What’s changing, what’s not, in a shutdown…
Annual “Blessed to Bless” Fundraiser Dinner for Haitian Relief Set
S
o much has happened since the earthquake and the cholera crisis in Haiti. The sanitary conditions continue to be atrocious and the unemployment rate is higher than ever. Most products are sold at a black market rate and the crime rate has increased significantly. As a result, many Haitians have disposed of their dreams of having a better future. Lathan Mission Foundation (LMF) is committed to continuing to make a difference; however, the task is great. Over the past twelve years, LMF has been in the center of the Port Au Prince area, supporting growth and development through the church, school, boy’s orphanage and health clinic. On August 6, of this year, a team from Lathan Mission, New Life Fellowship Church and surrounding churches traveled to Haiti on our fourth mission trip to continue bringing hope and support to Haitians.
On October 12, Lathan Mission Foundation President, Roosevelt Mareus will host the 3rd annual “Blessed to Bless” fundraiser dinner. The goal of the fundraiser this year is to complete the building of the new boy’s orphanage and to purchase a generator which will provide power to the orphanage, church and school. The new housing will provide our 11 boys with safer housing and the generator is to provide more consistent electricity. Daily, Haitians live with selective electricity and can go days and weeks without electrical power. Please join us on October 12 at RCSD School #43, 1305 Lyell Avenue at 6:00 p.m. You may also make a donation on our website at www.lathanmision.org. For further information, please call 406-3499.

There are a number of immediate effects as a result of the government shut down Tuesday because of the budget impasse in Congress. Here are some of the issues that are changing, that may not immediately impact our community: *The shutdown will not affect Medicare or Social Security. *Mail will still be delivered. *Air traffic controllers, federal prison guards, and border patrol would remain on the job, but their paychecks would be delayed until the federal government reopens. *Businesses would see delays in raising capital. *National parks will close. *Some veterans’ support centers will close. Also: THIS: Most routine food inspections by the Food and Drug Administration will be suspended. BUT NOT THIS: Meat inspection, done by the Agriculture Department, continues. The FDA will still handle high-risk recalls. ___ THIS: About half the Defense Department’s civilian employees will be furloughed. BUT NOT THIS: The 1.4 million active-duty military personnel stay on duty and under a last-minute bill, they should keep getting paychecks on time. Most Homeland Security agents and border officers, as well as other law enforcement agents and officers, keep working. ___ THIS: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, known as WIC, could shut down. It provides supplemental food, health care referrals and nutrition education for pregnant women, mothers and their children. BUT NOT THIS: School lunches and breakfasts will continue to be served, and food stamps, known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, will still be distributed. ___ THIS: A shutdown that lasts two weeks or more would probably start to slow an already sluggish economy, analysts say. BUT NOT THIS: Little impact on the economy if the shutdown only lasts a few days. ___ THIS: The Federal Housing Administration, which insures about 15 percent of new loans for home purchases, will approve fewer loans for its client base — borrowers with low to moderate income — because of reduced staff. Only 67 of 349 employees will keep working. HUD won’t make additional payments to the nation’s 3,300 public housing authorities, but the agency estimates that most of them have enough money to keep giving people rental assistance until the end of October. BUT NOT THIS: It will be business as usual for borrowers seeking loans guaranteed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which together own or guarantee nearly half of all U.S. mortgages and 90 percent of new ones. ___ THIS: Possible delays in processing new disability applications. BUT NOT THIS: Social Security and Medicare benefits still keep coming.

BILLS UPDATE
Bills Surprise Ravens 23-20 The Buffalo Bills played a very aggressive physical game against the Ravens by rushing 55 times for 203 yards. The Bills running ball inside the tackles worked very well against a veteran defensive line. E.J. Manuel must learn By GEORGE to throw the ball deep, and only to your receiver who can RADNEY catch ball to avoid an incomplete pass -CommentsCorey Graham (Buffalo native): “Teams are going to play us hard, and we must start games better instead of always playing catch up…My interception was on similar play they (Bills) scored a touchdown on earlier and fortunately I was able to make a play on an overthrown pass play to the Bills Robert Woods…It’s always good coming home and playing in front of friends and family.” Arthur Jones (Rochester, NY native): “The Bills came with their A game. We have to be ready and stop making our mistakes.” Ray Rice : “Everybody wants to give us their best shot, and we (Ravens) must be able to withstand it and get off to a faster start.” The Bills on the other hand have a short week with a game in Cleveland on Thursday night. I think Tashard Choice will probably see plenty of action at running back position with injuries to Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller. The NFL should get rid of Thursday night games due to the many injuries and many star players are unable to play in these games. Aaron Williams commented: ”The Bills defensive backs Coach Dionne Henderson worked with me and showed me how to correct my technique by looking at film from last year and getting on the practice field…It’s a lot of hard work and I’m looking to continue to improve.” I see Bills beating Cleveland Browns 27-24 in overtime. The NFL and city of Pittsburgh lost a great man L.C. Greenwood died on Sunday morning at the age of 67. He played from 1969 – 1981 for the Pittsburgh Steelers and was a six-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro. L.C. along with Dwight White, Ernie Holmes, and Joe Greene (all coming from Black colleges) formed one of the best defensive lines of all-time. L.C. should be in the NFL Hall of Fame along with his gold painted shoes that he used to wear.

Mayoral Candidate Sergio Responds to Yet Another Shooting in Buffalo Last Saturday another shooting took place in the City of Buffalo. This time in the 200 block of West Delavan Avenue where 31-yearold Jamari Grimes was gunned down at about 11:30 a.m. Progressive mayoral candidate Sergio Rodriguez issued the following statement. “The mayor has failed to develop a comprehensive plan to reduce gun-related crime and homicides. “He continues to pretend that crime isn’t a problem in Buffalo. Even though less than two weeks ago a young female student was pistolwhipped on the very street he lives on. “When interviewed he responded by saying it is a ‘safe neighborhood.’ I doubt that this college student feels the same way. “What we need is an involved administration that has the sense of urgency needed to deal with the crime epidemic we are currently facing. “I encourage any resident interested in learning how my administration will address crime in the city, to visit my platform on this issue on my website at sergioformayor.com/issues/ crime.” Rodriguez will face Brown in the November 6 general election.

Obama On Obamacare: ‘You Can’t Shut It Down’
P
resident Barack Obama scolded Congressional Republicans in a terse speech from the White House briefing room, just seven hours before the federal government was set to shut down for the first time in 17 years. The last time it did, the stalemate lasted 21 days. "You don't get to extract a ransom for doing your job," Obama said, calling out a Tea Party faction in the House of Representatives that has insisted on using the government-funding debate to make changes to the Affordable Care Act.- or “obamaCare” as it is called. Three and a half years ago President Obama signed his landmark healthcare bill into law., to giave, what his administratin said, high-quaity, affordable healt coverage; achieveing what presidents of both parties dought unsuccessfully for
more than 60 years. "One faction of one party in one house of Congress in one branch of government doesn't get to shut down the entire government just to refight the results of the election," he said. On Tuesday President Obama defiantly declared that “this Republican shutdown” risks hurting the fragile economy and pressed the House GOP to abandon its “ideological crusade” against Obamacare. “This Republican shutdown did not have to happen,” Obama said in the Rose Garden, surrounded by a dozen Americans who stand to benefit from his landmark health care overhaul. “They’ve shut down the government over an ideological crusade to deny affordable health insurance
to millions of Americans,” he charged. “This, more than anything else, seems to be what the Republican Party stands for these days. I know it’s strange that one party would make keeping people uninsured the centerpiece of their agenda, but that apparently is what it is.” Obama pointed to the last partial government shutdown, in 1996, and warned that a closure will hurt the economy. “And we know that the longer this shutdown continues, the worse the effects will be — more families will be hurt, more businesses will be harmed,” he said. “So once again, I urge House Republicans to reopen the government, restart the services Americans depend on and allow the public servants who have been sent home to return to work.”
ATTENTION FORMER COKE OVEN EMPLOYEES
Coke oven emissions from Bethlehem Steel, Donner Hanna and other Western New York coke oven facilities are a potent cause of lung cancer and other cancers. If you or a family member is suffering from or died as a result of a cancer from work on coke oven batteries, you may be able to file a legal claim against the manufacturers of coke ovens and collect significant financial compensation.

Obama directed those listening to www.healthcare. gov if they want to apply for health care exchanges where they can buy insurance, saying it’s time to “get America covered, once and for all. Obama pointed out that the Affordable Care Act will continue to be implemented "no matter what Congress decides to do today." Insurance exchanges, he said, are open on Tuesday. "You can't shut it down," he said. He took no questions from reporters. Obama also noted some of the more practical effects of the shutdown, which he said would have a "very real economic impact on real people, right away": The shutdown will not affect Medicare or Social Security. Mail will still be delivered. Air traffic controllers, federal prison guards, and border patrol would remain on the job, but their paychecks would be delayed until the federal government reopens. NASA will shut down "almost entirely." Mission Control will remain open. Businesses, he said, would see delays in raising capital. National parks will close. Some veterans' support centers will close.

14 Caribbean nations sue European countries for slavery reparations Lawsuits seek reparations from Britain, France, Netherlands for their roles in Atlantic slave trade Fourteen Caribbean nations are suing the governments of the United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands for reparations over what the plaintiffs say is the lingering legacy of the Atlantic slave trade. In a speech Friday at United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Ralph Gonsalves said the European nations must pay for their deeds. “The awful legacy of these crimes against humanity – a legacy which exists today in our Caribbean – ought to be repaired for the developmental benefit of our Caribbean societies and all our peoples,” Gonsalves said. “The European nations must partner in a focused, especial way with us to execute this repairing.” The lawsuits – which are likely to amount to a lengthy battle – are being brought by The Caribbean Community, or Caricom, a regional organization that focuses mostly on issues such as economic integration. They will be brought to the U.N.'s International Court of Justice, based in The Hague in the Netherlands. It is not immediately clear when court proceedings will begin. The countries will focus on Britain for its role in slavery in the English-speaking Caribbean, France for slavery in Haiti and the Netherlands for Suriname, a Caricom member and former Dutch colony on the northeastern edge of South America. They have hired British law firm Leigh Day, which waged a successful fight for compensation for hundreds of Kenyans who were tortured by the British colonial government as they Continued Page 14

Three Sistahs Opens 46th Paul Robeson Theatre Season
Challenger Community News • ChallengerCN.com
The Paul Robeson Theatre at the African American Cultural Center has kicked off an exciting 46th season with a reprise of Three Sistahs, an intimate, elegant musical drama featuring the powerhouse vocals of Mary Craig, Annette Christian and Falisha Young. The season premiere, at 350 Masten Avenue, runs now through Sunday, October 13. Curtain time is 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, 4 p.m. on Sunday. In this spin on Anton Chekov’s classic “Three Sisters,” Olive (Craig), Marsha (Christian) and Irene (Young) are all that remain of the Photo: l. to r. Christian, Craig, Young Washington, DC Bradshaw. They reunite, reveal and reconcile past and present, and share hope for the future against a backdrop of the Vietnam War and third family funeral in three years. Based on a story by Janet Pryce, the play is written by Thomas W. Jones II. Jones, who is also the director, wrote the lyrics in collaboration with composer William Hubbard, whose haunting gospel-R&B-funk-folk score drives Three Sistahs’ poignant story to its stunning finale. The Sunset Limited by Pulitzer Prize-winner Cormac McCarthy, opens November 8 and runs through December 1. Directed by Willie H. Judson, the story begins on a New York City subway platform, as an ex-con from the South saves the life of an intellectual atheist who isn’t looking for salvation. The reformed murderer-turned-savior ventures to offer salvation of another kind, and takes the failed suicide victim back to his Harlem apartment for an articulate and moving debate about truth, fiction and belief. The Paul Robeson Theater presents Branches from the Same Tree by Marge Eliot, directed by Laverne Clay, February 7 through March 2, 2014. The story is about deep, dark family secrets . . . and what happens when that dark past comes to light. The 2013-2014 season closes with Gee’s Bend by Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder (May 2 – 25, 2014), about the turbulent 20th century African American experience. Directed by Thomas W. Jones II, the true story is told from the perspective and passion of a single family in Gee’s Bend, Alabama – a real community now famous for the beautiful quilts produced by the women who live there. Season subscriptions are available now at the Box Office at the African American Cultural Center. She also holds leadership certification as a principal, for central office positions, and as superintendent. Her love for education can be attributed to the strong influence of her parents to seek a better life and the desire to replicate her own experiences for every child. The proudest accomplishment of her career was when parents from all over the city camped out annually for days to enroll their children in the school where she served as principal. Since becoming a teacher my interest was always to endorse dedication to students and parents. Having parents visit the classroom is very important to the growth and maturity of their children. Parent engagement eemphasizes a positive academic growth for students. It also gives support that all students need to perform at the top level. Students from my observation, with parents involved, were very well behaved and ready to listen. Involved parents should be familiar with the Principal, teachers and school staff. This is a way to assist parents and students to communicate with everyone connected to the school system. Teachers must make parents feel welcome into the classroom. Working as a team will allow all students to excel in their achievements. This is the first proposal to develop positive engagement for all connected to the children. Having a proposal or a contract signed by all is a good tool to consider in finalizing your bond together. Since I was a Counselor and Social Worker before teaching, this allows me to work with problems outside of the classroom. On many occasions I could make suggestions to different agencies that were available to assist parents or extended family members if the need was presented. Anything that will help your students with problems is important for the better classroom performance. Students and parents are the two most important aspects dealing with education that teachers can possibly possess. They are the foundation for teaching and learning. You must have both in order to give all students the best education possible. One of the most extraordinary experiences in my lifetime was to become an educator and work with students and parents with commitment and dedication for academic achievement. Students deserve to have parent engagement especially in the high schools in order to keep them from dropping out. (Educator/author Ann A. Brown, is a formerly from Buffalo. Her book, “Parent Engagement Effects Student Drop Out” is available from Amazon.com. It is her second book. Her first was entitled “Techniques & Strategies to Increase Parent Involvement.” )
Are Standardized Tests Culturally Biased? Chicago, IL - Could one reason explain the disparity in test scores? Cultural bias. Did Columbus really discover America? Did Abraham Lincoln really free the slaves? Was Hippocrates the father of medicine? Are there really 7 continents? What was Washington's first name? What color are bananas? Why do we compare middle -income white students in affluent schools with low-income Black students in poverty schools? Why don't we compare the best White students to Black students in high achieving schools or those being homeschooled? Anyone involved in authentic, respectful education of African American children during the last 30 years can testify to the late Asa Hilliard's brilliance. His regard for African-centered ways of examining and communicating about education was like the West African Sankofa: he saw in front and behind simultaneously, deeply pursuing the best interests of African American families and children, and sharing his messages in books, articles and speeches. Asa: Honoring His Life and Work looks at what today's generations need to do to carry forward his mission. Co-Editors Itihari Toure and James Young-esteemed scholar-professors at universities in Atlanta have gathered the views of four other contributors from the fields of social work, social policy, theology and education: Chike Akua, Charlyne Harper Browne, Sarita Davis and Mark Lomax. Their chapters' range and breadthgive readers a unique opportunity to delve into principles and practices by which Hilliard demonstrated scholarship and leadership. Readers will find highly relevant topics, including: standardized testing; valuing a collective stance toward young children; supporting family life when approaching parents; and the fundamental, often overlooked psychology of esteeming African culture and history every single day. Co-editor Toure calls this "The Asafication of educational excellence [which] is a signal that some Africans take seriously our responsibility for intergenerational social transmission, for raising our own children, and for continuing to raise us as a people. We acknowledge the ancient African foundations of deep thought and deep spirituality from which our excellent practices sprang, and from which further development is possible." Scholars of education, social policy and theology will find a wealth of discussion points in this book, as will administrators, teachers, psychologists and social workers dedicated to the challenge of bridging gaps between idealism and reality. There are also those for whom Asa: Honoring His Life and Work might reinforce the idea that when we uplift all children's futures, we make all families' prospects doable. Where is the Love? By Daryl Rasuli African Americans have experienced mass terrorism and fear for hundreds of years in this country. The Holocaust brought fear and hate to the latter part of the twentieth century on a mass scale. Osama Bin Laden brought that fear and distrust to the entire U.S. population in the 21 century. Hundreds of thousands of civilians and soldiers have been killed, wounded or traumatized in wars without end since September 11, 2001. Think about it. We should be talking about loves of all types: personal, community, national and worldly love. Love for our siblings, children, neighbors, citizens, immigrants, coworkers, citizens, parents, enemies, and strangers, should be expressed to drive out the fearful illusions of violence and death that inhibit our minds. How long has it been since we looked at the beauty of clouds moving across a perfect blue sky, watched a robin stretch a worm out of the wet spring ground looked at a bumble bee gather pollen from a golden flower in a garden? Where has the love and wonder gone? We know the body count daily in Afghanistan, the number of children failing reading, the latest scary disease or the latest mass killing by some disturbed individual with a weapon. Perhaps this information is essential on some level, but when was the last time we took time to appreciate our loving side of human existence and beauty? Very little of our time is devoted to love and simple beauty. Where is the love? We love our children and we are hard wired to protect them. But we spend very little time to teach about the love bonds of humans and their relationships with people who are unlike them. The Bible teaches, Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy. It does not boast. It is not proud. It is not rude it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth. I Corinthians 13: 4-6. Dr. Maulana Karenga says, “Love involves appreciation and concern. If you can’t be concerned about someone how can you say you love them?” With all the trials and tribulations people face today on the dark side of life, focusing on men’s is and women’s goodness is essential. We have spent too many years staring into the abyss of human misery. Hate, fear, distrust and lack of compassion have crippled our law making ability. Compromise is a bad word and corporate investment in people and new ideas is like a scared gambler afraid to play his cards because of the fear of losing. “A scared man can’t win.” Let’s move into the future with love instead of fear, with hope instead of dread. The world will change even more rapidly in the coming years. We have a choice no other period in history ever had. A choice to choose our future by just doing the right things. If we continue down this negative path of hate and distrust, only disastrous events can happen to this world. But we can choose a different road just by deciding to do so. For example, ‘Climate Change’ is a critical issue that will affects people all over the world. We can change the theoretical outcome just by doing the right things. As just being human beings with power, belief and a will we can change our supposed destiny, just starting with the person in the mirror. -30-

OPINIONS
School Board President Dr. Barbara Nevergold Responds to Allegations, Defends Her Performance and Calls on Board Member Paladino to Stop the “Destructive and Disruptive Tactics” and Focus on The Children. To: Carl P. Paladino, South District Board Member From: Barbara A. Nevergold, President Board of Education Date: September 25, 2013 Re: Revised supplement to CPP agenda for BOE meeting of September 25, 2013 Mr. Paladino, in your memo referenced above as well as several communications prior to this date, you have made a number of allegations regarding my performance as Board President and have repeatedly threatened to call for my resignation. Many of these allegations are based on your opinion, supposition, hearsay, distorted and/or manipulated facts. You have also circulated these allegations very widely through social media and other means. In addition statements such as: “you obviously abhor Charters”, “sanction the we against them attitude of members of the BOE”, “The CAP submitted to the State was rejected because the sisterhood is indifferent to the lives of the children”, “you have sanctioned the repeated lies of the Superintendent that attendance has improved”, “search criteria for the Superintendent was limited by reactionary and racist BOE members” (and I could go on) are simply untrue and preposterous such that they do not warrant a response. I will respond to the following, however: Re: Small Group Meetings – a legal opinion has been requested from the Board’s Legal Counsel and the Board will abide by the findings of that opinion. Re: Your request to be appointed to the team negotiating the union contracts – such an appointment is not made by the Board President. The Superintendent determines members of the negotiating team. Re: The Superintendent’s evaluation of 2012-2013 – per the Board’s Legal Counsel, a Board member must file a motion and gain Board approval to be given access to the Personnel File of the Superintendent. Also for the record, the Superintendent’s evaluation was approved by the Board in an 8 – 1 vote. Re: The Administrator’s Seminar – August 28-30. This is an annual professional development activity. Copies of the agenda were sent to all Board members, who also had the opportunity to attend any or all sessions. Several Board members did attend. Re: Board member conduct – I have repeatedly reminded Board members of the individual and collective obligation to maintain professional and courteous discourse in the discharge of our deliberations. At the August 21st. meeting, I referenced Board Policy 1311 – School Board Member Code of Conduct and Policy 6110 – Code of Ethics and provided each Board member with copies of these policies. Re: Community/Public Meetings at Lafayette and East High Schools – The Board is obligated to hold such meetings for public comment. Re: Buffalo Schools CTE Programs – these programs not only exist but are successful. I will ask Kathy Heinle to provide program information/statistics to you and also suggest you visit schools that have CTE Programs; talk to students and faculty in these schools. On October 7th at 10:00 am at the WNED building, the CTE Access Committee will hold its first meeting this year and all Board members are invited to attend. Re: The Strategic Plan – this plan was developed during a nearly year-long extensive process that was open and collaborative including parents (members of the DPCC, MEAC, SEPAC and other groups), community based organizations, businesses, foundations, teachers and administrators, higher educational institutions. I have attached a copy of the Duties of the Board President per Education and General Municipal Laws. I have not acted outside the scope of those responsibilities. As President of the Board, I have one vote just like any other member of the Board and therefore cannot make any unilateral decisions, for example, regarding hiring, as you’ve suggested. Finally your references to a “sisterhood”, “friends and family club”, “clueless” individuals are further evidence of personal bias and are unprofessional and personally offensive. As a member of this School Board, I implore you, if you are seriously concerned about the education of our children to stop the destructive and disruptive tactics that are consuming our resources, time and attention from the serious work that has to be done to improve our educational system.

SPEAK OUT by Kat Massey
Carl Paladino has demonstrated “zero” inclination to work with Superintendent Pamela Brown or the School Board in its entirety. His boomerang proposal – seeking her resignation – was defeated for a second time, at the Board meeting on September 25. Here are “A to Z” reasons why he should resign. He is: A–antagonistic; B– bull-headed; C–condescending; D–disrespectful, a distraction; E–egotistical, ethnicity-engrossed; F–facts deficient/fabrication proficient; G–a gadfly; H–hostile; I–an impediment, intimidating and ill-suited (for the job which requires collaboration); J–judgmental; K–a killjoy and L–a liability to the accord of the Board). Furthermore, Paladino is: M–“mad as hell” about many things (probably including the interim superintendent, Amber Dixon’s oust); N–a nitpicker (His forensic examination of budget expenditures will not improve test scores.); –an obstinate obstructionist; P–perpetually pessimistic and persistently painful; Q–a quagmire agent (monopolizes Board meetings); R–rude; S– scornful and T–troublesome. U–unilateral (not a team player); V–a vilifier; W–worrisome; X–an X-factor (He appears to have a hidden agenda.); Y–a yielder of road blocks and Z–a zealous instigator of controversy and conflict end the list. Be watchful! It was revealed that former superintendent, Dr. James Harris, was pushed out of town – due to his unpopular choice for the bonding entity – for the $1 billion Joint Schools (rehabilitation) Project. The real reason for the relentless thrust to remove Dr. Brown may be apparent soon. It’s definitely not due to her lack of achievements. For instance, graduation rates impressively increased by 8 percent under her 1-year leadership. ADVERTISING /News/ Information/Inquiries adver tising@thechallengernews.com or alnisa33@yahoo.com

Please read the summons and complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. After the end of the Civil War, about 400,000 acres of land along the Florida, Georgia and South Carolina coasts was taken from former slave owners and set aside for freed slaves, who would each be granted a 40-acre plot of land to farm and make a living. It was the first attempt HOT TIPS in the U.S. at reparations, and was reversed by President Andrew Johnson after President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865. WHO IS MARY GUINN?continued
achieving school in the district, became a nationally recognized school by Redbook Magazine and Business Week. The school was modeled after the Math and Science school right here in Buffalo, New York and has been replicated in the districts in Arkansas, and in several school districts across the nation. All too often the educational experiences provided to children in urban school districts leave students ill prepared. Bold, innovative and relevant programs are necessary to change urban school systems that fail to guarantee every student, including special education students, a variety of options upon graduation. As an urban educator Dr. Guinn continuously accepts the challenge of empowering others to create a climate of academic excellence for all students.
