National Trayvon Martin Update: Zimmerman Stuns Court, Waives Right to “Stand Your Ground” Hearing

Georgetown V. Syracuse: This also was the last scheduled meeting of Georgetown V. Syracuse in the Carrier dome with members of the Big East. It was in typical fashion that Georgetwon defeated Syracuse once again. Most of us can remember when Georgetown beat Syracuse in the last basketball game ever played in Manley Field House, and legendary Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson, Sr. said,”Manley Field house is now officially closed”! The same could have been said by Georgetown coach John Thompson, Jr., but he chose to talk about his all-american player Kevin Porter who scored 32 points and was the best player on the floor. At halftime they retired Carmelo Anthony’s jersey. It was also SU’s first loss in the dome after winning 38 straight games at home in the Carrier Dome. The dunk was Michael CarterWilliams with Carmelo Anthony looking on from his baseline seat. George Zimmerman’s attorneys stunned court observers Tuesday when they waived their client’s right to a “Stand Your Ground” hearing slated for April that might have led to a dismissal of the charges in the shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin a year ago. However, the defense lawyers didn’t say whether they would waive the immunity hearing outright. They left open the possibility for that hearing to be rolled into Zimmerman’s second degree murder trial. Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch captain in his Florida subdivision, shot and killed the teen, who was visiting a house in the area. The move allows the defense more time to prepare for the trial this summer, but also raises the stakes. Florida’s controversial “Stand

Your Ground” law entitles a person to use deadly force if he believes his life is threatened, and absolves them of an obligation to retreat from a confrontation, even if retreat is possible. In recent weeks, the Zimmerman defense has suffered several legal setbacks. Judge Debra Nelson has ruled in favor of the state that Zimmerman’s bail conditions should not be loosened.

STILL DRY!

With Spring just weeks away, and Juneteenth right around the corner, Samuel A. Herbert and the Coalition to Save MLK Park want answers as to why the long-awaited project is still not complete.

C

all him persistent. Indeed. Were it not for the dogged determination and watchdog actions of Samuel A. Herbert of the Coalition to Save Martin Luther King Park, the outrageous snail’s pace of the completion of the long-delayed $4.5 million Humboldt Basin project, which includes the Martin Luther King Park Splash and Skating Rink, would be just another quiet, disrespectful slap in the face to this community. Despite broken promises, political apathy and a community almost too beat down to fight, Mr. Herbert has kept the focus on this travesty. His motivation? “All that I do I do for the children,” he said. “Our children are just as important as children in North and South Buffalo.” Last summer the community eagerly anticipated the project being finished, the fences taken down and the heavy equipment removed in time for the annual Juneteenth celebration. It did not happen. A July 1st date was set. That was not met either. Then contractors gave an August 10 to 15 date for completion. And during one of the hottest summers on record, not one drop of water flowed in the splash pad. The hope was then turned to the fall. Nothing. Then the winter. Surly there would be ice skating and other winter activities. Nothing. And now just weeks away from the first day of Spring, the splash pad remains dry. Last summer when Herbert was putting the pressure on the contractor, the project engineer, and Mayor Byron Brown - ( who he maintains could and should have put the pressure on them all to get it done) – the contractors excuse had to do with some last minute addition and a fund-

ing issue. The Mayor’s excuse was that it was a “world class attraction” that had to be “done right” and predicted its completion “sometime this year” (2012). Interestingly enough, the owner of Man O’ Trees (the contactor for the project) contributed a total of $17,000 to Brown’s campaign committees in 2009 and 2010, making him one of the mayor’s largest donors according to a report by the Investigative Post. Fast forward to 2013. In January Herbert called a public meeting at the Merriweather Library to try to get some answers and an update on the project. He invited the Mayor, the Public Works Commissioner, Wendel Design, Man O’ Trees the contractor, and several Black elected officials. Only three elected official sent representatives: Ellicott District Couccccncil Member Darius Pridgen, County Executive Mark Poloncarz and the office of Sen. Tim Kennedy. The rest were no-shows. “The community was totally dissed and disrespected” he said. “And its clear that they did not show up because they did not have any answers.” On Tuesday, March 5, 2013, Herbert had the MLK Park Splash Pad Project placed on the Buffalo Common Council agenda (Item 52) to have the Council hold a public meeting of all the stakeholders involved in this water feature. But the Council did not talk about it because, according to Herbert, Masten Council Member Demone Smith killed it by forwarding it to the Public Works Department. “He later said he would call a community meeting himself concerning the project and get back to me this Friday with the particulars,” stated Herbert. “ But he also said he could not commit to

a meeting in March nor could he say for sure if the splash pad would be complete by this Juneteenth! And Juneteenth is right around the corner. “We want the Buffalo Common Council to call a public meeting,” said Herbert. “How much of the tax prayer’s money has been spent on this project so far? As of February 1st of this year, Wendel Duchscherer, the architect design group’s consulting fee was paid $30,961. Man O’Trees, the construction company, as of the same date, was paid by the City of Buffalo, 84.41% of the contract in the amount of $2,687,721.00 , over the course of #17 invoices. “This is an election year and the pressure is on the Mayor to produce a completed project (at the latest) by the weekend of Juneteenth that Saturday before Father’s Day. It better be up and running. At the next public meeting, which Mr. Smith said he would call, we want to see Mayor Brown, the President of the Common Council, the Masten District Council Member, the Public Works Department, Wendel Design Group, Man O’Trees Construction Company, Olmstead Park and the public. We have legitimate questions and this community wants and deserves answers. “Give us what we want and we’ll leave you alone” concluded Herbert. -a.b.

The 2nd Cup: Moving On... After five years of representing a shinning example of Black entrepreneurship in downtown Buffalo in the heart of an emerging district, the 2nd Cup Café is making a transition back to its roots; the original EM Tea Coffee Cup on Oakgrove Avenue. According to owner Kat Tyler, it was purely a business decision. The experience at 36 Broadway she said, was a fantastic opportunity to expand and network and forge new relationships and friends. “This is called growth,” she said of the experience and eventual move. But she was quick to add that if she had a choice, it would be to stay put. “If I had the right kind of support I would gladly stay here,” she acknowledged. Kate had praise for her downtown landlord, who’s support, she said, has been nothing less than phenomenal. “He’s a wonderful person...he ever wanted to see me leave. We were not pushed out. Again, it was a business decision. None-the-less she said she and her family are “looking forward to bigger and better things.” She’s already planning to upgrade her menu at the Oakgrove location, and the eatery will still sponsor the Delaware Park concerts this summer. All total, she’s been in business for 13 years. The transition should be complete within a few weeks. If all goes as planned, when the doors close on Broadway, they will open in the community at the same time. Said Kat; “We’re looking forward to coming back.”

outh Africa has suspended eight police officers after the death of a man they tied to the back of a police van and dragged along the road while bystanders looked on. Video footage showing the treatment of Mido Macia, in Daveyton, east of Johannesburg, has once more focused attention on South Africa’s police force, already dogged by allegations of brutality, corruption and incompetence. He was found dead in prison a few hours later, suffering from head and upper abdomen injuries, including internal bleeding. The injuries could be from the dragging and he could also have been beaten later in police custody. The scandal is the latest to undermine confidence in South Africa’s police force, which has expanded from 120,000 to nearly 200,000 over a decade. Amnesty International’s human rights organisation’s southern Africa director, Noel Kututwa, said the incident

was “the latest in an increasingly disturbing pattern of brutal police conduct in South Africa”. Last year’s Marikana shootings, in which police opened fire on a crowd of striking miners, killing 34 at a platinum mine northwest of Johannesburg, are being investigated by a judicial commission. Macia’s case also evoked memories of the death of Andries Tatane, a mathematics teacher and community activist in 2011, which was also captured on video. Tatane was attacked at a peaceful protest march by 12 policemen who beat him with batons, kicked him and shot rubber bullets into his chest at close range. That is because they have been told by politicians since President Jacob Zuma ascended to power in 2009 that they should “act tough” against alleged lawbreakers. Since then numerous names have graced our front pages in cases of police brutality. Atlegang Aphane, a three-year-old, was shot and killed by a policeman allegedly because he suspected the boy was holding a gun. Olga Kekana was shot and killed by officers who suspected her of driving a stolen car. They gave no warning and they fled the scene. These officers are still in the South African police. They haven’t been arrested. Then there was Marikana, a grotesque show in which the state arrested, and in some instances allegedly tortured, the survivors of the massacre – and charged them with the murder of their own comrades. This culture of acceptance of police brutality is what killed the taxi driver Mido Macia this week. And there appears to be no end insight.

Ma’at E’s Mental Health Message Turn worry into work!

Anxiety and worry can be a natural response to the stress and demands of everyday life. For some of us the worry can become overwhelming and we become stuck or paralyzed so to speak. We may begin to procrastinate, which is essentially worry plus avoidance. To combat what can become a difficult obstacle we must start to turn the worry in to work. Use the anxiety or fear to motivate yourself with activity. Start with small things or what you worry about the least. Working on what is pressing will get the most important thing done, but you may not be ready yet. So work on what worries you the least. That will keep you productive and feeling a sense accomplishment even though you are afraid to address what is most important. The negative emotions can be used for good!

Spring Cleaning - Supporting the Liver with Herbs By Christa Sinadinos, Clinical Herbalist The liver and the gall bladder are the organs correlated with the spring season, which is a traditional time of year to take herbs which cleanse and detoxify the liver. The liver plays an important role in detoxification. It breaks down hormones, waste products, chemicals, toxins, alcohol and drug metabolites, and excretes them in the bile. The liver regulates blood glucose levels (blood sugar levels) in concert with the pancreas. It also metabolizes carbohydrates, fats, and proteins; and stores many fat soluble vitamins and iron. The liver serves as a blood reserve with excess blood volumes and supplies blood when there is diminished blood volume. In summary the liver functions are vast; it detoxifies the blood, enhances immunity, produces bile, regulates the blood sugar, metabolizes all nutrients, stores vitamins, stores blood, and lubricates the stools. It is important to consume foods and herbs to support, cleanse, and maintain healthy liver function. Eating three to eight servings of vegetables on a daily basis helps to nourish the liver; leafy greens such as kale, chard, collards, and beet greens are especially beneficial for the liver. Try adding some fresh dandelion or chicory leaves to a salad; although they taste somewhat bitter, they are very helpful to detoxify the liver. One can incorporate fresh burdock root, also known as “Gobo” into soups, salads, or vegetable juice. Drinking warm water with freshly squeezed lemon juice first thing in the morning flushes the liver and the gall bladder. Herbs such as burdock, chicory, dandelion, and milk thistle all play an important role supporting and cleansing the liver. These herbs can be used on a daily basis. If they are consumed before meals they enhance digestion. The following herbs listed here can be ingested in the form of tea, tinctures, or capsules. However, milk thistle is not water soluble, so pills or tincture forms are the most effective. One can also fill a pepper mill with milk thistle seeds, and grind them fresh onto a salad or soup.

Burdock Root is a liver cleansing agent. It is useful with skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. These conditions often manifest when the liver is overloaded from a diet high in fat and protein. Burdock aids the liver in metabolizing these nutrients and encourages the removal of waste products. This is in part why it is considered a “blood tonic.” Burdock also aids in the removal of uric acid waste products, which makes it useful for those who suffer from joint conditions such as gout, rheumatoid arthritis, and bursitis. Such conditions often result from an excess of acidic waste products. Both burdock root and seed can act as a diuretic, making it useful for people who experience swelling in the hands and feet. Burdock root is safe to use during pregnancy for this purpose, but the seed should be avoided during pregnancy. . Chicory Root is a stomachic and it improves the tone of the stomach. It has gentle

detoxifying properties which cleanse the liver. It also stimulates bile secretion and can act as a mild laxative. Chicory is well known as a substitute for coffee. It helps to reduce the acidifying effects of coffee and also enriches coffee’s color. Avoid consumption with a blocked bile duct. Dandelion has been used for centuries as a liver tonic and a detoxifying agent. The bitter flavor stimulates the secretion of digestive juices. Its cholagogue properties increase the flow of bile, which improves the emulsification and digestion of fats, and also acts as a gentle laxative. Dandelion is a supportive herb for the treatment of hepatitis, jaundice, gallstones, and other liver problems. In addition, the leaves of this herb act as a potassium-sparing diuretic. The leaves encourage the release of excess water, which is helpful in the treatment of edema. Avoid consumption with a blocked bile duct. Next: Milk Thistle

With her fiery red hair and golden voice, Alexis was a favorite of both the judges and audience during Season Five of BET’s Sunday Best. While she came up just short of the crown in the 2012 gospel competition, the 19-yearold singer/songwriter is still a winner. As a testament to her talents and skills, Alexis made it to the Top 20 out of 15,000 who auditioned for the show and then survived the competition to the finale. Alexis kicked-off the L.O.L.: Living Out Loud Promotional Tour at the NBA All-Stars in

The Morehouse College Glee Club

Houston, TX, on February 16. Later that day, Alexis flew to Atlanta, where she performed at the Bronner Brothers International Hair Show at the Georgia World Congress Center. Alexis is enjoying the journey, but she is adamant about the fact that her music is her ministry and that her number one goal is to “win souls for the kingdom.” She also wants to make sure that the message in her music ministry remains clear: “You can be as different and unique as God made you and still love-and be loved by-God, so you can be bold and confident in your uniqueness.”

Smith says she became pregnant with Jordan’s son while he was married to his first wife, Juanita Vanoy. According to RadarOnline.com, the pair will likely wed in South Florida at his Jupiter island mansion. In the meantime, Smith is demanding he pay child support like a good daddy should. Miracles singer Bobby Rogers dead at 73

See you at the EVENTS!

Bobby Rogers, an original member of Motown staple The Miracles, has died, the group’s longtime front man Smokey Robinson announced last Sunday. Rogers was 73. “Another soldier in my life has fallen,” Robinson said in a statement. “Bobby Rogers was my brother and a really good friend. He and I were born on the exact same day in the same hospital in Detroit. I am really going to miss him. I loved him very much.” Robinson, Rogers and the rest of the Miracles were a cornerstone act for writerproducer Berry Gordy’s infant Motown Records, putting songs such as “Shop Around,” “Tracks of My Tears” and “The Tears of a Clown” on the R&B and pop charts throughout the 1960s. After Robinson left the group, the Miracles had a No. 1 hit with “Love Machine” in 1976. When the group disbanded in the late 1970s, Rogers started an interior design business. The Miracles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

CHAMPIONS! The ECC Kats women’s team are all smiles following their big win Sunday. Also pictured, head Coach Natosha Cummings-Price and Assistant Coach Brian Brown. Congratulations! PHOTO PRINCESS PHOTOGAPHY

On To The Nationals!

T

he ECC Kats are the best kept secret in local women’s college basketball! Last weekend the team, led by Sophomore Alexis Gray, defeated Alfred State 58-49 in Sunday’s Region II Tournament championship game at the Flickinger Center. ECC, now 21-5, repeats as the Region III Tournament champion (they also won last year and went to the nationals), and qualifies for the upcoming NJCAA Division II National Tournament at Illinois Central College in Peoria, Ill., March 19-23. The 21 wins for ECC are the most since the 1982-83 Kats went 21-7. It is the first time in ECC history that the women’s team has won back-to-back Region III titles and national tournament bids. Sophomore forward Alexis Gray scored a game-high 18 points and blocked three shots to lead the Erie Community College women’s basketball team to victory Sunday. She was named the most valuable player. ECC used a 7-0 run in the first three minutes of the second half to take a 33-26 lead when sophomore guard Amber Hay scored on a fast break with 17:20 remaining. ECC pushed the lead to 10 points, 41-31, when sophomore guard Cara Weaver sank two free throws with 13:16 left. Freshman guard Bethany Hall added 13 points, highlighted by making 7 of 8 free throws. Sophomore forward Charmaine Weaver added seven rebounds and six steals. Head Coach Natosha Cummings-Price had praise for the Kats for playing “as a team” – particularly in the second half. She also took the opportunity during her conversation with The Challenger to make a public apology for an incident that happened during a previous game against Jamestown Community College on Saturday, which resulted in one the opponent’s players being injured and one of her players being injured as well as being ejected from the tournament . “It took a lot out of our team...,” said coach Cummings-Price, but the girls were able to regroup and come back for Sunday’s championship game in true team spirit, to emerge victorious. “The great thing about all this is that we did this with local girls,” coach Cummings-Price said proudly, adding that the talent and accomplishments of these and other young African American women often goes unnoticed or unrecognized. They deserve a lot more praise and exposure then they receive, she said. The official ECC Women’s Basketball roster includes: Bethany Hall, Cara Weaver, Toree’ Walker, Jazzae Verse, Shyasha Spencer, Charnaye Sanders, Garisha Greer, Destiny Ballard, Kadijah Kidd, Charmaine Weaver, Amber Hay, Alexis Gray, and Crystle Marion. Brian Brown is the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach. Congratulations team!

Former Buffalo Resident Marks 108th Birthday! Hattie Bannister, formerly of Buffalo, celebrated her 108th birthday March 5 in Linden, New Jersey where she lives with her daughter Queen Winslow. Family members from Buffalo traveled to Linden to celebrate with Mrs. Bannister. She has more than 200 living descendants in New York, New Jersey, Illinois and Arkansas and collectively refers to the younger generations as “the grands.” She said she looks forward to seeing them and getting their calls. She is a member of the First Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Newark, where she likes to sing along with the gospel music. ‘Hard work, that’s my secret,” she said. Born in Pinewood, S.C., in 1905, Bannister spent her childhood picking peas and cotton and looking after her five younger siblings. She left school after ninth grade to care for her mother, who had become sick, and was able to nurse her back to health. She also worked on the family farm. She met her husband, James Bannister, when she was 22. James was about 40 and lived on the farm next door with his own six children, the oldest of whom was 21. She’s often asked about what she’s seen in her lifetime and for the past few years she’s had a new favorite response. “(Barack) Obama became president. If you told me when I was coming up in South Carolina-well, I never thought I’d live to see a colored person in that chair,” Mrs. Bannister said. “The world’s changed so much. It’s shocking to me but! Can’t even realize it all.” Happy Birthday Mrs. Bannister!

can remember a time that when a person was seen talking to themselves in public, they were considered CooCoo for Cocoa Puffs. Now we have cell phones and invisible headsets and we “appear” to be talking to ourselves. I remember going to my Grandmother’s house as an adult to visit. Mama was sitting there “picking her turnip and collard greens”. Before I used my key to open the door, I heard Mama talking. She was having a full conversation but I did not hear another voice in response to what Mama was saying. I went ahead and used my key to come into the house. I looked around and didn’t see anyone else, so I said, “Who were you talking to Mama?”. Without even looking up Mama casually said, “I was just talking to the Lord.” I didn’t fully understand the magnitude that little statement carried until now. I am turning into Mama. I don’t have a headset for my telephone so if you see me looking like I’m talking to myself, I’m actually conversing with God. As one of God’s beloved kids, I have a direct connection to the Throne Room. I find myself more and more literally and verbally having conversations with God about all sorts of things. God has literally become my closest friend. I “high five” God. I blow kisses to God and God and I laugh a WHOLE lot.

It seems that God in His infinite wisdom is doing a “new thing” in this second half of my life. Diana Ross had a song called “I’m Coming Out.” This song describes exactly how I feel in the spirit. I am doDOROTHY ing things I never WAGSTAFF have done before. I am sticking under God like glue. This time around with God it’s “very personal.” The rewards and benefits for being under God are unimaginable. Our little finite minds cannot even begin to comprehend the magnitude of the love our God has for us. Are things perfect in my life as a result of being under God? No. Do I have trials and tribulations like everyone else? Yes. How do I deal with the storms of life? I don’t. I run, make haste, pronto right under my Abba, Father and He makes the enemy leave me alone. He is as close as the mention of His name. I ain’t got no problem screaming out to JESUS!!! There is power in that Name. Believe it. Mama and dem use to say, “Just keep livin’ chile. You’ll understand it better by and by.” Well Mama and dem ain’t neva lied. I understand it REALLY good now and the best is yet to come. HALLELUJAH!!!

And although he does not deny that he is interested, we have yet to hear Mr. Tolbert say for sure that he is running. Rodriguez Responds to State of the City Address

The Death of President Hugo Chavez: The People’s Hero

After attending Mayor Brown’s State of the City address, Republican candidate for Mayor, Sergio Rodriguez has issued his response. “The Mayor of Buffalo has failed to address the issues that matter most to residents living in the city. After hearing his address we are left wondering what his plans are to address the issues that are on the minds of most of the Buffalonians I have talked to.” “I was listening for solutions to the major issues facing our city such as poverty, education, unemployment, crime, and the way these issues are driving population loss. But these issues went virtually untouched in the mayor’s speech. “Let’s take poverty. Buffalo is the nation’s third poorest large city. Along with that, is unemployment. The current rate is the highest it’s been since the ‘80’s. You can’t separate poverty and unemployment. Shouldn’t there be a program to address them? “And education: the graduation rate in Buffalo Public Schools is hovering around 50%. Wouldn’t you expect that to be raised in any discussion of the “state of the city?” “Then there’s crime. For the first time in Buffalo’s history we are ranked in top 10 ‘most dangerous city in the nation” by Forbes. There has been a 70% increase in shootings in the past year. So why didn’t the mayor address that? “It seems that when it comes to the key issues that are holding our city and its citizens back, our mayor is complacent. “But what is the mayor doing? Rather than offering creative solutions to our problems,Mayor Brown is creating additional problems. He is dipping into our reserves to cover up serious shortfalls. These fiscally irresponsible and unsustainable policies have been challenged by the City Comptroller. A key example of this is evi-

Venezuelans began seven days of painful and public mourning on Tuesday night March 5 after the announcement that their president, Hugo Chávez, had died aged 58 after a long battle against cancer. The country’s vice-president, Nicolás Maduro – tipped as a likely successor – broke the news on Tuesday night, prompting a wave of grief in the nation’s streets. “We have just received the most tragic and awful information. At 4.25pm, President Hugo Chávez Frias died,” Maduro announced in a televised address, his voice choking. “It’s a moment of deep pain,” he said. Chávez died at a military hospital in Caracas, the capital of the country he has ruled since 1999. As soon as the news was announced, supporters gathered at the city’s main square, Plaza Bolivar, and began chanting: “Chávez vive, la lucha sigue” – “Chávez lives, the battle continues.” dent in the City having to return half a million dollars in HUD funds designated to help Buffalo’s neediest residents due to misappropriation and mismanagement of these crucial resources. The inability to address these issues is unacceptable. “It’s no wonder that 71% of Buffalo’s Business First readers said ‘NO’ to the current administration and do not think Byron Brown deserves another four-year term as Mayor of Buffalo. “Fighting crime, unemployment, reforming our schools, making City Hall work, and creating a culture for business and innovation will be my top priorities, This is our challenge and all my efforts and policies are going to be dedicated to this.”

People wearing the red beret the president was known for sang a popular folk song with the words: “Those who die for life cannot be called dead.” Chávez, the symbol of Latin American socialism, succumbed to a respiratory infection on Tuesday evening, 21 months after he first revealed he had a tumour. He had not been seen in public for three months since emergency surgery in Cuba on 11 December. He will be given a state funeral in Caracas on Friday, likely to be attended by millions of supporters and leftwing leaders from across the globe who have been inspired by Chávez’s doctrine of “Bolivarian 21st-century socialism”, grateful for the subsidised energy he provided or simply impressed by his charisma. His death will also trigger a presidential election, to be held within 30 days, to decide who controls the world’s greatest untapped reserves of oil. His designated successor, Maduro, is likely to face Henrique Capriles, the losing opposition candidate in the presidential election held a few months ago in October 2012. He was an inspiration for the resurgent Latin American left and the most outspoken – and often humorous – critic of the US, the war in Iraq and George Bush, whom he described as a “donkey” and a “devil.” Formerly one of the most dynamic political leaders in the world with a globe-trotting schedule and a weekly, unscripted TV broadcast – often hours long – Chávez shocked his countrymen in June 2011 when he revealed that Cuban surgeons had removed a baseball-sized tumour from his pelvic region.

11 Our Constitutional Rights... Dear Editor;

During the past few weeks we have heard a lot about our constitutional rights. The NRA, Tea Party members, the right wing of the Republican Party and conservative radio talk show hosts have all talked about our 2nd amendment rights to bear arms and that the new gun control laws recently approved by the New York State Legislature violates their constitutional rights. What I find interesting, is that these same groups do not support the entire United States Constitution. Instead, they only support the parts that they agree with. I wonder why they don’t support the 14th Amendment that guarantees equal protection under the law and the 15th Amendment that ensures all citizens the right to vote regardless of their race or color. Why didn’t they speak out against the states that wanted to change laws that would have restricted some citizen’s right to vote? The Constitution of the United States is to protect the rights of all citizens of our nation. As citizens, we should fight for the rights of all people and not be supportive of just specific parts of the constitution. -Warren K. Galloway

After that, he underwent several rounds of chemotherapy and two more operations in what he described as a “battle for health and for life”. Fears about his health escalated after he rushed to Cuba for hyperbaric oxygen treatment on 27 November. Less than a fortnight later, he made a televised address in which he said that doctors had discovered malignant cells that required surgery and urged Venezuelans to vote for Maduro if he was incapacitated. Hopes for a recovery dimmed on Monday, when minister of communications, Ernesto Villegas, said the president’s condition had declined due to a “new and serious respiratory infection.” ADVERTISING /News/ Information/Inquiries adver tising@thechallengernews.com or alnisa33@yahoo.com
