East Side Block to Get Gardening Makeover
A
full block on Buffalo’s East Side is about to get a gardening makeover.
Nineteen front yards along historic North Parade Ave. between Fillmore Ave. and Northampton St. on Buffalo’s East Side are being transformed by professional landscapers who are donating their time and materials to create the most impressive yards. This Front Yard Garden Competition is part of the new National Buffalo Garden Festival and festival organizers believe it is the first such civic-minded garden competition in the country. The competition will give a facelift to a street that borders the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. The homes on North Parade Ave. were built between 1890 and 1920 . “Any improvement to the neighborhood is very good,” said Arfreda Gaines from her beautifully landscaped back yard at 60 North Parade. A resident for over 30 years, she was busy making preparations along the side, and in front of her home for the professional landscapers Former Masten District Councilmember David Collins and his wife agreed. “I’m excited,” said Mrs. Collins. “This effort will have a residual effect.” The Collins’, like their neighbor Mrs. Gaines, have lived at their 56 N. Parade home for well over three decades. Mr. and Mrs. Collins “The Olmstead group has done an excellent job of restoring and maintaining this park,” said Mr. Collins. “All this project can do to this neighborhood is improve the property and the neighborhood…” “Its an upgrade,” added Mrs. Collins. Both residents acknowledged the work Olmstead Project Coordinator Otis Glover’s in organizing the neighborhood in preparation for this major Continued Page 13

This is a lot of damage, and a lot of violence. Some people are cruel, some people are breaking other people’s hearts. Some people have stuff like guns and other weapons. A lot of people are getting killed. This is a lot of chaos. This is a lot of killing, damage, and violence. The sword has a lot of impact.”

WORLD NEWS ROUND-UP
June Job Report: Employers cut 125,000 A wave of census layoffs cut the nation’s payrolls in June for the first time in six months, while private employers added a modest number of jobs. The unemployment rate fell to 9.5 percent, its lowest level in almost a year. The Labor Department says employers cut 125,000 jobs last month, the most since last October. The loss was driven by the end of 225,000 temporary census jobs. Businesses added 83,000 workers to their payrolls, an improvement from May. The unemployment rate fell as more people out of work gave up on their job searches and left the labor force. People who are no longer looking for work aren’t counted as unemployed.
African American historical site excavated in New Jersey
SUBSCRIBE
Near the terminus of a dead-end road, on a bulblike hill in the midst of a grassy meadow, a group of Temple University archaeology students and volunteers is excavating what may be one of the most important African American historical sites in New Jersey. It’s called Timbuctoo - a once-thriving enclave probably founded by free African Americans and escaped slaves in the 1820s, now abandoned, if not forgotten, for more than half a century. An entire village lies beneath the grassy hill near Rancocas Creek in Westampton Township outside Mount Holly - at least 18 houses, remains of a church, two roadways, an alley, a number of privies and wells, possibly schools, and large parts of a cemetery, where 13 graves of African American troops from the Civil War are marked by headstones - but where six times as many may lie in unmarked graves. No African American site of this magnitude has been excavated in the region, and very few have been uncovered nationwide, according to archaeologists. “This is the first time we’re seeing such a site being excavated,” said David Orr, the Temple professor and historical archaeologist overseeing the project. “The unique quality of this is that it’s very large. It has no problems, perfect preservation of its core - that’s also impressive. As an archaeological site, in my experience, I have never seen anything like this - only because nobody has excavated one.”
At least 220 people were killed in the Democratic Republic of Congo when an overturned oil tanker exploded and set fire to parts of a village. The population was said to be in terrible shock. No one was speaking or Crying. There were scores of dead bodies on the streets– at least 61 children and 36 women are feared among the dead Scores more were injured in the accident in Sange, near the border with Burundi. Some of those who died were trying to collect leaking fuel, but others were trapped inside buildings, including a cinema, by the fire. UN peacekeepers joined rescue efforts to help evacuate the injured. Eyewitnesses said the fire engulfed dozens of houses like the one pictured above. “People tried to escape but were caught by the fire and reduced to ashes,” Tondo Sahizira, 28, told AFP news agency.
Report: O.J. Set to Marry Pen Pal Behind Bars Afrofest in Toronto This Weekend! *British paper The Globe is reporting that O.J. Simpson is preparing to tie the knot with a pen pal he has yet to meet in person. The former NFL star, who is serving time in Nevada for armed robbery, has allegedly proposed to “a young blonde” named Anna, who is said to be the spitting image of his late wife Nicole. “They’ve been writing to each other for a while now. She sent him her photo, and he just flipped for her,” a source told the Globe. If the reports are true, Anna would become Simpson’s third wife. He was found not guilty in the murder of his second wife, Nicole, in 1995.
Two Men Arrested In Church After Raping & Impregnating A 10 Year Old Girl! According to the Georgia Bureau of Intelligence (GBI) news release, two brothers, Danny Lee Arnold, 19, and Thomas Marcus Arnold, 21, are in the Fulton County jail charged with child molestation, incest, cruelty to children and sexual battery for crimes against a 10- year-old girl in Union City, Ga. Authorities started an investigation at the request of the Department of Family and Children Services, after it was discovered that the 10-year-old girl was pregnant. Upon the discovery of the child’s pregnancy, authorities in Newton County, where the girl has relatives, were contacted and found that the suspects lived in Union City, where the assault and molestation had allegedly been going on for years. The two suspects were arrested in CHURCH, after a source called in a tip to the GBI. Yes, church. Clearly they had been absent for the “thou shalt not rape little girls” sermon. Thank God someone had the decency to “snitch” on behalf of this little girl and remove these alleged predators from the community. It is unclear at this time what the girl’s relationship to these two men was. It is also unclear what the hell has gone wrong in this world. But just when you thought you couldn’t be any more disgusted than you currently are, the aunt of the two brothers, Lisa Arnold, 28, was also arrested for incest, after the GBI found evidence that she had sex with her two nephews. The victim has since had an abortion. DNA has been tested to determine which of the brothers impregnated the child. Page 4

HEALTH MATTERS
“Orthorexia Nervosa”: Choosing Healthy Foods Now Called a Mental Disorder In its never-ending attempt to fabricate “mental disorders” out of every human activity, the psychiatric industry is now pushing the most ridiculous disease they’ve invented yet: “Healthy eating disorder.” This is no joke: If you focus on eating healthy foods, you’re “mentally diseased” and probably need some sort of chemical treatment involving powerful psychotropic drugs. The Guardian newspaper reports, “Fixation with healthy eating can be sign of serious psychological disorder” and goes on to claim this “disease” is called orthorexia nervosa -- which is basically just Latin for “nervous about correct eating.” But they can’t just called it “nervous healthy eating disorder” because that doesn’t sound like they know what they’re talking about. So they translate it into Latin where it sounds smart (even though it isn’t). That’s where most disease names come from: Doctors just describe the symptoms they see with a name like osteoporosis (which means “bones with holes in them”). Getting back to this fabricated “orthorexia” disease, the Guardian goes on to report: “Orthorexics commonly have rigid rules around eating. Refusing to touch sugar, salt, caffeine, alcohol, wheat, gluten, yeast, soya, corn and dairy foods is just the start of their diet restrictions. Any foods that have come into contact with pesticides, herbicides or contain artificial additives are also out.” http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2009/aug/16/orthorexia-mental-health-eatingdisorder Wait a second. So attempting to avoid chemicals, dairy, soy and sugar now makes you a mental health patient? Yep. According to these experts. If you actually take special care to avoid pesticides, herbicides and genetically modified ingredients like soy and sugar, there’s something wrong with you.

DEE PARIS!
The lovely and talented young lady pictured above is Dee Paris. In last week’s review of Godfather’s Promotions Pre-Father’s Day concert, she was mistakenly identified as “Dee Parks.” Our sincere apologies! A petite vocal powerhouse who could have performed all night to the delight of the crowd (one song was absolutely not enough!), Dee brought the house down. Her rendition of Dreamgirls “I’m Telling You (I’m Not Going)” was explosive. A cross between Tina Turner and Mary J. Blige – her rich, throaty vocals and intense stage presence are the stuff stars are made of!

DR Congo Marks 50 Years of Independence, But Not Everyone is Celebrating... June 30th should mark 50 years of independence for the Democratic Republic of Congo but not everyone is celebrating. The DRC, as it is commonly known, is the richest area on the African continent. But it has almost no populuar control over its wealth, even by African standards. The security and sovereignty that should accompany 50 years of independence does not go well with the reality of today’s Congo, with a fourteen-year resource conflict claiming six million lives and hundreds of thousands of women raped. The so-called “genocide” in Darfur pales in comparison to the situation in Congo but it is plain to see that it is treated as just the opposite. During the same period that the CIA conspired with Belgium and other imperialist forces to murder Congo’s democratically elected Patrice Lumumba (January 1961) the whole of Africa saw a series of coup d’états, assassinations and destabilization measures designed to stem a growing continental movement for a liberated and united continent. This is the historical context that should inform any understanding of what is at stake, that should illuminate the only way forward to the realization of true independence for Congo in particular and Africa in general. Congo’s vast mineral resources, geographical position and ecological potential for providing electrical power to the whole continent and beyond gives it a vital role in the movement for a truly liberated Africa and anti-imperialist world. The late Kwame Nkrumah, first president of Ghana and a prime ideologue to the African liberation movement wrote the book Challenge of The Congo; A Case Study of Foreign Pressure in an Independent State. In this instructive work Nkrumah outlines the foreign political and economic machinations that have made peaceful progress in the Congo impossible. Nkrumah was the African head of state most closely involved in attempts to preserve Congo from the clutches of imperialism between its independence in June of 1960 to January of 1961, and tried to save the life of our beloved Patrice Lumumba. The most valuable feature of Nkrumah’s Challenge of The Congo is its inclusion of diplomatic records, such as correspondences and documents illustrating the circumstances that led up to Lumumba’s assassination and the usurping of the will of the African masses in Congo. This book is a must read for anyone who is genuinely interested in deconstructing and understanding the current state of the DRC. Given the state of Congo today, it is all too fitting a question to ask why is there a Save Darfur Campaign, but no Save Congo Campaign? The amount of noise that one will hear about Zimbabwe, and no noise about the Congo must surely raise questions. There is the good work of organizations like Friends of the Congo and Congo Global Action. One would think such organizations could enjoy the same level of funding and support as does the Save Dafur Movement. However, this is obscenely far from the case – although easily understood when informed by insights like those of Nkrumah and with an intimate understanding of the nature, interests and methods of capitalism. he unemployment rate for Black men in the city of Buffalo is 50%. That’s a staggering number, and it has brought about the intended consequence: the utter destabilization of our families. As expected, our women have naturally stepped in to fill these gaping voids, and to keep our torn households afloat. Many have done so quite well, taking on work, school, and motherhood all at once, as well as foraying into self employment. But as the economy tightens, and those who prey upon us for their sustenance seek to maintain the lifestyles they have grown accustomed to, the calculated plan to attack the segment of the Black community that is at once the most stable and the most vulnerable has become painfully clear. National Fuel, National Grid, & American Water At this moment, nearly 20,000 homes on Buffalo’s East side are without gas, electricity, running water, or all of the above. This is a crisis effecting women primarily, as we head 70% of Sabirah households. Muhammad our Make no mistake about it; the utility companies targeted Black Buffalo in a diabolical plot to rake in as much stimulus money as possible. They petitioned the Public Service Commission to lower the overdue amount for which a service can be terminated from $300 to $75. Then they sent out crews to work around the clock, shutting off utilities throughout the day and night, and lamented at a public meeting that they didn’t have enough manpower to handle the work load. Sources at the Buffalo Housing/ Homeless Outreach Program (BHOP) have confirmed that some utility bills are $4,000, $5,000, and $8,000 in arrears, and that bills are just as high on the South Side, for example, but somehow, these neighborhoods have avoided the dragnet that has ensnared tens of thousands of us. The conspiracy to hold our very lives hostage is a vast one, involving the utility companies, social service agencies, and anyone who stands to benefit from stimulus monies that our community’s impoverished condition has justified. They use our suffering to get the money allocated, then increase our suffering to send us scrambling like rats on a treadmill to this office and that one, refusing to even consider giving assistance from one program until we’ve exhausted benefits from another. Bus Aides In recent weeks, the caretakers who meet our school children early in the mornings to escort them onto buses and safely across the streets narrowly escaped Continued Page 11 MYCHALLENGERNEWS.COM
Remember what President Obama was doing before the April 20 explosion onboard the Deepwater Horizon oil rig and before the June 23 resignation of General Stanley McCrystal? He was busy selling a kinder-gentler United States to the rest of the world. In typical fashion the U.S. turned on itself. British Petroleum (BP) Chairman Tony Hayward and Goldman Sachs’ Peter Sutherland (himself a former BP head) were among those company officials dumping their stocks at least a day or so before the exlposion. This doesn’t include the shortcuts BP took over the course of years that could only lead to the eventuality of one of the worst environmental disasters of all time and still counting. According to the Daily Record “engineers cut corners in the wall design, cementing and drilling mud efforts and the installation of drilling devices known as ‘lockdown sleeves’ and ‘centralizers’ according to congressional investigators... the decision saved BP $7 million to $10 million; the original cost estimate for the well was about$ $96 million.” BP is not new to taking cheap shortcuts and ignoring common-sense safety measures it seems. Back during the summer of ‘06 they had an oil spill in Alaska that was blamed on a lapse in inspections some of you may remember. This followed the ‘05 Texas refinary fire and explosion. Back then I wrote a 2-part op-ed where I noted that retired oil Chris STEVENSON worker Chuck Hamel was reported to have said that workers approached him as far back as 1999 claiming that BP was skimping on a chemical used to prevent corrosion in order to hold down costs. This was one of their ways to cash-in during the drop in oil prices. One of BP’s problems is that even though they don’t drill Saudi oil, they yearn to profit like the big boys. A lot of the attention and blame being focussed on Obama for his reaction to the spill, is to prevent you from taking a look into BP’s shady history. In truth there is little the President can do with a company that has been deceptive and cunning towards it’s consumers much longer than he has been in office. What am I saying? Are White corporate giants too evil and fast moving for Obama to keep up with? No. But this ordeal does take him off guard in that it catches him during a time when he was doing something considered pretty sickening by the right; yet another series of apologies to other countries for past U.S. missdeeds. It is on these occassions that I liken Obama to that scrappy little sports agent in that American Airlines commercial trying to sell some team on his tall basketball or soccer player; ‘Milos only wants to play for Dallas... Milos only wants to play for Rome.’ Just who in this particular case is this tall, carefree, dorky White player who can’t seem to stop looking indifferent, banging his head on the doorway, much less make himself more appealing to other nations? To Obama Milos is the United States and he feels he has to clean up Milos’ image even in the case of immediate wrongs being done to US representatives. Back on 3/13 three people with US government ties were murdered in Mexico City by members of a drugcartel. Just as Hillary pointed out at the beginning of the Obama administration regarding the US role in illegal drug importation and it’s by-product of violent Mexican drug-gangs, once again. This has earned him heated scorn from the right, led by the typical mock-outrage and-mock sighing by Glenn Beck and venomous rage from Michael Savage, and Sean Hannity. These men stop short of nothing in their quest to turn the country against Obama. Beck in fact had to recently apologize for repeatedly mocking Obama’s daughter during some of his broadcasts. However vile, Obama’s low ratings prove they’re gutter tactics at work. You would think Obama planned the explosion itself if you cut off half your brain and take their word for it.

Show Me The (Stimulus) Money! Can anybody tell me where the money is that’s suppose to come to our community to provide job training? I haven’t seen or been able to find where it’s being spent yet. Does anybody have a plan for the stimulus money? I’ve been asking the city and county administration about monies for the inner city and I’m getting the run around. It’s time someone is held accountable. We don’t have another minute to loose. No jobs, no training, under funded community centers, clinic closings, loss of daycare substidies, cultural organizations losing their funding and educational programs being cut. Everybody’s losing or getting their funds cut except political figures, unions and construction companies. Nobody else is making money. Does anybody truly care about our hood? How can they cut summer youth programs? Do we need to put more kids back on the streets? Am I the only one who sees what is going on Darnell or has everybody sold out? Where are our community leaders, JACKSON political leaders, spiritual leaders? Where is the plan to replace jobs, educational and training programs? As for those who propose cutting welfare, I’m with that notion -but you have to replace it with something, except guns, drugs, and jail. Don’t we deserve better? How long are we going to be treated like third class citizens? We’ve put together an excellent plan to start our own businesses, training programs, and projects to put people to work right away. But no ones seems to want to help make it a reality. We will be taking our issues to Washington D.C. to make a statement, and to tell the story of what’s really going on in New York State, especially Buffalo N.Y. Those responsible for our current dilemma will be held accountable. I’ve met with every city, state and county government official that I thought could make a difference. I’ve received some commitments – but no real action. Others have said that can’t hire people or help us put our plan into effect. There is a disturbing side to all of this stagnation and madness. It is a dark side that involves missapproiated monies and high salaries; political favors to friends; sellouts across the board; leaders too scared to speak out because they might not get some kibbles and bits from massa’s table; and religious leaders who prefer the comfort zone to the life and death task of reclaiming our communities. Add to that scary combination are all too many parents who either refuse, or do not know how to parent, as they watch their kids dying and being jailed without saying or doing anything at all. Meanwhile, back at City Hall, how could our mayor – the guy who looks just like us - sit idly by while our city programs, clinics, and cultural programs are being cut. How can he be in bed with the Republican County Executive Chris Collins instead of speaking out? Sadly, instead of telling Collins to try to help poor communities, he allows the County Executive to cut programs while bragging about a surplus of around $40 million to do what ever he thinks is good for the county! But what about the city? Are we not part of the county? Congresswoman Louise Slaughter and County Legislator Betty Jean Grant are really telling the truth about what needs to be done with the surplus instead of trying to look good and make it appear that the money came from them instead of the federal government. Aren’t you tired of people using us a stepping stone only to get their own agenda passed instead of the people’s agenda? Where do we go from here from a $40 million plus surplus in the county reserve and $50 plus million in the city reserve? Why do we have so many problems funding our culturals, clinics, community centers and most importantly the schools. Where are the training programs to help our people to be able to do the jobs in our community? Where is the sensitivity and the compassion for the least of us? The truth should be told…not sold. Just “keeping it real.” (Mr. Jackson can be reached at 716-570-9165
ASSAULT ON BLACK WOMEN AND CHILDREN continued the loss of hundreds of their jobs. At last count, the number fired was just over a hundred. Budget cuts forced the school system to look for individuals to sacrifice. Who are the bus aides? Most of them are struggling Black women, mothers of children. They are the least paid, and the most likely to have children in the school system. Their firing has the least impact on budget savings, but has the largest impact on safety. County Executive Why be diplomatic? We have discovered the enemy, and he is Chris Collins. He hasn’t bothered with decorum when zero basing our cultural organizations, withholding legislature approved funds from the ECC City Campus, refusing to spend $200,000 that the legislature allocated for youth programs, or bragging about a $44 million surplus (stimulus funds) that he has squirreled away, while our community sinks further into debilitating poverty. The most despicable manifestation of the attack on women and children is the assault on the cradle itself; the daycare system. Ironically, the misfortune of some Black women in recent years paved the way for entrepreneurial opportunities for others. The family daycare industry had gained a strong foothold over time, after welfare went farewell, and mothers of small children were forced out into the workplace. Often they were herded into token “makework” jobs that only served to
soothe the resentment of those who felt these women were getting something for nothing. Because of reductions in state aid, over 700 “working poor” families recently lost their daycare subsidies, and Mr. Collins has steadfastly refused to subtract just $3 million from $44 million to stabilize those families. The result is that funds that were intended to “stimulate” job growth sit unused, not producing new employees, and not providing a safety net for those who were already employed. The recent announcement that applications will again be accepted for the subsidy program is not comforting, for it does nothing for these 700 families, who earn enough to place them above the poverty line. Mr. Collins’ tyrannical practices have been noted often. During a recent conversation with Legislator Betty Jean Grant, she confirmed: “Chris Collins does run the legislature. He has introduced a new kind of governance. He doesn’t veto, he just arbitrarily withholds (funds). This is what a dictator does. A duly elected official, working within the checks and balances of a legislative body does not have the right or authority to do what he is doing.” Hardships like the ones we’re experiencing would be understandable if money to relieve suffering were simply not there. How long will we starve while the County Executive keeps a lock on a full refrigerator? Our open enemies know the fragmentation within our family that causes us to suffer silently and individu-
ally, and that’s why they target us. But disaster is looming. Winter will soon be here, and only our united efforts as a family will avert the coming chaos. The Millions More Movement is here. We’re a network of organizations working together for the benefit of us all. Give us a call. (Sabirah Muhammad is a co-chair for the Buffalo Local Action Committee for the Millions More Movement, which can be reached at (716) 948-5100).

The gathering will take place at 15 Barthel Street from noon until. There will be music by Buffalo’s finest DJ Alan Kold. My daughter Danyelle has come back home for the summer after living in Atlanta for the past 15 years. She, along with many others I’m sure . is saddened by the way that Buffalo looks. She told me one day while driving through the East Side “Wow, all my childhood memories are all gone.” She is dedicated and determined to help Danyelle & “Shawty Lo” motivate the youths in this community to see that there is still opportunity to make something out of themselves. Being from the hood isn’t an excuse, being from the hood should be reason enough to want to be better, live better and strive for better. A few weeks ago a few friends of hers, Carlos “Shawty Lo” Walker along with his manager Johnnie”hitt-afta-hitt” Cabbell came to the city and expressed their love for the hood. Our plan is to bring them and many others back at the end of the Summer for a benefit concert to bring back hope to our community. Danyelle will be opening up a recording studio in months to come and will be looking for the next big star and she knows there a plenty in Buffalo they just need a platform to display their talent! Heavenly Father, I ask that each of us will hear Your Voice today for our families according to John 10:16: That we will not be deceived in any area, that You will speak through us to our families, and that we will follow You and set a clear path for our families to follow according to John 16:13-15. Let the words of our mouths and the meditation of our hearts be acceptable in Your sight, for You are our strength and our redeemer according to Psalms 19:14. Let our mouths speak wisdom and the meditation of our hearts be of understanding according to Psalms 19:3. Let our speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that we will know how to answer every man according to Colossians 4:6. Give us the tongue of the learned and lead us to speak a word to him that is weary in season according to Isaiah 50:4. Teach us to exhort one another today, lest any one of us be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin according to Hebrews 3:13. Help us to never criticize, condemn, or complain because these are destructive weapons that kill, steal, and destroy. They are weapons of the enemy according to John 10:10. Help us to abstain from all appearances of evil according to 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22. I live in a small town where people gossip far too much. Whenever anything happens on one side of town, the other side of town seems to know it. For example, my teenage daughter became pregnant. She is not even showing yet. However, when my bridge club met last week, one of the ladies asked me how far along my daughter was and what month was the baby expected. My mouth flew open, but I couldn’t say a word. The look on my face registered my surprise. Actually, our family had not told anyone, so how could that information have spread across town? How should I have responded? My only plan now is to not attend another bridge club meeting until after the baby is born. Isn’t that the wisest thing to do? My other option is to uproot my family and move to a big city. This is difficult-and it seems impossible to make a decision. Signed Don’t know what to do or where to go Dear Don’t Know: Long, long ago it used to be considered a disgrace to have a baby out of wedlock. Times have changed considerably. This is 2010, a time when a teen-age pregnancy is not good but more acceptable. We don’t ask whether it’s in or out of wedlock, we simply just give the expectant mom a baby shower and wish her well. How quickly we can adapt to situations. It happens in big cities as well as small towns. Why not stay with the bridge club? Other members of the club have problems too. And should you move to another community, you will find problems (both large and small) there too. You might run but you can’t hide from situations. Even though gossip seems to be a small town syndrome, it is not confined to small towns. So welcome to the world of new grandparents. You will be so proud when the baby arrives. Simply try what other new grandparents have done: smile, be prepared to babysit on occasion and pray. Jesus said: in Luke 19:27 The things which seem impossible with men are possible with God. GARDEN MAKEOVER continued
initiative. The public can view the landscaping work in progress from July 6 to July 10 and then vote for their favorite yard from July 11 to July 18. Physical ballots will be available outside each home along North Parade Ave. and online voting will take place at www.nationalgardenfestival.com. The Web site will also feature a blog, where the public can track the progress of the gardens and read profiles of the landscapers and homeowners. In addition to the public voting, a team of gardening experts will review the gardens and bestow awards in several technical categories to the landscapers. The Front Yard Garden Competition is being coordinated by the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy, the Western New York State Nursery & Landscape Association, the
New York State Certified Nursery and Landscape Professionals, the Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the National Buffalo Garden Festival organizing committee. After the competition is complete, the North Parade Ave. residents can take free training on how to maintain their new landscaping. “We’re thrilled that the first ever National Buffalo Garden Festival has been the catalyst for another first: the creation of a garden competition that will beautify 19 homes and help to revitalize the area surrounding an Olmsted park,” said Sally Cunningham, project coordinator for the National Buffalo Garden Festival. “Thanks to the partnership between the Olmsted Parks Conservancy and this community’s homeowners and the enthusiasm and generosity of our local landscape professionals, Buffalo is the first city in the country, as far as we know, to attempt this kind of civicminded undertaking.” The National Buffalo Garden Festival began on June 18 and runs through July 25.
