“Historically, slavery was the worst thing to ever happen to a people and most of slavery was mental, rather than physical. One of the biggest side effects of slavery is the fact that it made us afraid to take responsibility for our own destiny. many brothers and sisters today still do not want the responsibility that comes with nationalism and true revolution”
-Dr. Umar Johnson

Prisoners Are People Too Celebrates 8th Anniversary and Homecoming of George BaBa Eng! by Karima Amin June is a big month for celebrations…graduations, weddings, Fathers Day, Juneteenth and more. In June, Prisoners Are People Too will celebrate two milestones. First, we will celebrate the organization’s 8th anniversary. For 8 years, we have provided critical information about issues defined by criminal injustice. Prison issues, that affect all of us, whether we realize it or not, have been the subject of several programs that have enlightened and inspired our community work.
“Something There is That Doesn’t Not Love a Wall...”:
It’s not exactly a wall, but a barrier just the same. We’ve received a number of calls and complaints about the parking space next door to the legendary GIGI’s Restaurant on E. Ferry and Jefferson where customers could once park right next to the establishment. A relatively “new neighbor,” Avenue Pizza, has constructed a chained barrier around the lot and patrons are no longer allowed to use it. The quote “Something there is that doesn’t love a wall’ is from famous poet Robert Frost’s poem “Mending Walls.” In that poem he challenges the claim that “Good fences make good neighbors.” Hopefully Avenue Pizza will consider truly being a “good neighbor” and allow folks to at least park in the part of the lot – which to date remains empty except for a few cars most of the time - closest to Gigi’s.
Buffalo, Rochester Graduation Rates at the Bottom:Buffalo School Superintendent Sets Strategies to Reverse the Trend The New York State Education Department released the
graduation rates for the class of 2012 this week. While the graduation rate across the state has remained steady at 74 percent, the graduation rates in the Big Five districts have decreased with Buffalo having the largest decrease of seven percentage points. In a statement released by the state education department, New York State Education Commissioner John King and New York State Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch “express concern about the low percentage of students graduating college and career ready, particularly students of color, English Language Learners, and students with disabilities.”
The Rochester School District did the poorest with only 43 percent of students graduating within four years. Buffalo was next with only a 47 percent graduating rate, down from 54 percent in 2011.
Although these rates reflect a period before Buffalo Schools Superintendent Pamela C. Brown came here, she said in a statement that she has instituted a number of strategies designed to bring city graduation rates up to 80 percent over the next several years (by 2018). The strategies include, in addition to more professional development for staff and early intervention, more after school and summer school programs to help struggling students. “The gulf in graduation rates between wealthy and needy school districts in New York is a gaping wound and current state policies are failing to address the problem,” said Billy Easton, Executive Director of the Alliance for Quality Education. “The gap in graduation and college readiness rates matches a dramatic gap in school spending where students in the wealthiest districts have much richer educational opportunities. In recent years, the state has turned its back on closing the educational opportunity gap, for five years in a row the budgets passed by the Governor and the legislature have resulted in more and more classroom cuts.”
If you’re wondering about the title of this article, wonder no more. On June 24, when we celebrate our 8th anniversary, we will also celebrate the homecoming of George BaBa Eng, following 36 years of imprisonment. BaBa, who is PRP2’s Program Director, will be our honored guest speaker. BaBa says: “I believe in the ethic of working, always towards the greatest good, for our people, to Karima Amin and Baba Eng repair, rebuild and restore our community. I know that God will open doors and allow us to get what we need to get the work done. I look forward to sharing my mind, my spirit and my labor with you. May God continue to bless and secure the people of Buffalo in all that is right and good. Thank you so much for all your thoughts, prayers, and work in my behalf.” This past year, we were honored to have Mr. Arthur O. Eve as a guest speaker. He was the former Deputy Speaker of the NYS Assembly who served as an observer and negotiator in the wake of the 1971 Attica Prison Rebellion. Mr. Eve inspired a full house at our meeting last August, when we took time to remember, as we do every year, “Attica is all of us!” The challenges of reentry, domestic violence, aging in prison, veterans as prisoners, children of incarcerated parents, voting rights, and stigma, are just a few of the subjects that have been highlighted. We are exceedingly grateful to the wonderful speakers who have volunteered their time to inform and inspire. We have had a good year with two successful conferences: Family Empowerment Day (October 2012) and Supporting Children of Incarcerated Parents (March 2013). Also, we were participants on several major panels hosted by the Social Justice Committee of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, the NYS Drug Policy Alliance, and the McMillan Empowerment Enterprise at Buffalo State College’s Burchfield Penny Art Center. In addition, we are growing. We now have two chapters in Erie and Niagara counties. Claudia Racine is the Niagara County facilitator.
Buffalo Board of Education Passes Anti- Beer Ads on NFTA Subway Train 9-0
At its June 12th regular board meeting, all nine school board members voted to request the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority to discontinue the Coors Beer advertisement on its railcars immediately or as soon as they are legally able to do so. According to Kim Minkel, Executive Director, NFTA, the contract between Lamar Advertisement and NFTA expires on December 31, 2013. In their Resolution, the board members stated: Whereas: the promotion of alcohol among our nation’s youth has been proven to be a leading risk factor in causing death, injury, and illnesses as a result of drunk driving, youth suicide, criminal activity, and youth alcoholBetty Jean ism; and Whereas: the District Student Code of Conduct identifies alcohol as an GRANT illegal substance for our school population and expressly prohibits its use by students; Be It Resolved that the NFTA immediately suspend its alcoholic advertising campaign on all transportation vehicles, by rail or roadway and all venues, such as bus or rail stops including buildings operated by the NFTA and terminate it advertising contracts with promoters of alcoholic consumption. Be It Further Resolved that whether such contracts are terminated or not, the NFTA is requested to immediately remove the alcoholic promotional images and texts from all of its property accessed by the underage youth of our school district. I wish to thank the Buffalo Board of Education President, Ruth Kapsiak and all board members for unanimously approving the resolution. I would also like to thank Councilmember Darius Pridgen for sending a strongly worded letter to the NFTA expressing his disappointment in their choice of advertising on their train and buses. This legislator is in the process of gathering signatures from residents, students and transit riders, protesting this type of negative advertisement on our subway trains and buses. In addition to the exposure of our youth to this unhealthy product, Buffalo has over 30 anti substance abuse and veterans groups, located on Main Street where the train travels, whose clients may be predisposed to alcohol and are fighting every day to achieve sobriety and remain alcohol free. They should not be subjected to products that are detrimental to their health and well being as they ride the train or buses to and from their appointment. To sign a petition or to help in this initiative, please call Legislator Betty Jean Grant @ (716) 602-5877.

4 National/International NEWS Marcus Books, Oldest Protesters Gather at White House Black Bookstore In The to Demand Obama End the so-Called on drugs,” and address “Crisis” Country, On The Brink ‘War Facing Nation’s Black Communities Of Closure JUNE 19, 2013
The oldest African American-owned bookstore in the country is on the brink of closing its doors.
Founded in San Francisco’s Fillmore District in 1960 by Raye and Julian Richardson, Marcus Books has been a hub of the city’s black culture for over half a century. The store has hosted readings bBut now, after falling victim to a predatory loan at the height of the housing bubble and losing ownership of the property in a bankruptcy, the family that has operated the bookstore for generations has been ordered to vacate the premises by Tuesday. Marcus Books has teamed up with local nonprofit Westside Community Services in an effort to save the business. Together, they’ve offered the new landlords a deal to repurchase the property that would leave the landlords with a small profit and allow the store to continue operation. “We’ve made a very good offer, in excess of the purchase price,” Westside CEO Dr. Mary Ann Jones, said in a statement. “We hope that the...[new landlords] will accept it and that they understand what an incommensurable loss it would be if Marcus Books was forced out.” However, the price the new owners are willing to sell the building for is approximately double what Westside is offering. An eviction order was issued in April. “I wish I could come up with the money to buy it myself,” said San Francisco Supervisor London Breed, who grew up in the neighborhood and told the San Francisco Examiner about about all the time she spent in Marcus Book when she was younger. “But unfortunately, it’s a capitalist society, and it doesn’t work like that.”
“There is a state of emergency in Black America and President Obama has hardly issued a whisper about it.” – Ron Daniels
Amidst growing disaffection in some quarters of Black America with President Obama’s failure to directly address a myriad of crises afflicting distressed Black communities, contingents of “Drum Majors for Justice” held a Day of Direct Action, Monday, June 17th in Washington, D.C., to mark the 42nd Anniversary of the “War on Drugs.” Mobilized by the Institute of the Black World 21st Century (IBW), drug and criminal justice policy reform advocates, faith leaders, heads of community-based organizations and formerly incarcerated leaders called on President Obama to end the War on Drugs as a “pipeline” to the mass incarceration of Black people. Leaders will also demand massive, direct investment of jobs and economic development projects

in urban inner-city neighborhoods plagued by joblessness, drugs, gun violence and fratricide. Declaring the crises in distressed Black communities a “State of Emergency,” Dr. Ron Daniels, President of IBW stated: “there is a direct connection between the so called War on Drugs as a racially biased strategy and the devastation, death and destruction in America’s ‘dark ghettos.’ The recent ALCU Study of marijuana arrests clearly confirms what we have known for some time, ‘the War on drugs is a war on us,’ a war that has severely damaged Black communities across the country. We need President Obama to go beyond lecturing us about ‘personal responsibility’ and declare the State of Emergency in America’s dark ghettos a moral and political crisis which requires immediate action!” The group of social justice activists, including Rev. Jesse Jackson, said that the socalled “war on drugs,” has unfairly targeted black communities across the country and has become a “pipeline” for mass incarceration in Black communities. Black people are 3.4 percent more likely than white people to be arrested for marijuana possession, despite comparable usage rates, according to an American Civil Liberties Union study published earlier this month. “State and local governments have aggressively enforced marijuana laws selectively
against black people and communities, needlessly ensnaring hundreds of thousands of people in the criminal justice system at tremendous human and financial cost,” said Ezekiel Edwards, director of the Criminal Law Reform Project at the ACLU and one of the primary authors of the study, in a release. “The aggressive policing of marijuana is timeconsuming, costly, racially biased, and doesn’t work.” The Institute of the Black World wants President Obama to issue an executive order to end the war on drugs, as well as publicly support decriminalization of the possession of small amounts of marijuana. Trayvon Martin Update Zimmerman Jury Selection Almost Complete
The first phase of jury selection in the trial of George Zimmerman concluded Tuesday with 40 prospective jurors cleared for further questioning in the high-profile seconddegree murder trial. Among the 40 jurors who have made it this far, 24 are women and 16 are men. Twenty-seven are white, seven are AfricanAmerican, three are mixed race and three are Hispanic. The pool skews toward middle-aged candidates. Zimmerman, 29, stands charged in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman shot and killed Martin as the teen was walking back to the home of his father’s fiancee from a Sanford, Fla., convenience store on Feb. 26, Defense attorneys argue that Zimmerman, then 28, while serving as a neighborhood watch volunteer, was attacked by Martin, and acted in selfdefense when he shot the teen. Prosecutors have deemed Martin’s death an instance of second-degree murder. All 40 of the prospective jurors have admitted to some knowledge of the case. Ultimately, attorneys for both sides want to ensure that each member of the jury panelcan be fair and impartial.

HEALTH MATTERS
5 Real Cheese Versus Fake Cheese: Why One is Good For You and the Other One Bad... There is a difference between natural cheese and processed “cheese foods.” Natural cheese is a simple fermented dairy product, made with nothing more than a few basic ingredients — milk, starter culture, salt and an enzyme called rennet. Salt is a crucial ingredient for flavor, ripening and preservation. You can tell a natural cheese by its label, which will state the name of the cheese variety, such as “cheddar cheese,” “blue cheese,” or “brie.” Real cheese requires refrigeration. The starter culture and cheese making methods are what give each variety of cheese its particular taste, texture, shape and nutritional profile. Real Cheese can be an excellent source of nutrition, a food you may want to include more of in your diet rather than less.Cheese, especially that made from the milk of grass-pastured animals, is an excellent source of several important nutrients. One of the most valuable nutrients in cheese is vitamin K2, which the latest scientific studies indicate is even more important to your heart, brain and bones than previously thought. if you’re going to select cheese with your primary goal being a good source of vitamin K2, the best ones are: Gouda, Brie, Edam. Other cheeses with lesser, but significant, levels of K2: Cheddar, Colby, hard goat cheese, Swiss, and Gruyere.12 Cheese also provides a cornucopia of vitamins, minerals (including calcium), protein, and fat. Even if you’re lactose intolerant, there are many cheeses you will likely tolerate just fine. Most of the lactose is removed during the cheesemaking process. Pairing cheese with other foods enhances your absorption of important nutrients. Cheese holds a wealth of good nutrition, including: *High-quality protein and amino acids *High-quality saturated fats and omega-3 fats
*Vitamins and minerals calcium, zinc, phosphorous, vitamins A, D, B2 (riboflavin) and B12 *Vitamin K2 CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), a powerful cancer-fighter and metabolism booster -“Just Say No” Processed cheese or “cheese food” is a different story. These products are typically pasteurized and otherwise adulterated with a variety of additives that detract from their nutritional value. The label will always
include the words “pasteurized process,” which should be your clue to walk on by. Velveeta3 is one example, with additives like sodium phosphate, sodium citronate and various coloring agents. Another clue is that most don’t require refrigeration. So, be it Velveeta, Cheese Whiz, squeeze cheese, spray cheese, or some other imposter — these are NOT real cheeses and should be banished from your shopping cart.

Ron Brantley, the owner of Blush Night Club and Lounge, has launched the following on-line petition drive to urge the State Liquor Authority to lift the liquor license suspension of the popuar club. The petition speaks for itself: Blush Nightclub & Lounge is a bar/restaurant located at Delaware and W. Delevan Ave in the Gates Circle area of Buffalo, N.Y. In the past three years Blush has hosted numerous events that range from parties, fund raisers, black tie events, live entertainment and concerts. Blush has produced some of Buffalo’s most successful concerts of the last few years including; R&B singers Tank & Avant, superstars Kem & Chrisette Michelle, Ledisi & Eric Benet all at Kleinhans Music Hall and Miguel Ft. It is tragic that the issues that the SLA and the neighborhood have with Blush couldn’t be worked out before the suspension was handed down. The young professionals that frequent blush seem to enjoy the variety that’s provided. From karaoke to hiphop, live music to comedy, the options available at Blush filled a void in this city. It is not easy doing business in Buffalo, we should be working together to come up with a solution where all parties involved could happily coexist. the museum. He wondered why so many people were staring at him. His wife and children had to tell him he was the only Black man in the building! I am appealing to every father to take his children this summer to the library, museum, and the zoo. I am appealing to every mother if he won't, you will.

What Black Parents Must Do This Summer By: Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu There is a 3 year gap between Black and White students. Many people love to believe it's due to income, fatherlessness, educational attainment of the parent and lack of parental involvement. I believe a major reason for the gap is we continue to close schools for the summer as if we are an agrarian economy. Very few Black youth will be farming this summer. If you multiply 3 months by 12 years you will see the 3 year gap. There is nothing wrong with Black youth if their schools remained open during the summer and/or their parents kept them academically engaged. Middle-income parents who value education enroll their children in some type of academic experience during the summer. They also visit libraries, museums, zoos and colleges. Other parents allow their children to sleep longer, play more video games, watch more television and play basketball until they can't see the hoop. These students will have to review the same work they had mastered in May in September. Black parents cannot allow their child to lose 3 months every year. Black parents cannot say they cannot afford the library. It's free! Most museums have discounted days. A male friend of mine shared his experience with me when he took his family to
We need every parent to make sure their child reads at least one book per week and to write a book report. I am reminded of the formula Sonya Carson used to develop Ben Carson to become the best pediatric neurosurgeon. This low-income single parent, with a third grade education, had enough sense to tell her sons to turn off the television, read a book and write a report that her sister would grade! I have a theory that I can go into your house and within 5 minutes tell you the type of student who lives there and predict their future. I believe that engineers, doctors, lawyers, accountants etc. need different items in their house than ballplayers, rappers, and criminals. I am very concerned when I visit a house that has more cd's and downloads than books. My company African American Images has designed a special collection of books for boys. Research shows one of the major reasons boys dislike reading is because of the content. The set is titled Best Books for Boys. We also have one for girls, parents and teachers.

Enjoy your summer. Let's close the gap. I look forward to your child's teacher asking your child what did you do for the summer? And your child answering we went to the library, museum, zoo, colleges and other great educational places. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and nonprofit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Banking Department at 1-877-226-5697 or visit the Department’s website at www.dfs.ny.gov. FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services.
