INSIDE ROCHESTER

Rochester’s Lafayette Gerst Wins Medical Fight And Graduates from Hampton University An elbow to the face during a basketball game spiraled Lafayette Gerst of Rochester, into dizziness and vision loss. The blow followed a series of throbbing headaches the Hampton University graduate student had been experiencing daily for weeks. It often felt like his brain was swelling and pressing against his skull, he said. The added symptoms from the blow to his face prompted Gerst, 26, to visit Lafayette Gerst the emergency room the next morning. The doctor delivered news that crushed his plans to graduate with a master’s degree in counseling, with an emphasis on student affairs. Gerst had a brain tumor. The tumor was at the top of his brain stem and the size of a quarter in diameter. It was benign. There was no way to know how long it had been there or how rapidly it was growing. If the tumor got larger, it could shut down the flow of fluid to his brain and kill him, the doctor said. There was no knowing how long he’d live if it wasn’t removed. He could fall asleep that night and not wake up, the doctor told him. Surgery would knock him out of school from three weeks to three months. Gerst only had three credit hoursleft to complete his degree requirements. He sat MARSHA in class the week before surgery, only half-listening to lectures. A myriad of thoughts rushed through his mind. “Will I be able to finish school? There’s so much work I’ll have to do when I get back. I can’t believe I have a tumor in my head.” Spencer Baker, his HU advisor and coordinator of the graduate program in counseling, said Gerst had completed enough internship hours to cover the three credit hours he needed to earn his graduate degree (he earned a bachelor’s degree in art from HU in 2007). He told Gerst to focus on surgery and recovery. It was the simple act of walking across the stage on his own that had him most excited about graduating. “That’s my main thing. To walk with balance. I can do it,” he said. “It’s just a blessing. I’m very excited, I’m very happy.” He accomplished that feat last Sunday, May 8 during ceremonies at Hampton. His proud mom Lisa Gerst was there to witness and to share in that triumphant day. Gert’s post-graduation plan is to work as a college counselor, and his dream is to open his own expressive-art therapy clinic.

White House releases Obama birth certificate

The White House released the president’s long form birth certificate in an attempt to put “birther” questions to rest. “The President believed the distraction over his birth certificate wasn’t good for the country. It may have been good politics and good T.V., but it was bad for the American people and distracting from the many challenges we face as a country,” White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said in a statement. Low Income Communities and News Update People of Color Remain Most Tragic! Boat Carrying 600 African Migrants Fleeing Libya Affected by Great Recession Sinks At Sea Unemployment for Blacks is MILAN – A ship carrying up to 600 African migrants trying to flee Libya has sunk off the coast of the North African country, the U.N. Refugee Agency said Monday, citing witness accounts. The agency is trying to confirm what happened to the passengers when the vessel broke apart at sea shortly after leaving a port near Libya’s capital Tripoli on Friday, spokeswoman Laura Boldrini said. There was no information on how many people might have died, and the uprising in Libya makes any official accounting unlikely. Witnesses who departed on another boat shortly after reported seeing the ship broken apart and bodies floating in the sea. The second boat with witnesses aboard arrived later in Italy. The number of migrants fleeing North Africa’s shores have increased since the region has been engulfed in a series of uprisings. At least three other boats that departed Libya in late March have disappeared, with hundreds feared dead. Boldrini said the incidence of deaths and disappearances among seafaring migrants fleeing unrest and repressive regimes in Africa is increasing as smugglers begin to use bigger boats that they are not capable of controlling. In another case, relayed by an Eritrean priest in Rome to Boldrini, a boat with more than 70 people on board ran into trouble in the seas, she said. Only a handful survived, making their way back to Libya, according to the priest. London’s Guardian newspaper reported on Monday that 61 African migrants died of hunger and thirst on that ship after being ignored by a NATO warship and helicopter in March around the time the alliance was readying for military strikes against the Gadhafi regime. NATO denied the accusation.

New York, N.Y. The Center for Social Inclusion has released a report entitled, “2011 Recession Impact Index: How States Continue to be Burdened by the Recession.” The report analyzes the affect of the Great Recession on various communities by using multiple variables as indicators of people’s interests and basic needs including: healthcare, jobs, affordability and poverty, among other variables. Using data to capture how states faired at the end of the Recession, CSI found a trend that those communities most affected by the Recession are low income communities and communities with large minority populations. “The recession is a depression for most communities of color and cannot be called “over” for most ordinary Americans,” stated Maya Wiley, Executive Director of the Center for Social Inclusion. “The so-called ‘end of the Recession’ has domi-nated the media, providing false justification for the latest round of cuts in the 2011 federal budget even as statistics prove people continue to suffer.”

Sarah Palin Praises George Bush, Not BlackAgendaReport.com President Obama For Osama Death Despite successfully ordering the killing of Osama Bin Laden, President Obama still can’t get praise from one of his biggest critics; Republican Sarah Palin. ABC News reports that the former Governor of Alaska gave a speech Recently where she sang praises not to the current President Of The United States but to former President George Bush. Speaking to a crowd on the campus of Colorado Christian University, Palin opted not to say Obama’s name but said, “We want to thank our president,” before quickly shifting focus to President Bush. “We thank President Bush for having made the right calls to set up this victory.”

Glenn Beck: “Hey Let’s Kill Obama…I Mean Bin Laden” Fox news made the supposed blunder yesterday on their news program with a caption reading, “Obama Bin Laden Dead.” Glenn Beck discussed the killing of Osama Bin Laden on his Fox news show and referred to him as Obama. Feds launch investigation of Newark police dept. By theGrio NEWARK, N.J. -- The Department of Justice announced Monday an investigation into allegations of excessive force, discriminatory policing and other violations by the police department of New Jersey’s largest city. The move comes eight months after the state American Civil Liberties Union complained of rampant misconduct and lax internal oversight in the Newark Police Department, though federal and city officials said the ACLU’s petition wasn’t the main reason for the probe. U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said justice officials will also look into allegations of poor treatment of detainees in holding cells and will investigate whether officers have retaliated against those who legally observe, or record, police activity. “Our goal remains the same, to ensure that the people of Newark are served by a police force that effectively fights crimes and enjoys the confidence and respect of the community it serves,” he said. Newark has long been one of the most violent and poorest cities in New Jersey.

Who Owns Africa? Apparently, White People Still Do Speaking at a New York City forum titled “Fifty Years After Uhuru, Who Owns Africa?” Black Star News publisher Milton Allimadi said Britain, France and the United States are intent on reestablishing control over Libya’s immense wealth. Why would anti-Gaddafi rebels in Benghazi agree to accept an African Union peace plan, “when France and Great Britain are willing to do their fighting for them?”

McKinney: Attack on Gaddafi Family Shows Obama as “War Criminal” “If there was anyone who doubted our president was a war criminal, there is no doubt anymore,” says former Georgia congresswoman and Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney. The deaths of Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi’s three grandchildren and youngest son in a NATO attack “is cold-blooded murder,” and proof that “the Black man in the White House is as bad or worse than any of the white men who have been in the White House.” McKinney has made several trips to Libya.

What Happened to the U.S. Anti-War Movement? The anti-war movement nearly collapsed with the election of Barack Obama because “people who identified with the Democratic Party, in particular, reduced their participation and activism,” says Dr. Michael T. Heaney, of the University of Michigan, part of a team that studied the movement from January 2007 to December 2009. In addition, many erstwhile activists “no longer felt an acute sense of threat from the political system that they felt during the Bush years.” here, or, we don’t have the forms.”

Study finds Congestive Heart Failure Patients benefit from Tai Chi Local Taoist Tai Chi Society members experienced heart-related benefits

“Tai chi exercise, a multi-component mind-body training modality that is safe and has good rates of adherence, may provide value in improving daily exercise, quality of life, self-efficacy and mood in frail … patients with systolic heart failure,” wrote the researchers, Gloria Y. Yeh, M.D., M.P.H., of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, Boston, and her colleagues. We offer classes in the Taoist Tai Chi Society internal arts of health locally and invite you to come and observe our classes and interview our students and instructors on how Tai Chi has helped them, particularly with keeping their heart healthy or making congestive heart failure more tolerable. The article is published in the Archives of Internal Medicine on April 26, http://archinte.ama-assn.org/cgi/ content/abstract/171/8/750. The study involving heart failure follows several recent studies that suggest that Tai Chi can help people with depression, fibromyalgia and arthritis. Tai Chi can improve the quality of life for people with congestive heart failure, according to a study published in April 26 in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Contrary to earlier medial beliefs that people with heart failure were to ill to exercise and couldn’t benefit from it, the study showed improved quality of life and mood with Tai Chi, the researchers said. The study involved 100 people with heart failure. Half practiced Tai Chi for one hour twice a week for 12 weeks and the other half were given health education twice a week. The Tai Chi group showed more selfconfidence in their ability to exercise, were more active in their daily lives and had stronger feelings of well-being than the education-only group.

FREEDOM RIDERS: “Freedom Riders” will premiere locally on WNED-TV on Monday May 16 at 9 p.m. This powerful, inspirational film documents a pivotal turning point in American history and features testimony from the Riders themselves. They were Black and White, young and old, male and female, northern and southern. For six months in 1961, more than 400 self-proclaimed Freedom Riders risked their lives – many enduring beatings, imprisonment, mob violence and bitter racism – for traveling together on buses and trains through the Deep South.

I

n May 1961, more than 400 activists made the conscious yet dangerous choice to take their lunch-counter protests against segregation to public transportation. Many boarded Greyhound buses bound from Nashville, Tennessee to Birmingham, Alabama in an effort to dismiss the “back of the bus” segregation. This group of students and activists would come to be known as the Freedom Riders. Sparking the civil rights movement, the Freedom Riders decided to challenge the rulings of cases like the “separate but equal” decision by blatantly going where “white only” had gone before. The first batch of riders had nearly accomplished their goal of riding from Washington to New Orleans peacefully until they reached Alabama’s KKK territory. They were nearly to their destination when someone threw a homemade bomb into the bus. Among those riders was future Rep. John Lewis. The Freedom Riders’ efforts weren’t limited to bus lines. That same year, President John F. Kennedy sent John Seigenthaler to assist the riders in a secret flight to New Orleans. They were successful. The Freedom Riders continued their fight, often with resistance and hours of waiting in bus terminals, until the efforts were broken by violence. The Freedom Riders set a precedent that eventually ended segregation in public transportation. In six months of their first rides, the Interstate Commerce Commission issued a statement that read, “Seating aboard this vehicle is without regard to race, color, creed or national origin.” This year marks the 50th anniversary of the historic Freedom Riders. Over 400 former riders are gathering to commemorate their heroic efforts. Forty college students will retrace the steps of civil rights in a ride in their own freedom ride that stops in Nashville on May 12th.

D.C. Parents Claim Victory as School Voucher Program for Disadvantaged Children is Restored and Expanded
Washington, D.C.- Beginning this September, children in low-income Washington, D.C. families will once again have the opportunity to use school vouchers to attend the private schools of their parents’ choice—thanks to an historic budget agreement championed by U.S. House Speaker John Boehner and signed last month by President Barack Obama. Since the program’s inception in 2004, students participating in the Opportunity Scholarship Program have posted strong graduation rates and reading improvement. According to a study by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute for Education Sciences, students who were offered, and who used, scholarships posted a 91 percent high school graduation rate—more than 30 percentage points higher than the graduation rates in D.C.’s public schools. So This is Why Bootleg Movies Are Paul Robeson On The Rise... Theatre Closes The average movie ticket cost Season With Cheryl L. $8.01 in 2010. It was $4.35 in 1995, West’s Jar The Floor and $2.94 in 1982. No wonder why The Paul Robeson Theatre at the African American Cultural Center closes out its 2010-2011 season with Jar the Floor by Cheryl L. West, now though May 22 at 350 Masten Avenue. Jar the Floor is a comedy-drama about four generations of women gathered for the 90th birthday celebration of the family matriarch. Between toxic mother-daughter (and granddaughter) snide asides and direct hits, conversation topics range from breast cancer to lesbianism to cosmetic surgery to single parenting - and West balances hilarity and reality deftly in a story that is familiar, funny, unnerving and thoroughly entertaining. “This show is a perfect close to our season and for the much anticipated Mother’s Day Dinner Theater! The dialogue touches on important, controversial and timely subject matter, in a script that’s part sunshine and part rain,” said PRT Artistic Director Paulette D. Harris, who is also directing the production. The cast features Betty Stone as MaDear the matriarch; Debbi Davis, who appeared in the last PRT production, Crumbs from the Table of Joy, as Maydee; Daigi-Ann Thompson and Kaitlynd Brzostowicz in the roles of Vennie and Raisa, respectively; and PRT favorite June L. Saunders Duell as Lola. General admission is $25; $19.50 for seniors and students with I.D., and $15 for children ages four through 12. Group rates are available. Remember MOVE Bombing Haunts Philly 26 Years Later

There was a time when Osage Avenue was far more than a street in West Philadelphia. It represented a glaring example of how a group of radicals, an incompetent police force and a lack of communication between the two could leave a neighborhood in flames, with 11 people dead. Osage Avenue was home to MOVE, a group that preached antigovernment revolution and turned their house into an armed fortress with a wooden bunker perched on the roof. Police had been keeping an eye on the group, but when its members began using a bullhorn to yell profane anti-government rants at all times of the night the confrontation was set. What should have happened next was that police and other city officials would address MOVE with reasonable force. But on the morning of May 13, 1985, after police surrounded the MOVE home and exchanged gunfire with members inside, they decided to take a page from a popular song from the Gap Band and literally drop a bomb on the house. Not a tear gas weapon or a stun device. We’re talking about a real bomb. Lookinf back at the MOVE incident 26 years later, the blame should be squarely placed on the shoulders of Philadelphia police officials, who should have faced departmental and civil charges for misconduct. (It’s amazing how often police resorted to violence against black targets, especially in the fight against black militant groups in the 1960s. Do you think the Philadelphia police would have been so quick to drop a bomb in a white neighborhood?)

The police clearly turned a siege into a killing field. MURDER IN THE ALLEY With their house in flames, MOVE members repeatedly tried to exit but were met with police gunfire which killed some of the adults and children in the alley behind the house. One adult, Ramona Africa, and one child, Birdy Africa, escaped the fire and were taken into custody. Six adults and five children were killed including Rhonda Africa, Birdy’s mother.
Mayor Goode later claimed he had ordered that MOVE children be taken into custody in the few days before the assault whenever they were seen away from the house After many hours, 61 homes were destroyed. Today, more than a dozen homes are still boarded up -- even after more than $43 million was spent to revitalize the neighborhood. Shameful. Medical Examiner personnel made a deliberately late arrival on the scene, after a crane had scooped through the debris, obliterating the exact recovery positions. The bodies were then left unrefrigerated, and examination of blood specimens and lung tissue was delayed long enough to make test results inconclusive as to the cause of death. On the basis of the May 13th mishandling, the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office later had their certification revoked. A commission that investigated found that Goode and two other officials, police commissioner Gregore Sambor and fire commissioner William Richmond, had been “grossly negligent.” The deaths of the MOVE children “appeared to be unjustified homicide,” it said. Police had not taken them out of the house when they had the chance. They had used excessive force in firing 10,000 rounds of ammunition into the house. The plan to drop explosives was “reckless” and “unconscionable.” And they let the fire burn until it was too late to control. Sambor resigned six months later. Richmond retired in 1988. Goode apologized tearfully on TV and was re-elected in 1988. One of the two who escaped the fire, Ramona Africa, 49, spent seven years in prison for riot and conspiracy. Today, she earns her living speaking about MOVE and Mumia Abu-Jamal, a death-row inmate convicted in an unrelated 1981 killing of a police officer. “ I am angry, and bitter, and justifiably so,” she says. “Not a single official went to prison for murdering my family,” referring to the whole Africa clan. The bombing, she says, was “not bad judgment. That is murder.” In 1996, Eleven years after police dropped a bomb on the MOVE row house, starting a fire that killed 11 people and destroyed a Philadelphia neighborhood, a jury ordered the city and two former officials to pay $1.5 million to a survivor and relatives of two dead cult members. After nine days of deliberations, the jury found the city used excessive force and violated MOVE’s constitutional protection against unreasonable search and seizure.

Is the Buffalo Board of Education pulling a ‘Dr. Harris’ on Dr. James A. Williams? There have been unconfirmed reports that the Buffalo Board of Education, under the leadership of Board President, Ralph Hernandez, is poised to submit a Resolution of a ‘Vote of No Confidence’ against School Superintendent Dr. James A. Williams. If this is, in fact true, then Dr. Williams days are surely numbered LEG. BETTY here in Buffalo! GRANT For those who were watching the local TV news after last week’s (May 4th) Board of Education meeting, Carl Paladino ( local businessman, failed gubernatorial candidate and constant critic of Dr. Williams), bragged to the watching audience that, “He is on his way out of here and we have the votes to do it!” One does not have to be smarter than the average person to know that he was referring to Dr. James Williams. This community can recall a similar move against Dr. James Harris in 1998, when those who run Buffalo (and it never was and never will be the mayor) found a way to alienate Dr. Harris from his base supporters. That group drove

the continued expansion of absolute Executive power in the name of fighting this seemingly ongoing and neverending "war on terror." I worry about the further erosion of our constitutional rights. I wonder when our troops will ever be called home. I know all too well, that thousands of young American men and women soldiers will never have the opportunity to return home. And of course, I fear reprisal. But more than anything, I cannot seem to remove the optics of the giddy, gleeful throngs of Americans who took to the streets celebrating in the early morning hours. Forgive me, but I don't want to watch uncorked champagne spill onto hallowed ground where thousands were murdered in cold blood. And I don't want to see any ugly blood stained sheets as proof of death or justice. Nor do I want to think about bulletridden corpses being dumped into the sea. And it breaks my heart to witness young Americans cheer any death -- even the death of a horrible, evil, murderous person -- like it is some trite tailgate party on a college campus. Why are we not somber? Where is the deeper, more meaningful reflection? Haven't we learned any lessons in ten years? Paid any attention along the way? Gained any valuable wisdom? Are we really better off? Can it ever be a true victory when so many don't even seem to comprehend the magnitude of what has been lost along the way? Or even what the future might hold? Was it all worth it? As my phone rings and the media looks toward me to give them their trite, warm soundbite of closure and elation, I have to be honest, today is not a day of celebration for me. To Boycott or Not to boycott: Should Children go to School May 16 or Stay at Home?

Dr. Williams Calls on District Parents to Send Chidren to School on May 16

Saving Our Children, Saving Our Selves: the Vote to Boycott

Emphasizes Attendance is Necessary for Success

n Tuesday, May 3, approximately 700 people gathered in the auditorium of Performing Arts High School to hear from city council members, school board members, State Assembly reps, the NYS Board of Regents Chair, the Superintendent of schools, the Mayor, and representatives from the Governor’s office on the abysmal state of affairs in the city’s schools. With hope, you’ve been following the firestorm that’s brewing in the city - that’s caught the attention of local radio talk shows, ABC’s Good Morning America, and the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show. In fact, the entire nation is watching, as outcomes in Buffalo have the potential to set in motion a domino effect that could derail the system of public Sabirah education as it’s been structured for 150 years. If you haven’t, it’s absolutely critical that you give this Muhammad subject your attention, and then your passionate support. The Millions More Movement (MMM), the District Parent Coordinating Council (DPCC), The Black Chamber of Commerce, our church community, and many more organizations and concerned individuals have mounted the most serious challenge to substandard education for Black children since the BUILD organization’s efforts over 40 years ago. But therein lies the point: BUILD did this over 40 years ago. If we can get it this time, our own children won’t be fighting this same fight 40 years from now. This struggle for the minds and the futures of our own children personifies the meaning of the adage: “Those who forget history are condemned to repeat it.” On Tuesday, the public servants who are responsible for administering the schools finally found their way to the same place at the same time, because after 5 years of asking, we pulled the trigger that they understand. We let them know that we’re so enraged over the fact that 75% of Black and Latino boys never graduate from high school, year, after year, after year, that we will shut the damn thing down – until folks understand that they are servants, not overlords. Time out for begging for change from those who eat well from the way things are. Understand what this means. Because the teachers union doesn’t give a damn whether our children are in the classrooms or not, they maneuvered things so that funding is now tied to enrollment, not to classroom attendance, and somewhere along the line, truant officers were cut. No more keeping up with attendance to make sure the money keeps flowing. Now they just take enrollment at the beginning of the year, and again at mid year, secure their money, and go through the motions. What motions? A former teacher reported to us recently that when she was struggling to bring order to her unruly classroom, she was told by a senior colleague: “Well, you don’t have to teach them, just contain them.” We know what the motions are. What their maneuvering means, though, is that to stop the money, all we have to do is stop enrollment. Nothing moves without our children. –And it’s exactly what the teachers did to get the obscene amounts of money, benefits, and paid holidays that they have, all on the misery of our “contained” children. They waged a strike – until the Mayor and Governor collaborated and agreed to their terms. We have some great support for change out there among some of our elected officials, and in the community. CAO (Community Action Organization) Executive Director L. Nathan Hare and Councilman Michael Kerns have given a clarion call for a return to community schools, and for access to the buildings in the evening hours. Common Council Education Committee Chair Damon Smith has offered rock-solid support throughout. Mayor Byron Brown has been a frequent attendee at meetings, assuring parents of his support. Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes responded early to calls for support, and colleague Sam Hoyt is on board with legislation that will bring earthshaking change, like granting inner city residents the right to vote on school budget expenditures just like the suburbs do, and the ability to decide the type of reform in low performing schools. Peoples-Stokes is also anxious to work with parents to get Black and Latino men into the schools to teach, coach, mentor, and maintain a presence for our boys.

Buffalo Public Schools Superintendent Dr. James Williams has released the following statement regarding the District Parent Coordinating Council meeting and subsequent vote to boycott the city schools on May 16: “I reiterate my appreciation for the time, energy and diversity of talent that I saw on display May 3 at the District Parent Coordinating Council meeting. “There is a groundswell of passion for the Buffalo Public Schools to a level I haven’t experienced in the six years I’ve been here, and frankly, I welcome it. “All of us – the district, teachers, principals and parents – need to work together for the benefit of our children. Let’s not forget why we’re here.

O

DR. WILLIAMS

“The idea of a boycott on May 16 is a bad one. It is misguided. Our attendance is a problem to begin with and one of the key indicators as to why so many of our children re underachieving. Parents are powerful; and the best thing they can do is to send their children to school every day. “Keeping children out of school

is not a solution to anything, and I urge parents to ignore the call for a boycott. Taking a step backward is no way to go forward. Instead of putting energy into keeping our kids out of school, that energy should be directed to academics and achievement.”

May 16, D-Day: Why The School Boycott is Necessary... On May 16th, we the parents with children in the Buffalo Public School District will need to make a decision about our children’s future and their Education NOW. For years, we have been sending our children into a system that is not educating them. In Buffalo, we have a two tier education system. If your child is in City Honors, Da Vinci or, Hutch Tech they have a chance. The other high schools are virtual pipelines to prison. Don’t take my word, just do a little investigating or even ask the children about the schools Less than 30% of Black and Brown boys graduate high school in Buffalo New York. Nationally, it’s close to 50%. Although Buffalo has made some progress under Dr. Williams’ watch, it is still way below the acceptable standards to make a child collage or career ready, unless they go to one of the elite top Tier Schools. I sat in the DPCC (District Parent Coordinating Council) meeting last week. They had all the decision makers in education from the City, County and State. As predicted they all blamed each other. The Regents (State) blamed the District and the District blamed the State. Crystal People –Stokes and Sam Hoyt offered up some powerful legislation that will usher in the Parent Trigger Laws. Councilman Pridgen stated that the system is doing exactly what it is designed to do, and that is to under-educate our children, thus putting them on track for prison. After that, the DPCC voted to boycott (not send the kids to school) May 16. BRYON J. Fact: The district has NEVER EVER graduated over 50% of its students. Presently, only one MCINTYRE School Board member has children in the Public School System (I believe they go to the elitist Olmstead Schools, which are a part of the top tier grammar schools). Buffalo has about 36,000 students. About 90% are in poverty and receiving free lunch. Over 80% of the children are Black Brown or new to the country. Seventy percent of the children come from single parent (mother h head of household) homes. The teachers in our schools are over 70% White, 98% of which are women. At one point this winter, the City of Buffalo streets were clear, but because the Southtowns were not, our schools were closed ! With the Race to the Top, the Federal Government has given our district a choice of four models to convert PLA (Persistently Low Achieving) schools. Because of incompetence and Union contracts, the district just can’t make it happen or work. History: In 1947, the Buffalo Teachers Union was the First Public Sector Union to ever strike. It gave birth to strong unions as we now know. After three days, they had 100% cooperation from the members. On the 7th day, their demands were mysteriously accommodated. The Mayor and Governor said that they couldn’t get what they wanted. They went on strike and got what they wanted. Reality: The system has failed our children! Parents have not had any significant say in the education or polices that affect our children! The CHILDREN’S STRIKE/BOYCOTT will bring power to the Parents. The entire government will have to take notice of our refusal to participate in a system that all evidence is showing is failing our children. Just like the Teachers did. This half a day strike will send ripples through the country’s failing educational system. By the way, Buffalo Public Schools are scheduled to have three full days and two half off day this month alone. No district in the Continued Page 16 May 11, 2011

Dear Eve: I try to do everything to satisfy my wife. It doesn’t seem to work. For example, the first thing I do when I get paid is buy her a gift. Sometimes she takes it and lays it down without a word, not even thanks. Sometimes I just simply want to cook to please her. She doesn’t seem to be pleased with that. Sometimes we’ll go food shopping together and right in the store she fusses about that. There have been times when

MCINTYRE continued

State has days off like we do. If the children strike this ONE HALF DAY, and meet at City Hall for prayer at noon, it will begin to change history. Stay tuned for more information,on New York State Parent Trigger Laws and how we, the parents, can seize negotiating power for our children’s future and education NOW. we were watching TV together, she didn’t like what I wanted to watch, so I bought her a TV of her very own to watch. Now she says I don’t want to watch TV with her. What will it take to please her? We have been married five years. I love her very much. All I want to do is please her. Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated. My wife reads your column, as often as I do. -Please don’t mention my name

Dear “Don’t Mention”: You do admit that you love your wife dearly. That is a very good point well taken. Married people have tender moments. The next time you and your wife have a quiet tender moment, why not casually mention that you would like to hear “thank you” sometime? Do you and your wife go to church? If you don’t, why not start now? So many times, I have heard this quote: “The family that PRAYS together – STAYS together.” While praying together – you will find that prayer changes things. So be patient. Whenever you and your wife take a day off together – and when the TV is off –reach for your Bible. Allow your first readingto be Psalms 27 verse 14. “Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: Wait, I say on the Lord.”

SABIRAH MUHAMMAD continued The problem is that state and city offices have to work together to bring change, and that level of cooperation is not there. Robert Bennett, from the Board of Regents insists that the failure of the schools is a local problem that can’t be affected at the state level. The Superintendent, whose comments on structural inequality and inefficiency in the system are at the core of the debate decided on Tuesday to place the bulk of the blame on our unstable households – that send children to school unprepared to learn. The day after the meeting, his answer to the question: What are you doing today that’s different from yesterday in answer to the calls for reform was: “Nothing.” School Board President Ralph Hernandez declared that parents will not be permitted to “impose their will on the board.” Imagine the arrogance of an elected official whose job it is to do precisely the peoples’ will to tell us that he won’t, and we can’t make him! What a shameless mockery of fundamental democratic principles from a “servant” in a system of government “of the people, by the people, and for the people”. What “in-your-face” disrespect – and what a dare. Call their bluff, as they have ours, because we’re not bluffing. For every one of our children walking around carrying the stigma of being a high school drop out or labeled learning disabled, functionally illiterate or unable to compute, unemployed, unemployable, idle, incarcerated, or dead, for all of the lost hope and potential for generations, take the dare. Send your children to one of our churches on Monday, May 16th - to the institution that has been our rock, our stabilizer, our invitation to salvation. Many thanks to the Rev. Darius Pridgen of True Bethel Baptist Church who said it well: “If we can do Sunday school, we can do Monday school.” Rev. Pridgen, who is also a former school board member and a recently elected city council member has stepped to the fore with a “return to Montgomery” approach to the boycott. He summed up the question of structural deficiency in a matter of moments at the meeting, saying: “structure is set up to achieve something. Really, there isn’t a structural problem, because it’s achieving what it’s supposed to achieve - poverty, unemployment, jail, everything that some folks want it to achieve. … Now the only person in the urban community that’s getting rich is the undertaker, from burying our kids. So does it work? Hell yeah, it works.” Shut it down.
