BILLS UPDATE/George Radney
Reflections on Bills Impressive 41-7 Win over Kansas City Chiefs The Buffalo Bills registered a memorable beat down of the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. It was the first time in many years that the Bills were more physical and aggressive than their opponent. The Bills recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff, and never looked back after Ryan Fritzpatrick hit new tight end Scott Chandler at the goal line for a touchdown. Fritz went on to throw 4 TD's in the second worst home defeat in Kansas City Chief history. Fred Jackson ran for 112 yards on 20 carries as the offensive and defensive lines of the Bills dominated the line of scrimmage. The key is not to have any turnovers, and that's what led to the Bills overall success against the Chiefs. Fritz must continue to take what the defense is giving up and not turn the ball over GEORGE along with more Fred Jackson running the ball. The Bills should RADNEY go ahead and pay Fred Jackson his money, it’s no doubt he's a key player in the Bills future. Stevie Johnson with 4 receptions for 66 yards and 1 TD should also be next in line for a new contract. What are the Bills waiting for? Theypaid Chris Kelsay for some unknown reason, but are not taking care of the keyBlack players on the team. It's time Ralph Wilson bean counters step up to the plate and pay the brothers who are making things really happen like Fred Jackson and Stevie Johnson. The Bills defense is much improved, with rookie Marcell Dareus leading the way on a bigger and more physical unit. If Marcell continues to have a good season, than the Bills will be contenders instead of pretenders for a playoff position. Drayton Florence is playing quite well at cornerback postion along with rookie Aaron Williams (who played extended time due to Terrence McGee hanstring injury). Leotis McKelvin continues to have problems covering his man, once again he bit on a move and was beaten down the field for one KC's only big plays in the game. Coach Chan Gailey said,"We whipped them pretty good, and I'm most pleased with how aggressive we were throughout the game." Yes, so was I coach! Up next the Oakland Raiders in our home opener. My prediction is a 24-17 win over another improving team. Page 2

News Update
Group of Black Government Employees Calls for End to the Drug War A group representing black government employees, including a former DEA agent and member of the U.S. Marshals, has released a petition calling for an end to the drug war. Authored by Matthew F. Fogg, a retired DEA agent, the Blacks In Goverment (BIG) petition calls for a "Federal investigation for solutions to eliminate the pretense and continued arrest and incarceration of African-Americans at extraordinarily disparate rates for drug-related charges," as well as for Attorney General Eric Holder and President Barack Obama to immediately end "racial bias drug enforcement operations, provide retroactive reduction in sentences for victims and suggest alternatives to incarceration that may in part, include a model to regulate and control the distribution of some drugs." Fogg covered D.C. for the DEA during the late 80s and 90s. In a statement from Law Enforcement Again Prohibition, Fogg says, "I personally witnessed racially biased enforcement procedures when I ran a joint DEA task force... When I requested equal enforcement of upscale suburban areas, I met internal resistance." More from LEAP's statement: BIG and LEAP have noted that African Americans constitute 53.5 percent of all persons who entered prison because of a drug conviction despite the fact that blacks are no more likely than whites to use drugs. The BIG resolution calls for “a federal investigation for solutions to eliminate the pretense and continued arrest and incarceration of African Americans at extraordinarily disparate rates for drug related charges.” In passing the anti-drug-war resolution, BIG joins other African-American groups that have taken similar positions, such as the NAACP, the National Black Caucus of State Legislators and the National Black Police Association. “The war on drugs has put blacks behind bars for drug offenses at more than ten times the rate of whites, even though the evidence consistently shows that blacks are no more likely to use or sell currently illicit drugs than whites are,” Fogg added. “It is time to end this virtual race war.” BIG's petition comes hot on the heels of the NAACP's call for drug law reform.
STOP THE EXECUTION of TROY DAVIS!
On March 28, 2011, the US Supreme Court failed to take up the appeal of Troy Anthony Davis, the Savannah, Ga. man whose scheduled execution has been halted three times in the past because of the growing evidence and public belief in his innocence. AND NOW HIS EXECUTION HAS BEEN SET FOR WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21. Troy Davis is an African American on death row in Georgia. Davis was convicted in the 1989 killing of a police officer despite what Amnesty International calls "overwhelming doubts about his guilt." No physical forensic evidence was presented at Davis' trial, and 7 of the 9 non-police witnesses have recanted their testimony, with at least two saying they were pressured by police to finger Davis as the killer. Miss Universe 2011
Leila Lopes of Angola is crowned Miss Universe SAO PAULO — Newly crowned Miss verse Leila Lopes wants to help her native Angola further escape a history of war and impoverishment and said she plans to focus on combating HIV around the globe. Speaking in a timid voice early Tuesday shortly after taking the crown in South America's largest city, the 25-year-old Lopes said that "as Miss Angola I've already done a lot to help my people." "I've worked with various social causes. I work with poor kids, I work in the fight against HIV. I work to protect the elderly and I have to do everything that my country needs," she said. "I think now as Miss Universe I will be able to do much more." Responding to questions, Lopes said that she has never had cosmetic surgery of any kind and that her three tips for beauty were to get a lot of sleep, use sunblock even when it's not sunny and to drink lots of water. She said her smile was her best weapon in the competition. Asked about racism in light of the fact that she's one of the few blacks ever crowned Miss Universe, Lopes said that "any racist needs to seek help." "It's not normal in the 21st century to think in that way." Lopes is Angola's first winner. She beat out 88 other competitors to win the title during the 60th anniversary of the world's biggest beauty pageant. She replaces last year's winner, Ximena Navarrete of Mexico. She deftly handled the interview question that is asked of the remaining top five contestants. She was questioned about what physical trait she would change if she could. "Thank God I'm very satisfied with the way God created me and I wouldn't change a thing," Lopes said. "I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family and I intend to follow these for the rest of my life." The first runner-up was 23-year-old Olesia Stefanko of Ukraine and the second runner-up was Priscila Machado of Brazil. The third was Miss Philippines and the fourth Miss China.
Kenya petrol fire kills 'more than 100'
More than 100 people have died after a petrol pipeline explosion and fire in Kenya's capital, Nairobi, police say. The blast took place in the city's Lunga industrial area, and police and troops cordoned off the area as firefighters battled fierce flames in the surrounding shanty town. The pipeline runs through the densely populated Sinai slum area between Nairobi's city centre and the airport. More than 80 casualties have been taken to hospitals, officials said. Reports suggest Monday's blast may have been sparked by sparks from burning garbage. The fuel had leaked from a tank in a depot belonging to the Kenya Pipeline Company, police spokesman Charles Owino told Reuters news agency. Residents said the spill prompted many people to rush and collect leaking fuel. “Then there was a loud bang, a big explosion, and smoke and fire burst up high," resident Joseph Mwego told Agence France-Presse. Parts of bodies littered the remains of burning shacks for some 1,000 feet around the site of the blast, locals said.Bodies were also seen floating in a nearby river, into which burn victims had reportedly leapt after catching fire. Tin-roofed huts were built directly adjacent to the pipeline in the area, residents say. While the burning garbage may have lighted the fire, poverty seemed to be the real fuse.

HEALTH MATTERS
Salmonella Leads to Second Ground Turkey Recall CHICAGO — Cargill Inc. announced a second recall of ground turkey products Sunday after a test showed salmonella in a sample from the same Arkansas plant tied to a recall issued last month. The second recall covers about 185,000 pounds of ground turkey products, including trays of ground meat, patties and chubs, the USDA said. The products were distributed nationwide under the Kroger, Fresh HEB and Cargill's Honeysuckle White brands. All ground turkey made at the Springdale plant has "P-963" or "963" on the package, in a USDA seal or perhaps on the cellophane. Consumers who bought products bearing that identification number can call 1-888-812-1646 for instructions on what to do. The recall covers products made Aug. 23 and 24. Cargill also is recalling ground turkey made on Aug. 30 and 31 pending a positive match with a sample, the USDA said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 50 million Americans get sick each year from food poisoning, including about 3,000 who die. Salmonella causes most of these illnesses. The most common symptoms of salmonella are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within eight hours to 72 hours of eating a contaminated product. It can be life-threatening to some with weakened immune systems.

The Benefits of Celery Juice
High blood pressure is often the root cause of stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure. A time-tested Chinese remedy for this condition is fresh celery juice, which can be made with a blender or a juicer. Drinking one to two large glasses a day can help prevent high blood pressure or restore it to normal in those who already have high blood pressure. Studies have found that celery stalks are packed with more than a dozen anti-inflammatory agents, including apigenin, a cox2inhibiting compound similar to some anti-inflammatory drugs.

GENERATIONS Big Brothers Big Sisters: Saving the Children, The One Volunteer at a Time
Hollywood actress, Anjunae Ellis, a Class Act
80% of the children Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erie County provides services to identify as African American, Latino or an ethnicity other than Caucasian.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is the largest provider of one-to-one youth mentoring services in the United States. In Erie County, the organization has been matching caring adults with local children for more than 35 years and have touched the lives of over 6,000 youth. These quality relationships are built on friendship and trust, and are proven to be a significant positive influence in the life of the child, and the volunteer. Studies show that children matched with "Bigs" when compared to other youth are: *46% are less likely to start using drugs *27% are less likely to start drinking *52% are less likely to skip a day
of school *37% are less likely to skip a class *33% are less likely to hit someone and are more trusting of their parents or guardians The time spent between Big and Little, riding bikes, playing board games or just hanging out, is magical. Help make the magic happen by volunteering today. The committee of Big Brothers and Big Sisters, "Big" alumni and community members are dedicated to increasing the ethnic diversity of volunteer Big Brothers and Big Sisters so that all of the children the organization provides services to, if they wish, can consistently interact with men and women who "look like them". Currently, 80% of the children Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erie County provides services to identify as African American, Latino or an ethnicity other than Caucasian. Yet, only 13% of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters in the agency identify with one of the ethnicities. We celebrate the reality that individuals of other ethnicities
Help! Just What the Upward Bound Program Needed! By Zaid Bilal
Many high school students returning to school this week will need to recharge their batteries for learning. But for upwards of 78 high school students from Buffalo State’s Upward Bound Program, their batteries should be charged up and ready to go. Different from others high school students, Upward Bound cohorts, spent the larger part of their 2011 summer vacation residing on the campus of Buffalo State. But rather than a leisurely recreational experiEdward “EJ” Jackson has been a Big ence, these students labored in Brother for two years and says it is the the midst of sweltering heat, as thing he enjoys most. The greater reward Continued Page 7 for these students culminated in the program’s grand finale: an awards banquet, which was Aunjanue Ellis. Additional photos page 20. hosted on August 11, 2011 at the Buffalo Hyatt Regency Hotel. Although this year was no ordinary time for TRIO programs like Upward Bound. The banquet was hosted amidst uncertainty over the federal budget malaise, brought on by the debt ceiling crisis. Throughout America there are as many as 2,800 TRIO programs, like Upward Bound that depend on federal funding to serve upwards of 850,000 low-income families in this country. Realizing the changing climate of Washington, D.C. and the looming prospect of budget cuts, Don Patterson, director of Buffalo State’s Upward Bound Program, sought the help, of budding Hollywood superstar actress, Aunjanue Ellis, of the new hit movie, The Help! Ellis who also starred in movies such as, Ray, Men of Honor, and The Mentalist, was the banquet’s keynote speaker. She arrived in town, just one day prior to attending the premier showing of her new movie, and was perfect for the occasion. But rather than stand before the standing room only crowd extolling her Hollywood star power, Ellis moved the crowd with her stirring accounts of having been reared in abject poverty. She recalled how socially embarrassing it was to go shopping at the market with her grandmother who raised her, and would purchase groceries with government issued food stamps. Ellis indicated that the key to a better future for her meant going to college to pursue her dreams of becoming a Hollywood actress, which she achieved. Yet, her message was very meaningful in light of these uncertain times for students and families and the alarming prospect of programs like Upward Bound being eliminated. Buffalo State’s Upward Bound provides year-round services, including: career counseling, college planning, SAT prep, cultural enrichment, tutoring, mentoring, etc., which has allowed it to place 90 percent of their students in colleges throughout the state and the country. Yet, their 2012 funding is in doubt. It is socially embarrassing that a nation like ours, which is the wealthiest in the world, would seek to reduce spending on the backs of the most vulnerable and underserved low-income families in our country. Worst even, in reducing funding or eliminating such pre-collegiate programs, our nation is cutting off its nose, to spite its face. This of course is a cause for concern, given that the face of the nation is due to become more black and brown in the next 25-30 years. Of more immediate concern, the United States is ranked 16th among 27 nations in college degrees conferred. While Congress debates the costs of funding such programs, the costs of not funding them will be even greater. According to New York State’s Say Yes! To Higher Education, children reared Continued Page14

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erie County provides services to youth between the ages of 6-16 through five key programs: • Community-Based Mentoring: For as little as a few hours a month, Bigs and Littles meet in their community to share fun • Site-Based Mentoring: Bigs and Littles meet once a week in schools, and community centers, to talk and have fun. It’s not about being a tutor … it’s about being a friend. • The Mentor/Advocate Program, provides mentoring and advocacy for the agency's most "at-risk" clients. • Mentoring Children of Prisoners Program: Across the United States, an estimated two million children, ages 5 to 18, have a parent who is incarcerated in a federal, state or local prison. Mother Holt: Mrs. Velma Holt is surrounded by family, friends and loved ones during a recent celebration on her 94th birthday!
Velma Holt Celebrates 94 Wonderful Years of Living!
F
amily and friends gathered at the lovely home of Mrs. Velma Holt recently to celebrate her 94th birthday . Surrounded by love and adoration, she sat in her East buffalo yard and reflected briefly on her life. A perennial beauty, her skin is clear and her mind is sharp. She was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma (she is of part Cherokee Indian and French linage) and came to Buffalo in 1939. It was here that she met and married her husband, George Holt. They raised 7 children and enjoyed nearly 50 years of marriage before he passed in 1989. When asked about her secret to longevity, she pointed to a diary she keeps daily. Written in perfect penmanship, she shared a few pages of her writings. “The spirit provides me with all I need, “ she entered on one page. “I still my busy mind and breath deeply and fully...I let go, let God and trust...Letting go is a demonstration of my faith,,” she entered on yet another. Mrs. Holt said she reads her Bible regularly and gives thanks for every
day. And she smiles a lot. “I don’t even take an aspirin,” she said in reference to her good health. “I go to the doctor once a year after my birthday. I keep my weight down and try to never eat after 6 p.m..” Her day starts with a breakfast of cereal, a cup of coffee with shot of brandy and a clove of fresh garlic. She eats well, thanks to her son Dale, who, like herself, is a gourmet cook. Her love of life is evident in her strong, unwavering faith. “I live one day at a time,” she said. She pointed out that she never goes to bed carrying any of the day’s issues...”I blow this mess away. and when I wake up I give my day to God and say (prayfully) that there’s nothing You (God) and I can’t do.” Mrs. Holt worked for 60 years for the Catholic Diocese. “I never made thousands and thousand of dollars, but I was a millionaire,” she said. Never motivated by money, she said all her accomplishments were to show what a Black woman was capable of doing. Her journey has definitely left its mark. In 1989 Mrs. Holt received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in recognition of her work from Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora. It was significant in that it was the first time the Seminary had given such a degree to a woman, a non-cleric and to an individual without college training. In the Spring of that same year, Mrs. Holt received the St. Joseph’s Lay Award from the Buffalo Catholic Diocese. And the next year she was honored by St. Philips Episcopal Church for giving decades of service to others. She continues to be an active member St. Columba-Brigid Roman Catholic Church. In addition to her son Dale, she is the mother to Marlon Holt, former Erie County Legislator George Holt, Sonny Stanford, Arthur Holt , Lynn Holt, Connie Holt and a host of extended family/ sons and daughters. Happy birthday to an amazing community treasure!

entertaiment LEGENDZ PROFILE:
ISLEY BROTHERS
(The Legendz Tour will take place in Rochester’s Frontier Field on Saturday, October 1st featuring the Isley Brothers, Frankie Beverly and Bobby Womack. Tickets available at Doris Records in Buffalo and the Frontier Field Box Office in Rochester.) Brothers O'Kelly "Kelly" Isley, Rudolph "Rudy" Isley, Ronald "Ronnie" Isley and Vernon Isley grew up in the predominantly Black section of Lincoln Heights, Cincinnati, Ohio and were raised by Christianreared parents O'Kelly Isley, Sr. and Sallye Bernice Bell. Sallye would later tell interviews how her husband, a gospel singer, wanted to have sons to become "the next Mills Brothers". As soon as all four boys were able to walk and talk, they were immediately trained by their parents to sing songs together as a group. From the begin-
ning, Ronald Isley, considered to have the best voice, was positioned as the group's lead singer and front man. As a child he entered talent contests winning most of them and even opened for several musicians including Mahalia Jackson and Dinah Washington. In 1954, the Isley Brothers were officially formed and the quartet toured
the gospel circuit. Their success was short-lived, however, when in 1955, 13-year-old Vernon Isley was suddenly struck by a car while riding on his bicycle and was killed instantly. Devastated, the boys withdrew from singing. Eventually encouraged by their parents, the three eldest Isleys returned to music but were now being buoyed by the potential secular market of doo-wop. With their parents' blessings, in 1956, the brothers left for New York where they auditioned for, and eventually, landed their first recording deal. In 1957, the group released their first single, "The Cow Jumped Over the Moon", which had a strong sound similar to that of The Teenagers. The record flopped. Two years later, the group faced tragedy again when their father died after a struggle with cancer. Moving on, the group built a local fan base due to their energetic live performances. James Brown once described the Isleys entering the stage flying through ramps "like Tarzan" and this was before they began performing. While opening for Jackie Wilson, the group did a cover of Wilson's "Lonely Teardrops", which got a notice from a scout who was working for RCA Records. He brought the group to RCA's main headquarters and the group was immediately offered a contract. While their first single with the label failed to make an impact, their second single, "Shout", a song the three brothers had composed almost spontaneously, found chart traction eventually peaking just above the top fifty on the Billboard Hot 100. Top 5 Ways Obama’s Jobs Bill Will Positively Affect African Americans
Last week, President Obama gave his long awaited speech on the $450 billion jobs bill that he is looking to pass through Congress. The reception to his speech was positive from both Democratic and Republican commentators. On Monday he sent the $447 billion jobs bill to ocongress and urged a swift passage. Now all the president has to worry about is whether Republicans will help him out on this bill, or simply blockade him as they’ve done on various other bills throughout his presidency. Below, we have a Top 5 list of how Obama’s jobs bill will positively affect African Americans. 1. The extension of unemployment insurance will benefit 1.4 million African- Americans and their families. At
the same time, the President is proposing bipartisan reforms that will enable that – as these families continue to receive UI benefits – the program is better tailored to support reemployment for the long-term unemployed. 2. Targeted support for the long-term unemployed could help the 1.4 million African- Americans who have been looking for work for more than six months: To help them in their search for work, the President is calling for a new tax credit for hiring the long- term unemployed. 3. A commitment to rebuilding and revitalizing communities across the country will target investments to the communities hardest-hit by the recession. The President’s investments in infrastructure include a school construction initiative with a significant commitment
to the largest urban school districts, an investment in revitalizing communities that have been devastated by foreclosures, and a new initiative to expand infrastructure employment opportunities for minorities, women, and socially and economically disadvantaged individuals. 4. Support for subsidized jobs and summer/year-round jobs for AfricanAmerican youth – for whom unemployment is above 30%. In an environment with an unemployment rate of 32.4% for African-American youths, the President is proposing to build on successful programs like the TANF Emergency Contingency Fund to create jobs and provide training for those hardest-hit by the recession. 5. An extension and expansion of the payroll tax cut for nearly 20 million African- American workers. By extending the payroll tax cut for employees next year and expanding it to cut payroll taxes in half, the President’s plan will help increase the paychecks of nearly 20 million African-American workers – providing them with more money to spend in their communities.
Henri L. Muhammad
Henri Plays The Strad!
On a recent visit to Chicago, Henri L. Muhammad and the students of Muhammad School of Music (Buffalo, New York) were treated with a special visit to famed violin dealer Bein and Fushi. Violin curator and Bein and Fushi founder, Geoffrey Fushi enlightened the students with a detailed history of such noted violin makers as Stradivarius and Guarnerius, as well as, several of their priceless instruments. Some instruments dated back as far as the 1600’s and are regarded as the greatest stringed instruments ever made. The most expensive musical instrument in the world currently is the “Henri Vieuxtemps” Guarneri del Gesu of 1741, on sale through Bein and Fushi for a mere $18 Million dollars. Following Mr. Fushi’s presentation Henri L. Muhammad, professional violinist and founder of Muhammad School of Music (MSOM), had the unique and rare opportunity to play several instruments from their collection, including both a 1721 Stradivarius MSOM students with Mr. Fushi and 1725 Guarnerius Violin. “The experience was phenomenal!” commented Henri. “From the moment I played the first note I could feel the personality, prowess, and power each instrument possessed. It was as much a spiritual experience as it was musical.” He went on to say, “To hold such history is remarkable. These are violins made by the greatest violin makers of the 18th century, and 300 years later their sound and playability remains exceptional!” Henri L. Muhammad and the students of MSOM send their heartfelt thanks to Bein and Fushi for a musical experience of a violinists’ lifetime.

Obama Will Triumph -- So Will America
B
By Frank Schaeffer
efore he'd served even one year President Obama lost the support of the easily distracted left and engendered the white hot rage of the hate-filled right. But some of us, from all walks of life and ideological backgrounds -- including this white, straight, 57-year- old, former religious right wing agitator, now progressive writer and (given my background as the son of a famous evangelical leader) this unlikely Obama supporter -- are sticking with our President. Why?-- because he is succeeding. We faithful Obama supporters still trust our initial impression of him as a great, good and uniquely qualified man to lead us. Obama's steady supporters will be proved right. Obama's critics will be remembered as easily panicked and prematurely discouraged at best and shriveled hate mongers at worst. The Context of the Obama Presidency Not since the days of the rise of fascism in Europe , the Second World War and the Depression has any president faced more adversity. Not since the Civil War has any president led a more bitterly divided country. Not since the introduction of racial integration has any president faced a more consistently short-sighted and willfully ignorant opposition - from both the right and left. As the President's poll numbers have fallen so has his support from some on the left that were hailing him as a Messiah not long ago; all those lefty website's and commentators that were falling all over themselves on behalf of our first black president during the 2008 election. The left's lack of faith has become a self-fulfilling "prophecy"-- snipe at the President and then watch the poll numbers fall and then pretend you didn't have anything to do with it! Here is what Obama faced when he took office-- # An ideologically divided country to the point that America was really two countries # Two wars; one that was mishandled from the start, the other that was unnecessary and immoral # The worst economic crisis since the depression # America 's standing in the world at the lowest point in history # A country that had been misled into accepting the use of torture of prisoners of war Page 14
# A health care system in free fall # An educational system in free fall # A global environmental crisis of history-altering proportions (about which the Bush administration and the Republicans has done nothing) # An impasse between culture warriors from the right and left # A huge financial deficit inherited from the terminally irresponsible Bush administration. And those were only some of the problems sitting on the President's desk! Help" from the Right? What did the Republicans and the religious right, libertarians and halfbaked conspiracy theorists -- that is what the Republicans were reduced to by the time Obama took office -- do to "help" our new president (and our country) succeed? They claimed that he wasn't a real American, didn't have an American birth certificate, wasn't born here, was secretly a Muslim, was white-hating "racist", was secretly a communist, was actually the Anti-Christ, (!) and was a reincarnation of Hitler and wanted "death panels" to kill the elderly! They not-so-subtly called for his assassination through the not-so-subtle use of vile signs held at their rallies and even a bumper sticker quoting Psalm 109:8. They organized "tea parties" to sound off against imagined insults and all government in general and gathered to howl at the moon. They were led by insurance industry lobbyists and deranged (but well financed) "commentators" from Glenn Beck to Rush Limbaugh. The utterly discredited Roman Catholic bishops teamed up with the utterly discredited evangelical leaders to denounce a president who was trying to actually do something about the poor, the environment, to diminish the number of abortions through compassionate programs to help women and to care for the sick! And in Congress the Republican leadership only knew one word: "No!" In other words the reactionary White, rube, uneducated, crazy American far right, combined with the educated but obtuse neoconservative war mongers, religious right shills for big business, libertarian Fed Reserve-hating gold bug, gun-loving crazies, child-molesting acquiescent "bishops", frontier loons and evangelical gay-hating flakes found one thing to briefly unite them: their desire to stop an uppity Black
man from succeeding at all costs! "Help" from the Left? What did the left do to help their newly elected president? Some of them excoriated the President because they disagreed with the bad choices he was being forced to make regarding a war in Afghanistan that he'd inherited from the worst president in modern history! Others stood up and bravely proclaimed that the President's economic policies had "failed" before the President even instituted them! Others said that since all gay rights battles had not been fully won within virtually minutes of the President taking office, they'd been "betrayed"! (Never mind that Obama's vocal support to the gay community is stronger than any other president's has been. Never mind that he signed a new hate crimes law!) Those that had stood in transfixed legions weeping with beatific emotion on election night turned into an angry mob saying how "disappointed" they were that they'd not all immediately been translated to heaven the moment Obama stepped into the White House! Where was the "change"? Contrary to their expectations they were still mere mortals! And the legion of young new supporters was too busy texting to pay attention for longer than a nanosecond. "Governing"?! What the hell does that word, uh, like mean?" The President's critics left and right all had one thing in common: impatience laced with little-to-no sense of history (let alone reality) thrown in for good measure. Then of course there were the white, snide know-itall commentators/talking heads who just couldn't imagine that maybe, just maybe they weren't as smart as they thought they were and certainly not as smart as their president. He hadn't consulted them, had he? So he must be wrong! The Obama critics' ideological ideas defined their idea of reality rather than reality defining their ideassay, about what is possible in one year in office after the hand that the President had been dealt by fate, or to be exact by the American idiot nation that voted Bush into office. Twice! Meanwhile back in the realitybased community - in just 12 short months -- President Obama: #Continued to draw down the misbegotten war in Iraq (But that wasn't good enough for his critics) #Thoughtfully and decisively picked the best of several bad choices regarding the war in Afghanistan (But that wasn't good enough for his critics) #Gave a major precedent-setting speech supporting gay rights (But that wasn't good enough for his critics) Continued Page 16
UPWARD BOUND continued in low-income households are 6 times more likely to drop-out of high school. That is why college access programs like Upward Bound are so important. Studies show that such programming that targets low-income students from urban settings, no later than ninth grade, have a better chance of graduating them, and later enrolling them in college. Upward Bound enrolls students in ninth grade, which is a pivotal time for students, in determining whether they will sink or swim in high school. A USA Today report on education found that in 50 of the nation’s largest cities, only 50 percent of their high school students will graduate. It is more alarming to note, that these 50 largest cities account for half the nation’s population. Such negative outcomes of high school students failing to graduate nationwide, does not bode well for the future of these affected students or our nation. Such students, who do not attain a high school diploma, face the long-term prospects of being relegated to permanent underclass status, which leads to other social maladies; including the erosion of neighborhoods, lack of job growth and imprisonment. Not surprisingly, high school students from communities with low socioeconomic backgrounds remain woefully underrepresented at colleges and universities throughout the state and the country. All of which increases the need for immediate action, given data projections that show, in the next decade a substantial number of college applicants will emanate from low and middle-income families . Other data provided by the Council for Opportunity in Education show the following: • Low-income students are being left behind. Only 38% of low-income high school seniors go straight to college as compared to 81% of their peers in the highest income quartile. Once enrolled in college, low-income students earn bachelor's degrees at a rate that is less than half of that of their high-income peers — 21% as compared with 45%. • The growing achievement gap in our country is detrimental to our success as a nation. While nearly 67% of high-income, highly-qualified students enroll in four-year colleges, only 47% of low-income, highly-qualified students enroll. Even more startling, 77% of the least-qualified, high-income students go on to college, while roughly the same proportion of the most-qualified low-income students, go to college. (ACSFA 2005). Concerned community residents in Buffalo, Western New York, throughout the state, and across the country, your advocacy is needed. The most major human rights violations are taking place in the current new theater of war in Libya, raging since March and uninterrupted until now, and yet Amnesty International’s “Human Rights Defender” magazine does not even MENTION Libya even a single word in the entire publication covering the months June, July and August where massacres and horrific torture and abuses have taken place as witnessed across the Internet and by news networks, yet Amnesty International chooses to ignore all this. Amnesty International is clearly a demonic “gate-keeper” organization
designed to attract White liberals with a conscience and take their money while doing nothing to help Black people, whereas the one society on earth, the Libyan Jamahiriya, where Black people had full rights, is being destroyed in front of our eyes, Amnesty International looks the other way. Other than that he didn't "live up to expectations"! Who actually has failed... ...are the Americans that can't see the beginning of a miracle of national rebirth right under their jaded noses. Who failed are the smart ass ideologues of the left and right who began rooting for this President to fail so that they could be proved right in their dire and morbid predictions. SEPTEMBER 14, 2011
OBAMA continued cycles that have turned "news" into just more stupid entertainment for an entertainment-besotted infantile country. Here's the good news: President Obama is succeeding without the help of his lefty "supporters" or hate-filled Republican detractors! The Future Looks Good! After Obama has served two full terms, (and he will), after his wisdom in moving deliberately and cautiously with great subtlety on all fronts -- with a canny and calculating eye to the possible succeeds, (it will), after the economy is booming and new indus-
tries are burgeoning, (they will be), after the doomsayers are all proved not just wrong but silly: let the record show that not all Americans were panicked into thinking the sky was/is falling!!!!! Just because we didn't get everything we wanted in the first short and fraught year Obama was in office not all of us gave up. Some of us stayed the course. And we will be proved right. PS. If you agree that Obama is shaping up to be a great President, please pass this on and hang in there! Pass it on anyway to ensure that his "report card" gets the attention it deserves.
