in 1963. In spite of the record's success, the group was considering quitting the music industry until Gamble & Huff, a team of producers and songwriters, took an interest in the group. With Gamble & Huff, the O'Jays (now a trio after the departure of Isles and Massey) emerged at the forefront of Philadelphia soul with "Back Stabbers" (1972), and topped the Billboard Hot 100 the following year with "Love Train". Throughout the 1960s, they continued to chart with songs such as "Lipstick Traces" , "Stand In For Love," "Stand Tall," "Let It All Out," "I'll Be Sweeter Tomorrow," "Look Over Your Shoulder," "Deeper In Love With You," and "One Night Affair," along with several other regional and national pop and R&B hits. In 1972, they finally scored with their first million-seller, "Back Stabbers.” By this time, original members Bill Isles and Bobby Massey had

SPEAK OUT!
What’s Really Behind the Big Push to Get Rid of Dr. Williams?
Most folks don’t realize that once Dr Williams is removed from the district by the School Board, we will not have one single Black man or woman in a position of authority that can make any decisions without at least two other White folks approving it. `I hate to infer that all things are Black and White, but what do you say when you have five White men and one Hispanic collaborating to get rid of this Black Man (Dr Williams)? I have not been a fan of his methodology but Buffalo has been at the bottom of barrow out of 97 other school districts in Western New York since before desegregation. Our problem is way bigger than any superintendent. The Buffalo Teachers Union, one of the strongest unions in the country, has a strangle hole on the education of our children. Most teachers that have children, don’t even let their children go to the same school system that they work for unless they are in City Honors, Hutch Tech, Olmstead or a Montessori’s school. They are prime examples of the unfair inequitable Two Tier School System we have. I am not being anti-union, but it is clear that the union wants us to think that if you question their unwillingness or BRYON MCINTYRE incompetence, that you are challenging all unions. That’s not the case in Buffalo. For over twenty years we have seen less than thirty percent of the children graduated from high school, but they haven’t lost or given up a dime. After all, their children don’t go to the school system they work for! Just recently, the district refused the transfers of about a hundred teachers in order to maintain consistency and stability in the schools. The BTF sued and won; now the teachers that might have transferred may receive payment for overtime they may have gotten if transferred. You read that right, its ludicrous. After that, the BTF refused to let teachers be transferred under a federal and state proposal that will give the district a extra 2 million totaling 8 million extra dollars for the student achievement program. Our children LOST 8 million dollars that would have been dedicated to student achievement. The district got them to agree to 4 schools, but the plans were so shabby they all where rejected by Albany and we lost another 8 million dedicated to achievement dollars. Not one Board Member has a child in traditional Buffalo Public Schools. What’s that about? Fact- Every school district around us has professional experienced coaches, coaching their sports teams. Most all districts around Buffalo, get about seventy percent of their athletes some type of scholarship for collage. Fact- In Buffalo, the teacher with the most seniority gets to be a coach and make about 8 thousand in overtime and his or her specialty may be Math, Science or English, experience in coaching or sports is NOT required! Not only are the children being failed academically, they are deprived of meaningful athletic scholarship opportunity and not even prepared academically prepared to enter Junior College with out taking remedial courses. I’m not going to get into the suspension rate that accounted for almost half of the children in the district who were suspended at one point during the school year. Somebody is getting screwed, and that somebody is our children. I understand union solidarity, but some questions need to be asked of the BTF President. Mr. Rumor has maintained a very high standard, compensation and great benefits for his membership. But our children are getting secured out of education and athletic opportunity unless they are fortunate enough to be in a top tier Buffalo School mention above or a suburban school for athletics. Don’t believe the hype about the superintendent being so bad and needing to go. Like in most places, folks don’t want a strong willed Black Man telling then what to do. Don’t forget Dr. Harris. This push to get rid of Dr. Wiliams, you can best believe is being pushed by the BTF union. We have a systemic instutionlized racist problem that manifests in the continuous failure of our children, relegating them to the chow lines in prison or the crack lines in the streets. Wake up Black and Brown Buffalo, and ask the question, what’s really going on?
Tuesdays 12 NOON Page 10
School Daze: It’s Lynching Time Again The Sunday cover of the Buffalo News was quite disturbing…it plastered the face of our brother, Dr. James A. Williams, over almost the entire page, and looked exactly as it was intended to look…like a huge target. The Title read: “Williams’ attendance stats spotty.” The article went on to claim that the Superintendent had spent 130 days out of town, according to his cell phone records. Let’s make only a momentary disapproving Sabirah Muhammad mention of the low down, intrusive tracking of a brotha’s cell phone, because obviously it’s legal. Moving on then, to the lack of balance in the article that ignored the high absenteeism among district teachers, and the inevitably high rate of absenteeism among students that’s reflective of the adult example before them. Millions More Movement cochair Sam Radford has taken the lead in raising the issue of high teacher absenteeism. When asked about his impressions of Sunday’s article, Mr. Radford responded: “Although it did make mention of (the Superintendent’s) legitimate absences in the latter part of the article, it was a slight, meant to sway public opinion against him. The total reality is that this is more of an issue for the Board than the Superintendent. For Ralph Hernandez to say that he never knew when Dr. Williams would be out of town, well, who was supervising him? The article is more reflective of the competence of our Board than our Superintendent. His job is not to supervise himself, but the staff that he hires. The Board of Education has one employee. They can’t keep track of one employee?” Can we talk? The current furor is not about how many times Dr. Williams went out of town, or any of the other smoke screens that have been raised, or have yet to be raised. The level of parent activism that we as a community have engaged in over the past few years has reached a crescendo, and we are moving as concerned parents from mobilization to organization to law making – knocking at the door of real change. The ouster of Dr. Williams and Deputy Superintendent Dr. Folasade Oladele (a bold, uncompromising, intelligent, self respecting, supremely qualified sister) has identified two scapegoats, and cleared the way for the total white administration of black schools, and further solidified the grip on a huge money pot for the suburbs. It’s our policy as a Millions More Movement not to bash black leadership, no matter what its caliber, but to settle
our differences behind closed doors, as self respecting people do. In the moot case of Dr. Williams, there are lessons to be learned. Dr. Williams’ troubles began when he took this post with other allegiances – to moneyed interests that often conflicted with our own. He steadfastly refused, for example, to remove the police officers from the schools when the brutal arrest of a tiny 17-year old girl could have ended fatally, or to hold rebellious teachers accountable to new rules regarding suspension in the wake of the murder of 15-year old Jawaan Daniels. As these unholy alliances go, now that his utility has come to an end, he is expendable. Parents have shed so much light on the blighted condition of most of the schools, that the district must do something. Because our brother’s loyalties were divided, there is no hue and cry, no significant protest as the lynch mob closes in. Some are crying out, but these are they who understand the need to close ranks around our brother as a principle of family and community, in support of black leadership, and in preference to dastardly alternatives. These are they who understand that our leadership may stray, but with love and patience, can be called back home. Dr. Williams, however, appears content with his lot. In a recent broadcast of the radio program hosted by attorney Anthony Pendergrass, Buffalo On Fire, he discussed the latest attempt to terminate him. “I’m the easiest person to get rid of. If you want to get rid of me, you don’t have to go through all this calling a meeting. It’s simple. Sit down, cut the deal, I’m outta here.” Damn. Not… “Rally the community… there’s an all out attack on the leadership of our schools which will gravely impact our children…” not: let’s close ranks and fight back for our babies…If you’ll fight with me I’m in it for the long haul…” but:
Wake Up People! Dear Editor: We have been sitting on our hands too long. The powers that be have stepped up their oppressive efforts to keep us down. Every group but ours has decided to fight back except Black people. We need to organize and strategize to set a path for a sustainable future. Blacks are being driven to a point of extinction. Having a Black president seems to fuel the effort to keep blacks as second class citizens. We won the right to vote but the powers that be learned how to alter our votes. We won the right to sit on the front of the bus but they changed the bus routes. We won the right to go to integrated schools but they reclassified the schools. Every right we have achieved has been circumvented by some racist tactic. It’s time we stand u and say, “No More!” They have tried to lock us out of every opportunity to succeed. The prison industrial complex, drugs in our communities, and job discrimination, has taken their toll and our only real choice is to stand and fight back. We wrestle not against flesh and blood but spiritual wickedness I high places. We need to redirect our attention to the things Dr. King fought and died for - freedom and justice for all. We are who we are waiting for. Keep hope alive and organize! If not for your sake, then for the sake of our children! -Rev. E.M. Daniels

A Message to the World
“Sixty years ago, as a Catholic Air Force chaplain, Father George Zebelka blessed the men who dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Over the next twenty years, he gradually came to believe that he had been terribly wrong, that he had denied the very foundations of his faith by lending moral and religious support to the bombing. Zabelka, who died in 1992, gave this speech on the 40th anniversary of the bombings. He left this message for the world: As a Catholic chaplain I watched as the Boxcar, piloted by a good Irish Catholic pilot, dropped the bomb on Urakami Cathedral in Nagasaki, the center of Catholicism in Japan. I never preached a single sermon against killing civilians to the men who were doing it… It never entered my mind to protest publicly the consequences of these massive air raids. I was told it was necessary – told openly by the military and told implicitly by my Church’s leadership. I struggled. I argued. But yes, there it was in the Sermon on the Mount, very clear: “Love your enemies. Return good for evil.” I went through a crisis of faith. Either accept what Christ said, as unpassable and silly as it may seem, or deny him completely. For the last 1700 years the Church has not only been making war respectable: it has been inducing people to believe it is an honorable profession, an honorable Christian profession. This is not true. This is a lie. For the 300 years immediately following Jesus’ resurrection, the Church universally saw Christ and his teaching as nonviolent. Remember that the Church taught this ethic in the face of at least three serious attempts by the state to liquidate her. It was subject to horrendous and ongoing torture and death. If ever there was an occasion for justified retaliation and defensive slaughter, whether in form of a just war or a just revolution, this was it. The economic and political elite of the Roman state and their military had turned the citizens of the state against Christians and were embarked on a murderous public policy of exterminating the Christian community. Yet the Church, in the face of the heinous crimes committed against her members, insisted without reservation that when Christ disarmed Peter he disarmed all Christians. Christians continued to believe that Christ was, to use the words of an ancient liturgy, their fortress, their refuge, and their strength, and that if Christ was all they needed for security and defense, then Christ was all they should have. Indeed, this was a new security ethic. Christians understood that if they would only follow Christ and his teaching, they couldn’t fail. When opportunities were given for Christians to appease the state by joining the fighting Roman army, these opportunities were rejected, because the early Church saw a complete and an obvious incompatibility between loving as Christ loved and killing. It was Christ, not Mars, who gave security and peace. Today the world is on the brink of ruin because the Church refuses to be the Church, because we Christians have been deceiving ourselves and the nonChristian world about the truth of Christ. There is no way to follow Christ, to love as Christ loved, and simultaneously to kill other people. It is a lie to say that the spirit that moves the trigger of a flamethrower is the Holy Spirit. It is a lie to say that learning to kill is learning to be Christ-like. It is a lie to say that learning to drive a bayonet into the heart of another is motivated from having put on the mind of Christ. Militarized Christianity is a lie. It is radically out of conformity with the teaching, life, and spirit of Jesus. Now, brothers and sisters, on the anniversary of this terrible atrocity carried out by Christians, I must be the first to say that I made a terrible mistake. I was had by the father of lies. I participated in the big ecumenical lie of the Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox churches. I wore the uniform. I was part of the system. When I said Mass over there I put on those beautiful vestments over my uniform. (When Father Dave Becker left the Trident submarine base in 1982 and resigned as Catholic chaplain there, he said, “Every time I went to Mass in my uniform and put the vestments on over my uniform, I couldn’t help but think of the words of Christ applying to me: Beware of wolves in sheep’s clothing.”) AUGUST 17, 2011

continued also departed, leaving the group a trio. This album produced several more hit singles, including "992 Arguments," "Sunshine," "Time To Get Down," and the #1 pop smash, "Love Train". During the remainder of the 1970s the O'Jays continued releasing hit singles, including "Put Your Hands Together," "For the Love of Money," "Give the People What They Want", "Let Me Make Love To You", "I Love Music," "Livin' for the Weekend,” "Message in Our Music" and "Darlin' Darlin' Baby (Sweet Tender Love)". Original member William Powell died of cancer in 1977 at age 35. After adding Sammy Strain (of Little Anthony and the Imperials), the O'Jays continued recording, though with limited success. 1978's "Use ta Be My Girl" was their final Top Five hit, though they continued placing songs on the R&B charts throughout the 1980s. The O'Jays success was not confined to the United States, as they also logged up nine hit singles in the United Kingdom. In 1992, Sammy Strain left the group, and returned to the Imperials, to be replaced by Nathaniel Best, and later, by Eric Grant. In 2005, the O'Jays were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On On June 28, 2009, at the 2009 BET Award Show in the Shrine Auditorium the O'Jays were honored with BET's 2009 Life Time Achievement Award. On October 30, 2010, the group performed at Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert's Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear in Washington, D.C.
SCHOOL DAZE continued pay me, and I’m gone. Those who profess to represent us in politics and in leadership need to be reminded that we are not pawns in a money shuffle or games of political wrangling. We are looking for honesty and integrity, commitment and real loyalty to our best interests. We’re looking for those who will serve us for love as well as money, and without the latter if necessary, until the inevitable flow of divine grace bestows and reciprocates the wealth that no charlatan can take away. These are the ties that bind…the cause celebre around which we can rally in times of danger and attack. Those who ally themselves with our enemies should expect inevitable betrayal, and know that when they come for you…they may have you.
As an Air Force chaplain I painted a machine gun in the loving hands of the nonviolent Jesus, and then handed this perverse picture to the world as truth. I sang “Praise the Lord” and passed the ammunition.
