2 INSIDE ROCHESTER Rochester to Host Dr. Frances Cress Welsing Dr. Frances Cress Welsing will be the 2014 Black Heritage Month guest keynote speaker on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 5 p.m. at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, 141 Adams St. in Rochester. Frances Cress Welsing is a psychiatrist practicing in Washington, D.C.. She is noted for “Cress Theory of Color Confrontation,” which explores the practice of White supremacy. She is the author of The Isis Papers; The Keys to the Colors (1991). Dr. Welsing states that a system is practiced by the global white minority, on both conscious and unconscious levels, to ensure their genetic survival by any means necessary. According to Welsing, this system attacks people of color, particularly people of African descent, in the nine major areas of people’s activity: economics, education, entertainment, labor, law, politics, religion, sex and war. Welsing believes that it is imperative that people of color, especially people of African descent, understand how the system of white supremacy works in order to, according to her, dismantle it and bring true justice to planet Earth. In The Isis Papers she postulates the melanin theory, a hypothesis that has been called racist, pseudoscientific and black supremacist,[2] that white people are the genetically defective descendants of albino mutants. She posits that because of this “defective” mutation, they may have been forcibly expelled from Africa, among other possibilities.[citation needed] Welsing proposes that, because it is so easy for pure whiteness to be genetically lost during interracial breeding, light-skinned peoples developed an aggressive colonial urge and their societies dominated others militarily in order to preserve this light-skinned purity. Welsing ascribes certain inherent and behavioral differences between black and white people to a “melanin deficiency” in white people. Welsing proposes what she calls a “functional definition of racism.”

The beat down handed out by the Seahawks over the Broncos 43-8 showed everyone just how good a football team Seattle is and that Denver was overrated. The Seahawks are too big, too fast, and too strong for most NFL teams. The San Francisco 49er's are the only team in the league that can match up with them. Said Seattle's Richard Sherman: "We won the Super Bowl with mostly 3rd,4th,5th, and 6th round players along with undrafted free agents. Our defense set the tone with Kam Chancellor putting hard a hit on Thomas going over the middle. Our offense today was at 100 percent for the first time all season because with Percy Harvin being able to play By GEORGE RADNEY it gave us so many more options.” Richard continued: "This is a dream come true and I will cherish this moment the rest of my life." The Seattle Seahawks are a dominating football team which will be in the mix for at least the next 3-4 years down the road for another Super Bowl title. I expected the Seahawks to win, but the dominating butt kicking handed out on the Bronco's was a surprise to me. The Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson (Yes same Russell Wilson that Bills G.M. Buddy Nix said was too short to play the position, that's enough to tell you Old Buddy was a sorry G.M for the Bills and did not do us any favors) became the second Black QB to lead his team to a Super Bowl victory! The Super Bowl did not seem to matter to most New Yorkers and you could not tell that the big game was in town. I will have full wrap up coverage in next week's edition.

The newly appointed University District Councilmember is no stranger to City Hall, or Council Chambers for that matter. At the Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday, January 28, Rasheed N.C. Wyatt, former Chief of Staff and Legislative Assistant to the Buffalo Common Council, was appointed following a 7-1 vote. Offering up his name for nomination, Niagara District Councilmember, David A. Rivera, said of Wyatt, “I’ve had the good fortune of working with him now over a period of years. I’ve seen his temperament, his demeanor, his ability to work with the Council, his knowledge and understanding of government and his passion in community involvement. With all those factors, I’d like to enter his name as University District Councilmember.” Councilmember Wyatt has an extensive background in administration, banking and finance and he hopes to use that experience to develop a strategy that will help unite the University District. University District Councilmember, Wyatt participated in his first Full Council meeting on Tuesday.

Tolbert Announces Buffalo School Board Bid Declares Three Point Program of Progress Buffalo native Bernie Tolbert, a Buffalo native, has declared that he will seek one of the three at-large seats in the upcoming Buffalo School Board Election. Making the announcement in a video broadcast, Tolbert stated that his intent in running for school board is based on his educational background and corporate experience. “Many Buffalonians know me from my recent campaign for Mayor, where education was one of my top priorities. What people may not know is that I was educated in Buffalo elementary schools and Lafayette High School and I worked as a teacher at Bennett High School. I also come from a family of educators, as my mother, my brother Herb, my son Eric, my daughter Nicole and several other family members are, or have been, educators. In addition, I have three decades of administrative experience with some of the most wellrespected and accomplished companies and organizations in America. That combination of professional and personal experiences allows me to evaluate the issues and problems of Buffalo’s Schools from many sides, giving me a unique perspective in dealing with the issues and ways to solve the problems.” Tolbert was joined in his announcement by four generations of his family, variously Continued Page 5

hanneling her inner Shirley Chisholm, Erie County Legislature Minority Leader Betty Jean Grant last Saturday, described herself as “Unbought and Unbossed” and said that the timing of her announcement to run for the 63rd Senate Seat was symbolic in that it occurred at the start of Black History Month and on the eve of Women’s History Month. A Grant victory in the September primary and November general would be historic, making her the first woman and the first African American to represent the constituents who reside in what is now the New York State 63rd Senate District. It is a designation she maintains, that she was cheated out of in 2012 when she came within 139 votes of defeating incumbent Tim Kennedy. “ In 2012 in this same room with a little crew of 15 people and $20,000 we came within 139 votes of winning,” she reminded supporters at the BUILD of Buffalo Headquarters on Jefferson and Utica where she launched this year’s campaign. That election, she said, was “given to somebody else,” and she vowed that the 2014 campaign would have enough money because they are starting early with fundraisers and voter registration drives. She said her opponent was nothing more than a “Republicrat’ whom in 2010 allied with Republicans to give Chris Collins control of the Democratic-controlled Legislature. -Progressive, Inclusive PlatformThe crowd gathered at the BUILD OF BUFFALO office spilled onto the sidewalk as Mrs. Grant was greeted with chants of “Betty! Betty! Betty!” and later, of “Run Betty Run!” Once elected State Senator, she vowed her office would be progressive and inclusive of everyone in the district. Her platform for fairness and equity focuses on jobs, education, public safety and housing rehabilitation. “There has been a billion dollars designed for Buffalo, but you can go one block and not see any of it,” she pointed out. “If each council district were allocated at least $10 million there would still be more than enough left for big ticket items such as the Waterfront and downtown development and anything else the city so deemed. Parts of districts like Cheektowaga and Lackawanna would also benefit.” When you talk about joblessness and lack of quality education, crime etc. she continued, the entire district is included. Grant acknowledged that in Buffalo there are many organizations doing a good job of helping people, but overall she said there’s much more work to be done. “There’s another Buffalo nobody talks about, and that’s the Forgotten Buffalo,” she said,” such as the youth hanging on the street corners because there are no jobs available… You can’t say that Buffalo is on the move if you’re not addressing the issues that impact the Forgotten Buffalo.” -Dedicated ServantBetty Jean Grant has been a dedicated servant leader in this community for years and is known for being one of its most stalwart voices. Trial For Man Who Fatally Shot Jordan Davis, Shows Similarities To Killing of Trayvon Martin JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jury selection began on Monday in the murder trial of a Florida man who fatally shot an unarmed black teenager during an argument over loud music, a racially-charged case that has revived debate over the state's gun control and self-defense laws.
MILLION HOODIES MOVEMENT FOR JUSTICE: In November, 17-year-old Jacksonville resident Jordan Davis, was the only person murdered after Michael Dunn, 46, shot into the SUV Davis was inside several times after an argument about the volume of music playing. Jordan’s mother, Lucy McBath (@lucymcbath) and Jacksonville, Florida Mayor Alvin Brown have proclaimed February 16 to be Jordan Russell Davis Day. The Million Hoodies Movement for Justice has announced plans for a National Day of Action to coincide with Jordan’s birthday on February 16th, 2014. The National Day of Action will consist of people turning their radios all the way up, mobilizing across the country, and signing a petition calling for Justice for Jordan Davis.
Michael Dunn, 47, faces first-degree murder charges in the death of 17-year-old Jordan Davis on Nov. 23, 2012. The white, middle-aged software engineer opened fire on a car with four black teenagers that was parked next to him outside a gas station and convenience store in Florida's northeast city of Jacksonville. Dunn has said he feared for his life, drawing comparisons to George Zimmerman, the former central Florida neighborhood watch guard who was acquitted of murder last year after saying he shot Trayvon Martin, another black 17-yearold, in self-defense. Dunn said he had asked the teenagers to turn down their music. From the back passenger seat, Davis refused and the two exchanged words. Dunn says he opened fire because he thought he saw the barrel of a shotgun pointed out the back window at him, though police found no weapon. The case has garnered national and international media attention because of its racial overtones and self-defense claims. Like Zimmerman, Dunn said he feared a black teenager who was unarmed. If found guilty, Dunn faces life in prison. Prosecutors say they won't seek the death penalty.
Dunn's attorney, Cory Strolla, has filed motions asking the judge not to allow references in the trial to comments Dunn made in jailhouse letters or phone calls where he referred to Davis and to some inmates as "thugs", and made other "alleged racial comments," according to court documents.

White Cop Fired After Hacking Off Woman’s Weave The incident was caught on tape at a suburban Detroit police department on Nov. 13. A white police officer from suburban Detroit is out of a job after she was caught on tape violently hacking off a young hairdresser’s weave during an arrest in November, the Daily News reports. Bernadette Najor was fired from the Warren Police Department in Warren, Mich., after the incident. The incident began on Nov. 13, when Charda Gregory, 22, was arrested for reportedly destroying a room at the Suez Motel in Warren after a night of partying, WXYZTV reports. She told investigators that someone may have put something into her drink, the report says. At the jail, the young hairdresser allegedly became combative with police, who pepper-sprayed her, the News reports. But she was later cuffed into a restraining chair, even though she had calmed down. As Gregory wriggled in agony, Najor began cutting her weave with a large pair of shears while other officers looked on, video broadcast on the station showed. Gregory’s hair was ripped with such force that she suffered some permanent hair loss, her lawyertold WXYZ-TV.

Dabney Announces Bid for City Court Judge “Reclaiming Our Sons & Our Daughters” On December 11, 2013, Phillip Dabney, Jr., Esq. announced his bid for City Court Judge of Buffalo. Dabney brings a wealth of experience, having handled hundreds of high level criminal matters including murder cases, during his stint as an assistant district attorney and presently as a criminal defense attorney in state and federal courts since 2003. Creflo Dollar Speaks About His Prostate Cancer

In a surprise admission, Pastor Creflo Dollar recently opened up about his bout with prostate cancer on the Rickey Smiley Show. According to elev8.com Dollar was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer and amazingly, he is now cancer free. Dollar said when he was diagnosed with cancer that he felt it was important to laugh and keep in good spirits. Upon learning he had cancer he told no one but his wife and took to unusual steps to becoming healthy. Dollar locked himself in a room, fasted and prayed for two weeks and did not talk to anyone. When he went back to the doctor there was no sign of cancer in his body. In addition to feeling great, Dollar also authored a book titled “Overcoming Fear.” Dollar is the founder of World Changers International located in Fulton County, Georgia. World Changers started in a school cafeteria with eight people attending in 1986. The ministry has grown exponentially over the years and now can boast 30,000 members with revenue reaching up to $60 million in gross cash contributions. EXODUS: The Legacy of Bob Marley Robert Nesta “Bob” Marley (February 6, 1945-May 11, 1981) (People around the world will pay tribute this weekend to the man and his music, Bob Marley on the anniversary of what would be his 68th Birthday - the Godfather of Reggae music.) Bob Marley was born in the small village of Nine Mile in Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica as Nesta Robert Marley on February 6, 1945. Marley was a hero figure, in the classic mythological sense. His departure from this planet came at a point when his vision of One World, One Love -- inspired by his belief in Rastafari -- was beginning to he heard and felt. The last Bob Marley and the Wailers tour in 1980 attracted the largest audiences at that time for any musical act in Europe. Bob was a member of the Rastafari movement, whose culture was a key element in the development of reggae. He became a leading proponent of the Rastafari, taking their music out of the socially deprived areas of Jamaica and onto the international music scene. Bob’s story is that of an archetype, which is why it continues to have such a powerful and ever-growing resonance: it embodies political repression, metaphysical and artistic insights, gangland warfare and various periods of mystical wilderness. And his audience continues to widen: to westerners Bob’s apocalyptic truths prove inspirational and life-changing; in the Third World his impact goes much further. Not just among Jamaicans, but also the Hopi Indians of New Mexico and the Maoris of New Zealand, in Indonesia and India and especially in those parts of West Africa from which slaves were plucked and taken to the New World, Bob is seen as a redeemer figure returning to lead this. In the clear Jamaican sunlight you can pick out the component parts of which the myth of Bob Marley is comprised: the sadness, the love, the understanding, the God given talent. Those are facts. And although it is sometimes said that there are no facts in Jamaica, there is one more thing of which we can be certain: Bob Marley never wrote a bad song. He left behind the most remarkable body of recorded work. “The reservoir of music he has left behind is like an encyclopedia,” says Judy Mowatt of the I-Threes. “When you need to refer to a certain situation or crisis, there will always be a Bob Marley song that will relate to it. Bob was a musical prophet.” The tiny Third World country of Jamaica has produced an artist who has transcended all categories, classes, and creeds through a combination of innate modesty and profound wisdom. Bob Marley, the Natural Mystic, may yet prove to be the most significant musical artist of the twentieth century. Bob Marley gave the world brilliant and evocative music; his work stretched across nearly two decades and yet still remains timeless and universal. Marley died of cancer at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami on the morning of May 11, 1981, at the age of 36. His body rests in a mausoleum in his birthplace at Nine Mile, on the north of the island of Jamaica. His legend has conquered the years.
Remembering Richard Lamonte Williams “Flick”
R
ichard Lamonte Williams (Flick) was born in Buffalo, New York on April 15, 1954 to Willis B. (deceased) and Evelyn O. Williams. He departed his earthly journey suddenly on January 26, 2014. Flick has performed in various concerts and other productions throughout the area from the time he was a student in the Buffalo Public Schools. The amazing seed of music was planted in his spirit when as a child he watched his great uncle, Richard Davenport, play his guitar. Also when in his youth his father made him a set of bongos from coffee cans; and his mother encouraged him to explore his gifts. In grade school he took violin, and clarinet lessons. At Woodlawn Jr. High School, he moved on to the saxophone, flute, and was a member of the choir. Flick went on to Buffalo’s East High School and was in the school band, the choir, participated in talent shows; and though he was under age, Flick began playing in clubs with some of the hottest bands in town. It was at this time that he began to write and arrange music in various styles. While at East High, Donald Hilliard, his high school music, arranged for him to audition at Hampton University (Hampton Institute at the time). He was accepted and received a music scholarship. During his stay at Hampton, Flick was active in all aspects of col-

“FLICK WILLIAMS” continued lege life; especially all things musical and drama related. Both while at Hampton and after, Flick had the opportunity to record and tour with many nationally known groups and artists; including Olivia Newton-John, Stevie Wonder, and Rick James. During his career as a musical performer, he also had a hand in acting, writing and producing. One of his more recent collaborations was writing the score for “Nakai and the Red Shoes”, a play written by William Cooper. Flick served as a music teacher in the Buffalo Public School System where he retired in 2013 after almost 30 years of teaching. In his last assignment at Westminster Charter School, he led the choir in winning many local competitions; and also in performing at many venues from City Hall to the M & T Bank summer concert series. Flick had a passion in guiding his students and encouraging them to grow. As one of the founding members of 100 Black Men of Greater Buffalo, he proudly served as the Education Chair which allowed him to further mentor his students in an afterschool program at Westminster Charter School. At various times, he had also worked as a music teacher at the State University of New York at Buffalo’s summer youth program, Musical Director of Ujima Theatre, and was an Artist in Residence at the Buffalo Academy of Visual and Performing Arts. Throughout his career as a writer, arranger, and performer he has never confined himself to one style of music. The one thing that remained constant in his musical journey is writing, exploring, and painting musical pictures in various styles -- from Jazz to Classical, R & B to Reggae, the music is what was important not the label. Flick was called home on January 26, 2014. He leaves to uplift his memory: his mother, Evelyn O. Williams; sister, Sandra (Joseph) Bush; brothers, Steven A. (Debora); Willis Barry (Barbara); and Raymond L. Williams; niece, Elizabeth O. Bonds; and a host of family and friends.

Mayor Brown Celebrates A Significant Achievement At Build Academy In Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown today presented Eighth Grade students at Buffalo Public School 91, BUILD Academy, with Certificates of Achievement for showing the city of Buffalo that recycling can be creative and fun! As part of an art and technology class this past semester, the students built a Recycle Home from recycled materials and documented the entire project, from start to finish, on video. “Buffalo is committed to becoming one of the greenest cities in America, and our recycling program is a leading component in this effort,” said Mayor Brown. “We are proud to bring Buffalo’s recycling program into city schools. I thank the students and staff at BUILD Academy for their creativity and dedication to creating a clean and green Buffalo.” With the support of Principal Michelle Hope, students of Teacher Juliana Curtis worked tirelessly on the project, during class and on their own time. The Recycle Home, built as a recycling center for the school’s ‘bottle and can’ recycling program, was constructed out of reclaimed wood. T
he term Greek philosophy to begin with is a misnomer. There is no such philosophy in existence. The ancient Egyptians had developed a very complex religious system called The Mysteries which was also the first system of salvation. As such, it regarded the human body as a prison house of the soul, which could be liberated from its bodily impediments through disciplines of the arts and sciences and advance from the level of a mortal to that of a God. This was the notion of the summum bonum or greatest good, to which all men must aspire and it also became the basis of all ethical concepts. The Egyptian Mystery System was also a Secret Order and membership was gained by initiation and pledge to secrecy. The teaching was graded and delivered orally to the Neophyte; and under these circumstances of secrecy, the Egyptians developed secret systems of writing and teaching and forbade their initiates from writing what they had learned. After nearly 5,000 years of prohibition against the Greeks, they were permitted to enter Egypt for the purpose of their education. First through the Persian invasion and secondly through the invasion of Alexander the Great. From the sixth century B.C. therefore to the death of Aristotle (322 B.C.) the Greeks made the best of

Dear Editor: I am writing concerning my son and his sentencing which many have felt is an unduly harsh sentence. My son Kevin Abernathy was recently sentenced to three and a half (3 1/2) years in jail for carrying a firearm that he purchased legally. Prior to this situation, my son absolutely had NO criminal record but yet the courts decided to sentence him to 3 1/2 years. I felt that the courts did not take into consideration that my son is an upstanding citizen Before all this transpired my son was employed on his job for three years. He was a manager. On the weekend he volunteered his time as an assistance football coach and a positive role model for children who do not have male role models in their lives. He is a father to two little boys ages 5 and 8. Being incarcerated my son will lose the bond that he has with his children, not to mention what this will do to his boys emotionally once they learn what happened to their father. With my son being incarcerated it means his children will lose a way to be financially supported, it means my son loses his freedom and ability to care for his children. His children are his life and they need their father. I was doing some research and came across an article where it stated that President Obama today (12/19/13) commuted the sentences of eight men and women convicted of crack cocaine offenses, each of whom has served more than 15 years in prison. In a written statement the President stated that “Commuting the sentences of these eight Americans is an important step toward restoring fundamental ideals of justice and fairness, together we must ensure that our taxpayer dollars are spent wisely, and that our justice system keeps its basic promise of equal treatment for all,” he said. That is all I am looking for is fairness for my son. Now, he has lost his job and who knows if he will be able to obtain another one with this over his head. His children has lost there means of financial support from their father, so now the burden falls on me which is unfair to me. My son’s children are beginning to ask almost every day when are we going to see daddy, why can’t we call daddy. Honestly I have no choice but to hide the truth from them because I have no clue how to tell them something I don’t understand myself. Again, it makes me feel very unnerving that my son was not even considered for probation, giving a lesser sentence or released all together. Again, this was his first offense and the sentence he received may ruin his life in the long run. I feel that his sentencing needs to be reevaluated. He is a father, a son a grandson a mentor to other children. He is a good caring person; all I am asking for is fairness for my son. -Nicole Sanders

urely you didn’t miss the controversy that erupted in recent weeks in the wake of the playoff game that sent the Seattle Seahawks to the Superbowl. Surely you didn’t miss the vicious, racist deluge that erupted online as commenters responded to all-pro cornerback Richard Sherman’s adrenaline fueled rant in a post-game interview. In the immediate aftermath, news outlets discussed the events ad nauseam, covering all of the angles they dared to. Some agreed with those who were offended by Sherman, calling him at best, unsportsmanlike. Others touted his college credentials and his side gig as a journalist to rebut the claim that he is a “thug,” a word that they noted was used 625 times on television the next day – far more than it had been used in the last 3 years combined. In the attempt to understand and explain the intensity of the vitriol, pundits noted that Miami Dolphins guard Ritchie Incognito, who bullied teammate Jonathan Martin, and who is White, was never called a thug. Sherman himself talked about the seemingly acceptable violence Sabirah in hockey, and acknowledged that “thug” is the new “n-word.” Black Muhammad studies professors were on hand to discuss the dynamic of such an outburst by a “Black buck” in close proximity to a blonde White woman. Overall, an encouraging consensus recognized and spoke to the double standard that Black athletes are subjected to when their behavior is scrutinized and labeled. Though the discussion commanded the airways, never did it delve deeply enough to broach the core of the conflict…the true source of the withering hatred that caused some to call Sherman a monkey and a gorilla, and suggest that he be introduced to George Zimmerman. No, none dare speak it. Even as the manifest imagery of an NFL that’s nearly 70% Black, and an NBA that’s 80% Black lies before us, you may witness it, cheer for it and bet on it, but the hordes of hell will be loosed if you speak it. You may not pierce the thin veil of the obvious by openly acknowledge the matchless, dominating physical prowess of the Black man. Richard Sherman’s unforgivable, unspeakable crime was to mouth the words: “I-am-the-best.” Sports commentator “Jimmy the Greek” discovered the seriousness of this crime in the infamous 1988 interview that resulted in his firing. Historians would have us believe that Jimmy was shamed, de-frocked and utterly humiliated because his comments about Black athletes were racist. What he said was: “The black is a better athlete to begin with because he's been bred to be that way, because of his high thighs and big thighs that goes up into his back, and they can jump higher and run faster because of their bigger thighs and he's bred to be the better athlete because this goes back all the way to the Civil War when during the slave trade … the slave owner would breed his big black to his big woman so that he could have a big black kid.” He went further. In addition to the factual exposure of the breeding of Blacks on slave plantations, Jimmy tapped into an even bigger fear: “…if blacks take over coaching jobs, like everybody wants them to, there's not to be anything left for white people.” Coupled with insane jealousy over the abilities of the gladiators is the rage over the millions of dollars they command. The online backlash against Lebron James in 2010 certainly compares to the current experience of Richard Sherman. According to ESPN, James, who made the move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat was called “a big nosed, big lipped, bug eyed nigger,” and was told: “Ur greedy, u try to hide ur ghettoness.” Granted, Jimmy the Greek was wrong about the reasons that Black folk excel in sports, and his wording was unsophisticated, degrading and crass. But in fumbling to explain the obvious, he asserted openly that “the Black is a better athlete.” He called attention to the modern day sports plantations, where Black men labor and White men reap the rewards. Jimmy the Greek was destroyed. In advance of Superbowl 2014, Richard Sherman shouts with power and conviction: “I am the best.” Among the supremacist minded, the dim-witted may not even be consciously aware of the complex layers of the rage that they have hurled. But among the refined, those who consciously, scientifically engineer the ideas of White supremacy and Black inferiority, the radar goes off the chart. They lean forward and listen closely…”Is he up yet?” They’re listening for echoes of a man who shouted before the world unceasingly – and then proved… “I’m the greatest! I’m a bad man…and I’m pretty!” They want to know if the young man before them is simply blessed with a healthy dose of self confidence, or if he, like Muhammad Ali, has a deeper knowing, an awareness of self that could rock their world, like Ali did. It was this wide-awake man, who united with his brothers to secure and defend the money he was generating. It was the mighty FOI (Fruit of Islam), led by the Honorable Elijah

Niagara Falls Memorial to Celebrate Black History Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center will honor the contributions of African Americans to U.S. and local history with a health fair and luncheon on Friday, Feb. 21. This year’s theme is “It’s in My Heart.” The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the medical center auditorium with a presentation on “Overcoming Health Disparities.” Blood pressure screenings and wellness information also will be available. A luncheon celebrating Black history will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a keynote address by Lavonne Ansari, Ph.D, president and CEO of Community Health Center of Buffalo, Inc. A community service award will be presented to the Rev. Dr. Frances Douglas. Pastor Douglas, the founder and overseer of True Deliverance Temple, will be honored for her many years of service to the community. The program also will feature musical selections by students from Niagara Street Elementary School and a tribute to the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi. “It’s in My Heart” is free and the public is invited. Muhammad who backed up the mafia when they pressed up on the sport of boxing, and on Ali. It was the realization that sport is business, and that business is warfare that enabled the Hon. Elijah Muhammad to merely send a warning: “Tell the mafia that they got knees too.” That was it. Boxing now stands alone as a sport dominated by Black men, where they command a purse commensurate with their investment. If that kind of consciousness seeps into football and basketball, it’s game over. More next time.

Local Events Celebrate “Our Story” Black Tie For Black History The annual Black Tie for Black History Extravaganza will be held on Friday, February 28 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Tralf. Donation is $25. Honorees include Mary Nicole Douglas, Jason Macklin, James Morrell, Linda Appleby, Bonita Whitlock, Catherine Roberts and Jamil Crews. The community is welcome to join the East Delavan Library in a film screening of Finnigan’s War, a powerful documentary about the Korean War including interviews with the surviving members of The Second Ranger Infantry Company (Airborne) which was the first and only all Black Rangers in the history of the United States Army. The guest speakers will be Ted Kirkland, United States Air Force Veteran, author, columnist and a former radio host: Bobby Ingram, a long-time member of the American Legion, will close the program.

“This Week In Black History” Willie A. Price, president of “Willie A. Price Speaks” and author of several publications including 4 editions of “This Week In Black History” has reached out to several local businesses to present to the community, “This Week In Black History”: (Past, Present and Future). He approached three local business owners and asked them to donate the use of their business locations to put on his “free” events. Those business owners welcomed the ideal of the presentations and opening their doors to the community. Those Businesses are “The Foundry”, “Jazzy’s” Restaurant and the “Oakk Room” Restaurant All events are “Free” and open to the public: The Foundry: February 8th, 12-3pm. The event at Jazzy’s Restaurant will also have a Gospel Brunch (fund raiser) available, February 15th 12-3pm.
