OUTRAGE! Protestors marched from Ciry Hall to the News.

Community leaders protest News shooting coverage : Charge Insensitivity, Racism There were at least two major rallies last week in protest of the Buffalo News and its coverage of the victims of the City Grill mass shooting. Outraged members of the African American community, led by activist Darnell Jackson along with prominent elders and past political leaders David Collins and George K. Arthur, held a rally and press conference at 10:30 a.m. last Thursday. Later that day, at about 5 p.m., another protest, march and rally, led by Elijah Brian , marched from City Hall to the News where they demanded justice and fairness. “We’re going to protest every week and every day if we have to until we get justice from the Buffalo News,” said Jackson. Former Council President George K. Arthur called the News’ latest tactic an outrage; yet nothing new. “They did it to us when we were on the Council,” he said, recalling “bogus” polls and other underhanded tactics to ake the Black elected officials look bad. He said that historically the News has been insensitive and racially biased towards the African American community. “We African Americans that are not connected to the families that are killed, but we felt their pain,” said Buffalo’s Sam Herbert. The article in question was a front page story published last Sunday, in which the criminal histories of seven of the eight victims were detailed, resulting in cries of racist irrelevance, insensitivity, and a disrespectful “low blow” to the dead and their families and loved ones. Many in the community they say they will not continue supporting the newspaper. Buffalo News Editor and Vice President Margaret Sullivan Darnell reads from a prepared speech while addressed the issue in a CNN George K. Arthur looks on. interview, calling it “a horrible tragedy.” She is expected to attend a public meeting this evening (Sept. 1) at True Bethel Baptist Church to address, and answer questions from the community. Activist Darnell Jackson has vowed to protest her appearance until certain demands by his group are met. Jackson is calling for a public apology from the newspaper to the shooting victims’ families. He also wants more African Americans on the newspaper’s editorial staff and equal coverage when it comes to reporting criminal rap sheets. He made it clear that he was not targeting True Bethel or Rev. Pridgen. “As if it’s not bad enough to suffer over the loss of a family member. Here you have to read the paper about stuff that took place years ago that has nothing to do with the issue,” said former Buffalo Common Councilman David Collins. “Write letters to the Buffalo News. Let them know how we feel. Let them know that we will not tolerate them disrespecting our community,” added 7th District Erie County Legislator Betty Jean Grant.

Freedom Party Makes the Ballot for November Elections: Candidates Return to Buffalo September 11! All the hard work has paid off and the Freedom Party is officially on the Ballot in the November elections, despite a New York City Councilman, who filed a General Objection petition to challenge the 43,500 signatures the party turned in on August 18. A General Objection petition is simply a form that informs the Board of Election that the filer has a problem with said petition or signatures. Well now since the filer, a gentleman named Fielder had not seen the signatures nor any of the signees in person, it seems strange that he would waste his time filing objection forms when the Freedom Party petition package had almost three times the number of signatures it needed to qualify for the ballot. I think the real reason for Councilman Fielder’s objection was divulged by him a few days later. Councilman Fielder stated that he felt that it was his moral BETTY JEAN duty to file an objection th the freedom Party’s petition because GRANT the candidates running on the Freedom Party line was all Black or Latinos and that no Whites were chosen or selected to run. This statement came from a man who apparently had no problem when the the Republican, Democratic or Carl Paladino’s Taxpayer Party announced their party’s slate of candidates and they all were of European descent. Mr. Fielder may have a problem with Barron’s Freedom Party’s move but I do not think that race of the candidates was the primary factor. I tend to think that Fielder’s problem with Charles Barron might have been personal and he just used the ruse to challenge the Freedom Party’s signatures as a vendetta to irk Mr. Barron. Well, common sense must have struck Councilman Fielder because, a few days later, he dropped his insane move to try and derail the Freedom Party’s goal of

HEALTH MATTERS

The Healing Power of Black Seed Oil T

he earliest written reference to black seed is found in the book of Isaiah in the Old Testament. (Isaiah 28:25). Black seed has been traditionally and successfully used in the Middle and Far East countries for centuries to treat ailments including bronchial asthma and bronchitis, rheumatism and related inflammatory diseases, to increase milk production in nursing mothers, to treat digestive disturbances, to support the body’s immune system, to promote digestion and elimination, and to fight parasitic infestation. Its oil has been used to treat skin conditions such as eczema and boils and is used topically to treat cold symptoms. The many uses of black seed has earned for this medicinal herb the Arabic name meaning “the seed of blessing.” Black seed, in its complete, natural form, acts on the principle of assisting the body’s own natural healing process in overcoming illness or maintaining

health. It works on the part or system of the body affected without disturbing its natural balance elsewhere. The effect of black seed’s combined nutitrional and medicinal value is that not only does it help relieve the current condition at hand, but also helps the body build further resistance against future ailments or disease. How Does Black Seed Benefit? The majority of our health problems have the same causes- infection by microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi. Black seed is effective at treating the body as a whole and fights the actual cause of the symptoms. Black seed regulates too weak or too strong reactions of the immune system and is excellent for treating chronic, allergic and hormonal diseases. It uses are many as well as its benefit. Black seed support metabolism, improve digestion, and lowers blood sugar levels. It is used to dispel worms and parasites from intestinal track. It is useful in soothing bronchitis and coughs, increase body tone, stimulates menstrual periods, increases the flow of breast milk, provides quick energy, increases sperm count, calms the

nervous system, encourages hair growth and retards hair fall out, prevents skin wrinkling, and much more. How is Black Seed Used? Black seed can be used in many ways. As a dietary supplement we recommend one teaspoon once or twice a day. the correct dosage is dependent on whether you are using it for prevention or treatment of acute problems. (It is useful in the treatment of diabetes mellitus or diabetes caused by an allergy. However it is recommended that the treatment be supervises because Black seed does lower blood sugar levels. Black seed should not be taken by pregnant women if their wombs are sensitive). You don’t’ have to be sick to take Black Seed oil. Nowadays because our food is more and more denaturalized, our bodies are full of free radicals which

produce cancer. The essential fatty acids in black seed bind the free radicals and eliminate them. Since our bodies are not able to synthesize thereby making Black seed an important addition to our diet. Black seed also contains beta carotene, which is known to destroy cell damaging substances which produce cancer. The black seed is also a source of calcium, iron, sodium, and potassium. It strengthens the immune system, has antihistamine activity, anti-tumor principles, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and promotes lactation. (Black Seed Oil/products are available locally at Pine Hill Market, 2286 Genesee Street @ corner of East End near the Cheektowaga border – also home of the best fish/seafood in Buffalo! JAMAL X. WEBB East High graduate Jamal Webb has signed with the University of North Dakota. A six-foot three-point guard, Webb attended Carolina Tech Preparatory School in Charlotte, N.C., after graduating in 2008. During his career at the prep school, Webb averaged over 20 points and 10 assists per game for Head Coach Anthony Anderson. Webb registered numerous accolades in his three seasons for Head Coach Starling Bryant at Buffalo East, including being named the Yale Cup Player of the Year as a Junior and Senior. As a Senior, he was named to the 2008 All-Western New York first team by the Buffalo News, and a second team Class-A All-State by the New York State Sportswriters Association. Webb earned third team All-Western New York accolades as a Junior and honorable mention honors as a Sophomore. University of North Dakota men’s basketball Head Coach, Brian Jones announced the addition of Jamal Webb to the Fight Sioux roster for the 2010-11 season. “Jamal is going to be a great fit for our team,” Jones said. “He has a great personality and is a high-character kid. With him and Aaron (Anderson) coming in, we now have two legitimate point guards on our roster and he is talented enough to where he can play off the ball as well. He is the type of player who can control a game and really make his teammates better.” Webb also received recruiting interest from a handful of mid-major schools, including Creighton. Webb said he chose UND for its basketball program and academics, as he intends to major in electrical engineering. He will have four years of eligibility. Jamal leaves for North Dakota, Sunday August 22, 2010. Jamal’s mom, Janine Webb and grandmother, Ada Hopson-Clemons are so proud of him and his future endeavors. Good luck and God Bless.!

ur hat is tipped off to our young Black geniuses today. A group of high school students at De LaSalle High School in Kansas City, Miss. have taken part in a project that will go into history books. When compared with the amount of energy needed to run a regular car powered by gasoline, the electric car built by the De LaSalle students is equal to 452 miles per gallon! One student, Kevin Duley , had the typical dream of becoming a professional basketball player, but the invention changed his mind. He now wants to be a scientist. The great thing about this story is that is emphasizes the importance of extra-curricular activities in the schools. These students’ futures depend on these programs, especially in the Black community. (EURWeb.com)

DEA Sends Out South Sudan to end Calls for Ebonics use of child soldiers The army in Southern Sudan has Translators pledged to demobilise all child soldiers The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), in an effort to increase the success rate of criminal cases, is considering the possible use of Ebonics experts to bring things into perspective. According to the Associated Press, federal authorities are considering hiring nine people for the DEA’s Atlanta office who are fluent in Ebonics, African American vernacular English, to help them, in essence, understand the language of drug dealers during wiretapped conversations, according to an Aug. 24 posting on the website The Smoking Gun.“They saw a need for this in a couple of their investigations,” DEA special agent Michael Sanders said,

by the end of the year. The Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) has established a child protection unit to fulfil the pledge. The UN children’s agency estimates that the SPLA, thought to have already discharged more than 20,000 children, still includes about 900 in its ranks. South Sudan, which fought a long civil war against the north, is to hold an independence referendum in January. Mom Accused of Killing Sons Remorseful ORANGEBURG, S.C.— The mother accused of suffocating her two young sons and trying to cover it up by staging an accident says she is remorseful and has been speaking with the family minister, her attorney said. “Shaquan Duley ,29, confessed Monday to killing her two young sons, ages 2 years and 18 months. Duley, who is unemployed, told authorities she smothered the boys after a fight with her own mother, who badgered her about her failures as a parent and inability to provide for her family financially. She first told investigators the boys drowned after her car plunged into a river early last Monday morning. “She truly felt, ‘If I don’t have these toddlers, I can be free,’” Williams said.

Early Nation of Islam Documents Found in Detroit DETROIT— More than 1,000 documents, including some dating back to the beginning of the Nation of Islam, were found in the attic of a home in Detroit, the city where the movement started 80 years ago, a lawyer said. Attorney Gregory Reed unveiled some documents, letters and a booklet Thursday at a Detroit mosque, including a rare 1933 signature of Nation of Islam founder W.D. Fard. Reed said the well-preserved documents detail the early structure and teachings of the group founded on the ideals of black nationalism. “Very few have seen the internal workings of how (the Nation of Islam) was put together,” said Reed, whose Keeper of the Word Foundation oversees collections and exhibits that include the works of Malcolm X, Rosa Parks and Nelson Mandela. He said the boxes which also included detailed literature about the early movement’s educational and leadership training were recently discovered by an unidentified man whose family members were Nation of Islam “pioneers.” Reed said he was contacted by the family, which owns the home, because of his work with other collections. Reed said officials with the Chicago-based Nation of Islam are aware of the documents and Reed’s plans to publicly display them at a proposed center in Detroit. He said the family is working with him on plans for the “W.D. Fard Founder’s Center,” which they hope to jointly announce within 60 days.

The Tindley Legacy is Highlighted in “Ancestral Links – Love and Other Revolutionary Mumblings”

L

eave It There, Stand By Me and We’ll Understand It Better, By and By are very standard hymns in the Black church. On any given Sunday morning one could go to a church throughout the country and hear an organist leading the congregation with these songs of praise. The song, I Will Overcome became the Civil Rights anthem, We Shall Overcome. Artists from Elvis Pressley to Oleta Adams have recorded these very popular tunes but who’s not popular is the author of them – Dr. Charles Albert Tindley. The works of Dr. Tindley are sung worldwide, but he is not as widely known as other songwriters like Thomas Dorsey. Dr. Tindley was born a slave in Maryland about 1851; he later went on to become a preacher in Philadelphia, Pa. Besides being an amazing preacher and songwriter, he also sponsored many young Black men through college. Dr. Tindley became known as the “Prince of Preachers” and the “Father of Gospel Music.” One of the preachers he sponsored was Rev. William Horner who went on to become pastor of Lincoln Memorial Methodist Church in 1927 in Buffalo. Rev. Horner was married to Dr. Tindley’s daughter Emma J. Tindley-Horner. Mrs. Horner had been a concert alto who toured with the likes of famed soprano vocalist Marion Anderson. After getting married, Mrs. Horner used her talents to work within the community where the church was located; first on Adams Street and then to the Hamlin Park area on Masten Ave. While the “first lady” of Lincoln Mrs. Horner started the music ministry. She went on to arrange over one hundred songs, mostly the traditional Negro Spirituals. Each song was carefully crafted into four, five and six-part harmonies. Upon her husband’s reassignment some 35 years later, Mrs. Horner’s niece, Mrs. Lauretta Anderson, continued the tradition of her grandfather’s hymns and her aunt’s spirituals throughout the region. She directed the Senior Choir at Lincoln and then formed the Emma J. Horner Chorale. At the age of 80 Mrs. Anderson passed away, leaving a very rich tradition of music at Lincoln. Ancestral Links – Love and Other Revolutionary Mumblings, a production that was written, adapted and directed by poet Nta re Ali Gault, will be performed on Friday, September 10 at 8 p.m. during “Curtain Up,” the annual celebration marking the opening of theater season in Buffalo, at Lincoln Memorial United Methodist Church, 641 Masten Ave. It is a celebration of the legacy of the Tindley family and an honor to those musically descended from that legacy. The production is also a retrospective of the journey of Africans from the sands of the motherland through slavery, civil rights, the wars in modern inner city neighborhoods and concluding in the New Jerusalem. This production utilizes the original arrangements of Emma J. Tindley-Horner and Lauretta Anderson to always connect us to those who bore the weight of oppression. Gault uses the stories his grandmother, Mary Jane Jones-Gault, told to him about her grandparents’ enslavement to tell the tale of the ancestors. This very

entertaiment Ellicott Mall Reunion Update

T

he Ellicott Mall Reunion on September the 11 at the JFK Community Park on Clinton and Hickory from noon to 8 p.m. will open the park to responsible users who want to bring their own grills and tents because we want this last of the summer bash to be one for the record. We decided to let event goers bring there own food. Make sure you bring your folding chairs, because there will be the sweet sound of R&B old school music from the 70’s 80’s 90’s, music that made you feel good about yourself. The entertainment will be provided by the Living the Dream Band, the Soul Surreal Band and the Gerald Family and Friends Band. This will be that music that makes you think you can sing! Remember when it was alright to have a job, especially if you had a lady and she had your children? I’m talking about real men who weren’t afraid to take on responsibility the right way. WOW I remember those days. How many of you all remember playing spades or bid-wis going into the wee hours of the morning, while the fried chicken was being cooked? What about pokeno, or a nice friendly game of Black Jack or Tonk. Those were the good times that didn’t end in a shooting or a stabbing or a robbery. So come on out and lets have some fun, like we use to but you are gonna have to leave the perm kit at the house because there will be no processes kitchen hook ups allowed! There will also be no Ripple, M.D 2020 or Wild Irish Rose sold at the cook out. Also not allowed, Three Card Mollie or Find the Pea Shell Game and since I’m at it the 6-8 Flats and the Miss Outs Not Allowed. So we ain’t got to worry about nobody cutting the craps all night after loosing only $3 ! On a serious note - back to school supplies will be given out to those children who are up on their culture and history. So on September the 11th at the JFK Comunity park on Clinton and Hickory from 12noon to 8pm we hope to reunite old friends and families for a day of love and fun. Volunteers will be given assignments the day of the event. Any question please feel free to call 888-0273.

ELECTION 2010

Thompson Calls on Governor Paterson to Improve Public Safety in Buffalo

NYS Antoine M Thompson is soliciting the aid of Governor David Paterson in incorporating solutions to help curb violence in the City of Buffalo. The recent shootings outside the City Grille restaurant in downtown left four people dead and four others seriously injured. . “ I believe that New York State Parole could help provide public safety by conducting bar sweeps in the bars located in the City of Buffalo,” said Sen. Thompson. “ We also need New York State Troopers to assist in executing the large number of outstanding violent felony warrants we have in the City of Buffalo,” he continued. “Removing violent felons from the streets once a warrant has been issued is something I believe would contribute to public safety for Western New Yorkers.”

Schneiderman Holds Roundtable Discussion In Albany On Gun And Gang Violence ALBANY - In the wake of tragic shootings across the state, Eric Schneiderman convened a roundtable discussion with community advocates and leaders to discuss issues of gun and gang violence in New York State.

“Over the past year, we have been tragically reminded that our communities are still not as safe as they should be, that too many illegal guns are still on our streets, and that far too many of our youth are still caught in a cycle of violence,” said Eric Schneiderman. “As Attorney General, I won’t rest until I have exhausted every power the office has to rid our streets of illegal guns and violence. But that still likely won’t be enough. We will need our communities to come together and curb this cycle of violence from all fronts. That’s why these types of discussions are so important and why I will continue to work with communities across the State to stop the violence.”

Last weekend, he visited the City of Buffalo which just experienced a tragic shooting, killing four. At the invitation of his colleague Senator Antoine Thompson and community leaders, Schneiderman joined Mayor Brown, Sen. Thompson, Clergy and other community members at a joint funeral for two of the victims.

Eric is a national leader in the fight against illegal guns.
As Attorney General, he said he will continue to advocate for smart on crime policies and progressive reform of our criminal justice system on a state and national level Mayor Brown Endorses Schneiderman for Attorney General Continuing the growing statewide momentum following the New York Times endorsement, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown recently announced his support for Eric Schneiderman to be New York’s next Attorney General. Also joining Brown, the first African-American mayor of the state’s second largest city, in endorsing Schneiderman is Erie County Legislature Chair Barbara Miller-Williams. “Eric Schneiderman is a true leader who has always fought for what’s right, not just what’s politically popular,” said Mayor Byron Brown. “I am proud to support him to be our next Attorney General. We need a smart-on-crime Attorney General who will keep our streets safe and keep our communities whole. “I am confident that Eric Schneiderman will never hesitate to fight for justice for our families, while making the criminal justice system fairer and safer for all New Yorkers,” said Legislator Millerl-Williams. “Eric Schneiderman is clearly the right person to be our next Attorney General - and I am proud to support him.” Schneiderman has also been endorsed by t he Amsterdam News and Rev. Al Sharpton, who cited the candidate’s “lifelong commitment to progressive leadership.”

Blasts Black Dem official as “Pathetic Tom”

Independent candidate for the US Senate Vivia Morgan, who filed 23,000 legal signatures to get on the ballot, blasted the “white media” for the press black-out of her campaign, “I am just much on the ballot as Chuck Schumer’s Sockppuppet Kristen Gillibrand but the white controlled media ignores my campaign,” said Morgan, a union activist from Brooklyn. “It’s raw racism”. “I am the only person of color on the state-wide ballot for sure,” said Morgan. “The Republicans and Democrats nominated all white tickets. Where are the black and brown faces?” said Morgan who is running as an independent on a marijuana legalization platform. “The Democrat State Convention looked like a KKK meeting.” Morgan blasted Democrat State Committee Executive Director Charlie King. “Who is this pathetic Tom?” said Morgan. “He should be supporting brother Charles Barron not living on Andrew Cuomo’s plantation.” Morgan continued, “Who is this shuffling stepenfetchit?” Morgan is a veteran of Lenora Fulani’s presidential campaign who later broke with Fulani and the Socialist Worker’s party to become a Democrat and libertarian. Morgan was in the Black Panther party until 2006 and broke with them also.

BlackAgendaReport

You Can’t Stop the Violence in Ghetto Streets Without Stopping the Violence in Iraq, Afghanistan and Elsewhere By Bruce A. Dixon When did Black political leaders forget the connection between the three legs of Dr. King’s political philosophy --- racial justice, economic justice and opposition to militarism, empire and war? What function are black preacher-politicians fulfilling when they tell us the biggest problem in our communities is a supposed “epidemic if violence” for which our broken lives, spirits and families are themselves to blame. Who is refusing to look the devil and his details in the eye, and why? I left Chicago at the end of 2008 for Georgia. But for the last year or more, when I tell people where I’m from the most frequently brought up Chicago factoid is the asinine proposal of a corrupt black preacher-politician to post the National Guard on ghetto street corners in an effort to stem a local epidemic of violence. I won’t mention the politician’s name or provide any links to him, but he’s the same idiot who last year referred to the Chicago Teachers Union as the most dangerous gang in town. It’s a foolish idea on its face, of course. The National Guard isn’t trained to interact much with civilians, except to shoot up their houses and vehicles, to call in air strikes on their neighborhoods, or to break down their doors and drag them off to be tortured in secret prisons, or kill them on the spot, as they do daily in Iraq and Afghanistan. We suspect the preacher-politician knows this, and that even he doesn’t really want Apache helicopter gunships strafing schoolyards and wedding parties on the south side of Chicago. At the time, he just needed to keep his name in the news. Besides, if the task of misleaders is to mislead, spreading bogus notions about an “epidemic of ghetto violence” being at the root of our problem, and blaming victims all fit neatly into his job description. The truth that Dr. King told forty-some years go cannot be re-stated too many times ---- that there is “... a clear, almost facile connection...” between the violence, poverty, joblessness and want on Chicago’s south side and places like it across the nation on the one hand, and the rivers of cash that never stop flowing on the other hand to America’s wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Colombia, Somalia and our global network of more than a thousand military bases on foreign soil. There was a time when America’s black political leadership never let America forget this connection. For more than a generation, the standard stance among America’s black political class was to demand an end to militarism, empire, and war at the same time they championed vastly expanded funding of education, housing, jobs and equal opportunities at home. But for the present-day Black political class, that time isn’t just over – it never happened. Thanks to the kinds of history written by the likes of Dr. Peniel Joseph, it’s outside their memories, beyond their imaginations. With the ascension of a new generation of businesses-oriented Black politicians, the corporate and military embrace of desegregation at the top levels of their own ranks, with the careers of Colin Powell and Clarence Thomas and Condoleeza Rice, and the elevation of the First Black President, the fight against Jim Crow and its remnants has been decisively severed from the quest for economic justice, and from opposition to war, militarism and empire. The First Black President can be hailed as the ultimate fulfillment of “Dr. King’s Dream” at a 2008 Democratic convention underwritten by corporate sponsors, and with the candidate surrounded by two dozen mostly black admirals and generals. Our First Black President became the first president of any party or color to keep the Secretary of War, deceptively called the Secretary of Defense, of the previous party, in this case a bloodstained Reagan-era war criminal. And before he was in office 36 hours, Obama broke another color barrier, becoming the first black president to kill brown civilians and children with remote controlled drones in Afghanistan. “Before there was an epidemic of ghetto violence, there was an epidemic withdrawal of the manufacturing and other jobs which drew our grandparents and great grandparents up from the rural south in the first place. There were epidemics of neighborhood school closings, epidemics of free and low-cost medical care cutbacks, and epidemics of privatization of public resources. “ It’s only by erasing and ignoring the connection between trillion dollar giveways to Wall Street banksters and unlimited funding for imperial war that a sensible person can pin the cause of an “epidemic of violence” in poor communities to some ethical or moral shortcomings of people who live there. in morally deficient ghetto neighborhoods amid exhortations to residents to “clean themselves up” first begin to make a kind of sense. EDITORIALS Enough is Enough! I Had A Nightmare... (Editor’s Note: This has been a whirlwind week for Mr. Jackson. In addition to leading a major protest against the News for their insensitive reporting in the wake of the City Grill Tragedy, he found himself in the spotlight once again when Riccardo M. McCray, a person of interest in the killings, surrendered himself to Jackson , who in turn secured an attorney and turned the young man over to the police. But before the process ended DARNEL unnecessary force JACKSON was used against Jackson by police, but the incident was caught by a television camera and aired on tv. McCray has insisted that he was not the shooter. Jackson noted that he (McCray) feared for his life because photos of him were posted in areas of the community before he was turned in and he feared for his life. Still, bail was set at $500,000. Meanwhile, Jackson and his family found themselves literally under siege last weekend when several police cars converged on his Barthel Avenue street and home to arrest him for allegedly intimidating a man – who is in fact a friend of the family. Jackson said its all a set up and that the police are simply out to get him. Several demonstrations he had planned had to be cancelled because of this latest incident, but he said he wants the public to know that he and his supporters will be outside True Bethel Baptist Church today where the News editor is scheduled to address the community. Jackson made it clear that is not a protest in any way against Rev. Pridgen or his church. He said he will continue to protest until the News meets his organization’s demands, which are outlined in his column here. Jackson is being represented by one of the region’s top defense lawyers, Herbert L. Greenman. He is expected to turn himself in and be released today. We must keep Bro. Jackson in our prayers and thank him for his brave, uncompromising stand against corruption and injustice.) I’d like to thank “God Almighty for allowing me to be to be a soldier in His army.” Second I’d like to thank all of my supporters that has given me the inspiration to keep going when it seems like there’s no way to turn. Our youths need our support and guidance. We as adults have failed our children so we must as parents take back the driver seat and guide our children in the right direction. Is this mad cycle of violence going to stop over night? Maybe or maybe not. No matter, we’ve got to let go and let God. This fight is not ours but it’s God’s. We’ve got to learn not to use God but allow God to use us. And third, I would like to thank our forefathers here in Buffalo, Mr. Arthur

Glenn Beck is a sick man, crazy actually, crazy like a Fox News Network. Maybe if he never existed, it would be necessary for the Devil to invent him. He has carried through his plan to momentarily pre-empt the Civil Rights Movement and rally his Tea Party and conservative followers at no other location than the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC on the 47th Anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. He calls it “Restoring Honor.” Ironically this project makes Beck the whitest of the right-wing talk radio grunts out there. A stark contrast to Rush Limbaugh (an admitted liar and drug addict), Michael Savage (possibly the sole narcissist of the bunch), Laura Ingram (arrogant), Laura Schlesinger (condescending), Sean Hannity (manipulative) and last and emphatically least Ted Nugent. What makes Beck dangerous is he has just enough BS to make himself sound rational to many. He knows he’s on the wrong side of history, isn’t comfortable with that-unlike the other conservative radio hosts-so what does he do? Camouflage the wrong side. Over the course of the last few months he has taken to actually researching and studying Black history and of course twist and pervert it to the current world-view he is pitching; that the Republican Party and it’s affiliations are actually the party of freedom and liberation (as opposed to today’s Democratic Party). Beck started this with his claim that President Obama has a problem with White people. Recently he is claiming he is the heir apparent to Martin Luther King and that former Alaska Governor and Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin is the next Rosa Parks. Beck’s movement is actually not the array of initiatives it has advertised itself as; it’s not for war veterans, nor soldiers serving Chris today, and it really doesn’t bear STEVENSON the earmarks of a white national- Beck (top), and Dr. King. ist movement. He himself claims it’s non-political and has nothing to do with the mid-term elections. This is where he is blatantly incorrect. Surely he must know this, but it seems to be a case where cognizant meets con-man and the results resemble a plot worthy of the WWE. In fact, in order to give this effort some sense of validity is his somehow drafting one of King’s relatives to participate with them; Alveda King, Martin’s niece, was one of Beck’s keynote speakers at the event. What I expected is a cramming words into Dr. King’s mouth-fest that is unequalled on the right. After all, Alveda reportedly joined the fray, claiming to be non-partisan and is even quoted in the Daily Caller as stating, were her uncle alive today, he would attend Beck’s rally. My first thought was how much was she getting paid, or hard hard did he beg her? It’s not hard to understand Beck’s true stance on Civil Rights, all one needs do is mentally transport Beck and the network that refuses to part company with him despite dozens of sponsors deserting them due to his insane rants; the Fox network, back to the past and safely assume what he would be commenting on the Montgomery Bus Boycott (‘King has a problem with White people’), lynchings Continued Page 16

The Buffalo News’s Calculated Assault on the Black Community In late 2007, the executive board of the Millions More Movement went to the offices of the Buffalo News to express our concerns about the paper’s consistently negative coverage of Buffalo’s Black community. News Editor Margaret Sullivan was impressed enough with our comments that she consented to a conversation with our general body at one of our regular Thursday night meetings. At that meeting, our members gave her and her colleague an earful about the impact of negative stories on our children’s morale and self image, and reminded her of the many positive things that happen on the East side that never get coverage in the Buffalo News. She appeared to be responsive to our comments, and left us with a commitment to reexamine the paper’s handling of issues that affect us, and to refrain from a negative bias against us. The decision to print the criminal records of 7 of the 8 City Grill shooting victims was a calculated assault. The editors knew how salacious the article would be, and that’s why they printed it. A lot of thought went into this decision: Is the Black community organized enough and politically powerful enough to consequence The Buffalo News? They calculated that we aren’t. Would the paper offend the sensibilities of Sabirah the wider community enough where others would stand MUHAMMAD with us and share our outrage? Absolutely not. From the rooftops of New Orleans to the rubble of Haiti, the world is convinced that Black life is not valuable. Did they have enough circulation to risk losing whatever revenues come from our community? Evidently. Besides, haven’t we proven our capacity to forgive – even when White folks don’t even ask? Didn’t we nearly bankrupt the Montgomery bus company, and then go right back to it rather than keep walking, saving, and buying our own buses? Would printing the article spark controversy, and increase sales and visibility? Absolutely. With a CNN interview and nationwide internet chatter, the paper hit pay dirt. Are Black folk expendable? Absolutely. Is there any reason our dignity and humanity should be respected? Please. The editors reinforced their intractable, unrepentant, in-your-face insult with another article detailing the criminal records of the current suspect – and his deceased father’s. The message: all of us are incorrigible, the living and the dead, the young and the old, the male and the female, the victims and the perpetrators, from the cradle to the grave. –Because evidently it’s hereditary. But what about those criminal records? OK, let’s respond. As this topic led the discussion at last week’s Millions More Movement meeting, Convener Eric Muhammad addressed Ms. Sullivan’s comment on “telling the kinds of truths that bring about positive change.” He noted that White folks always want to tell the truth on us, but they never want to tell it on themselves. Never do they talk about the siege of Black communities, where resources that we all contribute to are deliberately withheld and hoarded by suburban communities, making our areas hotbeds of crime and hopelessness. –Where young Black men are specifically and relentlessly targeted by police, so that the innocent as well as the guilty end up with some kind of criminal record. Never do they talk about the ways in which they benefit from our unemployment, under education, and calculated, deliberate, malicious disenfranchisement. Millions More Movement co-chair Samuel Radford made another point: that it’s good to see our people energized the way that we are over this issue, but we have to find a way to begin defending the living as well as the dead. We ourselves are not immune to the message that our lives are worthless. We have to see our own lives as sacrosanct at all times. This series has been exploring the persecution of the Quinn family, who have been set upon by powerful forces for ruin. We’ll continue their story next time, with hope that this issue will be the first to receive the kind of outrage on behalf of the living that it truly should. In the meantime, what should our response be to the Buffalo News? What if we were to send more of our advertising dollars, our readership, our writers, our subscriptions, and our passionate support to the Challenger and the Criterion? Just how much could those papers expand if we were to mobilize as a family behind them? We hear that there is a community meeting scheduled with Margaret Sullivan this week. Let those who want to find a reason to continue supporting our obvious adversary meet with Ms. Sullivan. Been there. Done that. Let those of us who understand the dire need to tell our own stories and regain our self respect meet with the leadership of our own Black newspapers. The names of these papers tell everything we need to know about their perspectives. One is making a challenge – throwing down the gauntlet in an obvious, take-no-prisoners propaganda war. The other is establishing the criteria - for how we want and need to see ourselves; and setting the standard for our own truths. These papers have been consistent, waiting for us to wake up enmasse to recognize an idea whose time has come. Holla if you hear me… (948-5100, 578-3571). THE MONTH OF RAMADAN

DARNELL continued O.Eve, Mr. David Collins, Mr. George K. Arthur, and Mr. Clifford Bell who paved the way for us here in the City of Buffalo. It was not easy for then and its not easy now, but if we stand together we can make it happen. A special thanks to The Challenger Newspaper and Alnisa Banks who always believed in me and my stand even when it may have cost her some subscriberS. For some 30 years she has stood for what she believes is right on behalf of this community. So I’m asking from the bottom of my heart that if you believe in me and our movement to save our youths as well as our city please support The Challenger. Support the truth. Last but not least, on behalf of the 50 plus youths working under my leadership this summer, it hasn’t been easy and it couldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the Margaret Wendt Foundation who came to our rescue, saw first hand what we have done in our community and without further question, funded our program with a $100,000 grant. This, after being cut from the city budget, which allowed us to hire our youths. I thank them for their trust. Every penny went to help rebuild, clean our community, hire our youths, stop the violence in our neighborhood and has given us hope back where I believe hope was lost. The last couple of weeks has really taken a toll on the City of Buffalo. We made national news because of a terrible tragedy that happen outside one of Buffalo’s popular night spots. Violence erupted and four people were killed and four people were seriously injured. Is the right person is in custody now? At first due to rush judgment the wrong man was picked up and charged. He had to be let go. Three people were picked up and released all together, then a pick up order was issued for a fourth person which over the last two weeks was being sought by over four police agencies. Due to the unrest and seriousness of the crime the last suspect needed to be brought in and questioned and he turned himself over to me along with Bishop Perry Davis, after talking with his friends and family. I was contacted and convinced this young man to turn himself over to me and took him to Channel 4 News through Rich Newburg to make sure he was safe and from any danger after a brief interview with him. The News, the Buffalo Police as well as US Attorney’s office (William Hochul )and the FBI were all contacted and the young man was taken into custody. I believe it was the right thing to do to make the city calm, take some pressure off the victims families as well as his family, and help the police focus on other crimes that need to be solved. However as many people saw on television, the police were very disrespectful to me. Thank God it was only a jerk that acted like a jerk. My heart goes out to all the families because it was a tragedy to the families on both sides. My organization has put together an agenda to meet with the owner or Margaret Sullivan the editor who allowed that story to be. She has contacted me Continued Page 16

By IMAM FAJRI ANSARI

he month of Ramadan began August 11, 2010. It is the month of fasting observed by 1 billion Muslims around the world. Ramadan is a month that is part of the lunar calendar which begins and end at the sighting of the new moon. All who are at the age of puberty, in good health, not travelling (or in case of women), not pregnant or on their menses are required to fast. Muslims will fast for a period of 29-30 days from sunrise to sunset abstaining from all foods and drinks and marital relations. In addition to abstaining from physical foods, Muslims are to be on their best behavior. Abstaining from negative environments, arguments, bad behaviors, bad deeds etc. which are equally important in that it could cause Muslims to break their fast mentally and spiritually. Ramadan derives from a term which means “burning” or purification. It is a time to burn off your sins and get a complete cleansing. It is said by Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him that “whoever intends to fast the month of Ramadan and completes the fast that all his/hers sins from the previous year will be forgiven”. Qur’an 2:183 “O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was to those before you that you may (learn) self restraint” There are many benefits to fasting the month of Ramadan. The individual(s) who fast are drawn nearer to Allah (G-d) by increasing their sacred regard and reverence for The Creator and Sustainer of everything. There are great health benefits by allowing the digestive system that is usually overworked to thoroughly digest and cleans waste out its system. The discipline of maintaining the fast increases ones patience and tolerance when socially interacting. Your senses are sharpened as well as your consciousness. What is the fast for? Allah (G-d) says fasting is for Me! This serves one’s logic because G-d is the only One who knows whether or not you are keeping your fast. The focus on the fast should be to help those who do not have what others have. There are people who involuntarily fast throughout the year because they do not have food and shelter. Muslims are to be more charitable during the month of Ramadan. Good deeds in AI-Islam are multiplied by 10 times…in Ramadan those good deeds are multiplied by a minimum of 70 times and greater. The late Imam W. Deen Mohammed said regarding the fast of Ramadan,”It is to have us share what we have with those who have little or nothing. It is to go to the aid of the hungering and those who are poor and destitute who need help. It opens our heart to them and we help them. So fasting is for G-d. If the believer keeps his fast that way then he benefits his own life more and he benefits the community more. But if he fast just because he says this is a law I have to fast or if he fast just because he knows when he comes off the fast after the month of Ramadan he feels better health-wise or he just feels good, that is not it…the purpose is too serious.

The seriousness is a healthy community where people register the hurt and suffering of their brothers and sisters so that is what G-d means.” Fasting in Ramadan should not be an emphasis on how long you are fasting each day but more so on how well you are fasting each day. Prophet Muhammad said “Perhaps a fasting person will receive nothing from his fasting except hunger and thirst.” “Every action of the son of Adam is given manifold reward; each good deed receiving ten times it’s like, up to seven hundred times. Allah the Most High said except fasting, for it is for Me and I give recompense for it, he leaves off his desires and his food for me, for the fasting person there are two times of joy; a time when he breaks his fast and a time of joy when he meets his Lord, and the smell coming from the mouth of the fasting person is better with Allah than the smell of musk. “ During the month of Ramadan Muslims also commemorate the time The Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad by the angel Gabriel (Jibril). The entire 114 Chapters would take a little over 23 years to be revealed. Muslims are encouraged to read at least 1/30th of the Qur’an each day in Ramadan in order to complete the entire reading by the end of the month. The purpose of reading the Qur’an is to become closer to Allah’s (G-d’s) words. Muslims read to gain direction and instructions for Guidance, Forgiveness and for Mercy. At the end of the month of Ramadan it is expected the fasting believer is renewed and looks to begin life on a new start. There is a three day celebration called Eid al Fitr which means a “reoccurring happiness” and a return to your original human nature. Muslims have a feast and share gifts with families, friends and neighbors. This year’s celebration is anticipated to around September 9-11. Please look out for our celebration and join in with us! Ramadan Mubarak! Blessed Ramadan to all! ( FAJRI ANSARI is the Imam at MASJID NU’MAN 1373 FILLMORE AVE BFLO, NY 14211)

-53The great Way is easy, Yet people prefer the side paths. Be aware when things are out of balance. Stay centered within the Tao. When rich speculators prosper While farmers lose their land; When government officials spend money On weapons instead of cures; When the upper class is extravagant and irresponsible While the poor have nowhere to turn – All this is robbery and chaos. It s not in keeping with the Tao. Page 15

Abuse is a word many of us despise hearing, however it is a word that identifies the pain of many of our females, not only in their adult years but many years as teenagers. According to the National Children’s Alliance, 20 percent of adult females reported sexual childhood abuse. That is equivalent to one out of five teen young ladies having undergone such devastation and pain which has hindered many of them in their progress in life. Yet sexual abuse is only one form of abuse. There are many more such as mental, emotional, verbal and physi- PASTOR TERRIE ANN cal. This cycle of abuse continues within our individual “TC” Coplin communities and abroad. There is a cry for help in our land to restore dignity and integrity within our young ladies. They must be acknowledged as being more than a body, but young ladies that have a mind and a future. Females are the seed carriers of life and unfortunately many females are not able to nurture as designed, due to violations within their lives by someone who did not know or understand the value of a female. Many of our homes are filled with drugs, illicit sex, abuse, gang activity and more. Let’s examine the root causes which consist of a lack of dignity and understanding of one’s’ true existence. Many of us are aware of the need to restore our young ladies back to their original design; however the restoration process begins with “words.” According to the Bible, “death and life is on the power of the tongue.” Today can be a new day to begin cleansing ones environment with words of life. This life can begin a process of healing back into our mothers, children, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, niece’s cousins. Together we can bring levels of healing and restoration to our young ladies.
