Mayor Brown Gets Independence Endorsement New York Independence Chairman Frank S. MacKay announced last Tuesday that the party is endorsing incumbent Mayor Byron Brown in his bid for re-election, creating a ballot presence for Brown in the November general election despite the outcome of the September Primary. Brown is also expected to gain backing from the Conservative Party. Republican mayoral candidate Sergio R. Rodriguez sees the whole thing “back room” political dealing. “Over the past few months my campaign has made numerous attempts to reach out to the out-of-town Independence Party chairman to no avail,” said Rodriguez. MacKay is from Long Island and there is no local organization. “Back room political deals like this are why people have lost faith in the political system.”

“I Gave No Such Endorsement” R
ev. William Gillison, pastor of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Buffalo and a leading clergyman in WNY, issued a rebuttal to a widely published article which listed him among a host of local ministers who are reportedly supporting Mayor Brown for re-election. The article, which appeared first on a Democratic Web-Site, was also published in ArtVoice, The Criterion and in the Challenger Community News. “I gave no such endorseREV. GILLISON ment,” declared Rev. Gillison in an email to The Challenger Community News. Following is the full text of his rebuttle: “Last week there was an article that appeared on a Democratic web-site, Art Voice and the Challenger newspapers. The article carried the names of a number of my colleagues and friends, who according to the article are supporting Mayor Byron Brown for re-election. “First let me say that when it comes to political endorsements it is your right to support whoever you wish, without the fear of retaliation. My problem with the article is one that I discussed with the Mayor before this article went to the newspapers, and that is, I gave no such endorsement, neither did I do or say anything that would have indicated that one would be forthcoming. “Before last week’s article came out I shared with the Mayor, that in respect to an endorsement, I was choosing to wait and see who all of the candidates were and what platform they were running on. This is the same advice that I have been giving others over the years when it comes to political candidates. “I am not very comfortable having to write a rebuttal to something that did not have to occur, there was time to remove my name and church, so in reference to the article stating that I am endorsing the Mayor for another term, I gave no such endorsement.”

Juneteenth Festival Concession Information Dr. Brown
Ministers Voice Support for School Superintendent Brown Brown highly qualified to lead Buffalo schools We, the undersigned pastors, are greatly disturbed by the comments of the representative for the Buffalo Board of Education from the Park District as reported in The News. Carl Paladino unfairly questioned the competency of Superintendent Pamela C. Brown. Brown comes to Buffalo as a highly qualified and celebrated educator and should be given an opportunity to right the many ills of the Buffalo Public School District. To suggest that her appointment was not based on merit or to question her competency is not fair, honest or just. Brown’s experience includes years spent in the classroom and in administration. She has served all over this country, in urban and non-urban settings, and she was educated at some of the world’s most highly regarded academic institutions. Her appointment was the result of a nationwide search. She is eminently qualified! Lastly, to call for her ouster while giving her only 10 months on the job is paramount to asking her to work miracles. She is an educator, not the Almighty. She deserves more time to fix the decades of problems she inherited. Solutions should not be expected overnight. What we should expect is for candidates for public office to be civil, honest and wellinformed. The comments of Paladino demonstrate that he is none of the above. National/International NEWS West Calls Obama “War Criminal” France to Buy American Drones 4
MAY22, 2013
for Mali Operation
by Jacob Chamberlain In an interview with the Guardian published on Sunday, renowned professor and prolific critic of the “military-industrial-complex” and rampant “plutocracy” in the U.S. and around the world, Dr. Cornel West explained his views on the state of America today and his fall from grace, by design, with President Barack Obama: “He’s just too tied to Wall Street. And at this point he is a war criminal.” “They say I’m un-American,” West told interviewer Hugh Muir, referring to Obama’s team. But from someone who actively campaigned for the man, only to be quickly and vastly disappointed, West sees in Obama the epitome of Washington corruption: “He talked about Martin Luther King over and over again as he ran,” West said of their campaign stops together, adding later, “You can’t just invoke Martin Luther King like that and not follow through on his priorities in some way.” “King died fighting not just against poverty but against carpet-bombing in Vietnam; the war crimes under Nixon and Kissinger.” West goes on: “You can’t meet every Tuesday with a killer list and continually have drones drop bombs. You can do that once or twice and say: ‘I shouldn’t have done that, I’ve got to stop.’ But when you do it month in, month out, year in, year out – that’s a pattern of behavior.” “I think there is a chance of a snowball in hell that he will ever be tried, but I think he should be tried and I said the same about George Bush. These are war crimes. We suffer in this age from an indifference toward criminality and a callousness to catastrophe when it comes to poor and working people.” “I knew he would have rightwing opposition, but he hasn’t tried,” West said of Obama’s unwillingness to curb Wall Street’s hold on Washington. “When he came in, he brought in Wall Street-friendly people – Tim Geithner, Larry Summers – and made it clear he had no intention of bailing out homeowners, supporting trade unions.” And later: “And he hasn’t said a mumbling word about the institutions that have destroyed two generations of young black and brown youth, the new Jim
Crow, the prison industrial complex. It’s not about race. It is about commitment to justice. H e should be able to say that in the last f e w years, with the s h i f t f r o m 300,000 Dr.Cornel West inmates to 2.5 million today, there have been unjust polices and I intend to do all I can. Maybe he couldn’t do that much. But at least tell the truth. I would rather have a white president fundamentally dedicated to eradicating poverty and enhancing the plight of working people than a black president tied to Wall Street and drones.” This article previously appeared in Common Dreams.

Few surprised that France will stay in Mali indefinitely Ramin Mazaheri, Press TV, Paris Mon May 20, 2013 -- When France surprisingly went to war in Mali last January they repeatedly promised their offensive was only temporary. But, in a declaration that’s caused little surprise internationally, the French Defense Minister said France will keep around a thousand troops in Mali indefinitely, and that the force could “intervene in neighboring countries…to intervene in any terrorist activity. “For many, it seems that France is reverting to its longtime role as the self-appointed policeman of Africa, with the socalled “global war on terror” as justification. France is reportedly set to buy two drone aircraft from the United States for use in Mali. Critics note that drones are often used for extrajudicial assassinations outside of outside war zones. Many believe that France will create the same situation in Mali as they have done in Ivory Coast. For ex-French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s close personal friend, and ultimately the last decade a UN-sponsored army, composed almost entirely of French soldiers, has protected French interests. In 2011, following a tightly-contested election, the force decisively protected Alassane Ouattara, sent incumbent president Laurent Gbagbo to the International Criminal Court. -American DronesTwo of America’s medium-altitude Reaper drones will be sold to France as backup for the country’s operations against so-called Islamist rebels in Mali. The news comes from the ‘Air et Cosmos’ specialist magazine, which reported online that a deal had been reached between France and the United States for the sale of two non-armed MQ-9 units. The French air force had already deployed a European-made Harfang drone to Mali, although any purchase of the US Reapers directly from the manufacturer (as was done with Harfang) is expected to delay delivery by seven

months. In a bid to curb the spread of Al Qaeda-linked militants in the northern parts of its former colony, France started a military operation in January of this year. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius declared on January 30 that they would be out of there “quickly.” Since that time, that number has risen to 4,000, while the departure date had been moved up. Currently, the idea is that half will leave by July, when Mali holds their presidential election.

Waiting For Them To Die

he American people, Corporate America, and the Government of America, have hated Vietnam veterans, since the Vietnam war started, and ended, because they represent the only American Military Force that was purposely exposed to one of the deadliest poisons known to man... Dioxin - the lethal element in Agents Orange, Green , Blue, and White! How could a Government purposely plan to expose their troops to a deadly poison, while expecting them to fight proudly for the nation they loved and honored? Here’s how! With the manpower numbers dropping, and nowhere to replenish the war effort, a plan was devised by Washington. The plan was Project 1000,000!!! What is that ? In 1966, during the Johnson administration, there was a shortage of manpower to fight the Vietnam war. Many white males, who would had been eligible to be drafted and sent to the war, left the country to avoid being drafted to serve. Sylvester Stallone included. America hated its’ military so much, that we were called baby killers, and spit on when we returned home. Then to add insult to injury, the media used a guy who fled the country to avoid being drafted, as its’ Vietnam hero in the movies and called him ‘Rambo’ - a fake soldier and a fake patriot, yet more suitable to America, then the men and women who actually served, fought, and died in Vietnam! America wasn’t too kind to Black Americans either. Especially to Black soldiers. All of us crossed paths with ‘Jim Crow’ attitudes from all levels in the military during this period. Many of us were given unfair discharges, and misleading or incorrect psychological, and performance evaluations, which have effected their lives right to this present day!! In the beginning (1966), Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara realized that he had to get manpower from somewhere, so he and Congress-

man Daniel Patrick Moynihan came up with the racist idea to lower the physical and mental qualifications for admission into the Military...all branches! McNamara said that this new program, Project 100,000 would uplift America’s “subterranean poor”and cure them of the“idleness, ignorance, and apathy” which marked their lives.” He was talking about poor young Black man throughout urban America! s talking about the high failure rates e Armed Forces QualificationTest, by Blacks and Hispanics! I joined the U.S. Navy, I wasn’t drafted, and four of my friends from my block also joined the military, by passing the AFQT! It was seriously believed that Black soldiers were not intelligent enough, nor motivated enough to make good soldiers. And that same theory was the universal though of most White Americans during WW 1, WWII, the Korean war. I guess the Tuskegee Airmen, and many other all Black units that fought during those wars, were also interior? POHT took in 149,000 ‘New Standards Men’ (that’s what they called these new recruits), in the first year. 9000 more then McNamara’s first projection. Most of these men were in combat, combat areas, or exposed to hostile and dangerous conditions everyday! I worked on a ‘hatch team,’ unloading the hundreds of ships that brought war supplies, that Continued Page 11

Ways To Lower Blood Pressure Naturally Part II-Conclusion 8. Switch to decaf coffee 9. Take up tea Lowering high blood pressure is as easy as one, two, tea: Study participants who sipped 3 cups of a hibiscus tea daily lowered systolic blood pressure by 7 points in 6 weeks on average, say researchers from Tufts University—results on par with many prescription medications. Those who received a placebo drink improved their reading by only 1 point. The phytochemicals in hibiscus are probably responsible for the large reduction in high blood pressure, say the study authors. Many herbal teas contain hibiscus; look for blends that list it near the top of the chart of ingredients— this often indicates a higher concentration per serving. 10. Work (a bit) less Putting in more than 41 hours per week at the office raises your risk of hypertension by 15%, according to a University of California, Irvine, study of 24,205 California residents. Overtime makes it hard to exercise and eat healthy, says Haiou Yang, PhD, the lead researcher. It may be difficult
to clock out super early in today’s tough economic times, but try to leave at a decent hour—so you can go to the gym or cook a healthy meal— as often as possible. Set an end-of-day message on your computer as a reminder to turn it off and go home. Follow these tips to make your weekends stress-free. DID NOAH FISH? A Sunday school teacher asked, “Johnny, do you think Noah did a lot of fishing when he was on the Ark ?” “No,” replied Johnny. “How could he, with just two worms.”

Mary J. Blige’s Financial Storm... Mary J. Blige‘s financial situation continues to worsen. Specifically, it’s quadrupled! Here’s what TMZ is reporting: Mary J. Blige’s financial woes have QUADRUPLED — on top of the $900k she allegedly owes the Garden State, TMZ has learned MJB has been slapped with a $3.4 MILLION bill from Uncle Sam. The IRS filed a federal tax lien against the Grammy winner, claiming she failed to pay all her income taxes for the years 2009 ($574,907.30), 2010 ($2,203,743.53) and 2011 ($647,604.60). Tax bill grand total: $3,426,255.43. Translation: A LOT OF FREAKING MONEY. Of course, the IRS needs to get in line … the State of NJ says MJB still owes $901,769.65 in back taxes. Blige is being sued for allegedly defaulting on a $2.2 million bank loan and her charity is facing a lawsuit that claims it took out a $250k loan and never paid it back.

GENTLEMEN OF FUTURES ACADEMY SCHOOL #37 & THEIR MENTORS
Trained Male Mentors Prepare Boys for Life and Gentlemen’s Day at Futures Academy, School #37 It’s growing! More qualified young adult and seasoned African American men are being trained to become mentors to male students in a unique school program called project S.O.W. (Schools of Wisdom). Buffalo News editor, Rod Watson said it best in his weekly commentary, “They have one thing in common: A desire to give back by preparing the next generation.” Under the direction of Rev. Gene Coplin and his 24 year old son Genetino Coplin, this award winning program brings with it quantitative data highlighting the success of the program since 2006. Public schools in Niagara Falls, Cheektowaga Central, and Sweet Home School District have lauded the program. Dr. Tonja Williams, principal of Futures Academy School #37 will get a unique spin on the program this year! All the 8th boys at Futures Academy Public School #37 want to make history at their school. Besides working to increase their academics and improve their attitudes through unique workshops taught in the project S.O.W. program, they are going to exercise their
leadership skills by doing something they hope all the 8th grade girls will remember in their “future”. IT’S CALLED…GENTLEMEN’S DAY! On May 29 all the 8th grade boys (gentlemen) will be assigned a specific 8th grade girl (queens). They will carry their books throughout the day, open doors for them, and speak “positive words of life” to them. A beautiful limousine will pick up all the girls (queens) and transport them to school on this day. As the limo arrives in front of the school, the boys (gentlemen) will escort them into the building. All of our 8th grade boys (gentlemen) have been assigned a trained adult male mentor that will not only be there to observe the event but to mentor them for the next 4 years to help get them through high school and into college (Yes Buffalo Program). Media is invited and there will be a live remote radio broadcast on hand as well. (WUFO 1080am). The limo is scheduled to arrive at school by 10 am. There will be a brief auditorium program and refreshments.
Would you like to become a volunteer? Would you like to sponsor a child in our program? Please contact Rev. Coplin at: Project-lee@hotmail.com or call us (716) 9060375.

Wisteria School Brings Waldorf Education to the City of Buffalo Wisteria, a Waldorf-initiative school, is committed to addressing the educational needs of the whole child, allowing students to realize their own unique capabilities. Now enrolling for kindergarten through grade four, it is Wisteria’s vision to make Waldorf Education financially accessible to a wide range of individuals, and preserve the spirit of urban populations. In a visit to Western New York, Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu urged educational policymakers, reformers and the like to consider AfricanCentered schools. These schools utilize hallmarks of the Diaspora such as storytelling and music, arts and illustration. He called for minimal use of textbooks, allowing for a fuller experience—a hands-on curriculum. Kunjufu noted that these strategies prevent 4th grade fatigue—an age where he contends that Black, particularly boys, lose interest in school and have difficulty regaining a true love and appreciation for learning. Therefore, if you have had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Kunjufu speak you've already heard of the benefits of a Waldorf education in our community! The time has come to examine what works from an international perspective, as our youth must be poised to make healthy contributions to a global community. To learn more about Waldorf Education visit Wisteria School’s May Faire Family Festival which is free and open to the public on Saturday, May 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Burke's Green Park (216 Beard Avenue at the corner of Morris and Depew). visit us @ challengercn. com

MAKING IT PLAIN...
Dr. Jerome McNeil
Shock And Awe: The Real Mayoral Contest Set To Begin Scorched earth… It's all out war in the race for Mayor between Bernie Tolbert and Byron Brown. Casey the Destroyer! Sources tell Dr. Neal that Casey is set to throw everything they can muster at Tolbert to personally destroy him, his family and anyone who dares to support him. Translation: When facing the African American community, Brown has no record to run on. The only strategy for reelection is to double down on sleaze and dirty politics. God help you, Mr. Tolbert; there is a bullseye on your back and a torpedo aimed straight at you and the good name of your family. The Racketeering Files Speaking of sleaze and corruption, the Brown, Casey, Smith pay to play conspiracy case is still alive in federal court. The judge refuses to dismiss civil and racketeering charges. We're told that with Tim Wannamaker's case out of the way, the trio is starting to feel some relief. Translation: The constant press scrutiny from the Buffalo News is gone. The dogs have been called off for now. City Hall continues to stonewall the investigation, refusing to cooperate and respond to repeated request for information. But how much have taxpayers spent on legal fees to represent Brown, Casey and Smith? Will the city of Buffalo re-elect a Mayor who may be convicted on federal charges? The Smith Files No shame whatsoever! Brown co-conspirator, Demone Smith, was back in the spotlight last week. A scathing interview by Jim Heany of Investigative Post regarding serial election law violations and mounting civil penalties left Smith speechless suffering a sudden case of brain lock. And after the fiasco at Friends of the Elderly involving the questionable use of Smith's block grant funds, we can only wonder how much longer voters in the Masten district will tolerate his behavior. Ring. Ring. Wrong Number! In case you missed it, Mo, the Crusher, Garner - founder of Grassroots Inc, super lobbyist and Brown best buddy - made a rare media appearance last week thanks to Tom Precious of the Buffalo News. The Crusher denied any involvement in G&L Consulting (aka Garner and Lowe) and distanced himself from longtime friend Melvin Lowe who was fingered in an FBI investigation involving convicted former state senator Shirley Huntlley and five of her senate emocratic colleagues. The upshot: Garner’s lobbying and consulting clients (notably Ciminelli Construction and Oak Hill Construction) are scared to death of being linked to an FBI investigation and will shut off the spigot at the first sight of trouble. The bank shot: Casey the Destroyer will use any means necessary put a wedge between Garner and city hall. The net result will be to cut off any access to the $1.1million of campaign funds Garner was hoping to siphon off this summer. Check, please! Embattled democratic chairman, Jeremy Zellner, puzzled many insiders when he sidestepped his executive committee and city zone chairs and signaled his support for Brown’s third term before the party endorsement process even began. Translation: Zellner is inexperienced and naively believes he can usher in a peace deal among Erie County''s warring democratic factions and win favor with team Cuomo before the 2014 election. Rumor has it that he has cut a deal for himself in exchange for a Brown endorsement. As the old folks say, "Youth is wasted on the young." Continued Page 13

WAITING FOR THEM TO DIE continued
included millions of barrels of Agent Orange. And I also worked at a field hospital outside of the city of Danang, and served as a signalman for the hundreds of Medivac helicopters bringing in the wounded and dead every night. To make a long story short, America used these so-called ‘New Standards Men’ (NSM) for the duration of the war, hoping that many would not survive, either the combat that iswar, or the exposure to Dioxin, the chemical the government knew was deadly but expose us to it anyway. Agent Orange, White, Green, and Blue. NSM were promised a whole new life, after serving in Vietnam complete with benefits, school, opportunities never before realized by us poor dumb Blacks! But we got nothing upon our return to America!! And when America showed its rage toward us for fighting a socalled unjust war, we became Americas biggest problem. We were plagued by drugs, mental disorders, alcohol abuse, homelessness, unemployment, prison and the list goes on and RAMBO’S ROOTS: African- on! Medical problems are our Americans can lay claim to biggest issues right now, from being the inspiration to the being exposing all of us to Diaction film series Rambo. oxin. United States Marine Sergeant News flash!!!! The millions Rambo Ross heroically fought during the Vietnam War. As of cases that the VA has backthe stories of Rambo’s hero- logged, are the claims of Vietics spread, the fact that he was nam Veterans, not Iraq or Afan African-American was lost. ghanistan veterans! Sylvester Stallone portrayed America treats them very Rambo in the series. well. They are not homeless, many are in school, or Vocational training programs, given jobs, and they are being treated for PTSD and Brain trauma injuries immediately. Many Vietnam veterans are just now dying in their 50’s, 60’s and 70’s from the medical and mental issues they got from serving in Vietnam. Many with their claims for disabilities still not adjudicated, some for as long as have my claim before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. It took me 46 years to get to this point. In my many years of dealing with the VA, and my claim, I mastered the skill of writing claims. I have written most of my own claims, and thousands of other claims for Vietnam veterans, and most of them have been successful, in one form or another. Yet every claim of a Vietnam veteran took a lot of work and a lot of patience; the VA system fought us tooth and nail to ‘not’ payout disability compensation to any of us! Unlike todays Afghanistan and Iraq veterans who are taken care of immediately upon becoming veterans. Many Vietnam veterans are still waiting for fair adjudication to thei claims, but because they come out of the POHT era, the VA has stalled handling those so many still pending claims, to save money. So for your information, the VA backlog is mostly claims from Vietnam veterans, who the Veterans Administration is waiting for to die! These claims represent millionsdollars that the VA doesn’t have to pay, if the veterans dies. In the past year, in just the city of Buffalo, NY. alone, more then 50 Vietnam veterans have died without having their claims adjudicated. All dying from conditions caused by exposure to Agent Orange! Check the records, do your own research! Just this past September 27, 2012, Robert Lee”Buck” Buchanan, a Vietnam veterans, died from Stage 4 Liver Cancer. Prior to his death, I wrote up his claim for him and his new wife. We

Is Democratic Party Poised to Endorse Byron Brown over Objections of Party Faithfuls?
O
n Saturday, May 11, Democratic committee members of the Buffalo City Zone Chairs met with Erie County Democratic Chairman, Jeremy Zellner, at their new headquarters on Seneca Street, to discuss the possibility of endorsing a candidate for the Mayor of Buffalo. According to our souces, even though a vast majority of City Zone leaders present recommended ‘No Endorsement’ in this election, Chairman Zellner stated that he will recommend an endorsement of Mayor Byron Brown. Many Zone Chairs , including Betty Jean Grant, Arthur O. Eve, Jr., Karen Ellington, Leonard Williams and Ivory Payne, expressed their personal and political disappointment in the endorsement of Brown. Yet Zellner sreadfastly insisted on bringing forth the name of Brown at the upcoming Democratic Party Executive Committee scheduled to be convened on Thursday, May 16th. There are currently two announced candidates for the Mayoral Race, Byron Brown and Former FBI agent, Bernie Tolbert. Candidate Sergio Rodriguez is a Republican and as such, will face the winner of the September Primary in the November General Election. Since the Executive consists of 45 At- Large members who can vote with the 28 City Zones Chairs, Mr. Zellner will have more than enough votes to overrule the zone chairs who represent the City of Buffalo and give the endorsement to a candidate who has not worked with the leaders and officers of the Democratic Party, including Mr. Zellner, in years. It can also be said that Mayor Brown and his minion, Steve Casey, have worked to undermine not only Len Lenihan and his Democratic chairmanship but also sought to give control of the Erie County legislature in 2010, to then County Executive Chris Collins and his Republican cohorts. The Democratic Party should not be rewarding such treason with an endorsement! Mayor Brown and his Machivellian way of dealing with his political opponents and so-called enemies, has cast a pall of fear and intimidation on all those who they think are not falling in line behind them. Mr. Zellner, by ‘giving’ the not earned endorsement to Byron Brown, once again shows the ugly side of politics aka “politricks” and what money can buy. Surely the former candidate for Erie County Chairman (and Byron Brown’s choice, last year, for this position), Frank Max, can agree with this. submitted the claim, requesting that because of his condition, his claim be treated as that of a catastrophic veteran. This did not happen! Buck died before they did anything to his claim, but just recently (these past three weeks), his wife was notified that because they were not married long enough, she could not collect his disability! So nobody got paid ! Even though this veterans was entitled to disability because he had liver cancer from exposure to agent orange, his wife got nothing. To Be Continued
