Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar Jersey retired in Toronto By Geoerge Radney Roberto Alomar became the first Toronto Blue Jay player to be inducted into major leagues baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. Roberto earned the majority of his success in Toronto including five of his 12 All-Star Game selections, five of his ten Gold Gloves, one of his four Silver Slugger Awards, two ALCS Championships, ALCS MVP in 1992 and, two World Series Championships all with the Toronto Blue Jays. In a Challenger Community Newspaper exclusive interview, I asked Roberto how he was able to give 100 percent everyday on the baseball field. “I got my work ethic from my dad, who I watched everyday come to the ball park Alomar (left) and Radney and prepare to play at a high level,” he said. “My father played hard everyday, and I idolize and just by watching him play, I want to be just like him. He’s always been my hero. I’ve been blessed to be able to play for this organization, I’m also proud to be Puerto Rican, and honored by this ceremony. “I will always have respect for former Toronto Blue Jay manager Cito Gaston,” he continued. “He was my mentor when I came here. He let me play my game. Cito is a person that was not only a manager but a close friend. For him to be up on the podium, I thank him for that because he means a lot to me.” Roberto Alomar is a lifetime .300 hitter, and is considered by most to be the best second baseman of all-time. He’s the third Puerto Rican to be inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. Roberto’s retired number 12 hangs from the rafters at the Rogers Centre alongside the Blue Jays’ World Series Championship banners. Roberto’s first cousin plays baseball for School of The Arts High School in Rochester, NY. He’s already considered a pro prospect for MLB! Congratulations Roberto!

ROCHESSTER KNOWS HOW TO PARTY! One phrase to describe last Saturday’s concert in Rochester – off the chain! Keith Sweat, The legendary O’Jays and The Whispers all did their thing (some folks said the Whispers stole the show) and the crowd was party-ready throughout the entire set! Lots of Buffalo folks made that trip and it was well worth the ride! KING IMAGES Page 2

BlackWNY.com Launches New Publication, But Challenger Community News Has nothing to Do With It.... Former State Senator Antoine Thompson and Will Jones published Black WNY.com’s first print edition last week, however there was considerable confusion launched as well when Alnisa Banks, the editor and publisher of The Challenger Community News, was listed in the paper as a contributing writer. “I wish Will and Antoine well,” said Ms. Banks, “but My hands are more than full trying to keep The Challenger Community News going, aside from the fact that I was not asked to be a contributing writer nor was I informed that I would be listed as such. It created considerable confusion and quite frankly, I was shocked to see my name in the paper. I was stopped by several people on the street a few days after it came out ‘congratulating’ me on my new publication. Others called our office and expressed surprise and wondered if Black WNY was the new Challenger. Listing my name sent false, misleading signals. “My allegiance has been and always will be with the Challenger Community News,” she continued. “The Challenger is an institution which must be maintained. I had nothing to do with the publication of Blackwny.com and I expressed my concern to Mr. Jones last week. He assured me my name would be removed in future editions.” Ms. Banks and The Challenger have been long time supporters of Mr. Thompson’s political career. She also worked in his office briefly and on his campaign last year. Mr. Jones was affiliated with the Challenger, serving in several capacities, for many years.

The consultant has advised the BMHA that the testing data indicates that, as to air quality, fiber levels are all well below the state and federal action levels. Air testing was performed inside and at the perimeter of the project site and at close locations of public use including the athletic field, school, and hospital. The testing confirms that the air is safe and clear at Kensington Heights. Soil testing was also performed and the report states that no asbestos was detected in the soil and no asbestos was observed by the inspector at the areas of public use around the Kensington Heights project.

Dr. Williams Resigns

Last Wednesday the Buffalo Board of Education agreed to accept the resignation of Schools Superintendent Dr. James Williams by a vote of 7 to 2. The Board had initially agreed that he would remain at the helm until he retired next June, however in a surprising turn of events, proceedings to remove him before that stated time began, as Dr. Williams became the scapegoat for everything wrong with Buffalo Public Schools. After he “resigned” he spoke to the community at a regular “We Are Women Warriors” meeting where he urged parents to send their children to school – especially kindergarten and Pre-K students. Early education he said, is the foundation of success later in a child’s educational journey.

NEWS BRIEFS

Has U.S. Become a Food Stamp Nation? NEW YORK – Genna Saucedo supervises cashiers at a Wal-Mart in Pico Rivera, California, but her wages aren’t enough to feed herself and her 12-year-old son. Ms. Saucedo, who earns US$9.70 an hour for about 26 hours a week and lives with her mother, is one of the many Americans who survive because of government handouts in what has rapidly become a food stamp nation. Altogether, there are now almost 46 million people in the United States on food stamps, roughly 15% of the population. That’s an increase of 74% since 2007, just before the financial crisis and a deep recession led to mass job losses. At the same time, the cost doubled to reach US$68-billion in 2010 —

more than a third of the amount the U.S. government received in corporate income tax last year — which means the program has started to attract the attention of some Republican lawmakers looking for ways to cut the nation’s budget deficit. While there are clearly some cases of abuse by people who claim food stamps but don’t really need them, for many Americans like Saucedo there is little current alternative if they are to put food on the table while paying rent and utility bills. “It’s kind of sad that even though I’m working that I need to have government assistance. I have asked them to please put me on full-time so I can have benefits,” said the 32-year-old. She’s worked at Wal-Mart for nine

months, and applied for food stamps as soon as her probation ended. She said plenty of her colleagues are in the same situation. “If they’re working, they often think they can’t get help. But people can’t support their families on $10, $11, $12 an hour jobs, especially when you add transport, clothes, rent.” said Carolyn McLaughlin, executive director of BronxWorks, a social services organization in New York. The maximum amount a family of four can receive in food stamps is US$668 a month. They can only be used to buy food — though not hot food — and for plants and seeds to grow food.

Strauss-Kahn New York sexual assault case dismissed A New York judge has dismissed the sexual assault case against former IMF director Dominique Strauss-Kahn. The move came as prosecutors cited doubts over the credibility of his accuser, 32-year-old hotel maid Nafissatou Diallo. Mr Strauss-Kahn, 62, was accused in May of attacking the African immigrant as she entered his hotel room to clean it. The ruling means he is a free man, though he still faces a civil suit The dismissal of criminal charges at the New York State Supreme Court will take effect once the judge rules on an appeal against the move. Mr Strauss-Kahn, considered a French presidential contender before the case, arrived for the hearing in lower Manhattan on Tuesday in a six-car motorcade with his wife Anne Sinclair. Outside, about two dozen placardwaving protesters denounced the result, their cries audible from the packed courtroom on the 13th floor. The combustible mix of sex, race and class presented by the case with a civil case now pending, interest will probably rumble on in America if not in Europe. Ms. Diallo claimed Mr Strauss-Kahn had confronted her in his luxury hotel suite in the city on 14 May and forced her to perform oral sex on him.

HEALTH MATTERS

4 Over-Prescribed Treatments and Tests What doctors do is important. Equally important: what they don’t do. To keep patients healthier, prevent unnecessary treatment (and side effects), and save health-care dollars, a panel of doctors is urging their colleagues to follow top-five lists of medical don’ts. Here are some of those tests and procedures — and the go-slow approaches that are preferable. Lower-Back Pain Don’t do an imaging test within the first six weeks except in special cases. “The vast majority of back pain goes away on its own,” says Shannon Brownlee, author of Overtreated: Why Too Much Medicine Is Making Us Sicker and Poorer. “A back image is not going to help you heal faster, but it can mislead your doctor into thinking that something is wrong, which can lead to costly and unnecessary surgery.” Of course, sometimes tests and treatments are unavoidable (say, if you’re also having bladder problems), so make sure your doctor listens carefully to all your symptoms, says Jerome Groopman, MD, coauthor of the forthcoming Your Medical Mind: How to Decide What Is Right for You. “A really good doctor doesn’t follow a cookbook,” Dr. Groopman says. Bone-Density Screening Don’t do a routine bone-density test for women under 65 or men under 70. The standard test, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), measures the mineral content of your bones, but “for premenopausal women, routine screening is a huge scam,” says Brownlee. “It often leads them to take osteoporosis drugs, which is very controversial at best for that age group. At that age, you don’t need a DEXA scan to tell you what you should be doing to prevent osteoporosis.” PLUS: 8 Old Wives' Tales: Which Should You Believe Electrocardiogram (ECG) Screening Don’t do an annual test if risk is low. “If you don’t have symptoms and are at low risk for heart disease, chances are pretty good that the test is wrong if it says you do have a problem,” Brownlee says. Even so, your doctor will almost certainly feel compelled to follow up with more invasive tests that carry the risk of injury or even death. Sinus Infection Don’t give antibiotics for most cases of mild or moderate sinusitis. “Antibiotics are not ‘anti-every-

Re-Elect

kind-of-bug’ drugs,” Brownlee says. “They don’t work against viruses, and most sinus infections are caused by viruses.” Plus, overprescribing these drugs can produce stubborn new bacterial strains that antibiotics can’t fight — which can cause problems more serious than sinus trouble. Don’t ask for the hard stuff unless the sinus problem is severe or symptoms last longer than a week or get better and then worsen. (From Reader's Digest Magazine)

Attention Hair Salons: OSHA Issues Cancer Warning on Brazilian Blowouts In June 2011 the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a hazard alert to hair salons about potential formaldehyde exposure from working with Brazilian Blowout and other hair-smoothing products. The warning confirmed an initial investigation done by Oregon OSHA last fall, in which they sampled 105 various hair-smoothing products from 54 salons. Thirty-seven samples came from Brazilian blowout Acai Professional Smoothing solution, and they were found to have formaldehyde levels averaging 8.8%, even though they were labeled formaldehyde-free. OSHA requires anything above 0.1% to be listed on the label. Since the International Agency for Research on Cancer lists formaldehyde as a human carcinogen (cancer causing agent), how can you protect yourself? By banning strengtheners made with these products: Methylene glycol Formalin Methylene oxide Paraform Formic aldehyde Methanol Oxomethane Oxymethylene CAS Number 50-00-0

Rate of HIV Infection Among African-American Gay and Bisexual Men on the RIse The rate of HIV infection among African-American gay and bisexual men aged 18 to 29 increased 50 percent between 2006 and 2009, according to new data released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. the rise took place even as the overall number of new HIV infections in the US held steady at 50,000 cases per year.

arnetta Malcolm remembers that August day seven years ago very well. Following the huge funeral service for Rick James, the “King of Punk Funk,” at St. John Baptist Church in Buffalo, literally thousands of people converged on Martin Luther King Jr. Park for an historic musical tribute in his honor. That’s when it all started, recalled Malcolm, marketing consultant for Radio 1400 AM and co-chair along with Wade Hawkins of the annual Buffalo Funk Fest in James’ honor. Every August since his death in 2004 the Fest has taken place here. On Saturday, August 27, LaSalle Park will be jumping from 3 to 10 p.m. with a star studded remembrance featuring the original Stone City Band, songstress Val Young,, Evolution, the Old School B Boys, the All Star Band, The Exoutics and runway fashions from Bella Que and Lillie Pearl. We want to do a fitting tribute to Rick and think that everyone who has ever played with him should be lifted up... we invite anyone who’s ever worked with Rick to please come out to the park and join us...its a celebration of Rick and the late Teena Marie..two great entertainers.” Marnetta noted that the presence of Stone City, Rick’s back up band, and Val Young, who he “discovered” and produced, adds a special touch to this year’s event. “People just want to hear Rick’s stuff...they just want to hear his music... Stone City and Val will make the tribute extra special.” She also noted that both Rick’s brothers, Attorney and artist Leroy Johnson and Carmen Sims, along with his entire family, have always supported the event. She reminds fans that no tents are allowed in concert viewing area and there’s no parking on the grass. “We want everyone to come out and enjoy the music and take part in the love fest!” The official after party will be held at Pee Wee’s Variety Store, 2319 Main Street . Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith respond to split rumors: ‘We are still together’

“The rumors circulating about our relationship are completely false," Will and Jada Pinket said in a joint statement obtained by OnTheRedCarpet.com "We are still together, and our marriage is intact." A report surfaced on InTouch Weekly's website on Tuesday claiming that the couple had separated. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith married in December 1997 and have two children together.

ast week’s review of the Fantastic Voyage concert featuring Lakeside and local entertainers Dee Paris and the Old School B-Boys, was incomplete to say the least. Leon Russell, who followed the jazzy Miss Dee, also turned in an impressive performance. His rendition of the Spinners “Love Don’t Love Nobody” and Luther Vandross’ “Don’t You Know That” was solid. Russell, no stranger to the stage, has singing lead and background vocals for various groups for over 30 years - Sequin, 24kt Gold and The Untouchables, are just few. For the last several years he has served as the musical director for Godfather Promotions (helping to pick the acts and keeping things together) and has opened for such entertainers as the legendary Blue Magic, Ray Goodman and Brown, Ronnie Laws and Pieces of a Dream – all Godfather Promotions productions. Hats off to the talented Mr. Russell. And our apologies for last week’s omission.

SPEAK OUT!

Martin Luther King Is Getting A Monument, Let’s Now Build Something For Malcolm by Dr. Boyce Watkins As we prepare for the unveiling of the Washington memorial for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., it is important that we take a second to contextualize this extraordinary event. Dr. King deserves to be celebrated next to other great heroes of American history, and it is a proud testament to the growth and maturity of our nation that Dr. King has been honored in this way. Most of us also know that an equally extraordinary American, Malcolm X, has not been given the same respect as Dr. King. Malcolm’s grave site doesn’t look like it holds one of the greatest men in American history; it looks as common and anonymous as the one next to it. There is very little mention of Malcolm in public school history classes, and Malcolm’s contributions are not considered essential to the social evolution of America. Millions of African Americans who attend cushy (and excessively commercialized) dinners and galas for Dr. King every year don’t even know Malcolm X’s birthday. Let’s be clear: Malcolm X was the George Washington for Black America. He was a man who gave his life to stand against unspeakable tyranny and demanded nothing less than true equality, freedom and empowerment for the people he loved. The fact that America has left Malcolm’s legacy in the basement of our history books is largely a testament to the fact that our nation still does not accept the principles of decency and equity that Malcolm demanded for people of color. Nearly a half century after the death of Malcolm X, our nation has achieved what we thought would be the pinnacle of integration: We have our first black president and Attorney General. We have countless Black doctors, lawyers, professors, and corporate executives. We even have African Americans in leadership positions within the Republican Party. But in light of the Black American gains from integration, we still find ourselves with the highest unemployment rates, our wealth was decimated during the Great Recession from the last three years, we are faced with a mass incarceration epidemic that has reached holocaust proportions, and we endure educational systems that lead our children to hug on the tree of perpetual ignorance. In addition to being last in line for educational and economic opportunities, we have almost no ability to control our images in media, as nearly every major black online media outlet is owned by a big (mostly white) corporation. We’ve found that having black faces in high places on Capitol Hill and elsewhere means almost nothing if you are not truly powerful at your spiritual, psychological, and economic core. Dr. King helped us to fight for our freedom….Malcolm X taught us how to fight for our independence: A man who is free, but not independent is ultimately a puppet to those who control the things he needs to survive. If there were ever a time that Black people needed to embrace the spirit of Malcolm X, that time would be RIGHT NOW. African Americans had long hoped to be invited to the Dinner Party of Integration, but we found that our meal would be served next to the toilet. Malcolm warned us that achieving integration without earning some degree of genuine autonomy would only result in second-class citizenship; you can’t live in someone else’s house and expect to move around the furniture. Even your friends lose respect for you if you can’t take care of yourself. America’s inability to appreciate the legacy of Malcolm X is, in many ways, symptomatic of the fact that racism still flows in the social veins of our society. Malcolm gave America the tough love that it needed, and our nation has rejected it the way an alcoholic’s body rejects fruits, vegetables and vitamins. The day that America learns to appreciate Malcolm is the day when the country will have learned to appreciate all of us. Black America needed both Martin and Malcolm equally, and most of us know this. So, as we put on our party hats and celebrate the unveiling of the King Memorial in Washington DC, it might behoove us to build a Monument of the Mind in honor of the brilliant and powerful legacy of the great Malcolm X. In fact, demanding that our community celebrate and respect Malcolm just as much as Martin would be a tremendous step toward obtaining the independence of thought that Malcolm wanted all of us to have. There are at least two great dreams in Black American history and neither have been fulfilled. We can’t let either dreamer disappear from our collective consciousness. Martin Luther King convinced the rest of America to accept us, but Malcolm X reminds us that it’s just as important for us to accept ourselves. Page 10

Reflections on Dr. Williams’ Departure...

Dear Editor, With the drama that was Williams finally coming to a conclusion I can only say, as a parent of two Buffalo School children, GOOD! I'm just sorry we gotta pay you to leave! I do not believe that Dr. J is by any means the reason for all of our woes in the school system but it always bothers me the way we are suppose to still support Black people in his position merely because they are Black. James Williams has been a LOUSY superintendent for our children and he was lousy before he got here. Before he came to Buffalo he was messing up the school system in Dayton, Ohio and got fired. Anyone whose interested, whether a supporter or detractor, can easily look up how he did Dayton and know that we're not losing anything of value by getting rid of him finally. His supporters shouldn't feel bad for him though. It reportedly cost Dayton around a quarter of a million dollars to get rid of him and as Sister Sabirah noted Williams makes it clear : "I'm the easiest person to get rid of. If you want to get rid of me, you don't have to go through all this calling a meeting. It's simple. Sit down, cut the deal, I'm outta here." Spoken like a true "Champion of the Children!" Not having a "single Black man or woman in a position of authority that can make any decisions without at least two other White folks approving it" as Brother McIntyre states doesn't bother me either because when has it ever been otherwise anyway? America is a White country and they allow "darkies" to "run things" as long as the "darkie" in question does what they're told or as long as he/she is a true believer in their mission and goals. James Williams has been the Executive Director of an association called the National Independent Private School Association (NIPSA) while he was the Buffalo Public School's Superintendent. It could appear to be a conflict of interest in being an Executive Director of a Private School association and being a Superintendent of Public Schools but to clarify what NIPSA is about here are some excerpts from their mission statement: "There are many associations for educators, but only one for educators who are also entrepreneurs..." "There is a significant difference, however, between ourselves and other school administrators: we are also entrepreneurs..." "We cherish autonomy, We can act, unfettered by Boards or Trustees or elected officials. Of course that does not mean that we have no one to answer to for our actions. Far from it, Continued Page 13

People of the Fillmore District, I’m Back! Dear Editor: On August 5th the Board of Elections ruled me off the ballot. Out of the 917 names I submitted on July 14, 2011, only 497 names were good, making us off by “3” names. We only needed 500. I knew I had well over 600 good names set aside before I reached out to ask for help with carrying my petitions. I believe one must lead by example. I followed the instructions laid down by the State New York Board of Elections. – one Democrat and the other Republican -I will see you in court. They tried to remove me from the ballot for an oversight on my part; clearly no reason to invalidate my petitions. The plan was so the voters would not have a HERBERT choice. I give all the glory to my Lord, who teaches us that “faith without work is dead.” I worked my butt off getting those names! A State Supreme Court Justice ruled on Thursday, August 11, 2011 and ordered the Board to reinstate the name Samuel A. Herbert back on the ballot as a candidate for the Fillmore District Common Council seat. In this up and coming Democratic September 13 Primary, Justice Donna M. Siwek found I submitted the required number of signatures on my designating petitions to qualify for the ballot. I would like to thank my legal team headed by J. Glen Davis for a job well done. I would also like to thank those who helped financially. It is important to know that only registered voters who are Democrats and who live within the Fillmore district can cast their votes in this race. To me this is the General election because I only have one line – the Democratic line. In 2007, 721 folks cast their vote for me; however we have to win the Primary and we need 3,000 voters of the district to come out and vote for Samuel A. Herbert. David Franczyk must be removed. After more than 25 years it’s time for real change. The time of the Career Professional Politician is over. Never again should we allow their selfish heads to rise up. For 40 yeaers I have lived in the Fillmore district under the leadership of Mr. Franczyk. Our neighborhoods are dying and crying for new leadership with vision. Ray Charles, Stevie wonder and Helen Keller can take a walking tour of the Fillmore district and they all would agree they see no positive development.. To the African American community at large – we should come together and remove Mr. Franczyk. I’m asking for your help. I can’t win this race alone. In 2007 I received no help but still pulled over 40% of the vote. Please don’t let that happen this year! We don’t have much time to put this campaign together. I need people, help and money! I can be contracted at 716-847-0410 or saherbert1@verizon.net In the end the people of Fillmore need real leadership. Can we win? Yes! We can win with hard work! -Samuel A. Herbert

….And Another One Bites The Dust: The Saga of Dr. James A. Williams

Black Star News Editorial

Oil, Power and The NATO War of Aggression on Libya

(Ed Note: Fighting in Tripoli intensified this morning as the rebls continued their attempt to seize the capital from Muammar Gaddafi's forces. Some of the heaviest clashes were reported to be near the entrance to Gaddafi's Bab al-Aziziya compound The Guardian Newspaper described an "almighty fight" in the centre of the city above the crump of mortar shells. The battle was likened to the urban warfare in Beirut in the 1980s.)

With superior firepower more than a century ago the Italian invaders mowed down Ethiopians, mostly civilians and drove emperor Menelik II into submission. The newspapers of the day including The New York Times celebrated "Italy's Great Victory" in Africa, saying the defeat of the Abyssinians meant "civilization" had prevailed over "barbarity." Africa would now be opened up to profitable Western commerce, the Times opined. Then in 1896 Menelik II, together with his wife Empress Taytu leading the charges, struck with ferocious power and courage. Menelik II destroyed an entire Italian army of an original 10,000 troops, vanquishing nearly half, including most of the leading officers and capturing half of the army. That was Ethiopia's greatest hour and indeed Africa's finest moment against European imperial aggression. Gen. Oreste Baratieri, the Italian commander was later court-martialed in Italy and charged with cowardice for the defeat. Today NATO forces, including Italy, again press Western conquest and are poised to seize control of Libya through proxy "rebels", and its tremendous oil wealth--more than 44 billion barrels of known proven oil reserves and vast quantities of natural gas. Italy was once also colonial power in Libya, where as occupiers a genocide of Libyans was carried out; Libyans valiantly fought back led by Omar Muhktar who was captured and executed. Eventually the Italians were thrown out. Muammar al-Quathafi might meet a similar fate, possibly at the hands of the NATO "rebels." Italy has returned with European allies and with the U.S., covetous of the country's vast riches. Libya is so wealthy that each household could get a check or more than $2 million if all the oil and gas wealth was sold at today's prices. (*Libya has the largest oil reserves in Africa. Before the NATO attack it was the world’s 12th largest exporer; delivering more than 1.5 million barrels per day mostly to European markets. That's the true reason why U.S. President Barack Obama, U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron and French AUGUST 24, 2011

President Nicholas Sarkozy were determined to oust Muammar alQuathafi and even to have him killed. If these Western leaders cared so much about African lives, NATO would have carried out war against al-Shabab in Somalia; the Western leaders hold al-Shabab responsible for the political malaise that's now left Somalia helpless to deal with famine there. Tens of thousands of Somalians could die from starvation. Similarly, why hasn't NATO waged war on Uganda's and Rwanda's armies and allied militias that have caused the deaths of a reported 7 million Congolese since 1997 and also raped tens of thousands of Congolese women and men if there is a mission to save African lives? What's more, when is the last time the Western leaders spoke of saving civilian lives? How were civilian lives saved by NATO's 24 x 7 bombardments? The pretext collapsed with reported NATO atrocities including the massacre of 85 civilians, including children, in Zlitan. The NATO war of aggression on Libya was well defined when the leader of the Transitional National Council in Benghazi Mustafa Abdel Jalil told The Financial Times that oil concessions, post-Quathafi, would be doled out to the West based on the amount of help each country gave the so-called "rebels" in deposing al-Quathafi. So brazen was the invitation to loot that Russia's Vladimir Putin was spoton when he called the NATO invasion a medieval call to crusade against Libya. NATO's maximum destruction may also have been designed with an eye towards future reconstruction contracts for Western countries. NATO's bombardment escalated after President Obama, Prime Minister Cameron and President Sarkozy wrote a joint Op-Ed article including in The New York Times --which as it did in the 19th century, continues cheerleading war on Africa. The Op-Ed in part stated al-Quathafi "must go" and "go for good." In essence it was a Fatwa. Thereafter, NATO started bombarding al-Quathafi's residences, killing one son and three grand children. In recent week's NATO has not even pretended about wanting to "save" innocent civilians. NATO has been responsible for what U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich characterized as possible "war crimes" in Libya. Rep. Kucinich wrote a letter to the International Criminal Court

W (ICC) asking for the court to investigate NATO commanders. A genuine and legitimate domestic uprising is one thing; a NATO and Western financed "rebellion" is another monster--usurping and corrupting home grown insurrection. NATO now has a blank check on Libya. While media focused only on reported abuses by the Libyan army, the "rebels'" human rights abuses have been exposed all along: summary killings of suspected opponents; lynchings and beheadings, including of Black Libyans; and ethnic cleansing of the entire Black population of Misurata, reported in The Wall Street Journal on June 21, 2011 and ignored by CNN and The New York Times. The "rebels" also murdered their own commander, Gen. Abdel Fattah Younes and burned his body; the residents of Tripoli have legitimate fears about a bloodbath should the Obama-, Sarkozy- and Cameron-backed "rebels" seize power. In fact it was after Gen. Younes's murder, when the "rebellion" seemed to be unraveling, that NATO took full control of the fight. The major media, including the Times, ignored the "rebel" atrocities not wanting to "tarnish" their image; media, thereby preferred to ignore abuses so long as the end result was al-Quathafi's ouster. Meanwhile, the African Union peace plan, calling for a ceasefire, creation of a constitution, and democratic elections, was totally ignored by President Obama, P.M. Cameron and President Sarkozy. Massive bloodshed and destruction could have been avoided had President Obama picked up the phone and told Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to publicly endorse the AU plan. Yet the Western leaders were always intent on making it clear that Africa's fate, as was during the Berlin Conference and partition of Africa in 1885, is still determined today in Western capitals. As early as the 1960s the visionary Kwame Nkrumah had declared that the independence of Ghana and of individual African countries had no meaning unless all Africa unified and created a continental army and command. He said otherwise African countries would not be able to protect their independence and resources.

hen Buffalo School Superintendent, Dr. James A. Williams exploded with, a few months earlier, “Chris, I am tired of your craziness!” I knew that Dr. Williams’ days here were severely limited. Dr. Williams was referring to At- large school board member, Chris Jacobs, who happens to be related to the very rich and powerful Jacobs family and who is a millionaire in his own right. All that was needed was an issue or problem to connect negatively to Dr. Williams and that issue was nicely provided with the movement to boycott the schools. I am not saying for one minute that those who initiated the school boycott were in cahoots with the Charter School-driven ReformEd group, but members of that group attached themselves like leeches to the school boycott drive and played it for all that it was worth. For those who attended the meeting at Buffalo Academy of visual and Performing Arts, one could see that many of those who were in attendance neither taught nor had children in the Buffalo Public Schools. Many of these individuals were connected to the state and national charter school movement and they came to the meeting in Buffalo from places as far away as Chicago, Illinois and Washington, D.C. Here you had charter school advocates, who put a premium of school attendance and discipline, openly and loudly proclaiming that Buffalo Public School students should not go to school on a regular school day. There was something seriously suspicious in the decision by them to support a school boycott. A better and a more positive educational move would have been more productive if they had advocated that the parents and guardians of these same students ‘flood’ every school in Buffalo and have a sit down protest right in the middle of the schools’ gyms and hallways. That would have been less controversial and the children would not have lost a day or a half day of school. Heck, some of the parents might would have gotten a chance to meet their children’s teachers for the very first time! Again, let me state for the record, I am not against charNkrumah's warning fell on deaf ears; ironically, al-Quathafi was even more detested by Britain and France because of his drive in recent years for African unity. Libya, standing alone, withstood the full force of NATO attacks for six months. NATO never would have invaded a unified Africa with a single army as envisioned by Nkrumah. African countries should ponder the lessons of Libya. Libya offers a great lesson for the entire continent. Remain divided at your own peril.

ter schools; I just believe that they should be funded separately from the money pot that funds the traditional schools. The people who are pushing charter BETTY school and vouchers for private schools GRANT saw a ‘chink in the armor’ and they went in for the kill. All they needed way a time and way to go after Dr. Williams and not have it lead directly back to them. The school boycott was an opportunity that they were not going to miss taking advantage of. And Dr. Williams, with his larger-than-life personality and his ‘arrogant’ demeanor, did not help his situation at all. I sincerely believed that Dr. Williams relied too heavily on his newly made corporate friends in Buffalo and the elected officials, especially the African American elected officials, to have his back. Sad to say, but he got a dose of reality when the only elected officials to show up at his termination hearing, to speak in his defense, were Councilmember Darius Pridgen, soon-to- be City Comptroller Mark Schroeder and this writer. Former public school teacher, Mrs. Eva Doyle and about 15 citizens came to speak but it was embarrassing to see who was not there. ‘They’ always contend that history has a way of repeating itself. I am reminded of the time when former Buffalo School Superintendent, Dr. James Harris was in a similar situation. Even after he left, Dr. Harris was hounded by members of the local media every time they found out that he had applied for another job. I am hoping that they will not inflict that same level of harassment and disrespect on Dr. Williams. For every decision that Dr. Williams made, he had a majority of board members signing on. All of a sudden, they were distancing themselves from him. Since 2005, Dr. Williams’ most loyal and firmest supporters on the Buffalo Board of Education were Florence Johnson and Chris Jacobs. Now, all of a sudden, to most of the members on the board, he has become toxic. In the not-so-recent past, they took care of him and he, in turn, took care of them. From getting principals’ jobs for their close relatives to being awarded improper professional services contracts to running for political offices, Dr. Williams appeased them and now that they have gotten what they wanted, they have decided that he can now be thrown under the bus! The Buffalo Board of Education will meet Wednesday, August 24th, at its regular time of 5:30 p.m. to choose Continued Page 13 Page 11

Remembering…

Today I spent a long time remembering, reflecting on past PRP2 programs, before I started writing this article/ announcement for this month’s Prisoners Are People Too monthly meeting. I looked back over the years of programming for the months of August and September to review what topics have been shared in the past. The list was short, as some topics have been repeated, but from a different vantage point every time. The importance of commemorating “Black August” has been mentioned KARIMA several times, AMIN as we have recognized George Jackson and other conscious brothers behind bars who stood up for truth, resisted oppression, and made an effort to maintain dignity while imprisoned. “The Attica Rebellion” of September, 1971 has been acknowledged and explored several times. That event, forty years ago, put a spotlight on the evils of incarceration like never before. Also highlighted more than once, was the impact of COINTELPRO, this government’s counterintelligence program, used against its own citizens. Documentary films about these topics have opened our eyes and opened our minds. “Encountering Attica,” introduced us to a work-in-progress being produced by U.B. law professor, Dr. Terri Miller and her students; “Uprising at Attica,” reminded us that “Attica is all of us;” “Murder on a Reservation,” highlighted the plight of Native American political prisoner, Leonard Peltier; “Legacy of Torture: The War Against the Black Liberation Movement,” told the story of the San Francisco 8 who have suffered more than 30 years of FBI repression; “Mumia: A Case for

Reasonable Doubt,” detailed the case against Mumia Abu Jamal who has been on death row since 1982; and “Cointelpro: The FBI’s War on Black America,” acknowledged the many ways that the FBI has worked to discredit, disrupt, and destroy certain individuals and political groups in this country, especially those connected with Black liberation. Our meetings during August and September of this year will be no different, except that PRP2 is making a concerted effort to encourage more young people to see our upcoming films, hear our passionate and knowledgeable guest speakers and learn this history. What happened three and four decades ago is inextricably related to the mass incarceration that we witness today. The next meeting of Prisoners Are People Too, Inc. will take place on Monday, August 29, from 6:30pm – 8:30pm at the Pratt-Willlert Community Center, 422 Pratt Street in Buffalo. The documentary being screened is “Cointelpro 101” (Freedom Archives 2010). Once again, we’ll be reminded of the FBI’s treachery as it has sought to infiltrate, annihilate, intimidate, and incarcerate using lies, burglaries, harassment, and murder to impede progressive movements in this country. Our guest speakers will be Sheila Hayes, Brooke Reynolds, Michael Kuzma, and Richard Morrisroe. bassist, record producer, arranger, and composer during his long career. One of the most popular artists on the Motown label during the late 1970s and early 1980s, James was famous for his brand of “punk funk” music and his trademark cornrow braids. As time went on, the legendary James was given the unofficial title The King of Punk-Funk. This year the Original Stone City Band prepared for its first major tour in over 25 years. The Original Stone City Band began their rise to fame as the recording and touring band for the King of Punk Funk, Rick James in 1978. They were responsible for the music you hear on recording by Teena Marie, The Temptations, The Mary Jane Girls, Smokey Robinson, MC Hammer, and Eddie Murphy – memorable songs like “Super Freak,” “Standing On The Top,” “All Night Long,” “Fire and Desire,” “Give It to Me Baby,” “Mary Jane,” “You & I,” “Cold Blooded,” “Ebony Eyes,” and “Party All The Time” – just to name a few. Stone City Percussionist, Nate “Guido” Hughes talked candidly about Teena Marie and the glory years with Rick James. “Teena was special, and a very talented musician and songwriter,” Hughes said. “I remember working on her first Motown album entitled ‘Wild and Peaceful’. When she stepped behind the mike and sang ‘Déjà vu, we all knew that she was the real deal, and the rest is history.”

COINTELPRO reared its ugly head in the late 1950’s and was extremely aggressive during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Make no mistake; with the advent of the Patriot Act and Homeland Security, COINTELPRO is NOT dead. Our August meeting will be about remembering but it will challenge us to take a good look at our present and our future. AUGUST 24, 2011

ATIYA JOHNSON: A Defendant’s Story Buffalo, New York – Atiya Johnson, one of 33 defendants in Buffalo’s recent federal prescription drug case, will be sentenced September 2. Attorney Robert Fogg ESQ., LLM, served as Ms. Johnson’s defense attorney. “Atiya was not part of a crew or gang. She was a gullible, young, single mother financially down and out. She has been condemned and blasted in the news because the media does not know the full story,” he stated. Ms. Johnson, a 29 year-old student and hairdresser at the time of her arrest last July, pled guilty to conspiring to sell OxyContin on April 28, 2011. Johnson was recently convicted on only one count out of a four-count indictment. “Atiya was active for no more than four months before the arrest, and handled only a few transactions,” Fogg recounted. “She was strategically recruited at a barbeque, and unwittingly helped finance an ongoing criminal enterprise.” Working towards creating a better

life for her child, Johnson attended school full-time and worked part-time. She was studying nursing, and was struggling to stay afloat financially. “She could not get steady work and continue school. She sought help from the Department of Social Services and was told she would receive no aid beyond food stamps, unless she quit school and sought full-time employment,” Fogg said. Atiya Johnson admits to making a serious error in judgment by allowing the recruiters to talk her into their scheme. Far from obstinate, Johnson was one of the first defendants to speak with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and was also one of the first to enter a guilty plea. Johnson is remorseful for all that has happened. Attorney Fogg believes that Atiya’s story is an indication of how almost anyone can get caught up in a case like this. “Atiya Johnson was only one small segment of one large tentacle of a vast multi-branched, communitybased, illegal prescription drug delivery system.” The proliferation of illegal prescription drug use among people from all walks of life is fast becoming an epidemic. “Since physicians cannot physiologically prove or disprove pain, pain killers are frequently prescribed based upon the observations of the patient’s physical manifestation of

planning on selecting. They will then give this interim superintendent the power to sign documents even before Dr. Williams leaves on September 25th, his official day of resignation. How blatantly disrespectful can they be? How can a single school administration have two superintendents signing off and approving things? Dr. Williams is the only superintendent until such time as he retires, resigns or is fired! What the board is anticipating doing, it seems in my humble opinion, to be illegal. But who is crying out or who is watching and monitoring the actions of the board of education? I am hoping that those who are promoting good school, good teachers, good parents and good attendance, will now step up to the plate to make sure that the Buffalo Board of Education is not overstepping its power and authority by making bad and anti-community decisions.
